Saturn Through My 6" Telescope
It's weird how the Earth is flat, yet all the other planets in our solar system are round. (Insert sarcasm.) 🤔
the true-flerfs think that space is fake, cgi, holograms, or some similar.. 😅
Load More Replies...Galileo was using a telescope a bout 4ft long and 3in wide and thought Saturn had "ears". That was cutting edge technology in the 16th century. Today consumer grade tech gets you this.
One night in Madrid some dudes had a telescope to show for free, i was totally drunk but i can't forget looking at Saturn like this, that was so awesome. So many years later thanks to these awesome people that bothered to show Saturn for free.
I know this may sound silly but it is cool how it really is as colorful as the drawings we always see

Grandala Birds. While Females Are Brown With White Streaks All Over The Head, Males Are Almost Eye-Searing Blue
Forget you're primate predilections. In birds, the males look pretty for the females. Peacocks, Parrots etc.
And females are camo for protection against predators.
Load More Replies...I would want to be that brilliant blue if I was a bird. Wouldn't you?
I mean, it doesn't do great things for not getting eaten.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure there's some generalization about the flashiness of male birds & monogamy*. (I apologize for not finding it myself but I'm really tired.) * Even though I say “monogamy” genetic studies show birds aren't really monogamous although I don't know how they compare to monogamous humans. OTOH, the famous monogamous Prairie Voles strike me as actually so because females are known to kill strange males who wander into their territory. 😳
Load More Replies...Have you ever realized that you’ve driven yourself home without really paying attention to the road? Scientists studying the brain have found that when our mind wanders, it switches to “autopilot” mode, allowing us to do our tasks efficiently, accurately, and without conscious effort.
This is managed by a set of brain structures called the default mode network (DMN). It was discovered in the 1990s after researchers noticed brain activity in people, even though they weren’t doing anything. This detection was the first evidence that our brains are active even when we aren’t consciously putting them to work.
This Colorful And Rare Python
I don’t mean to be rude or anything but why is it a pride snake if it’s just colorful? Can’t it just be colorful and NOT a pride snake? Please don’t downvote me to h3ll for this lol. Just asking a question!

I Was On My Way To Phoenix And I Captured One Of The Craziest Photos... Lightning Through The Clouds
Beautiful. Audi would try to pounce the lightning, though.
Another reason why some things go unnoticed by us is called habituation. This near-universal law of psychology claims that we stop noticing something we see or hear repeatedly. Most of us are familiar with the Apple logo and see it every day, but chances are, we can't recall the details of it. And if you aren’t convinced, try doing this test.
We often overlook trivial things in life, because they don’t matter as much. Let’s take the sound of an alarm clock in the morning as another example. When you choose a new ringtone for it, the noise wakes you up faster, as initially, you pay more attention to it, and it becomes distracting. After a while, you get used to the sound, and your response to it diminishes.
So It Snowed On The Cabbage Field
Isn't that terrible? I know cabbage is considered a cold crop, but it looks to me as they would be ruined. That would be a lot of dead cabbage.
As an Aussie, where I never experience snow, can someone please tell me what effect this snow has on the cabbages?
I would draw happy faces on them and perform a song in front of them. Obviously, no applause expected.
This Tree In My Neighborhood Has 1 Branch Of An Apple Tree And The Rest Is A Normal Tree
They are but they don't "breed true". Every seed from an apple is going to grow a different kind of apple tree. As a result, all apple trees grown for food are clones. I learned that from Michael Pollan's "Botany of Desire". Fascinating book BTW.
Load More Replies...A lot of nurseries here in Arizona sell Fruit Cocktail Trees with sometimes up to 5 different fruits done by "budding" or grafting. Fruits can include peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots and oranges.
When I was little, I watched my grandpa graft a pear branch on an apple tree, and an apple branch on a pear tree. They produced some nice fruits when I was a teen! Not a branch, just a twig.
As a kid 45 years ago I visited an old gardener who only had room for 1 tree in the little garden of his house. But that tree had 4 kinds of apples and 2 kinds of pears. He had nurtured that one tree for 50 years, and it still stands even if his house was torn down over 30 years ago.
Bird's Eyelashes Are Tiny Feathers
Some birds have eyelashes that look like hairs. Secretary birds and ground hornbills have lashes to die for. :)
As a result, this ability helps us to focus on the things that are more important. In fact, habituation happens regularly in our day-to-day lives when we are learning, even if we don’t realize it.
It allows us to tune out non-essential stimuli and focus on the tasks that really demand our attention. For instance, if you’re studying with the television playing in the background, the noise might be distracting at first, but your brain allows you to tune it out and center your focus on the material at hand.
Found In The Backyard: A Rare And Endangered Peregrine Falcon - The Fastest Bird On The Continent (The Wildlife Commission Reunited Him With His Family)

If they're moon jellies, you can carefully touch them without too much worry. No long tentacles and only a mild sting, if any. I touched one snorkeling in Mexico and it was very cool. All other types of jellyfish are a hard nope.

Here Is A Hummingbird Nest My Wife Found. I Don't Think I've Ever Seen One Before
My mom has a hummingbird feeder and they're so fun to watch. A lot of the time they chase each other around and it's like tiny little blurs everywhere.
I had a couple of hummingbirds make a nest on top of my wind chimes on the back patio. I was able to see the baby birds grow up and eventually leave the nest.
And if you ever feel like you can no longer smell your perfume, it’s not because it expired or you lost your sense of smell; most likely, you just stopped noticing it. Others around you still detect the smell, even though you aren’t aware of it.

Little Golden Beetle
Oh man. Those bite. I've seen them in Queen Anne in Seattle. Ladybug family I believe.
No, the predecessor to the magical winged ball was actually a bird called the golden snidget. They’re a protected species now, but they used to be common and hunting them was quite popular. Quidditch originally didn’t have the snitch, but then in 1269, Barberus Bragge, Chief off the Wizards’ Council, brought a golden snidget to a game and said that whichever player caught it would get 150 Galleons. One person, Madam Modesty Rabnott of Kent, was outraged and caught the snidget and released it unharmed, but soon a snidget was being released at EVERY quidditch game and a player called the “hunter” was tasked with trying to catch it and kill it. The crowd used repelling spells to keep the poor thing from escaping. The golden snidget nearly went extinct, and killing it or using it in quidditch games was outlawed. So that’s why Bowman Wright of Godric’s Hollow invented the Golden Snitch. :) Source: my copy of Quidditch Through the Ages

Beautiful. Also known as goldbugs, or golden lady bugs, golden tortoise beetles are a common garden pest that chew through the leaves of various plants, especially morning glory vines and sweet potato vines.

Habituation can have several other real-life consequences, including our social interactions. It can decrease interest in or sensitivity to a partner’s needs or emotions. The significant other might be taken for granted, which can cause disagreements in the long run.

there were hundreds of these taken on Apollo 14. Some Moon Trees continue to flourish, but no list was ever kept nor any systematic tracking made of the disposition of all the trees.

This can also lead to boredom or a lack of interest in activities that the person once found appealing and engaging. It can further impact their motivation and sense of enjoyment in life, causing them to disconnect from others. They may even miss a spherical cloud moving through the sky or hikers dressed in medieval costumes. Similarly, the person may experience a lack of curiosity and exploration, resulting in decreased learning and knowledge acquisition.

Bees On A Plane. Picture Was Taken By My Dad After Landing At Houston Airport. The Outgoing Flight Was Delayed For “Bee Removal”
Quote from my dad, “I’ve been flying planes for 35 years, I've delayed a lot of flights for a bunch of reasons but bees is a first.”
I hope they retrieved the swarm with the help of a beekeeper. We had a swarm in our garden once, it was amazing. We found the local beekeeper and he gave us two jars of honey - the hives were only a couple of fields away.
Swarming. There is a thread apparently documenting i all on twitter, but I don't have an account there so maybe others can read it - https://twitter.com/AnjaliEnjeti/status/1653813099932135449 - but it ended with them starting up the plane to move it somewhere to work out how to remove the bees, and the vibration from the engine made them all fly off, so everything ended just fine.
Lmao they're thought it would take a genius plan

The Size Of A Fiber Optic Wire Capable Of Supplying A Home With High-Speed Internet
Now I’m imagining John Holmes getting stuck in there. Well, not all of him, but rather just his stick.
Load More Replies...I used to work with these. The clear fibers are glass and are coated with different colored "cladding" so you can tell them apart when working with them. Since they're glass, working with them requires safety glasses, and if you get a splinter in your finger it takes a long time for it to work its way out. I worked at a Corning cable plant for 4-5 years and there are 12 different colors you can use. :)
If it's this small, why did they dig such big holes.in everybody's yards to intsall them?
because chances are you're not getting a single fiber running through, it's multiple fibers bound in a cable, each fiber goes to a different destination. I wish they were bigger, myself. ruined my eyes squinting trying to work with them lol

This Weird Tree I Found In Northeast Washington
A 'Witch's broom' ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch%27s_broom
Load More Replies...Many things are weird in the Pacific Northwest. Many things.
There are weird plant deformities sometimes caused by parasites like mistletoe or insects. This reminds me of some insect galls I've seen, though none quite so gigantic. The biggest one I've seen was on a Torrey Pine and it was about the size of a large disco ball. Galls are pretty interesting, if you've ever seen an oak "apple" that's also a type of gall.
we learned about this recently. It appears there's a fungus that excretes a substance that messes with the growth hormones of the tree. normally they're "switched off" along the tree as it grows and the lower branches die and fall off (called self pruning). The fungus tricks the plant into starting to grow branches again.
Insect infestation releases plant growth hormone producing galls or unusual branch and leaf growth.

Has Anyone Ever Seen A Storm Cloud Like This?
A cumulonimbus incas (anvil top) cloud, a thunderstorm in it's mature stage.
Ignoring the track light reflections on the window, it looks like a microburst at sunset. Its beautiful but I wouldn't want to be under it. Its like a reverse tornado. The structure of a raincloud collapses and forms a massive column of downward pressure that sucks all of the moisture out of it. The bottom of the cloud is less than 2 mi/3.2 km wide but it dumps 2-5 inches of rain on that area in under 15 minutes.
It's hard for me to ignore the track light reflections. They still look like alien craft to me.

This Stairway In This Hotel Goes Straight Forward 13 Floors Without Any Switchbacks
Its a fire escape for a large building with entrances on the floors with express elevators. It was a solution derived after the World Trade Center. The stairwells clogged up while the building was collapsing. Elevators at higher floors can be kept running and they only dump people out in large clumps every so often or people can walk down other stairs and switch over. Its a physical manifestation that works like a traffic light to reduce congestion and increase the number that actually can traverse it. Spit out 300 people every 10-15 floors and there is no one in their way between the entrances. The guy who came up with the idea got it from an 90s game called SimTower.
