50 Photographs From Behind The Scenes That Show A Lesser-Known Side Of Fame (New Pics)
Anyone who has been on a film set knows that the smallest scene, for example, two characters having a cup of coffee at a table, requires a massive team, wielding a whole host of equipment. Sometimes, just the creation of a film can be a tale stranger than fiction, but fortunately for all of us, forward-thinking people have documented a lot of behind-the-scenes moments from famous films.
The “Far Out Cinema” Facebook page gathers interesting, illuminating, and just plain fascinating bits of information from the sets of films we all know and love. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorites, and be sure to comment your thoughts below.

The Voices Of The Flintstones (1960s)
Interesting tidbit: The guy playing Barney is Mel Blanc who was responsible for MANY of the voices in the Bugs Bunny cartoons (including Bugs himself.)
Don't know the others, but Bea Benaderet (Kate from Petticoat Junction) is Betty's voice.
Bea Benaderet was Betty! She was a pretty famous voice actor, too! And Alan Reed was a very good character actor.
Alan Reed did a guest role as an auctioneer in an episode of The D**k Van Dyke Show called "The Masterpiece" (series 3, episode 2).
Load More Replies...And yet, one of them would be denied her own likeness in vitamin-form for 27 years. Smh.
Could you please explain it? I have seriously no idea what you are taking about.
Load More Replies...I remember Bea Benaderet as the mother from Petticoat Junction! I never knew she was Betty!
Jim Carrey And Eddie Murphy Pose For A Photo After Running Into Each Other Working On The Same Studio Set (2000)
What's crazy for me is how this doesn't seem that long ago
Load More Replies...The Grinch was a really impressive live-action adaptation from a costume perspective
Same studio, but it would be strange if they were working on the same set. 😅
Ah yes, I remember being a teenager struggling with weight issues and being constantly humiliated by movies with a skinny person in a fat suit. They made it infinitely harder cause all my friends and family took their work as justification for being pricks. F**k all y'all
Steven Spielberg Filmed E.t. In Chronological Order In Order To Help The Child Actors And To Capture The Most Real Emotions During The Ending, Since It Would Be The Last Time They’d All Be Together
Apparently Drew Barrymore thought ET was real and between takes she would talk to it and Steven Spielberg made sure someone was operating it at all times so not to destroy her illusions.
This photo is poignant from our vantage point in 2023. None of those people knew at the time that that little girl would grow up to vomit all over the bathroom and eat people. How could they? Just look at her.
If I remember correctly, this is rarely done because it's much more expensive.
It is. Usually when multiple scenes take place in the same location, then you want to film them all there to save time and money.
Load More Replies...While the younger generation might be completely unfamiliar with this, film DVDs, generally, come with a lot more than just the film. There will be language options, subtitles, and quite often deleted scenes. For superfans of a particular movie, and if you already bought the DVD, it’s a safe guess, a major selling point was access to behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage.
Behind-the-scenes footage, naturally, can’t just be created later as an extra, all through the filming process people have to be documenting the work, then spend many hours editing, cutting, and stitching the entire thing together.
The Podrace Crowd In The Phantom Menace Wasn't Cgi - It's A Load Of Colourful Q-Tips Pushed Through A Grate And Blown By A Fan
That's what happens if you can't just drown everything in CGI. SFX people back then were asking themselves "okay, how can we realise that?" all the time. The blaster sounds in Star Wars? Striking a radio tower's guy-wires with a monkey wrench (https://youtu.be/fl0wIdGxfbQ). The shaking water cup on the dashboard when the T-Rex comes around for the first time in Jurassic Park? A guitar string beneath the dashboard (https://www.businessinsider.com/jurassic-park-water-cup-2015-6). It's these ingenious little things that make me admire special effects people <3
Load More Replies...Wow. Something that looks so massive and so real on screen turns out to be a bunch of Q-tips. Amazing.
Q-Tips are pretty good, but something tells me they went with the cheaper (non-union) alternative, "cotton swabs".
Load More Replies...ILM always does incredible work. Sadly, this movie is almost unwatchable.
Smart adding in a few Star Wars micro playset figures to give the scene some detail. In motion people never noticed.
Harrison Ford And The Oscar Winning, Ke Huy Quan, On The Set Of Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984)
The nightclub scene (Club Obi-Wan) was absolutely insane and defied the laws of physics. Other than that, I can see how it may have disappointed you, Shyla...

Sean Gunn is a very talented man. He's won awards for his motion capture work and does everything but direct on his brother James' films
It tore my heart out when they got his friends
Load More Replies...Wait! Rocket isn't a real raccoon? I don't get it I don't understand
What on earth is this? The others are explanatory.
It's mo cap. The image on top is what was in the film but underneath is what it.looked like before the cgi.
Load More Replies...“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, for example, had over six hours of BTS footage, going all the way back to drawing boards to sets and costumes. This would create comical moments on set, where one camera would be filming another camera, which, in turn, would be focused on the actors on the set.
Carrie Fisher On A Train To Norway To Film Parts Of The Empire Strikes Back In 1979
Still sad about her death, R.I.E.P Carrie Fisher. Gone way too soon.
What's the "E" for in R.I.E.P.? Never seen that before
Load More Replies...Actually, the next stop is Finse and the Hardangerjøkulen (glacier) where the film was shot as the ice planet Hoth.

Chadwick Boseman On The Set Of 'Avengers: Endgame'
A Great Man and a great talent. Taken from the world way too soon. May he Rest in Peace with the Angels.
Helena Bonham Carter On The Set Of Harry Potter
I'm always amazed at how much work and creativity goes into the costumes. And with all the quick cuts, you usually don't see that and can't appreciate it.
Just curious - does anyone know what was up with all the wooden crutches in the background? Were they part of the movie somehow?
One of the producers of the “making of” content for “The Lord of the Rings” stated that, in total, over twenty hours of footage was gathered, dwarfing the actual length of the three films combined by a few hours. This raw footage was then cut into the aforementioned six-hour documentary, although unused parts still made their way into the DVDs and supplementary content online.
Magic In Harry Potter
She looks like she is trying really hard not to notice them. I wonder how many takes it took.
Apparently she was a bit of a one take wonder, at least in the first couple of movies where as the boys would often mess up their lines or get a bit bored halfway through. (First and second movie, can't blame them they were like 10-12)
Load More Replies...Book binding is actually pretty cool! I used to work as a bindery labourer, working with books, menus, 3-ring binders and the like. It was a lot of fun 🙂
Load More Replies...I liked learning that she brought her real homework to work on on set in scenes where she's shown studying. That's such a Hermione thing to do.
Mel Brooks Takes The Cast Of Young Frankenstein Out For Lunch In Beverly Hills During Filming (1974)
Please tell me they were eating at the Ritz! 🤣
Load More Replies...He was a handsome man, but also had a lovely personality.
Load More Replies...Imagine deciding to have a nice, peaceful lunch that day and then this table is seated next to you 😂
Old School Batman
The old 1967 Batman looks truly bizarre and wonderfully campy. Come on- the Joker and Batman had a surging competition for crying out loud. surfsup-64...83b58c.jpg
The BEST Batman, there was no muscle suit or special effects, it was aaallll West
One of the TV shows I grew up with. It was almost always very cheesy but that was part of the campy fun. It was not until I was older and saw movies such as the dark knight and batman returns and such that I learned the 'real' (canon) Batman story was darker than the kids' show I watched in the 60s.
I was obsessed with this show when I was a little kid. I'd watch it while playing with my Barbie sized Batman and Robin action figures and their Bat Mobile. I always wonder what happened to those. Wish I still had them.
While it varies from production to production, certain crews even set out to create a film about the creation of the film, which is normally treated in a lighthearted manner. Technically, it’s a documentary, but film crews often see it as a means to let off steam and joke around, instead of actually developing a story about the film being made.
The Burns Twins Outside The Huge Maze On The Set Of 'The Shining'
Hello, Danny... Come and play with us... Come and play with us, Danny... forever... and ever... and ever...
I think it is the hair styles and the clothing but they sort of look like tiny adults.
Yeah, David - I've always thought that as well!
Load More Replies...I didn't realise they were actual twins, I thought one had been doubled in the editing!
Stuart Freeborn, Creator Of Yoda In The Late 1970s
Filming 'The Empire Strikes Back' Credit Roll (1980)
Many special effects and stuff in films look normal now with all the computers and graphics, but forty years ago (Jesus Christ, 40!!!!) they needed a lot of ingenuity, effort and creativity. I saw how some of these scenes were shot and it's mind-blowing.
Load More Replies...For the later movies they actually used text blocks the size of planets in space. /s
Load More Replies...TIL. I always thought it was done on computer. Computers were less powerful back then but since it was just text I figured they just slanted it in some software.
the first movie was in 1974, there was no such thing as computer graphics then, not even typesetting
Load More Replies...We forget how incredibly innocent we were (and how incredibly talented Lucas et al were)! Of course! this is how it was done 41(!!!) years ago but it still makes us giggle a bit at the "technology" we were in awe over.
This is older than Star Wars. They were doing that scroll effect for movie serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in the 30s and 40s.
Wonder what that string is for. Maybe to get the camera aligned with the text scroll?
This footage and other images taken from movie sets provide interesting insight into a lot of the technology employed in modern filmmaking. For example, Benedict Cumberbatch, who voices the dragon Smaug, in “The Hobbit,” also provided some motion capture footage with his own body. If it wasn’t for BTS footage, we would not be able to enjoy seeing this professional actor writhe around on the ground for a role.
Behind The Scenes With Doc & Einstein On Back To The Future Part II
And Einstein looks like he’s perfectly content to lay down near Christopher Lloyd, who evidently must be a dog person.

Scene 1, Take 1 Of Forrest Gump In 1994
I assume Russel Stover Chocolates paid good money for their product placement in that movie? Iconically, it should've been a Whitman's Sampler.
Eric Idle And George Harrison On The Set Of Life Of Brian (1978)
I miss Monty Python and Mel Brooks movies. We don't seem to get that kind of zany fun anymore.
Too many classic quotes to mention but perhaps my favourite "He IS the Messiah - I should know, I've followed a few". Wonderful.
"He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy." ;-)
Load More Replies...All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIIIGHT SIDE OF LIFE, DO DO, DO DO, DODO DODO DODO
It’s also a good way to document the crew that puts countless hours of hard, sometimes dangerous work into bringing a film to fruition. The people in front of the cameras have an important role, but they also get the lion's share of fame. It also helps humanize the cast, whom many people might accidentally associate too much with the role individual actors play.
Behind The Scenes Of The Iconic Fight Scene Between Lucy Liu And Uma Thurman In ‘Kill Bill’ (2003)
Why are you hugging Lucy?! She clearly needs to see a doctor immediately!
20 years ago already? I can't with this 'time passing so fast' sh*t anymore!

Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock & Dennis Hopper On The Set Of Speed In (1993)
Upvote for Keanu Reeves. He is a beautiful soul, great human and a very good role model. Team Keanu. X
oh you mean that movie about a bus that had to speed around the city, keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, the bus would explode??
Load More Replies...This was the first R rated movie my parents said I was allowed to watch (I was 12), so I watched it over and over again, dozens and dozens of times. Good flick.
One might have already noticed that many of the images here are taken from films shot in the early 2000s. The advent of CGI has, perhaps unfortunately, meant that directors often use greenscreen for nearly everything. While this does allow for more freedom and creativity, it does mean that most BTS images from a modern set look like a home where someone just loves green paint.
Behind The Scenes Of Spiderman No Way Home
Why seven of them, though, instead of three actors and three stunt doubles?
I belive two stunt doubles each for Andrew and Toby and none for Tom as he does his own stunts
Load More Replies...Potentially two not enough Tom does his own stunts
Load More Replies...I still think it was a *massive* missed opportunity not to have 70s Spidey Nicholas Hammond make a cameo appearance.

Marlon Brando Before And After Getting His Make Up Done To Be Don Vito Corleone
I heard he put cotton balls in his cheeks to help him with his "accent".
I believe cotton balls were first used when he was showing the director what he wanted to do. They then gave him something more permanent to use during the actual filming.
Load More Replies...I had no idea he was so young at this point. I knew he wore makeup, but didn't realize it was to age him.
Load More Replies...Loved that movie, the others were good, but the original(?) was a work of art.
I honestly think Godfather 2 is superior, but they’re both great. (We ignore the 3rd.)
Load More Replies...He was a very handsome man. Beautiful even. Not that I'm jealous or anything.
Looks like they aged him a bit too, wwhite whiskers in his moustache and eyebrows, and white streaks through his hair.
Other times, the BTS footage has specific goals in mind, for example, in the extra features for “Star Wars Episode 2: The Attack of the Clones,” there were featurettes focusing on costume design, the creation of the various aliens and segments focusing on the casting. While a very niche topic, this is invaluable for anyone wanting to pick the crew’s brains on why certain decisions ended up being made.
Russell Crowe, Cigarette In Hand, And Joaquin Phoenix Share A Joke While Filming Their Final Duel For Gladiator (1999)
I can hear the guys playing the emperor's guards thinking "get on with it guys, it's hot in full sun with these armours on"
Alan Rickman Photographed Whilst Filming 'Die Hard' (1988)
When he fell from the building at the end of the film, he was told he was going to be dropped on the count of 3 but he was actually dropped on 1 so the look of fear on his face was actually real as he thought something had gone wrong
I came here to verify that someone would post this fact unprompted.
Load More Replies...I still think of that particular scene as one of the worst blue/greenscreening in all of cinema history, but at least it didn’t wreck one of the all-time great action movies.
On The Set Of ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)
Totally agree!!! I thought it was for a minute there.
Load More Replies...What an actor jd is i love these films great actor in them along with esward scissorhand and benny and june
It’s also a great way to immortalize all the work that went into smaller details that, perhaps, most viewers never even notice. Films like “Blade Runner,” or even, more recently, “Barbie” had hours and hours of work put into sets and costumes, some of which are only on screen for seconds. Without them, the film might seem less rich, but the sad truth is that most viewers hardly notice.
The Magic Behind Bb-8
That seems like a job that gives you awesome stories to tell your friends, but was probably hell to actually do.
This must have just been to get him to move in a sandy desert. BB-8 is actually a functional remote controlled robot. Seeing how its constructed/operates is really impressive
And here I was thinking that it was actually a robot of some sort being remote controlled. Silly me.
I can't remember where i saw it but they've made an actual functioning bb-8 with no need for a greenscreen side, it's remote controlled
They didn't know it then, but everyone's efforts are completely in vain. Worst executed trilogy in history.
Special Effects Master Douglas Trumbull On The Set Of Blade Runner (1982)
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die."
Check out the Kurt Russell movie Soldier. It's set in the same universe as this and Alien. Kurt's battle record shows he was in those conflicts. Always thought it was a great shout out to this scene and Rutger Hauer
Load More Replies...My dad was the Art Director and salvaged so many things from that. They were tossing things in the trash after filming. He donated a ton of it to the Motion Picture museum in LA
IMHO the special effects still hold up against current movies
The entry scene where you fly over the city gave me a very gloomy feeling about our future.
John Belushi, Carrie Fisher And Dan Aykroyd On The Set Of The Blues Brothers, 1980

i feel like if tom cruise and david miscavige did a face/off, they would still look like the same person to me.
Load More Replies...That they could do this in the 90's makes me wonder why there are still so many questionable wax figures.
Imagine those poor special effects folks who had to analyse John Travola's body hair in such detail that they could accurately replicate for film... I'd be scarred for life! Imagine being like "yeah, I know what John Travola's chest hair looks so well I could replicate every minute wave and whorl and cowlick". Yikes.
Chris Evans On The Set Of Captain America Wearing Rubber Shoes Made To Look Like Bare Feet
I wouldn't walk anywhere barefoot outside except on a maintained, sandy beach.
Load More Replies...Those do NOT look like bare feet at ALL. If only they coulda found some bare feet for reference.
Fun fact, when I was a hobbit child extra on Lord of the Rings we had to wear rubber feet with hair on them. They were really weird and we got in trouble if they ripped or got damaged, cos they were $200 each, and made to fit our feet. The way they bounced when you walked was super uncanny. I was the hobbit girl in the middle of the hobbit kids at the beginning when gandalf is coming in riding in a cart with frodo. I had pigtails and was wearing a blue dress, and jumping up and down with weird stiff outurned hands. To be fair I was only like 6. My best friend at the time was the boy on the far left with curly white blonde hair, named Robin. He was the only one with hair that was curly enough that he didn't need to wear a wig!
Looks like some killer who put on the skin of his victim 🙈

Robert Shaw & Bruce Taking A Break
I think the bit where Quint is eaten is the most amazing scene as that big lumbering so fake malfunctioning shark wouldn't convince you of anything but he makes you believe it. It's so hard to watch because his acting is so phenomenal

Jim Carrey’s Makeup Transformation In The Mask (1994)
I couldn't do movies that required you to sit in a makeup chair for 8 hours a day. Even Jim Carrey had to hire a CIA torture expert to teach him techniques to withstand the makeup torture.
I always wondered, what did they talk about during all the hours it took to put the makeup on.
Gal Gadot Standing In Moulds For Her Wonder Woman Boots
these boots... I’ve been bitching to myself all the movie about the height of her heels...

Heath Ledger And Ang Lee On The Set Of Brokeback Mountain (2005)
This movie was so f****d up for me. The year this was shot was the year gay marriage was legalized in Canada. However, this was shot in Southern Alberta (where I was born) and the AB govt vowed "Not in Alberta it isn't"... The movie was shot in the Fort Macleod region, near Cardston, AB. One of the most homophobic and unsafe-to-be-gay regions in North America. I speak from personal experience. Such a wonderful message crafted in the midst of endless hatred and abuse
I still remember getting up one morning as a teenager and my sister telling me "Heath Ledger died". I just stared at her like what the hell are you talking about? He can't be dead! But he was...
I like that movie but I can’t watch it again, the ending’s too sad.
I'm not a romantic drama movie person but this one is worth watching.

There's the guy we always forget about: the one holding the camera doing the same as the actor he's following. Cheers to all cameramen and women!

Aliens - Setting Up The Shot (1986)
Jenette Goldstein. Just incredible that she could play a part like this as well as one like the soft-spoken Irish mother comforting her children in Titanic.
One of these days, I have to see the Alien movies.
Try to get the extended versions, in Aliens especially. It adds so much more to it and explains Ripley's reactions

The Cast Of ‘Barbie’
Having not seen the movie, is it a satire about overly beautiful plastic people?
It's actually quite a deep film, even though it looks shallow and silly. Looks into identity, purpose, the patriarchy, etc. While still also being lots of fun. Very odd and fantastic film.

Load More Replies...The producer outright tortured her. He harassed her on set, interrupted her when resting and didn't tell her about planned scenes and stunts that would frighten and shock her. She lost an unhealthy amount of weight and had a nervous breakdown because of this. He wanted her acting to look more realistic that way. But sadly her exhaustion and fear did indeed show, but people don't expect realistic behaviour in movies so they felt she was holding back and just a bad actress, which had a severe and negative impact on her career. If you know what happened and watch the movie again, you see it, but otherwise you just feel that something's off and she's acting strangely and assume it's lack of talent

My favorite of his that I've seen was Shoot 'Em Up. I laughed a lot at the dark comedy but it was also fairly decent as an action film.

Arnie With Director Paul Verhoeven On Set Of Total Recall
Verhoeven has made many good films, such as Keetje Tippel, Spetters, Soldier of Orange, Turkish Delight and Flesh and Blood. He then took a sharp right turn and made Robocop/Total Recall/Basic Instinct/Showgirls.
While not great, I am fond of RoboCop - especially Peter Weller's performance. "Showgirls" was much more than a sharp right turn - imho.

BRING BACK THE LINK TO SEE THE COMPLETE LIST. I'm gonna be posting this comment on every shortened list, BP. And I encourage y'all do the same. Unless someone knows a more efficient less annoying way to let these people know
Thanks, BP for shortening this to a reasonable number, why did you have it so many to start with. All the comments from #51-150 are GONE forever. Next time start with 50 and do three postings.
I’ve been in the film industry for over 30 years and have hundreds of behind the scenes photos I need to organize… tons of Makeup continuity pictures on Polaroid. These make me miss work so much. We’ve been shut down due to the strike for 4 months and I miss being on set making magic happen 😞
