Record-Breaking Snowfall Buries Binghamton, New York, And Here’s What People Woke Up To (30 Pics)
The world seems perfect at least for a moment when you sit by the fireplace, listening to Frank Sinatra’s “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” totally in for the Christmas spirit that brings you back to your childhood memories. But as they say, be careful what you wish for, ‘cause you can indeed get a (tiny bit) too much snowy goodness.
Just like it happened in Binghamton, New York, where a staggering 20.5 inches of snow fell in just six hours, burying the city under 41 inches of snow. So on Thursday morning, at around 6:40 am, the residents woke up to realize they would have to dig themselves out by snowblower, snowplow, or shovel.
The snowstorm is said to be a record-breaker, with the second biggest of 35.3 inches documented three years ago, in March 2017. New York City was also hit by heavy snowfall overnight, with 10 inches falling in Central Park by 8 am, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile, other states like Vermont and Pennsylvania have logged more than 40 inches, with the very northern part of the state reaching 43 inches. So yep, it seems like you can get too much of a good thing, I mean, snow.

To find out more about the record-breaking snowfall in Binghamton, Bored Panda reached out to one of its residents, Zach, who goes by the Twitter handle @zcoonick6. Zach shared a photo of the street in snow-buried Binghamton with the caption “Waking up to 40” of snow this morning.”
Zach told us that he woke up at 3:30 am last night, checked outside, and was completely surprised. “I was expecting to see my cars in the driveway but instead it was just massive piles of snow. It’s not something you expect to wake up to.”
“As of this morning, they have plowed our roads just once to make them passable. Pretty much all of yesterday, the roads weren’t touched so travel was impossible.”
When asked how the residents were prepared for so much snow, Zach explained that living where he lives in New York, anytime there is a snowstorm on the way, “you are prepared to a certain extent.”
“For this one, most of the weather stations were talking about 9-16 inches, maybe 20 in some spots, but nothing like we ended up getting. (Officially 42”). So we were a little caught off guard, but it is par for the course in the Northeast.”
Fortunately, Zach assured us that everyone is doing well right now. “The state of emergency was lifted today and I think by the end of today, everyone will be dug out.”
“I know that my family and I are happy that we will be getting a white Christmas this year,” Zach said and added: “unless 2020 strikes for the final time and melts all that snow in a week!”
The first pic is usually the max amount that we get in WA, VERY occasionally it gets to a couple inches more than that though.
It snowed a bit at my moms house last night (Endicott)
Clean the roof of your car! If you stop at a traffic light the snow could hit anything and anyone in front of you.
Modern art. White - black, light - shadow, hard - soft, permanent - transient, straight lines - soft and rounded shapes. I could see this phot on my wall.
All I can say is, thank God that storm went southeast of the Great Lakes and totally missed southern Ontario!

Wow if my malamute could use the internet he'd be so jealous of that place right now!
We got about a 1/3 of that in CT. It was hard to tell because of crazy wind gusts but i got about 10-12in at my house. Nothing compared to 30+ but its like a curse here in the NE. We'll get a big and/or decent size one, then we'll get a bunch of smaller ones (like 4in here, 8in there types), then we'll get another big one or something & you run out of places to put the snow by like storm 3! Everyone & everything has 6ft tall snow piles eating up their grass space & its such a PITA to clear it!! Cant wait to move somewhere where snow is just a memory! Lol!
I'm only about 50 miles south of Binghamton below Scranton. We got it good but you guys got hammered! I have some 24" snow drifts and an average of 13 but 3 1/2+ feet?? WOW!
how many americans are still in "global warming is non-existent" mood?
we get an inch of slush here in the netherlands. and all the public transport stops with the first snowflake haha
When I lived in Chicago I did not dig out my car. Took the bus. Move your car and someone else WILL park in the space. Just saying . . .
I’m from Texas, so no idea what snow storms are like, but they sure do seem interesting..............
My city usually gets up to 20ish cm in snow these past years, rarely it gets over that (it did 20-30yrs ago). But in Feb 2012, it snowed so much that in the city it was over 1m if I remember correctly, and in the suburbs up to 2m, which was awesome, hillarious and terrifying all at the same time.
I love snow... all I ask for is 5 inches to sled on instead I get a useless dusting, and New England gets THIS?
We got something like this (not quite as much) in early November. P1020615-5...abb759.jpg

I'm in the Sacramento, California area and a few years ago we got a sprinkling of snow that stayed on the ground for less than an hour and they talked about it on the news for 2 days! LOL! People here can't even drive in the rain, not sure how anyone would handle snow like that! We'd probably curl up in a ball, cry, complain about our freedoms are being infringed upon because we can't drive in the snow, etc. Or some people would call it all a 'hoax' and insist it'"s only 1/4" and not really the 40" the rest of us see. LOL!
OK, so you dig out your car. So what? You can't actually, you know, drive anywhere, can you?
The last time we had SOME centimeters of snow for more than just one day or night, must have been ten years ago, give or take. (western Europe). Go climate change...
And this is why doors open inward on houses. If the children there are going to school online does that mean no snow day?
What a news... oh, wait, not. In Austria and in Switzerland goes too ca. 2-2,5 weeks ago. ;) Ok, I know, these are "just"in Europa, not the biiiig USA :D
Can you send it over the Atlantic please to Yorkshire. West Yorkshire to be precise.
So a typical overnight snow in the inter-mountain west. All depends on what you’re used to I guess.
My parents live in that area and it took them 4 hours to dig out to the road. And the thing I get the most amusement from is they told me the streets were clear by the afternoon - black top was glistening wet. I live in Denver now, a place many assume must handle snow removal well. A lesser amount fell November 2019 and the streets remained snow packed for weeks because the local government 's plan is to let the sun melt the side streets and some of the main streets.
The place in Canada where i live doesn't even get that much snow lol
But...but....What about global warming? Ms. Thunberg in Sweden is going to be sooooooo disappointed! I can almost hear her shouting "how dare you?!!!!" at all that deep snow!...
Never liked snow as a child or as an adult. Nothing good ever came out of it; at least not for me.
