50 Times People Asked Tattoo Artists To Cover Up Their Scars And Birthmarks And Couldn’t Be Happier With The Result
We already published an article about tattoos covering up birthmarks and another one about inking over scars so we figured why not do a piece that combines the two together. After all, millions of people have blemishes on their skin that they're not excited about and there are plenty of ways to transform them into works of art.
This list by Bored Panda is full of beautiful, funny, and simply genius designs that 'healed' old body wounds and marks. And maybe a few mental bruises that came with them as well. So scroll down to check them out for yourself, upvote your favorites, you know how it goes.

The Most Meaningful Tattoo I’ve Ever Done. Scar Cover-Up For This Amazing Woman. I Have No Words To Describe This Process
I was wondering are these burn scars? And are these more painful have tattoed than the "normal" skin? Anyway , this is beautiful.
It looks pretty much like burnt skin, it probably is. Strong woman, this must have hurt like hell
Load More Replies...To learn more about these delicate cover-ups, we contacted Jesse Whitley, the owner of Stagecoach Tattoo Co. in Lubbock, Texas. "The most experienced artists can work with or around birthmarks, whereas scar tissue can be tattooed directly over," Jesse told Bored Panda. "Tattooing over a scar actually breaks down the scar tissue."
However, Whitley highlighted that the severity of the scar will influence the artist's ability to make a good tattoo in and around the affected area. "When tattooing over a scar, you have to understand that it is a different type of skin and holds ink differently than normal unaffected skin."

A Camouflage Of Childhood Domestic Burn
It did not say domesyic abuse just domestic burn. He may have knocked over a pot
Load More Replies...Looks like burn wounds. Wow what a great tat. Nothing to see of the burn.
According to health experts, scarred skin is harder and more irregular, therefore it is less able to absorb ink than regular skin.
It's also possible that the ink will migrate and cause the tattoo to look smudged or unclear. Therefore, it's vital that people choose an experienced artist.
Everyone’s body is different. That means everyone's level of pain tolerance is different, too. However, scar tissue is generally more sensitive to the needle. For some, especially those whose scars have caused nerve damage or compression, getting a cover-up tattoo might be extremely painful.
Make The Most Of What You've Got
This is a cool tattoo! But didn't they say that line was actually never said on the show?
It was mentioned earlier that tattooing along the line of the actual scar can breakdown the scar tissue. That's a good idea, though.

What a wonderful way to use your talent. God Bless you for the joy you have given, and will be giving to other people with similar needs.
oooo, that looks like a total different foot. what a stunning design
I'd bet 💰a big part of why it looks so different is because of the difference in how they feel about it now... it shows in the pose.
Load More Replies...That would've been a painful tattoo, a scar like that must have come from pain too. This person is an absolute rock 🤘🏼
One of the people whose tattoo you see in this list is designer and art director Deepali Masand. We contacted her and Deepali agreed to share her story — the woman gave an honest account of how she ended up with this beautiful cat design.
Everything started when she was 13 and got into a car accident. Deepali's left arm got stuck between the road and the vehicle, and she ended up with a huge burn-like scar.

So sexy and dramatic. Very much Captain Blood (movie with Errol Flynn.) I hope the tattoo subject is crazy about it.
Honestly these are works of art. That’s why I love tattoes. They are works of art, fantastic art to me.

I'm glad you no longer self-harm. Whatever you've been through...you've evolved and learned, you're no longer feeling that need to self-destruct. I've been there too. Sending hugs.
Sometimes It Is Enough To Cleverly Integrate A Scar Instead Of Covering It
I have a pretty big scar on my arm and this is probably a future tattoo for me.
"Back in 2003, when the scar was still fresh, everyone suggested plastic surgery," she told Bored Panda. "But as time passed, I got really comfortable with that scar. It had stopped bothering me per se."
"Then fast-forward to 2018, when I lost my first fur baby. That [also scarred me]. I made an illustration as an ode to his passing for an Inktober prompt called 'Tranquil.' But this year, when I was about to turn 30, I decided to finally ink something that was meaningful to me, on me — I had been meaning to get a tattoo for the longest time."

This must bring so much peace and relief. None of these scars are terrible, but when it's your body you may not want to be constantly reminded of the event.

I have a massive scar down my front from having a transplant, and although I embrace it for the reason I'm still alive I do feel self conscious and reluctant to wear things that I would before, it's also the 300 questions you get asked when people see it. Some of these pictures have given me inspiration
I have one from a spinal fusion surgery (yes they went through the front and the back too) and I'd love to change it someday

The designer said she had an epiphany. "It hit me in the middle of the night. I had to cover my scar with a beautiful memory. I reached out to a very dear and supremely talented friend Arnab that very moment."

Got To Do This Rad Wine Glass To Work With A Birthmark Today

Finally Done Something With My Scar
"I had a couple of needle pokes on me as experiments but this was my first machine tattoo," Deepali explained. "The process was pretty seamless, as it was a friend who was going to ink on me. I bestowed the utmost trust upon him, as he's an animal lover too, and he just reciprocated the same."
"Arnab took inspiration from my illustration and made it his own. We built upon ideas as it went, a Van Gogh-like moon in green and blue inks and a little bit of scar to show through the moon's crater-like texture. It was meant to honor both the memory of the scar and my cat."
This Was Fun
Beautifully done! I'm a little squeamish but I love that they went for it!

Depending on the person’s pain tolerance, they may not hurt “really bad” but in general, scar tissue does hurt more to tattoo over than unscarred tissue.
Load More Replies...The scar was kinda pretty. As an artist I see that they could have used the swirls and whirls to make a really pretty colorful abstract!
Hooked
I agree, think someone may try and pull it, it is so realistic
Load More Replies...Thought it truly had a hook through his arm! Mind BLOWN! Fabulous work tattoo artist!
Deepali said she had been warned that it might hurt but everything was finished in a single 3-hour session. "I can rather proudly say that I sat like a rock, more so because it meant so much to me and also the scar area was mostly dead skin."
"It was so overwhelming to see this tattoo get so much love, those who'd met my cat, Billu, had been touched by him in some sort of way (scratches included), and it almost felt like he's getting all that love via the tattoo."

Tattoo is really amazing! Mind asking why Your armpit is green? Pain has transfered?
Deepali thinks tattoos are life-altering. "In a weird way, you feel like a different person; more aligned and aware. You also realize that pain is just something in your mind ... we can endure much more than we imagine!" And it's definitely visible in the photos.
It's we who define and give meaning to our scars. Not the other way around.

It looks like fish skin to me. Believe it or not, fish skin is sometimes used in Brazil for burn victims. The skin does not have to be replaced like gauze would and also helps fight infection.

I really don't want to sound patronising but If you're not, it does get better. Trust me.
Hugs to you for your past and hugs for your new beginning. Remember you've made it so far.
I read all the posts here and didn't know if I felt sad, because so many people have gone through this, or comforted because they showed up with support. Both, I guess. I have similar scars, and I'd just like to say that you are beautiful and worthwhile whether the scars show or not.

It's worrisome how these scars got there to begin with.... and, the tattoo is doing nothing to put my mind at ease~
I have a large Saint Michael tattoo that covers my inner forearm as part of my left arm shoulder-to-wrist sleeve. I used to engage in seif harm in a regular basis. The major depressive disorder that caused me to self harm led to a serious suicide attempt. My artist took an ugly, scarred arm that was a constant reminder of the darkest period in my life and turned it into a thing of beauty. I can now look at myself and see someone who's healing inside and out instead of seeing the broken, hurting person I was seven years ago. The scars are no longer visible, only the art that reminds me that it does get better.
Load More Replies...Aside from going all “ooh” and “ahh” at the pretty tattoos (and they ARE truly spectacular), I hope this brings to light how very real and very dangerous self-harm is. Don’t ever, ever shame someone for it, just try to get them the help they need before they do something that can’t be covered with ink.
So much easier to move on, once the hurt has escaped. New look, new life.
I worry that as time passes the details will fade and they will be left with a big blob of black ink. Not saying that it will happen, only that I hope it doesn't.
Hugs. I'm so sorry you experienced so much life pain that the relief was self-harm. Your tattoo is wicked!

Thanks To My Client For Coming In To Get This Floral Scar Distraction Piece
We went with something a little simplistic and instead of trying to hide the scars just tried to incorporate them into the design. The take away is that the blood we have spilled in sadness can water a beautiful garden of joy if you only allow room for growth. Let’s be thankful for this day of life.
Love the ingenuity of the cover ups of these scars. Tattooists really are artists, doing works of art. Smart ideas. Makes me wish I had a scar to cover up.

So, Aurelie Came To Me To A Flower Tattoo On Her Wrist Before. Today She Came With A Particular Project About Her Scar
It's something that she never really accepted, even if she got her scar when she was a little little kid. Some stuff goes with time, other don't. So we talked about what she wanted to do with it, and she told me about a quote from a French song from Saez, with a word play about sewing silk (soie) and ourself (soi). It made me think of a similar wordplay that I love in a beautiful song from Dooz Kawa, and finally, the project draw itself to end as what you can see! I was very touched to be the one to work on this project. I love scar project tattooing, and I knew it was really hard for her to let someone work on it, but she's definitely a very strong women and she was awesome!

Yes the perpendicular lines are from the stitches and the thick line from the actual injury being sutured. The stitches have to be quite tight which I think makes this effect. I have family members with similar scars but on a smaller scale (get it? Fish scale? ..... I'll go now...)

Piece of advice... before getting a scar or birthmark tattooed, discuss it with your doctor. Tattooing over those makes it hard to check for irregularities and skin cancer that can occur.
