It's 11 p.m., your faucet starts leaking, and there's no way your plumber will answer their phone. What do you do? You could, of course, wait for the morning and probably watch your room fill up with water in the process. Or, you could slap some duct tape on that baby and call it a day.

The latter sounds like it's straight from the Redneck Engineering subreddit, doesn't it? Well, maybe because it is. That's a community where people share questionable, sometimes even silly solutions that shouldn't seem to work, but somehow do. Scroll down and see what the DIY engineers were up to since the last time we featured the subreddit on Bored Panda!

Brakes can get wet, and hubs have seals. I'd be a tad bit concerned about the vent tube for the rear differential, but if its properly mounted nothing bad will come of this.

The Redneck Engineering community celebrates the successful (?) attempts at fixing things up. There's nothing wrong with a little DIY at home. In fact, 75% of American homeowners claim they have tried out some sort of a DIY project. Most people (62%) say they tackle home repairs or renovations themselves because it's cheaper.

At the same time, around 80% said they've made mistakes when DIY'ing something, and 45% said they've completely butchered a DIY project at least once. So, it seems that DIY isn't always the be-all and end-all, and it's useful to know when it's best to put the hammer down and call a professional.

Perhaps the most obvious risk when DIYing home projects is doing electrical work. We often imagine we'll end up looking like Marv from Home Alone 2, but experts warn that faulty electrical work done by an amateur can be seriously dangerous.

According to Chuck Khiel of Case Architects and Remodelers, vice president of the Schedule Fred division, "The real risk is fire." There are 51,000 home fires in the U.S. every year. In some cases, you might even need a permit if you're planning to do electrical work like adding electrical outlets.

Major plumbing repairs should also be left to the professionals. While fixing leaky faucets and pipes is something people can definitely DIY, things like adding or moving plumbing fixtures, replacing pipes and water heaters, or repairing/installing septic tanks or dry wells are not something an average homeowner can do.

My voice when reporting this to the manager was the highest pitched it has ever been. I still feel like I'm losing my mind thinking about it. One of the most popular things people DIY nowadays are decks. Kiehl warns that many homeowners might need a permit for that as well, whether you're doing it yourself or hiring a professional. The experts at Timber Tech write that you'll need to take many things into account if you want to build your own deck: assess the substructure, the materials, and the scope, getting familiar with the installation process and the tools.

In some jurisdictions, you might need a permit to remove a tree as well, so always check for that!

Okay, there are lots of things that we can't DIY. But what can we do, then? If you're not Bob the Builder but you like to get your hands dirty once in a while, you can do simpler home improvement projects or fix things like a clogged toilet, jammed garbage disposal, wall holes, or walls that need a little TLC (paint).

When I was a teenager I worked at a place that rented UHaul trucks. Someone rented one about that size from us and proceeded to fill it full of chopped firewood. Apparently they wanted to transport it all at once to their cabin. Well, wood is quite heavy and they overloaded the truck several times over. When the UHaul mobile service truck got to the breakdown, the transmission was destroyed and they had blown out half the tires it. I'm sure there was other damage too but those were the obvious problems. Pretty sure they ended up totaling the truck and suing the person that rented it.

Surprisingly, upholstering is something you can do by yourself. While the thing you upholster might not be a $3,000 intricate couch, some things can be pretty simple. According to Ana Verdi, a designer at Thompson Fine Home Renovation, homeowners can upholster "anything with straight lines." You just need a staple gun and some fabric, and you should be good to go after a few YouTube tutorials.

Another annoying problem that a little DIY can solve is squeaky hinges. Whether it's a door, a window, or a cabinet door, most folks should be able to fix it in almost no time. And you don’t need a specialty lubricant—petroleum jelly, bar soap, or even olive oil can work just as well.

Saw on facebook. Pulled behind a tractor. OP states the mower with the handle was clipped on so he could remove it to mow around trees. I'm not sure how he started the on with no shroud over the flywheel/pull start handle. But if he's this handy, I'm sure he had his ways.

70 years old which probably means a fixed income. As someone on disability, which is a fraction of what I made working, every single penny counts. That's not an exaggeration. Why spend the money on something, just because the handle broke? The lid is perfectly fine, all she needed was to make a handle. I would do the same thing. I grew up poor, so you have to learn to make a penny scream.

Just pop the lid of the tank off and pull the flipper up to flush, then drop it back down so the tank can refill. It'll work until you can buy and install a new handle, which you can get at any hardware store. Pretty simple and cheap too fix it.

It works until you can get a permanent fix and keep you from being pulled over by a cop. Depending on the make and model of the car, you can't just pop over to the automotive store to get a replacement. It might be a part and piece that has to be ordered and sometimes that can take awhile depending on availability. This happened to 2 different members of my family so I have prior experience with this type of s**t.

One more time, if he's using a cane then he's probably on disability or social security of some kind.. $10 may not seem like a lot of money, but if you're on a fixed income, literally every penny counts. I get a fraction of what I made working, so I have to stretch every penny I can get. I get to much on disability so I don't qualify for Medicare C and D, which means prescriptions, dental, vision and hearing is 100% out of pocket. I spend $400 a month on prescriptions alone and that is with getting a discount on 4 of the one's I take. $10 will pay for my blood pressure medication or I can buy a package of sandwich meat, sliced cheese and bread, which is multiple meals for me. I can buy 10 cans of cat food, the point is that for some of us we don't have the option of spending just $10 on a freaking cane.

No. Glass is both an electrical and thermal insulator, CPU's are outputting dozens to many hundreds of watts from an area about half the size of a postage stamp, putting something that is not thermally conductive on top, is allowing the heat to build up more more easily. Will you get away with doing this for long enough to verify that it post? Maybe, but longer than about 20-30 seconds and you're risking damage. Second.....the fact that there is ICE in the water, means condensation is going to form almost immediately upon power going to the CPU....and any amount of water getting in, or around the socket while it's running is pretty much guaranteed to kill the board, the chip, and quite possibly anything else connected. Sub-ambient cooling (such as with dry ice, liquid nitrogen or even just chilled water....requires smearing dielectric grease INSIDE the cpu socket, coating the entire board with clear nail polish and building out neoprene insulation around the socket and heatsink.

I used to repair guitar amplifiers. Many times amps were brought in because the main fuse kept blowing. It is an obvious sign of a short inside somewhere. But the owners would wrap aluminum foil around the blown fuse and shove it back into the fuse holder. Then what happens is there is no more current limiting from the fuse and whatever is shorted gets to draw as much current as possible until the circuit board burn up.

Dual-tube fuses are definitely a thing, and look just like this. They are most often used in applications with very high inrush current. This hackjob looks like an attempt to keep equipment in operation after the failure of a soft-start module.

Or, they didn't have the right physical size fuse so just soldered an equivalent rating fuse on the blown one

If it ain’t broke, you’re not trying. When the going gets tough, switch to power tools.

Somehow I think fixing whatever is broken would be a better idea. Forcing it to stay on if it's turning itself off sounds like overriding a safety mechanism. Which in turn sounds like a good way to blow up your house.

Yeah....if it's turning itself off, the circuit is either being overloaded, which means the wiring is pulling more electricity than it can safely maintain with the potential to start a fire, or there's a short somewhere within the electronics of the oven itself....which is also likely to cause a fire. This isn't a solution, it's being actively dumb.

Its a gas oven. There is a thermo-element in them which shuts the gas off if there is no flame. In older ovens if they get faulty, you can bypass them by holding the k**b pushed in constantly, however newer ones are impossible to switch on unless you have a constant pilot light after you released the k**b from pushed-in position.

When i still lived in the states, part of our garage of the place we were renting had been converted into a little office. Like 400sq ft, AC and it's own bathroom, detached from the house, so i claimed it as my room. There were like 2 levels of shelves along all of the walls the lower of which was at the perfect height to mount a cheapo monitor arm, upside down over my bed. Twas heavenly.

If it overheats it'll make a moderate pop, and that's about it. If you're very very unlucky the brass might split, AND be thrown in precisely the right direction to hit you AND cause an injury when it hits. But mostly it'll just make you and any passengers jump out of their skins.
