They say revenge is best served cold, but it’s also best served by someone who knows us very well. And who knows us better than our beloved fur babies?
We love our pets unconditionally and work hard to give them the best lives possible, spoiling them with delicious treats, long walks and the most comfortable beds. But just like any child who’s been denied dessert or bitter ex-romantic partner, our pets are capable of plotting devious acts of revenge upon us. From destroying furniture to going potty where they know they shouldn’t, we’ve gathered some of the coldest examples of animal revenge down below, as well as an interview with Dr. Megan E. Maxwell, PhD, a Board Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist .

My Ozzie, RIP, had digestive problems. I covered living room carpet with newspaper when I was at work. Get a box of newspaper close by. I had gathered paper and was throwing it away when I heard paper rattle. He pulled newspaper from the box and did his business. No only paper trained, he got his own! (Sometimes he just couldn't make it all the way to the litter box.)

When my dog was a puppy he ripped open a brand new, full 50lb bag of tidy cat litter while I was at work. I came home to find cat litter EVERYWHERE. And of course my 3 cats decided to use it where it lay.

My mother used to get up very early for work and do her makeup in the peace before the kids got up. Somehow, she got on the wrong side of the cat. During her peaceful time, the cat would come barreling out of the back of the house, jump into the beanbag chair, and pee (while glaring at mom), then jump down and barrel back again. Every morning.

I had a cat who was that smart. She did that with the cat litter bag, and if she was hungry, sometimes she'd park herself in the cat food bag. It didn't matter if she had food in her bowl!

If you have cats, the best formula for litter boxes is N+1 = Number of litter boxes where N = number of cats. And all in an easily accessible location for the cats. Serves you right.

Once when I was a fairly new cat owner (had taken in a feral kitten, after which many weeks passed before we managed to bond), I neglected to empty the litter box in a timely fashion. So Selkie began blaring at me and found the bag of cat litter and began clawing at it, looking at me pointedly until I got the hint.

Who still uses "litter" for their cat(s)? Use the scoopable SAND that traps the urine & neutralize the poop/urine odor. Use "kitty litter" to clean up motor oil spills.

If you’re a pet owner, you likely know that our furry (or scaly, feathery, etc.) friends can be extremely smart. They learn how to communicate with us without using words, and we find ways to understand one another’s emotions. But this intelligence can come back to bite us when our pets realize that we don’t always give them what they want. Sure, accidents happen, and especially when pets are young, they have a lot to learn. But the hilarious photos on this list seem to be a bit more like calculated revenge than honest mistakes.
To gain more insight on our naught pets and whether or not their actions that we perceive as revenge are intentional, we reached out to Board Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist Dr. Megan E. Maxwell, PhD. While this article is all in good fun, we wanted to know if our pets are actually capable of plotting revenge against us (and if they are, should we be worried?).

Lucky for all of us, Dr. Maxwell told Bored Panda that no, animals don’t consciously seek revenge. “To really carry out vengeful behavior, you need to be able to picture the future and find pleasure in the future misery or suffering of others,” she explained. “For our pets, this is much too complicated. Nonetheless, we see behavior from our pets all the time that LOOKS like revenge, but this is only because we humans put our own motivations onto pet behavior sometimes.” We shouldn’t be projecting our own emotions onto others, so let’s not do it on our pets either!
Dr. Maxwell also provided some possible explanations for why our animals might seem vengeful. “Most dogs and cats engage in destruction in the house either due to boredom and the natural enjoyment that comes from chewing things, or due to anxiety either from being home alone or from any changes that may have occurred in the pet's life that cause stress,” she noted.

To try to prevent our pets from seeking revenge (or appearing like that’s what they’re after), Dr. Maxwell provided some advice. “We should teach our pets how to be home alone calmly, and be sure to provide plenty of appropriate things for our pets to destroy to meet their chewing needs.” She also recommended trying to get to the bottom of why they are displaying destructive behavior, because it’s not actually to seek revenge. “For example, be sure all of the pet's basic needs are met, including plenty of exercise, enrichment, basic training, and socialization,” Dr. Maxwell told Bored Panda.

I would not bathe a full grown cat. Because I want to live. Seriously, I just had a cat that had surgery and had to wear a cone collar for over a week. He couldn't clean his butt and the best I could do was use wipes, which were not very effective. But he made it clear the one time that I dragged him to the bathtub that it just wasn't going to happen!

Thankfully, our dogs and cats aren’t as vengeful as humans often are, but they are intelligent enough to feel other emotions that might lead to them partaking in destructive behavior, including jealousy. Paul Morris, PhD, a psychologist and animal behavior expert at The University of Portsmouth in England found that dogs will consistently push in between themselves and their “rivals” to compete for attention. “All we can do is look at behavior and context,” Dr. Morris says. “Both the behavior and the contexts observed are consistent with current scientific definitions of jealousy. I suspect that a highly social species such as the dog has a very developed repertoire of social emotions.”

Our cat follows me around when I am at home. My wife is at home all day, every day. If I go out to do work in the garden - cat; making the bed - cat; preparing/cooking food - cat; on this pc..... cat. If I go talk to my wife, the cat gets jealous and starts bumping me and talking to me. When I come home from work, she is patiently waiting for me. She ignores my wife most of the time.
If you’re wondering why your dog might be acting a bit off, it can be useful to be able to spot the signs of jealousy in your fur baby. They might start displaying signs of aggression towards whomever they’re jealous of, display attention seeking behavior, start sulking or even withdraw from you. If you notice this behavior in your pet and it’s unusual, your animal might be feeling insecure. To combat these negative feelings, it can be helpful to maintain routines for your dog. “Think back to what your schedule and habits were like before the new pet or person was introduced, and, whenever possible, try to reestablish that pattern,” The Dog Daily writes.

If an animal is jealous, they might just need some extra love and affection to remind them how much you care. Give them an extra treat, take them to the park more often, and spend plenty of time playing with them. Just like humans, dogs need to be shown they are loved sometimes. It can also be useful to reinforce your dog’s basic training if their jealousy is turning into destructive patterns. “You must remain the leader, so gently show your dog who is boss by verbally scolding negative behavior as soon as it starts,” The Dog Daily says. “At the same time, reward positive behavior with sweet talk, head rubs, and treats, especially if your dog makes an effort to socialize with your new pack member.”

For example, separation anxiety can be a cause for some of the behavior featured on this list. “Factors which can precipitate a separation anxiety problem include a change in the family’s schedule which result in the dog being left alone more often, a move to a new house, the death or loss of another family pet, or a period at a boarding kennel,” MSPCA explains on their site. “Separation anxiety may manifest by excessive vocalizations or house-soiling, along with destructive behavior. These behaviors are not motivated by spite or revenge, but by anxiety, and punishment will make the problem worse!”

JUST A PSA!!!! PLEASE, IF YOUR CAT IS SCRATCHING CHAIRS OR TEARING TOILET PAPER, DO *NOT* DECLAW IT. DECLAWING IS LIKE REMOVING A HUMAN'S FINGER. CLAWS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CAT. INSTEAD OF DECLAWING, YOU CAN EITHER: clip their nails every so often, buy it a scratching post and teach it to use it, or buy/make some cat-repellent(certain smells deterr cats)

Some of these I feel like the parents are not training very well. Others might have medical issues like anxiety disorders, you can actually med cats and dogs on ani depression anxiety meds. Maybe kennel training with some? I love the hell out of my doggo and cat, the only time they acted out is when I was giving birth to my son. Soon after I found my cat has separation anxiety. So if I have to leave he gets his "thunder vest" it's a weighted vest and he hasn't had an episode since. Other than that some of these are down right cute. Thank you BP for avoiding the AITA.

If your cats chew on recharger cords - or any cords - rub the cords with lemon juice. Cats hate the smell of citrus. Beer works, too.

No. I had that notion too before I became a cat owner. Our cat is a sweetheart. When we feed him past his breakfast/dinner time, all he does is meow and stares at us. He doesn't destroy anything and rips open food bags. He's super chill.

PSA: idc about the magpies but remember to keep your cats indoors. They are house pets. Not wild animals. They will absolutely murk the local bird population and have caused a ton of extinctions. Fix and keep that damn thing in the house. I love cats but seriously. If they're so un-enriched they need to go outside, that's an owner's issue. Get a cat tent, idk. Just stop letting cats roam the streets. Getting hit by cars and ate by a lynx or coyote or poisoned is also natural by that view point.

My kids had the meanest cat I've ever seen. He had a habit of sneaking up behind you while you were standing up taking a leak, and sink his claws into the back of your thighs. And they objected when I said I'd only come feed the cat while they were gone if I could bring a can of mace. "You want to MACE our cat??!" Oh, yeah.

I can’t believe this quote from someone who is so behind the times in understanding animals: “To really carry out vengeful behavior, you need to be able to picture the future and find pleasure in the future misery or suffering of others,” she explained.“ More and more scientific research is showing many, many species other than ourselves can understand exactly this sort of stuff, and for every day living, too, not just for revenge!

Friendly reminder that if your cat/dog acts up when you leave the house/are late home they might have separation anxiety which would need addressing for their health and welfare (and your wallet!)

A lot of these cats are probably acting out from boredom. Cats need exercise and stimulation everyday, especially when they’re young. Otherwise they misbehave or overeat. These cats need climbers, toys, companions, and owners willing to give them individual, undivided attention everyday. Cats get blamed for bad behavior when often it’s really because the owner’s ignoring their needs.

JUST A PSA!!!! PLEASE, IF YOUR CAT IS SCRATCHING CHAIRS OR TEARING TOILET PAPER, DO *NOT* DECLAW IT. DECLAWING IS LIKE REMOVING A HUMAN'S FINGER. CLAWS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CAT. INSTEAD OF DECLAWING, YOU CAN EITHER: clip their nails every so often, buy it a scratching post and teach it to use it, or buy/make some cat-repellent(certain smells deterr cats)

Some of these I feel like the parents are not training very well. Others might have medical issues like anxiety disorders, you can actually med cats and dogs on ani depression anxiety meds. Maybe kennel training with some? I love the hell out of my doggo and cat, the only time they acted out is when I was giving birth to my son. Soon after I found my cat has separation anxiety. So if I have to leave he gets his "thunder vest" it's a weighted vest and he hasn't had an episode since. Other than that some of these are down right cute. Thank you BP for avoiding the AITA.

If your cats chew on recharger cords - or any cords - rub the cords with lemon juice. Cats hate the smell of citrus. Beer works, too.

No. I had that notion too before I became a cat owner. Our cat is a sweetheart. When we feed him past his breakfast/dinner time, all he does is meow and stares at us. He doesn't destroy anything and rips open food bags. He's super chill.
