Garage sales, flea markets, pawn shops, all of these places are playgrounds for bargain hunters. One day, they discover a retro windbreaker that looks like it just stepped out of an '80s magazine, the next, a weirdly adorable ceramic cat mug that somehow survived without breaking. On the subreddit r/ThriftStoreHauls, members eagerly share their finds, swapping stories, snapping photos, and celebrating the thrill of scoring something unique for next to nothing. Their posts make you want to grab a tote bag and start thrifting too.

He's wonderful.. Yet, as usual, no one seems to know that beavers' teeth are orange, not white.
Just like the members of this subreddit, celebrities also love thrifting.
From singers who love to perform in vintage (SZA) to actors who rewear their favorite gowns on the red carpet (Winona Ryder) and celebrities who exclusively shop vintage while traveling (Helen Mirren), a lot of stars have spoken openly about their love for thrifting.
Found This Today At Goodwill. I Love It!!!🥰
8 Years Ago I Posted These 1930’s Salvatore Ferragamo Shoes (On My Old Account) That I Found For $8 At Savers. Today, They Are Being Shipped To The Museum In Italy!
I suspect I might too, if only they were in a UK size 10. 🤣
Load More Replies...That's amazing, and thank you for helping to preserve history! I love museums, big props to ones that don't steal important cultural items!
Savers, or Value Village in Canada, the managers absolutely suck at flagging vintage pieces if they're obscure enough to not be super well-known, such as an old Hudson Bay blanket. That stuff is usually priced gouged and reserved for their "showcase". Some of their pieces in "showcase" are not that special nor valuable at all. I've learned not to rely on that, and I've observed a lot of the resellers don't bother with that area, either.
Boyfriend Was Not Impressed With These Kjaernulf Chairs I Thrifted For €175
And it's not just Hollywood. Thrifting is shifting from a niche hobby to a mainstream activity in other places, too.
For example, according to the 2024 Thrift Report from Value Village (the largest for-profit thrift operator in Canada for value-priced pre-owned clothing, accessories, and housewares), 90 percent of Canadian consumers have engaged with a thrift store through shopping, donating, or both (up from 83 percent in 2022); nearly one in three have thrifted in the past year alone, and more than 40 percent of Gen Z are regular thrifters.

Two cats, but only one throne. Looks like there could be trouble brewing...
In different countries the numbers might also be different, but the aforementioned Canadian report also discovered that despite all the apps popping up, in-person thrift stores are still very important. Canucks claim to spend 6.8 times more at brick-and-mortar thrift stores compared to online resale. Eighty-three cents of every dollar they spend on pre-owned apparel is spent in-store.

$15 Black Tie Find From Goodwill
LOL, I wore that exact same dress as a bridesmaid. And I gave it to Goodwill. 🤣 I'm a bit bigger so that can't be mine, but it could be from a fellow bridesmaid. All 3 of the bridesmaid dresses I wore for different weddings got donated. Such a waste of fabric.
that's basically what I wanted as a wedding dress at 17, only with reverse colors🤩
Also, more than 3 in 10 respondents said that secondhand clothing makes up more than a quarter of their wardrobe, and nearly 40 percent of thrifters purchase secondhand clothing at least once per month.
Gen Z relies on secondhand clothing even more – 6 in 10 said over a quarter of their wardrobe is secondhand.

Single-Handedly The Coolest Thing I’ve Ever Found At A Thrift Store
At the thrift store I found an artwork of a peacock made of real butterflies, I paid 7€
I have always wanted to know what happened to the butterflies my great uncle preserved when he was stationed in Darwin during WWII. I have a photo of some of them but that's all.
But regardless of where you are, giving clothes (and other things) a second life, is also contributing to saving the planet.
It is estimated that the equivalent of one garbage truck full of textiles is landfilled or incinerated every second.
Furthermore, the fashion industry is considered to be responsible for 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions—that’s more emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. If the fashion sector continues on its current trajectory, that share of the carbon budget could jump to 26% by 2050.

This, My Friends, Is Why I Drive 45 Minutes To The Rich People Goodwill
I had one of those and ended up dumping it on our hard waste collection because it was so useless (for what I needed it to do. Maybe it was better for someone else). I bought into the Dyson hype. My Miele s**ts all over the Dyson.
My Dyson Animal upright is over 15 years and the best thing I ever bought. I also have the one n the picture for 8 years and love it.

I must live near the poor people's Goodwill because mine is hard to distinguish from a garbage dump, including the content and the smell. They used to have a separate store nearby where they sold all the "good" stuff at exorbitant prices, but that went out of business.

If you have kids (or even if you don't) I strongly recommend his books. My favorite was The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. They especially great for slightly older kids who know the original fairy tales
I think we read that in primary school. We definitely had to write our own versions of the three little pig. I remember because my teacher loved that I wrote that the other pigs couldn't live in the straw house because they had hayfever!

Found These Babies Several Weeks Ago 😬
A lot of thifted items come from house clearance sales after someone dìes, and lots of knick-knacks and ornaments etc just get put in the 'donate' pile.
Load More Replies...FROM THE ORIGINAL POST - I was able to unscrew the bottom parts of the urns and found the company who helped these pups pass, as well as the owner's last name and the dates of the pets' passing. It turned out to be a mix up of donation/packing boxes as the owners were moving away. Got them reunited with one day to spare before they left the state 💪
That happens a lot. We get people calling our thrift store almost every week asking if we've seen their mistaken donation they want back.

I donate my no longer used handbags to charity (designer and otherwise. If it's not being used, it'll go when I have a ruthless purge). I like to think that they find people like this that appreciate them, as opposed to resellers, though not sure how good my chances are. I need to clean out my cupboards again... anyone want handbags? 😆
One thing that really annoys me is rich people going to charity shops buying up cheap stuff, when we donate it to help poor people, not rich people.
Thrift shops aren't just about helping poor people, they're also very much about helping the environment. We are destroying the earth with how much stuff we produce, throwing stuff away when someone else could use it, means wasting more resources and creating bigger landfills. Many people donate mainly to help the environment, in which case it doesn't matter how rich the new owner is. And people also donate because it's a beautiful object that could make someone else happy, and for that it also doesn't matter if the new owner is poor or not.
