We can’t stop feasting our eyes on gorgeous and interesting maps, and we know that some of you Pandas can’t either. That’s why we’ve put together another list of the coolest content to come from this subreddit that has a dedicated community of nearly 1.4 million fans.

And while we can’t mention the full name of the subreddit (the internet’s gotten a lot stricter in recent years when it comes to certain words! Gosh darn you, internet censorship!), we can tell you all about the project that was started up way back in 2011 by map lover Patrick McGranaghan. What started out as a labor of love has since grown into a dedicated niche for map geeks the world over.

Patrick, the founder of the subreddit dedicated to maps told Bored Panda about how we can improve our spatial awareness and navigational skills. "The older I get, the more I realize that spatial awareness just comes naturally to some people, and for others, it's a struggle," he said, highlighting that practice and repetition are key to honing this skill.

However, just like spell check can make our grammar skills go numb, so can GPS and easily accessible digital maps harm our ability to orient ourselves. "In a way, reliance on Google Maps has made us dumber. We let the navigation app do all the work for us and don't engage with making the decisions," Patrick said. Be sure to read on for the rest of our latest interview with the subreddit's founder, Patrick, below.

In the mood for some more amazing maps? We know you are! When you’re done upvoting your fave maps in this list, check out Bored Panda’s previous posts about the cartography-loving community here, here, and here.

Try Japan https://www.awesomeinventions.com/japanese-manhole-cover-designs/ And if you want manhole covers as prints, you can google "pirate printers" or "pirate printing"

"If you live in a place with a tall hill or some viewpoint, go up there some time and look around. Try to identify as many landmarks as you can. Notice where they are in relation to each other. Look for new landmarks that you've never noticed before and keep them in mind as you navigate your home town. If there are rivers or other features that cause chokepoints on bridges or highways, memorize all the bridges and where they go. In this way, you'll know the layout of your city and how to get around," Patrick gave us some awesome and practical advice on how to improve our navigation skills.

Bored Panda also had a chat with Patrick about the current Covid-19 situation worldwide. Vaccines are being rolled out, plenty of map-lovers would love to visit the places they've been staring at on their maps for a long time, but is it safe to travel yet? Patrick was very upfront that you have to trust your local medical and scientific experts in these matters.

"I think we all have to take precautions, get vaccinated, and avoid risky behaviors. That said, I think we need to remember that we're fighting to eradicate this disease and get back to a normal state of affairs. I really miss the freedom of travel. We're losing years of potential happiness to the lockdowns and at some point, we need to open up. Those are issues above my pay grade though and I hope it's sooner rather than later," he shared his take on the current climate.

Yet Kamerun became Cameroon (British) and Cameroun (French) in 1916, so it predates that. Also, Turkey was called Turky in Britain as Sami says, even in the 1360s during the times of Chaucer so you cannot dismiss the claims it was drawn in the 1910s.

There are plenty of people out there who feel like everything's been mapped and Patrick's heard this response plenty of times when he's told then that he's a land surveyor and that he makes maps for a living. "People say, 'Hasn't everything been mapped?' The world is constantly changing and accurate spatial data is a fleeting thing. Google Maps certainly gives the impression that everything is mapped, but there is selection and generalization in their data," Patrick pointed out that there's a constant need to map and remap the world.

"Infrastructure is a key thing that we all rely on and don't realize it. The electricity to turn on your lights, the fiber that carries this message, the water that you drink. All those things are traveling to you above and below ground. Construction is constantly happening along this route. Knowing where to safely build is critical."

He continued: "There are other themes that have spatial data too. Municipalities pass zoning and other restrictions all the time. Cities like London have an umbrella of rules about the preservation of old buildings, view-lines, noise nuisances, and other regulations. Making accurate maps is a constant struggle that is going to stay with us for a long time. As more things get built, knowing where these are located is important. Maintain the world's databases of spatial information is the task of the modern map-maker."

It has been reported on widely but what this is really referring to is when Government's make official declarations. However, the UK’s House of Commons HAS officially declared that the persecution of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) counts as genocide. So you are right that this is inaccurate as things stand now.

Though I read this "the US State Department's Office of the Legal Adviser concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove genocide." Not sure what that means in this context - I'm not from the US. Edited for a typo.

During my previous chat with the founder of the subreddit, Patrick, he told me all about what sparked his passion for maps and how amateur cartographers can learn to create better maps. For Patrick, his love of maps started very early on in his life, all thanks to his father.

“I developed my passion for maps very early. My family traveled and moved around a lot. My dad taught me how to read maps and I would help him navigate. I used to flip through our Rand McNally atlas to pass hours traveling across the countryside,” he shared earlier with Bored Panda.

The Romans conquered Scotland several times, but were forced to recall their legions due to political crises in the empire. Scotland had a very lucky escape, especially after one rebellion when the general gave the order to kill every man north of Hadrian's wall (which was well within their power), only to abandon the order when he raced back to Rome to be crowned Emperor.

When I moved back to the states I was able to find a career making maps (as a land surveyor) and I am grateful every day that I can do something that I love,” he shared how his excitement for the project grew from a single powerful idea that simply captivated him.

Patrick was very friendly in sharing some tips and tricks on how we can all make our maps look better. For instance, he drew attention to the fact that plenty of amateurs have great ideas, are overflowing with creativity, but their execution needs a bit of work. That way, the maps can end up looking gorgeous and less “hasty and skeletal.”

"It is not that they are bad, it's just that they don't know that they can make their maps so much better. I'm talking about things like fonts and information boxes, detail and vicinity maps, adding gradients to water features, thoughtful color choices, shadows behind place markers. The subtleties are what make maps exquisite," the founder of the subreddit explained.

"The best way to learn how to do these things is to look at lots of maps and see how other cartographers solve these problems. Imitate the masters. Read a few books on cartography and design. Some of the books that influenced me are 'Info We Trust' by RJ Andrews, 'Cartography' by Kenneth Field, and 'Things Maps Don't Tell Us' by Armin Lobeck. If you can integrate the ideas in these books you'll be a league above the average amateur cartographer."

Earlier, Patrick shared that he plans to start traveling again once the Covid-19 pandemic dies down a bit. On his bucket list is a trip to the Baltics, specifically, to the Soviet map store in Latvia.

I used to live in Luxembourg. One of the golf courses was on the border of Luxembourg and Belgium. You would tee off on the forth tee and land in Belgium. On the sixth you would go the opposite way. Always thought that was neat.

Just yesterday I was googling all the different Prague's in the world (I come from the "original" one) thanks to another BP article and I remember there's one in Oklahoma and Nebraska (and a few smaller ones elsewhere too). The Nebraska one was clearly the most proud of its heritage with streets like Moravia (historic part of CZ) avenue and Pribram (CZ town) avenue and the Czechland lake. So I'm not surprised by this and it's a heartwarming feeling that those people who founded the town missed their country and wanted to remember it and now their children are still proud of that connection.

The map was supposedly made in 1932, and yet that image looks like the coastal guns that infamously pointed south (the Japanese infantry cycled in from the north from Johore) during the Battle of Singapore, 1942. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Singapore

In a way yes, in a way no. Iceland is literally overrun by tourists. And since most tourists seek to "do it like the locals", the share per capita says a lot about what to expect. Moreover, a society can only accept so and so many tourists until it gets annoying.

I think they are distinguishing between 'claimed by' and widely 'settled by'. There were only a few hundred Russians in all of western America, for example. And I believe there had been a native rebellion in the north of of the Spanish territories which had effectively ended their rule, even if they still claimed it. Although my grasp on this period of American history is shaky at best and basically down to one documentary I watched.

This applies to nouns only. Obviously, there are gendered pronouns in English.

Yes, whereas Finnish for example doesn't. We call everyone with the same pronoun, and actually in spoken language we call also people "it" :D.

To anyone confused: in linguistics, gender refers to how speech changes around nouns in particular categories. In English, we say "a/an" and "the" for any noun, whether it be "the man" or "the woman". Likewise, we say, for example, "yellow" for everything that is yellow. So we are ungendered. In a gendered language, words change around the assigned "gender" of a noun. Spanish as an example. "The" and "a/an" have different forms based on gender - a man is el (the) or un (a/an) whereas a female is la (the) or una (a/an). Likewise, a "male" object, like a book, is amarillO (yellow), whereas a "female" object, like a table, is amarillA (yellow). It actually has nothing to do with pronouns.

Czech also makes an interesting grammatical difference between inanimate and animate masculin nouns. But in feminine words it doesn't matter. I always found that curious :).

Average elevation is the worst possible way to show the topography of the different countries, as geology doesn't care about borders. It would be better to show a topographic or bathymetric map of Europe.

Here's a lesser known curiosity: Czech and Slovak and very similar languages. Slovak's months are easily understandable in English (Január, Jún, Oktober, etc.) but Czech months are named after things connected with that time of the year (Ice, melting ice, new growth, oak tree, etc.)

In 1494, Portugal and Spain divided the world for possession of future newly dicovered land outside Europe. It was the Treaty of Tordesillas. Brasil was "discovered" by the Portuguese in 1500 and this straight line was the border between the Portuguese and Spanish empires defined by the 1494 treaty.

This would be because of the treaty of Tordesillas, with which the Pope granted new territory to the right of a line drawn through the Atlantic Ocean to Portugal, with new territory to the left going to Spain. Not enough of South America had been discovered yet to know that this line went straight through the continent, hence why Brazil could become a Portuguese colony.

Currently living in Texas, I'll just note the following: a) the decision to have their own grid was made in the 1930s, ie not by anyone currently voting; b) the decision not to winterize the grid against all good advice was made 10 years ago, by the Republican party; c) Texas is a massively voter-suppressed state and even so comes very close to voting Democrat, so without that suppression and cheating we wouldn't have Republican leaders; d) without Republican "leadership" we wouldn't have half the problems we currently have; e) gloating over the really bad situations foisted on people who can't change things (see above re voter suppression) is kinda dickish.

Sweden has a bigger surface area than Germany so it's really a giant country (in European standards) but Germany has about 8 times as many people, so Sweden is really, really empty. Because how long it is, driving from south to north is about as long as from Los Angeles to Seattle. That ride would take you from coastlands, through plains and moorlands, decidous forests, mix forests, pine forests, highlands, pine forests, a lot fo pine forests, did I mention pine forests, arctic moorlands, arctic mountain ranges and finally arctic tundra.

At the beginning of 2020, this involved almost 144,000 people, which corresponds to 23% of the total number of foreigners. Ah, yes, fasting time. If the fasting hours becomes insanely long, we use either of two : Using Meccan/Medinan time or following time of your origin place (if you are no native in the said place). But I know some folks who legit fasted to 21 hours, even more. Some are just, like, as long as there is sunset imma follow it. My cousin in Rostock, I heard, fasted for 18-20 hours and they have been there for a couple of years. I assume it is not that hard for them, either that or they have been used to it.

except 1), that is a false claim not supported by anything, in fact the Islamic rulers at the time had their sites on France and England, as well as tried and failed to conquer Italy. 2) they did and were defeated in a series of battles and thrown back as the European Reconquest began to expel the Arab and Moorish invaders.

Uta is actually from Ute the tribe there, not Yudah. And Oklahoma is a Chickasaw word meaning "Land of the Redskin". When they became a state and had the name changed from Indian Territory the tribes of the Chickasaw, Choctoaw, Osage, and Creek lobbied for that name

True fact: Idaho is a made up name. It's NOT a Nez Perce name Iroquois (which I thought were back east more). Nez Perce had a very large range into Oregon and the panhandle. Anyhow, made up name. Quote: The name Idaho can be traced back to a man named George Willing, a white man and not a Native American. ... The Idaho Territory broke off from the Washington Territory just a few years later, with elected officials who embraced the name forgetting the word wasn't a Native American term – or that it had any meaning at all.

Blue countries - which destination will you reach first if you keep on this road. UK road signs also have road names in brackets which indicates where the current road leads to at certain junctions. e.g. at the roundabout you may see Blackpool A583 (M55), which means that exit is the A583 to Blackpool, but if you keep going you'll get to the M55 motorway.

This is not a French map, this is a Portuguese map printed in Lisbon and meant to serve as a mean of propaganda for the Estado Novo dictatorship. The map exists in French and in English and this appears to be the French version. It has some flaws (Lithuania being labelled as East Prussia, for example) and the French is not perfect. And, of course, this is propaganda.

They don't really "don't recognise" Croatia, they just have no diplomatic relationships with it. Bhutan for example only has a couple of embassies across the world, which doesn't mean that they don't recognise every other country they don't have an ambassador in.

The title says North American, not Central America. Mexico is considered the most southern (continental) part of North America.

a lot of these maps a trivial at best but this one takes the cake... why would you make a map of something like this where the majority of the population "has no word for this"

Hallowe'en is short for All Hallows Eve, hence the apostrophe. Meaning the day before All Hallows Day. So the day before Halloween would be All Hallows Day Eve Eve.

The referendum was held basically right after WW2 - during the last two years of which, the fascists had declared their own country in the industrial north and were fighting against the monarchy and the agrarian south. The fascists were nominally pro-monarchy until the king switched sides in WW2, and a bit salty about it after. Since the north has a much larger population, they used the referendum to remove the king they felt unhappy about.
