More than 76 million people across the Sahel and greater Horn of Africa regions are experiencing extreme hunger, making them increasingly vulnerable to health risks. The impact of the climate crisis has led to drought and flooding across the regions, and people living in poorer and marginalized communities in these areas feel the impact most acutely, with so many of these communities dependent on agriculture and pastoralism for their livelihoods. In Somalia, an estimated 43,000 excess deaths occurred due to the deepening drought, with half of these deaths occurring among children under the age of 5.
 
Children growing up in the Sahel and greater Horn of Africa are facing significant challenges, missing out on critical educational opportunities, limiting them from reaching their full potential. The African continent offers the highest percentage of entrepreneurs in the world amongst working-age adults, but instead of shaping their futures, millions of young people are displaced, facing extreme hunger and risk of disease.
 
WHO is working to strengthen health worker capacity in these regions to help prevent the spread of disease, provide essential medicines and emergency nutrition, vaccinations, and set up mobile health centres for people forced to leave their homes."

This healthcare emergency has been exacerbated by climate change, with a lack of rainfall and extreme droughts leading to widespread damage to crops and livestock in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. Meanwhile, severe flooding is devastating regions like South Sudan and Sudan, causing destruction of homes, infrastructure, and pasture. Millions are in a vulnerable position and being forced to leave their homes to look for food and clean water. WHO estimates that nearly 12 million children will face acute malnutrition and the risk of disease outbreaks including cholera, malaria, measles, and COVID-19 is increasing. Life-saving medical supplies, vaccines, and equipment are urgently required. WHO is working on the ground to increase the capacity of health workers, prevent the spread of disease, and provide medical supplies, essential care, and emergency nutrition for people forced to leave their homes."

Decontamination is an essential step in controlling an #Ebola outbreak. Transmitted by bodily fluids, the virus must be destroyed wherever a confirmed patient has passed.
