I like subtitles, because even though I have fine hearing, the dialogue sounds all jumbled up and I can't understand much from a show, or I do hear it but don't really process it unless I have the subtitles on as well.

I used to hate subtitles on movies in English (as opposed to on movies where I needed it) because I felt like it was distracting me from the action. Now I have kids, and without the subtitles I'm always wondering what they're saying. Now it's always subtitles, all the time, or I'm missing stuff.

yeah - my BF is Brazilian and he watches Netflix in portuguese with english subtitles so he can understand what's going on - then he'll rewatch in english with english subtitles to learn the language. So proud of him! I know, not the topic of this post, but still.. so many reasons for people to use subtitles. I cannot stand them myself because it diverts my attention from the szene as I cannot not read them
I'm not fond of dubbed films, I don't like the way the lips don't match up to what is being said. We enjoy a lot of foreign programs so subtitles work for us. Also my husband is not a native English speaker and can get muddled with some accents.
We have the subtitles on all the time in our house. I do t actually know how it started but it's been the same for years now.
Imagine wanting the actual emotions and understanding the actors chosen for that role put into that role while playing it. A lot of emotional context goes into tone of voice, you lose all of that via dubs, and were already losing sometimes vital context in translation as it is. I want as close an experience to the original intention as possi... God damn it, stop editing that rice ball into a taco, i dont f*****g care.
I can't just watch TV without doing something else at the same time. If the show has subtitles (other than for just occasional translations in say a documentary where they interview various people) I miss s**t because I'm not watching the screen enough.
