I agree, too many times people feel entitled due to their age. You don't owe anyone anything. Congrats on the souvenir and the story you will be able to tell your friends and family.

Sometimes, we're discouraged from expressing our unpopular opinions because of the adverse reactions we might get from the people around us. Whether we’re talking about politics, religion, or popular culture, sharing our deepest beliefs can make someone feel pretty irritated.

However, while some end up scratching their heads from confusion, others see a like-minded person and gladly show their support in heated discussions. After all, a controversial point of view does not instantly mean that it’s uncommon. When you push your fears of being the odd one to the side, it’s much likely you'll encounter others sharing the same thoughts as you.

Brandwatch, a digital consumer intelligence company, was on a mission to investigate the most popular unpopular opinions on social media. They looked at consumers’ mentions from January 1 to June 30, 2020, excluding news, retweets, and shares. Results showed that 1.6M people shared their controversial beliefs in this period. Also, there were 34% more mentions during the lockdown compared to the four months prior.

Greed and narcissism... it's sad, but it's human nature. The majority of the people out there are fake as heck, and will do things like posting videos of themselves crying on the internet as PR moves, to help promote and enhance their brands, to help them gain those clicks, likes, follows, and subscribes. Even more sad is that there ARE the odd few out there who honestly have no one and no where else to turn to, and are using the internet to reach out. But those odd genuine few are usually buried and overshadowed by all the loud popular influencers out there, with their TikToks and viral videos and their memes.

Harassment is the right word. What happened to Diana and other famous people with the paparazzi actually haunting them, spying and giving no Fu*ks. But here's a thought: Who the hell buys those rag mag's is an accomplice bc if they stop buying that filth then the paparazzi will (nearly) go away or at least be way less.

Speaking as someone who was out on their ass at 18... basic parenting, including food, clothing, and sleeping indoors.... isn't nothing. Not when you consider what it's like to do without any of those.

When it comes to the topics people touch on, the top ones were about characters in pop culture, TV shows, dislike of fandoms, and books. People shared their complaints about some of the bestsellers of the century and aired their grievances about how some shows have become outdated. For example, 34K mentions called out Friends "for being hugely popular, despite some aspects not being acceptable today."

The researchers also looked into Reddit, where 958K users shared their gripes. "It seems like lockdown got to Reddit users, too. Posts to r/UnpopularOpinions increased 105%." They found that many of these mentions touched on things that happened on the platform itself. Most of them were focused on sports players, subreddits, and seeing change as not being good.

So while it can be fun to share your controversial views online, they also let others say opposing views, have heated discussions, and see things from different perspectives. Anna Akbari, P.hD., is a sociologist, writer, and speaker who shared her thoughts on why unpopularity isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a piece on The Psychology Today

She explained that if we want to be happy, successful, and feel of service, we don’t actually need to appeal to the masses. "See, we’re complicated beings, each with our own unique experiences, full of biases and contradictions and, hopefully, a point of view," she wrote. "Having a point of view is a good thing, even when that view isn’t universally embraced."

You ruined it with "sure they're cute" because that's the whole point, they're NOT cute, people have just been trained into thinking they are. People need to realise that inbred dogs with serious health problems are the exact opposite of cute.

100% - the cheater is the one at fault - unless the people they cheated with is also someone who you have a relationship with then it's equal blame as they both owe you loyalty. I've never understood the blame being passed to the person they cheat with, and it's usually women who blame the other woman when their guy cheats - I sure there's a patriarchal link to all that that could be deciphered but seriously, they're just a shitty person if they knew he was involved with someone - if they didn't then they're just as much a victim in it all. This idea that men can't help themselves if offered sex has to stop - you don't accidentally have sex - yeah, you may regret it after but you totally know what you're doing while you're doing it.

While we can wholeheartedly stand by one issue, we can also not see eye to eye on another. "Agreeing to disagree on most things in life is fine—assuming it doesn’t restrict the liberty or human rights of others. It’s when we start to think that we need to agree on everything all the time to merely function together that we get into trouble," Akbari mentioned.

Needless to say, popularity isn’t essentially bad. Lots of things that are commonly and generally accepted by our society are considered as "safe". Akbari explained that we don’t have to immediately or categorically reject the popular stuff but rather "selectively embrace it, or at least occasionally challenge it."

Yes, it really should be free. I have been in therapy on and off for years and it has been free (/paid by taxes). It's due to mental health issues so free healthcare = free mental healthcare. I learned a lot and cope much better. I wish it was available to all who needs it. To hear that people live with anxiety, ptsd, depression etc and can't afford therapy to learn how to cope better is really, REALLY sad.

However, if your views are not clinging to the mainstream popular or if they tend to stir some unexpected or even rude reactions, "don't despair. You don’t need to bend toward conformity, and you may even be able to cash in—financially and socially—on stepping outside the conventional bounds."

She mentioned two rules that people who tend to lean into unpopularity should remember. The first one is that you should actually believe what you’re saying or doing. "Disagreeing for the sport of it is annoying and, rightfully, no one likes or respects you if you do that. So stop it," the sociologist advised.

Retired teacher here, so let me weigh in on the realities. For elementary school kids, I'd overwhelmingly vote yes. Younger kids want to please the teacher; they want to be around the teacher, around other kids, in class. HOWEVER, as someone who taught middle and high school for 26 years, this does not work at all. By that time, there are a lot of kids who are looking for any way to leave the classroom. Yes, there are times they need to use the bathroom, but quite often they also want to socialize. There have been groups in certain years (not all by any means) that texted and met up in bathrooms and fought, too. It helps if a teacher has a sign in/out pass, or gives a certain number of tickets per month. Other children who don't have to use the bathroom COULD give a classmate a ticket if they felt generous.

"The second rule is to embrace your unpopular opinions with the knowledge and grace that not everyone shares your point of view," she continued. This rule can be quite tough since we humans have a general tendency to want others to agree with us. After all, it makes us feel heard and valued.

However, following this guideline "starts with a promise to both give up convincing other people to buy into your less popular opinions and to stop shaming them for their own thoughts and actions."

My previous boss (who was an absolute jerk!) used to say "there's a line of people waiting to take your place, if you quit." I did quite eventually. Seven years later and... my place is still unoccupied. And not just mine - two other people also quit from that office, and replacements could never be found. Or someone would start and then quit a month later due to the conditions. I guess the line of people for my spot turned out to be a bit too short ;)

We have to get rid of the phrase "unskilled labour". A janitor needs practical skills far above average (at least a good one does), and the working conditions of courier drivers or fastfood workers require a great deal of stamina and resilience. In any job you can go from beginner to master, working your job better or faster. Even more important, the economy absolutely depends on the jobs we tend to call "unskilled". Usually, in any company, if a middle manager is absent for some days, work continues more or less as usual. If the cleaning lady is absent, you notice the problems after a day or two the latest.

After that, it’s all about trusting yourself. If you believe that some things are just not right, don’t be shy and share your views with others because, chances are, there are people out there just like you. According to Akbari, there is value in dissent. "There’s often truth at the fringes and insight in unpopular perspectives. Greatness comes neither from blindly following nor from knee-jerk rejecting."

"Many of our greatest historical figures held really, really unpopular opinions. They did stuff that made people cringe or even retaliate against them. Going against the grain takes guts. And that courage is admirable, even if we disagree with what they’re saying or doing—but only when executed with integrity from a place of personal honesty," she wrote.

I feel like the human approach to "what to do with the waste/recycling of electric vehicles" will (and probably is) treated similar to the problem of what to do with nuclear waste, and unfortunately, our approach seems to be to sweep it under the rug and let future generations figure it out.

Except you're wrong. Current generations are making nuclear waste recyclable. See, nuclear waste isn't a byproduct of nuclear power plants; it's an enriched fuel for them. But because it's been enriched, it has to be handled differently. But we can recycle and recycle the "spent fuel" until it's no longer radioactive, because it's the radioactivity we consume. It's just that concentrating radioactive materials make them shed their radioactivity faster, so it's counter-intuitive. AND YES, I"VE OVERSIMPLIFIED.

Most lithium battery technologies (Li-NMC, Li- FePO4, Li-Co, Li-NCA, Li-To) are potentially 100% recyclable and are currently already partially recycled. The industry is quickly scaling up its recycling capacity: If we consider the US only, this year the recycling volume capacity is going to triple. The recycling process is technologically complex but well understood and environmentally sound, with most of the job done through chemical separation via dissolution and subsequent precipitation of metals, the rest through melting and vaporization at carefully controlled temperatures. An "Unpopular opinion" should not necessarily be a "misinformed opinion".

There's a *huge* difference between 'potentially recyclable' and 'recyclable'. Recycling capability for car batteries is still falling behind sales growth, and without a regulatory framework in place to force manufacturers to take respinsi, the problem will only get worse.

Not true, actually. Making them the norm is 100% guaranteed to provide the funds to develop ways to recycle their very valuable battery materials. It COULD be done now, but the cost doesn't make it worth it. Scale up production, and we'll find a way to recycle them. And in the meanwhile, they are NOT simply thrown in landfills. (Well, I don't know how well that's being regulated or those regulations are being enforced, but at least some portion of them are not.)

Already done. Tesla can reuse the batteries in the grid-scale storage. Redwood is tearing them down and reselling the metals. This is scaling as fast as the car production.

And the solution to that is not having those cars instead of creating the infrastructure? I've heard that argument ("no infrastructure") so often and I always wonder how they thought the world would look if the early cars had been dismissed because "there are not enough gas-stations in the country" Nobody (not even me) is saying to just take all the cars away and exchange them for electric ones. But over (not too long a) time, the old combustion-engine has to be replaced. If we'd started earlier, we'd probably be done by now...

However no one has an issue with the millions of cell phone batteries, laptop batteries, tablet batteries, and other electronic detritus that is adding up to millions of tons of toxic pollution every year. There are effective systems for recycling them. Recycling lead acid, lithium and lithium ion batteries is not new tech. Per an article in wired the biggest obstacle to recycling EV batteries is that there are only a few places that do it right now (not a lot of volume) and the shipping cost of the batteries is extravagant. More EVs on the road, and more batteries would increase the need for recycling facilities, make them more distributed and reduce the largest expense that makes it unprofitable. Additionally the biggest recyclers and manufacturers are still overseas. As demand grows, one can expect US battery manufacturers and recyclers to grow.

While I agree, finding a way to recycle and reuse especially batteries is important (and, hey, no less important than for lead batteries which contribute the bulk of lead back into water supplies now, but I digress), pulling back on fossil fuels is ESSENTIAL right now. Not option. Not inconvenient. Not a nice to have. ESSENTIAL. Unfortunately, by the time privileged folks wake up to that fact, it will be too late to avoid the worst consequences of pretending it wasn't a problem.

The issue with the EV movement is it has become like a cult. They only want to look at the pros, not the cons. Other nations are ensuring the right infrastructure is in place before they put more EVs on the road. They also know that EVs cannot do certain jobs, handle certain weather, or go to remote areas. From what I have read so far, lithium batteries will be obsolete in a few years & new technology batteries will taker over. It's now about making money off of those who feel the need to have an EV now.

It's not just having to recycle them, it's having the infrastructure to handle them. Most power grids are just not up to having 100% electric everything. If we try it now, it'll just lead to widespread blackouts and brownouts, energy rationing, etc. How will that actually help? As for nuclear power, everyone points to disasters like Three Mile Island, which was a non issue since the reactor did exactly what it was supposed to do and the problem was fixing itself. or Chernobyl which was bad design and human screw up start to finish or Fukushima which was just plain bad luck with first the earthquake then the tsunami. The US Navy has been using nuclear power for the last 62 years and not one problem and we have a plan on what to do with the waste already.

The whole earth, and all of the sea bottoms are soon just one enormous waste basket for people with no imagination whatsoever! Take care of the rubbish! Sort out what you can use again, sell it again, and then take care of it again, and again, and again!! Just throwing things away doesn't dispose of it - it just end up somewhre else, and you'll pay for it later! I thought MOST people knew this by now!

I've mentioned this very problem many times to friends and family. I hate government intervention and regulation for the most part. But if they are going to promote EVs then they need to start regulating those batteries like yesterday. The battery packs; in all devices not just EVs, need to be easily recyclable with the pack designed for the cells to be replaced and the pack resold. Then we reclaim what we can from the old cells and make new ones. I don't even think it is hard. Just a design problem I don't think we need new tech at all.

Fair enough. But I made the same argument 15 years ago when I was saying that "Electricity is still produced by coal." However, that is becoming less and less the case - partially because of the increased demand by things like electric cars. So, welcome to the conundrum of a market driven economy. The technology to handle all the waste of will never develop before can be popularized. First you have to get the market sold on the tech, and then drive the innovation to handle the cleanup because it's creating a problem. I'm not advocating this. I think it's stupid. But it's how market economies observably work.

In the 1800 we were afraid future cities would drown in horse manure. Then fossil fuels seemed like a clean solution. Now we know better but we are making the same mistake with electric vehicles. The real solution is to stop supporting an economy that only works if each generation grows exponentially and buys more stuff. It's like a gigantic ponzi scheme.

Which is causing more environmental harm, in both the short term and long term - the battery sitting under your hood right now or the 4.6 metric tons of CO2 coming out of the tailpipe (1 gallon a gas = 19.5 lb of CO2) each year? In 2014 (last year with numbers for both), the US produced 6.87 billion metric tons of CO2. We used 242,697,402 kg or 242, 698 metric tons of batteries. 95% of all electric vehicle car batteries are currently recycled BECAUSE THOSE ELEMENTS ARE IN A BOX YOU CAN RECYCLE while that 4.6 metric tons of CO2 coming out of the tailpipe is just pollution. Although its currently cheaper to mine the lithium for a small consumer battery than recycle it, all those old EV batteries are going to SE Asia on slowboats to recycle because its hard to hide in a landfill and its a waste of money. Like the industry recycling old computers for the gold, platinum, and lithium inside them, the industry for recycling EV batteries is becoming a literal lithium and gold mine.

The problem with solving the recycling before adopting is that if there's no current demand, there's no impetus to solve the recycling. People don't work that way. We seem to need to have the problem in our faces before we really want to act on it. Not saying this is good; it's super bad and stupid, but it's also the way it is.

You should be able to stop at a battery station, like gas stations, and be able to switch out your battery for a fully charged one. The old battery gets recharged for the next person. All vehicles would be required to have universal batteries so people don't get stuck buying certain types.

We also lack an infrastructure to support them. Charging stations for one. Addition stress and supply needed from the substandard power grid being another. Also, EV''s are not the universal solution. An example.is the snow storm earlier this year on the east coast that stranded many in vehicles overnight. If those had been electric vehicles the event would have had a horrible body count due to death from exposure. In the Western US it could potentially be worse.or more common do to distances and the occasional traffic on some roads.

Wrong. The largest car markets generate far more electricity from natural gas than coal (China is the notable exception). Natural gas power plants have about half the carbon emission per kWh as coal fired plants. Electric motors are more than 90% efficient in converting electricity to motive force, while combustion engines are less than 30% efficient. So even if an electric car gets 100% of its electricity from coal (none do), it has a lower mile-for-mile carbon footprint than a gasoline engine.

What I want more is one standard exchangeable battery and mechanism for it. So I can go to a fuel/power station and swap battery in a minute, and drive across the country. Because a hybrid is the worst of both (100% fossil fuel on long trips, cost of both electric and fuel hardware, plus all possible faults of both types), and an hour or two of charging for every hour or two of driving is just not doable for long trips.

If you're not in favour of nuclear energy, you're not serious about the environment, or at least not serious about the masses keeping a decent standard of living. It's not the 1970's any more.
