My little tortie was found in a communal area bin by a friends son, unfortunately they couldn't keep her as where they were moving to was no pets. We've now had her 13 years she's only tiny,,3 kgs, but our big lab sized dog was wise to steer clear of her.

How the hell do people just abandon animals they formally took in? Especially in western countries where there are any number of ways to rehome them. These are living emotional beings, they're not plants or items, you can't just throw them away.

Sometimes, they just went for a wander, OP assumed they were strays and took them inside (so now they can't get home). Some get spooked or harassed while out alone, which can cause them to become disoriented and lost. Just two more reasons not to let them out unsupervised.

That's exactly how I ended up with my first cat family. The mother was feral that I fed, and after she gave birth I used to ask her when do I get to see her kittydids. One day, she's outside in front of my screened patio,, meowing, and I look to see her carrying one in her mouth. I go out and take the kitty in, mom disappears for a minutes, and drops another one off. I bring it inside, and she repeats the process until I have five kitties inside. And that's how I ended up with all of them for the rest of their lives. Smartest momma is cat ever. She knew I would take care of them and obviously I did!

Adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organization is a great way to save an animal's life. Most animals that we would think of as pets are pretty social and would prefer to be with a family. Some US states even have laws that prioritize shelter animals. California, for example, mandates that pet stores have to source their animals from shelters and rescues. And you don’t have to adopt to help the animals in your area! Find a shelter or rescue organization and donate to them! Many also accept pet food and other useful items. You can even volunteer with walking the animals if you want to socialize without the commitment of taking a pet home.

I helped a humming bird who flew into a window when I first moved into my house. It was ok, but took a while to recover. After about an hour it was well enough to fly off. I thought that was the end of it, but that little bird would come back when I was outside and circle around my head as if to say hello. This went on for almost 3 years until I moved. BTW, I fixed the window so it was safer- never had a bird fly into it again.

hummers are deceptively smart. we fed them (had 3 feeders always needing juice) and one lil blackchinned female, who was missing a toe, would come tap on the window if 'her' feeders went empty. we saw her return for years.

Adopted pets are just as loving and capable of forming strong bonds with their new owners as animals purchased from breeders or pet stores. Many shelter pets are already trained and have known personalities, making it easier to find the perfect pet for you. There is an old-fashioned myth that many of the animals in shelters, particularly dogs and cats, are mutts or mixed-breed. In fact, the recent popularity of purebred animals has unfortunately led to a situation where extremely rare breeds can be found in shelters. In US shelters, up to 25% of dogs may be purebred.

Many shelters and rescues conduct thorough evaluations and provide medical care for animals before putting them up for adoption, ensuring that you are getting a healthy pet. Adopting a pet from a shelter also ensures that your pet has been vaccinated and spayed or neutered. In fact, some places mandate it, so if you are worried about adopting, you can always call your closest shelter and ask!

I talked my fiancé into adopting a pair of 8 week old litter mates, though we were originally only going to adopt one kitten. He will never regret that decision. That second kitten is now my fiancé's best friend, sleeps on him every night, and practically refuses to leave his lap when he's home. She and her beautiful sister will be turning 14 in April.

They catch stray cats, spay/neuter and vaccinate them, then release them back where they were found. It's a way to combat the growing stray cat problem without risking them all being euthanized because they're not social.

Adopting an older animal has its own set of benefits, including the fact that they're often already trained and have a known personality. Older pets also tend to be calmer, making them great options for families with young children or older adults. Sometimes you can even find abandoned work animals with thoroughly impressive skill sets! As cute as they are, puppies are a lot of work! Potty training, dog school and tiny bladders mean that the first year or so can be time intensive. Older animals could fit your busy schedule better.

Adopting a pet can be a wonderful, life-changing experience for both the animal and the adopter. Not only do you get a new companion, but you also get the satisfaction of knowing you made a difference in an animal's life. Adopting a pet can also have many health benefits, such as reducing stress, decreasing depression, and increasing feelings of companionship. Dog owners in particular benefit from improved physical health, since frequent walks is great for stretching your muscles and getting some fresh air.

Technically, being blind doesn't mean zero vision. It's when vision is less than 20/200 in the better eye that's expected to last more than a year. Then there's Anton Syndrome, when the blind still believe that they can see. (Not arguing, just clarifying.)

We had the honor to ask Nina Thompson from the San Diego Humane Society some questions about adopting. "Coming to a new home can be a big change for any animal, so it’s important that you give them time to adjust and feel safe in their environment. As they become more comfortable, you’ll see your companion’s personality continue to bloom! Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment — whether you are drawn to a dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, bird, reptile or any other wonderful creature — and you should think about how they’ll grow with you. When you adopt a pet, you not only change that animal’s life, but make room in a shelter or rescue for another deserving animal in need of a second chance. Many shelters are at high capacity right now, so there’s never been a better time to adopt!"

Nice of him to pick a black cat, they often get passed over as "unlucky". But actually they tend to be healthier bc the gene for black fur also makes them more resistant to certain diseases. *edit: depending on the country, some consider them lucky.

If you have a white cat, dog or horse, it's a good idea to test them for deafness and to use sunscreen on their nose, etc when they're out in the summer sun for any length of time.

Puppy looks like he has microphthalmia to a degree, so likely has vision issues and probably deaf as well, as you say :) They do need sun protection for sure!

Always check for Xylitol (or any similar word w/X in it) in your peanut butter before giving it to dogs! It's so toxic that a small amount will cause blood sugar levels to drop and it'll damage the liver. They need to get to the Vet for a glucose IV & liver protecting medications.

Probably being the key word. My grandson's tamed & trained cat Mittens, who slept in his bed with him every night, came back so traumatized that he was the only one who could get near her after she returned from being spayed. We don't use that Vet anymore😾

Of course it escaped… it is a Beagle that is what they do best. When we got our beagle we lived in a house with a very well fenced yard so she never got out but once I left there I no longer had that “full time babysitter for her”. I would have the door open for a second chatting someone while trying to block her but off she would go. I have never been nor cared to be a runner but I got damn good because that girl was NOT ending up anywhere but home.

I would talk to a vet just to be sure. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing and she's alright, but an ounce of prevention can stop a pound of trouble

Could be an adjustment in food. When I took in my last cat she was SBD for the first couple of weeks

If you rescued her off the street, then she’s been eating whatever she could find, probably garbage. That’s why her farts stink, and I bet the cat box is pretty disgusting too. When I rescue cats, I put them on a diet of Iams cat food for a week or two, as it tends to reset their digestion—-and their farts—-to normal (and odor-free). You can go back to less expensive cat food after that. If that doesn’t work, consult your vet.

Our rescue kitten had the same issue when we first adopted her. She could clear the room! It turned out her gut just needed time to mature. Thankfully! She's 16 now and I'm not sure we could have dealt with being gassed out for that long. :)

What a sweetie, I thought adoption was through a shelter only. And via ya breeder you buy. But maybe since the 'adopt don't shop' slogan people would rather be seen as adopters than buyers

Adoption is via shelter or foster. There are pure breeds in shelters but a lot of people seem to pretend they adopted. (no idea what's the case here)

⚠️PSA⚠️While Romeo & Juliet isn't too bad for this, naming animals using common, daily words makes it even harder to grieve after they're gone. You just cannot get away from being reminded of their passing.

I love my void! I have to admit I'm not sure I would have chosen to adopt one as I am partial to tuxedos and grays, but she walked into the open door of our office building as a kitten 6 years ago, and adopted herself ;) I named her Kohl. I love her and I can't believe I ever thought that voids were not photogenic. I wish you luck on your quest to adopt a void!

This is actually a genetic mutation called heterochromia. Hetero means different and chrom means color. It's when two different genes are expressed the same amount. There's both complete heterochromia, which this dog has, and sectoral heterochromia, which is when only sections of the eyes are different colors. Fun fact, I suppose!

Doesn't the white on her make her a tuxedo kitty?

    Lakota Wolf
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It depends. The CFA (Cat Fancier Association) rules state that a solid-colored cat with a locket at the throat (like this kitty) or a button (white patch) on the chest do not count as bicolor (tuxedo) cats. Other cat organizations may classify it differently. In my own opinion, this would still be a black cat. A spot of white on the throat/chest isn't enough to classify it as a tuxie. Once a cat has white on the face or paws, then it's a tuxedo. That's just my opinion, though! XD

I don't understand the concept of stray animals. Makes me sad, but I'm so happy for him.

She looks just like my kitty Magic, when I adopted her. Magic is the perfect name for a cat because it's what she is and what she does - she is now a registered Invisible Disabilities Assistance Animal x

I have had 2 of these fluffs. One was named Krikkit and the other Sassafrass - who turns 18 in May.

Sometimes this type of rescue means another home is missing their pet, especially for cats. 😢
