Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva

Mummified human skeleton with decayed skin, showcasing one of the scariest and unsettling Wikipedia articles moments.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, also called Münchmeyer disease, was first discovered in 1692. It’s a condition characterized by connective tissue turning into bone over time, severely restricting movement and bodily function. Caused by a mutation of the gene ACVR1, it’s reportedly the only medical condition where tissue changes into another, and unfortunately, it has no cure.

There comes a time when the patient has to make a decision whether he wants to spend the rest of his life either sitting or lying down -as changing that will not be possible from a point.

Someone I went to high school with has this. It’s a bit of a misconception that people choose their position. She’s in a semi-reclined position, but that’s also because different joints locked up at different points in her life, so her position isn’t so much choice as the form her body took.

I wonder if it would be possible to do this in controlled environment. Use this mutation to create bones from other tissues in lab (or even in patient, idk using shots with mutated cells or something). I imagine it would be useful for i.e. reconstructing or replacing shattered bones or maybe curing patients with too brittle skeletons

    Locked-In Syndrome

Close-up of a human eye with detailed iris patterns, evoking the unsettling feeling from scary Wikipedia articles.

Locked-in syndrome is a condition where every part of the body except the eyes is paralyzed. People affected by the condition are forced to communicate through blinking or moving their eyes. Despite not being able to move, their brain function isn’t affected, so they are conscious and fully aware of their surroundings all the time.

This is terrifying to me. The article doesn’t mention that someone needs to see you using your eyes to respond to stimuli and a number of these patients aren’t diagnosed and instead treated like they’re in a coma and are not hearing and understanding what is going on around them. That’s a horrible fate. To me this is what they’re talking about when they say a fate worse than death.

I think he was paralysed after suffering a stroke, which is terrible, but it's even worse when there's no known reason, I can't explain why, but I feel it's even more terrifying. There a book called "The ghost boy" written by a person who spent more than ten years locked in. He was a young boy when he suddenly started losing the ability to move, and neither his parents nor his doctors imagined his mind was awake, and he could see and hear what was going on around him.

    Joyce Vincent

Newspaper clipping with a highlighted notice of a missing person named Joyce Vincent, unsettling Wikipedia article topic.

Joyce Vincent was a 38-year-old British woman who was found deceased in her apartment in January 2006. Her body was discovered, “mostly skeletal,” almost three years after she passed away in 2003. Shockingly, her TV remained on all that time, and most of her bills were automatically paid, so nobody noticed she was no longer alive—until bailiffs forced entry into her apartment due to unpaid rent.

The next door neighbour complained twice because the balcony door was banging because it was open for over a month. Police went round and knocked but didn't force entry! This was the year before she was found slumped dead on the sofa Infront of the TV. The water had been cut off 2 years before they found her! No one reported any bad smell as such and they are putting it down to the balcony door being open. They should have really found her after the water was cut off.

Thing with the smell is - it doesn't carry as strongly and as far away as people assume. Some years ago dr Bill Bass conducted studies to find how far from the decomposing, unburied body you have to be to smell it. In open space it was 10-20 yards (9-18 meters). In closed space, with closed windows and doors, maybe with ventilation - it's probably even less noticable, especially if you're not searchjng for it. Especially since in dry places bodies sometimes dry out instead of decomposing. (Btw I highly recommend Bass' books - amazing lecture!)

This is not the first time I heard of a single person dying in their resident and nobody noticed until we'll over a year or more. This is why you need close friends. If you suspect something isn't right or haven't heard from them in a short time, need to get a hold of the authorites so they can check upon them.

"This is why you need close friends". No shït, Sherlock! People who are totally alone don't usually decide to live like that. it may happen as a result of mental illness, trauma, family problems, abuse, etc. Sometimes people just don't have the energy or the resources to change their circumstances. Saying they need friends is like saying a person who's drowning needs to swim.

Wikipedia is truly the source of interesting, funny, or creepy facts for many internet users. But even the online encyclopedia itself cautions its users that not everything you see there may be true. In its 'reliable sources' guidelines, it is stated that Wikipedia is not a reliable source for citation elsewhere on Wikipedia.

The project admits that some entries might be incorrect, unfinished, or lack reliable sources. But that's the pitfall of being a user-generated enterprise.

"Because Wikipedia is a volunteer-run project, it cannot constantly monitor every contribution," the guidelines state. "There are many errors that remain unnoticed for hours, days, weeks, months, or even years."

    Smile Mask Syndrome

Close-up of a smiling person with red lipstick showcasing teeth and lips in a bright, natural setting for unsettling content.

It turns out the Smile horror movie franchise wasn’t entirely based on fiction. Smile mask syndrome is described as a mental disorder that causes physical illness and depression because of prolonged and unnatural smiling. Professor Makoto Natsume theorized that Japanese women, particularly in the service industry, were forced to smile even when under immense stress. As a result, they developed repetitive strain injuries and depression.

After his case, Japan decided to check on suspiciously long living citizens. It turned out that there were many cases similar to this one. And they weren't all foul plays or caused by greedy families! In many cases families lived in remote locations, far from the nearest civil offices, so not wanting to travel they just... didn't report the deaths because "what difference does it make?". Actually, these cases put some shadow on many studies about Japanese people alleged longetivity

The real reason 120 year old people are still on record, and, no, they are not receiving checks, is because the Social Security Office has not updated their computer systems because of lack of funding. Coffin Birth

Close-up of a wooden coffin with flowers nearby inside a dimly lit room, evoking a scary and unsettling atmosphere.

While the process is not fully understood and occurs very rarely, coffin birth, also known as postmortem fetal extrusion, happens when gases inside a decomposing woman’s body push out a deceased fetus. The gases responsible are carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen sulfide, which develop within two to five days after passing.

Because it doesn't need to be, and many places still do open casket funerals, so you wouldn't want a fetus just lying beside them or to pay for another casket.

Jokesters and internet vandals have made up so many fake Wikipedia articles that there is even an entry dedicated to all the hoaxes on Wikipedia. Some hoaxes were done so expertly that they went undetected for more than 10 years! Whether the smaller ones, like changing the fact that the NASA Messenger probe orbited around Canada and not Mercury, are honest mistakes or acts of vandalism, is unknown.

But others are just too big and elaborate to be considered oopsies. One of the most famous examples is the Bicholim conflict, a supposed war between Portugal and the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. In 2007, the page gained "good article" status until one editor checked the provided sources in 2012 and found that they did not exist.

    The Diving Bell Spider

Close-up of a brown spider on a bright green leaf, evoking scary and unsettling moments from Wikipedia articles.

The diving bell spider is the only spider that spends almost all its life underwater. It occasionally comes up to the surface to replenish its oxygen or to eat its prey. When it’s underwater, it uses an air bubble trapped by the hair on its stomach and legs to breathe. Allegedly, its bite is excruciating to humans and causes symptoms like vomiting and inflammation for about five to ten days.

    The Hinterkaifeck Murders

Old black and white photo of a rural farmstead evoking the eerie and unsettling feeling from scary Wikipedia articles.

The Hinterkaifeck Murders are reportedly the most gruesome unsolved crimes in Germany. In 1922, on a Bavarian farmstead, six members of a family were fatally struck with a pickaxe by an unknown perpetrator. For three days, the assailant lived and ate in the house with the corpses. When the bodies were eventually found, four of them had been stacked up in the barn with the pickaxe left above them in the loft.

    The Dancing Plague

Black and white engraving depicting unsettling group dancing and eerie figures in a dark, creepy outdoor scene.

In 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea started a dancing mania that led to about 400 people dancing nonstop for a whole month. Allegedly, at least 15 people passed away per day due to heart attacks, strokes, and exhaustion from all the dancing. While the exact cause of the dancing hysteria is unknown, several theories have been brought forward on Wikipedia, such as food poisoning, stress, and even demonic possession.

St. Vitus' dance. I looked this up once for some reason, and was since under the impression it is caused by ergot poisoning (also known as St. Antonius' Fire).

That's one explanation. According to Wikipedia there's an argument that "this theory does not seem tenable, since it is unlikely that those poisoned by ergot could have danced for days at a time. Nor would so many people have reacted to its psychotropic chemicals in the same way. The ergotism theory also fails to explain why almost every outbreak occurred somewhere along the Rhine and Moselle rivers, areas linked by water but with quite different climates and crops." An alternative explanatione is Stress-induced mass hysteria (which presents its own questionmarks)

I googled it and the veterinarian said the rats would have suffered more had they amputated the tails. Two of the rats had already died before they were found. Also I would never think that a veterinarian didn't consider amputations there must have been a reason for that decision.

    Premature Burial

Being buried alive is a frightening thing to imagine, and is reportedly one of the most common phobias in the world. People throughout history have been buried alive unintentionally through accidents and natural disasters, and as a method of execution in wars. In recent years, escape artists and even YouTubers like Mr Beast have voluntarily buried themselves alive.

While the fear of premature burial was very widespread especially in the 19th century, the occurence itself was exteremly rare. But it lead to a lot of literature (Poe's "Buried alive" and "The Cask of Amontillado" come to mind) and even a lot of stange contraptions from grave alarm systems to crypts with an autonomous air and water supply. Doctors even commonly carried a "heart knife" to apply a heart stab to patients they considered dead before burial to avoid this.

Apparently it was one of those grave contraptions that gave us the term "saved by the bell". Or so I've heard. You had a string attached to a bell above ground you could tug on to say "OI! I'm not dead!"

In medieval Tallinn it was law that for death penalty male offenders were hanged, females were buried alive. I always wondered about the logic behind that, as being buried alive sounds worse than hanging. Extra penalty for being a woman? Or did they think that a woman would like to make a prettier corpse and hanging would unduly ruin their complexion?

    The List Of Missing Aircraft

Malaysia Airlines plane taking off against cloudy sky, illustrating unsettling and scary Wikipedia articles.

Over 240 aircraft have disappeared since the 19th century. The list of missing aircraft is categorized into three groups: lost civilian flights, military flights, and flights where some wreckage was found, but the aircraft was never declared “recovered.” Included on the list, and also the flight with the most missing passengers, is the infamous Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

Malaysia flight 370 is a mystery that drives me absolutely crazy. It felt impossible for something like this to happen until it did. I’ve had a frustrating time coming to terms with the fact that it will likely never be found (at least while I’m alive.)

Israel Keyes is one of America’s most infamous serial killers. He allegedly took the lives of at least three people and committed multiple other crimes from the late ‘90s to 2012. Keyes hid “murder kits” throughout the country to use when an opportunity presented itself. During police interrogation, he admitted to preferring strangulation over using guns to take people’s lives.

The s*****g off'd himself in prison to save the taxpayers some money. He was also a friend of the Kehoes, in Colville, WA, one of whom worked for me in the late 80s. Thought he was a nice kid, he was a cheerful and hard worker, but turned out to be some kind of psychopath. So weird when I found that out.

I read about the Samantha Koenig murder. Chilling. There's a book about him. It's supposed he's responsible for a few other insane things. He was an awful person....In Granite Falls WA two women went hiking and were found shot on the trail by two other hikers. It is suspected he did that, but it's still a mystery. I lived in that area. You never imagine being unsafe when you hike back there. He was caught and offed himself. So ultimately, unsolved.

Had a family member disappear. His wife and mother each believed the other knew where he was and went to their graves blaming each other. Many years later on online message asking if one of his kids knew him led to the discovery of what happened. After traveling for work and staying there (work location) several months he simply decided he didn't want to return to his life in Missouri. Eventually moved to North Carolina and had another family. He died never reaching out or telling anyone what he did. Glad I never knew that selfish a$$hole.

Correction to this: the cameras caught him outside while ENTERING the bar, but never filmed him leaving. There was a case similar to this in Illinois a couple years back. The man's mother was up in arms, trying to pin his murder on a couple of guys who got into a shouting match with him outside the bar he was at. Mind you this happened in the middle of winter, near lake Michigan, and he was reportedly extremely inebriated. Cameras in the area picked him up while he stumbled along for several blocks, then *poof* nothing. I can't recall if they ever found him, but most believe he stumbled into the lake and drowned.

Completely standard. After thirty+ years the questions would be about whether he represents a danger to society, rather than the severity of the crime itself. He'll be on parole, on licence, or whatever the local equivalent, for the rest of his life.

It doesn't cancel it, but in most Penal Codes there's a limit to the time a person can be in jail for a crime, and a system of permits, parole, etc when they serve part of their sentence. If they don't cause problems, any prisoner has the right to apply for it. Those rights are the same for everybody, even if their crimes were horrible.

    Scaphism

Close-up of a bee on skin under dramatic lighting illustrating unsettling and scary natural occurrences in Wikipedia articles.

Scaphism is an ancient Persian method of execution that was first given as punishment by King Artaxerxes II. It involved confining the victim between two boats, with only their arms and head sticking out. The victim would then be force-fed milk and honey, while having it smeared all over them. Thereafter, they'd be left out in the scorching sun to fester and be devoured by insects and rodents.

I remember reading Anabasis and the guy running back to camp to warn them holding his bowels inside probably was pretty bad, too. The Persians were so nasty. If you look at their art, early art is opening, welcoming, and showing a peaceful civilization. After their years of conquering and failing to conquer (Athens, Alexander the Great) their art shows a more martial culture.

Handwritten eerie letter titled From hell, linked to scary Wikipedia articles about unsettling historical crimes.

George Lusk, the official chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, who was looking into the Jack the Ripper murders in 1988, received a letter that was supposedly written by Jack the Ripper himself. It read: "From hell. Mr. Lusk, I send you half the kidne I took from one woman I fried and ate it was very nise. I may send you the bloody knif that took it out if you only wate a whil longer. Project Artichoke

CIA emblem on a blue background representing unsettling and scary Wikipedia articles that intrigue readers to learn more.

Project Artichoke was a mind control program developed by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in 1951. It was used to determine whether a person could be forced into attempting an assassination after being drugged and hypnotized. The CIA would run experiments on human test subjects and sometimes, even their own agents. One agent was allegedly kept on LSD for seventy-seven days without their knowledge or consent, and probably developed amnesia like the other test subjects in the program.

My mother had radium rods stuck up her nose in the fifties for sinus issues or something. At the time she thought it was weird, but it was an era when they sprayed DDT on the beaches so... After her death I came across this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unethical_human_experimentation_in_the_United_States and I came across this in the linked page "Between 1948 and 1954, funded by the federal government, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Hospital inserted radium rods into the noses of 582 Baltimore, Maryland schoolchildren as an alternative to adenoidectomy." The page itself is scary long with some really dreadful stuff. Oh, and ever stop to wonder why they set off the nukes in Nevada instead of some remote Pacific island? Easy - the fallout will come down in Nevada and Utah and it'll give plenty of test subjects for the effects of low level radiation. Who needs enemies when you have a government like that?

I cannot fathom how it would be possible to keep someone on LSD for 77 days!?! How could the "agent" eat, drink, wash or even sleep sufficiently, especially as the doses would have to perpetually be increased, as you do develop something of a tolerance by repeated ingestion.

Crazy to realize that someday long, long in the future, our species will be gone forever. And no one will ever find our fossils, our plastics, the ruins of our cities, the shadows of our civilizations. Our time on earth will end, and no one else in the universe will know we ever existed. (Assuming we never reach interstellar travel and never colonize other planets, which I genuinely doubt will ever happen for our species).

    The Robert Doll

Creepy sailor doll holding a worn stuffed animal displayed in a museum, evoking unsettling Wikipedia article stories.

Surprisingly, Annabelle isn’t the only terrifying doll around. Robert is reportedly another haunted doll just like her. Robert was given to a boy named Robert Otto as a birthday gift after his grandfather returned from a trip to Germany. While this origin story is generally accepted as accurate, there are many other legends, like the claim that the doll was given to Otto by a Bahamian girl in an act of revenge. It’s said that the doll has supernatural abilities and can cause a ton of misfortunes.

There's a number of these on various frequencies. They're called number stations, and run by several countries. They are part of a spy network, and the numbers most likely correspond to instructions on code pads. There are also radio stations that only broadcast a carrier wave. Those are part of a "dead man switch" To trigger a full nuclear launch if the country were to be hit by a successful first strike. The EMP would shut down enough stations that it would trigger the launches automatically.

Like those numbers stations. Sometimes I think these things don't necessarily have any purpose other than trolling the intelligence of the other side. Let them waste time and resources trying to decrypt the meanings of numbers being read out by a bored man who just pulled them out of a hat. ;) [thinks: quick, how do I build a short wave transmitter?]

An unidentified man was found deceased on a beach in Adelaide, Australia, in 1948. With no signs of foul play and him not having any form of identification, investigators believed he most likely committed s*****e by consuming some sort of poison. The only things found on him were a bus ticket, a pack of cigarettes and matches, some gum, and an aluminum comb. Adding to the mystery, months after his discovery, a piece of paper was found in his pocket that said “tamám shud”, a Persian term meaning “it is over.”

    The 2016 Clown Sightings

Two scary clowns in colorful costumes and creepy makeup playfully wrestling on a grassy field in daylight.

In 2016, there were multiple reports of evil clown sightings and attacks across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. What started as a marketing stunt for a horror film turned into an unexpected phenomenon of clowns popping up in the strangest places, like forests and schools. Even businesses selling clown merchandise were adversely affected by the reports.

It was not a fun time for people who performed as clowns for children's birthday parties and similar events.

    The Dyatlov Pass Incident

Stone memorial monument with portraits and a red wreath surrounded by dense green forest, evoking unsettling Wikipedia articles.

Nine hikers in Dyatlov Pass, Russia, lost their lives under mysterious circumstances. They fled their tents in the middle of the night in freezing temperatures without an explanation. Six of the hikers passed away from hypothermia. The other three had signs of physical trauma, with one missing a tongue and the other two missing eyes. Many theories have been put forward as possible explanations for their passings, but ultimately, Russian authorities settled on some type of avalanche as the cause.

    The Villisca Axe Murders

Old newspaper clipping showing the last victims and house linked to scary and unsettling Wikipedia articles.

In 1912, in Villisca, Iowa, six members of the Moore family and two of their guests fell victim to an axe-wielding murderer. Only one victim was awake when the attack occurred; everyone else was bludgeoned in their sleep. Bizarrely, investigators found all the mirrors in the house covered. Even though there were several suspects, the case was never solved, and today, the house is a tourist attraction.

If I recall, people would often cover mirrors after a death and until the body was removed from home for final repose.

Don't worry. "Unexplained" sightings usually just contain too few data to narrow it down to a definite explanation

My take on this is simple: It's a mind boggling distance to our nearest neighbouring star, the centre of our galaxy is stupidly far away and other galaxies are unthinkable distances. Therefore any civilisation that is capable of dealing with that will be so advanced that they will be to us what we are to ants. It is pure human hubris that makes us think that such creatures would be the slightest bit interested in this dinky backwater planet orbiting an utterly unremarkable star. Plus the time and resources involved would mean that if some alien creature did visit, it would likely do it the one time, not often enough to rack up tens of thousands of sightings and an equal number of worried cows. That's just ridiculous.

By definition, anything that you can explain isn't a UFO anymore. It's an IFO.

Allegedly, the Pope Lick Monster, also known as the Goat Man, is a creature that lives under a railroad bridge in Kentucky. Described as a human-goat hybrid, urban legends claim the creature uses hypnosis or voice mimicry to lure people to the railway trestle, then murders them with a blood-stained axe. The Lava Lake Murders

Scenic lake with small islands and towering mountains under a dramatic cloudy sky, evoking eerie and unsettling Wikipedia articles.

This triple murder happened at Little Lava Lake in Oregon over 100 years ago and is reportedly one of the oldest unsolved murder cases in the city’s history. The three friends who were murdered were working as fur trappers at the lake when they suffered gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma. Their bodies were discovered under the surface of the ice, and although police had one possible suspect, no one was ever convicted of the crime.

Your eyes are very good at finding patterns in things, and when you are fuzzy and semi asleep is when your logic systems are not working correctly (otherwise you would constantly wake up at the dumb stuff that happens in dreams). So you open an eye and HOLY CRÄP THERE'S SOMEBODY STANDING THERE! You carefully and quietly pat around to find your torch while trying not to píss the bed, and WHY IS HE NOT MOVING? WHAT DOES HE WANT? WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO TO ME? You touch the torch and suddenly grab it, flick it on, and wield it like it's a lightsabre. And then realise that it's just the dressing gown you tossed over the side of the bookshelf because you were too lazy to put it away properly.
