After two members of the Bored Panda team traveled to Romania on vacation, they were absolutely inspired by this country. This often-overlooked tourist destination is a hidden gem filled with beautiful forests, regal castles and epic mountains.
Owing to its rich medieval history, Romania is positively saturated with beautiful castles in various states of repair. The country also has a huge amount of undisturbed forest (and the largest population of brown bears in Europe), making it a great destination for nature lovers. With the Carpathian mountains running through the center of the country, the combination makes for some unforgettably memorable views.

I grew up in these mountains. These flowers (Rhododendron) have a wonderful flavor, my mother used them to make a delicious syrup or jelly.

It took centuries for the construction that started in 1383 to be finally completed, the violent attacks of the Ottoman and Tatar armies destroying or at least delaying substantially the process. In the end, the church was finalized in 1477, but at a smaller scale given the scarce resources and the constant threat of a new attack against Brasov. Still, the worst came in 1689 when historical Brasov was destroyed by a devastating fire. Only the walls, the font and the treasury from the vestry survived from the edifice that is known as the Black Church ever since. The monument was rebuilt in the 18th century, but its restoration continued up to recent years.

Thanks for the photos. The Keep horror novel written by F.Paul Wilson in 1981 could be filmed here. The 1983 film was shot in Wales.

These beautiful places are in Transylvania. All used to belong to Hungary before the Trianon treaty which was the most unfair treaty in the History of Europe. All these places have Hungarian names and they have been forcefully romanized.
