Though the sensation has probably been around since our ancestors developed emotions, it wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that we started describing the uncanny as something that gives us "the creeps." Charles Dickens, who enriched the English language with plenty of new words and expressions, is credited with the first use of the phrase in his 1849 novel 'David Copperfield,' to mean an unpleasant, tingly chill up the spine.

A few days ago, Reddit user Mimiqttt set out to find out what the definition means to different people, and posted a question on the platform, asking, "What are some creepy facts you know?" From natural phenomena to the biological workings of our bodies, here are some of the most popular answers they've received.

d**konajunebug:

My dad is a retired EMT/Paramedic/fire-fighter. Years ago he told be about a guy in cardiac arrest that they brought back to life. The guy ended up coming by the station a few weeks later to thank my dad personally because he had heard - while dead - someone say it was time to call it but my dad said to keep trying.

That story has terrified me. To know you’re dead, but not quite dead, and hear other people call it before you’re fully gone. Geesus, no thank yo.

One of the most horrific things I have ever experienced as a paramedic was the phenomenon of “CPR induced consciousness.” It’s where in some individuals who are in full cardiac arrest will regain consciousness during active CPR and beg you to stop due to the agonizing pain of the chest compressions in progress. The first time I ever had that happen to my patient it almost completely broke me. Unfortunately, they could not be resuscitated in the end despite us using every ACLS tool available. I’m considering a DNR for myself due to witnessing it.

I can imagine this was very traumatic (especially as the patient didn't make it) but CPR has saved many a life, including one I witnessed when a colleague of mine went into cardiac arrest - luckily we have a defib which was on the scene within a couple of minutes and the ambulance arrived shortly after. I guess the comfort for you is that you know you're doing it right if the patient regains consciousness??

I saw someone die when I was in hospital with Covid. She died in the opposite hospital bed from me. I would comfort her as best that I could. She would look at me when I was talking to her and I told the nurses to just say, "Shhhh, shhhh, shhhh, you're okay, it's okay" in a soothing voice and it helps her" The nurses said that I provided comfort to her and at least she wasn't alone, she knew she wasn't alone when she died. Someone was there. So I do think that she could hear me.

Yeah, talk to your loved ones when they're nearly there. I told my grandma I hoped she got some good sleep that night, but had said some other things too, talking to her, especially when doing stuff around her.

I think it’s a good thing for hearing to be the last sense to go for people in certain situations. My mom had cancer and when her body started shutting down (we had in home care for her last 3 days) she slipped into a coma like state until her final breath. But it gave us the chance to all be able to say goodbye. We knew she could hear us. My last memory with my mom was her only squeezing my hand everytime I said I. “I love you “. Which I promise gave me so much comfort, knowing that she knew how much I loved her.

I've died a few times in the hospital and it's nothing to be afraid of! It just sucks dying in a hospital and not peacefully at home. I knew I was dead but I was told that I wasn't done yet and had to come back.

My Mom went into a full catatonic state a few hours before she died. But it gave some of us a chance to say goodbye. The one comfort I have is telling her that I loved her and that it was okay to let go. The last 2 1/2 years of her life her health declined especially in the last 6 months. She would often say she was ready to go "home" to be with Jesus and several times when she was hurting really bad she would ask God to please end it and take her home. Being her sole caregiver the last years of her life were both rewarding and gut wrenching because I got to know, learn and see Mom in a different way then when I was growing up. 😭

Your eyes have their own immune system that works separately from your body’s immune system. If your body’s immune system found out it would attack your eyes. I just watched a SciShow about this; if you're of European, Middle Eastern or North African descent, you can blame the Black Death. Apparently, people with certain genes that code for a more aggressive immune response were something like 40% more likely to survive the Black Death, which is huge in a mass mortality event on that scale. However, those more aggressive genes are also more likely to overreact and give you an autoimmune disorder.

This is what all autoimmune diseases are-the immune system gets the wrong message and attacks parts of the body. The worst is systematic lupus because it randomly attacks EVERY part of the body. I have it and multiple sclerosis. MS is where the immune system attacks the myelin sheath of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It makes parts of the body controlled by those areas unable to work correctly and is unpredictable. I have a lemon of a body and I want a refund!

    Deep Dive Thoughts

Scuba diver exploring dark underwater depths with flashlight, representing creepy facts about the world beneath the surface. I believe around 5-10% of the ocean has been explored. We have the technology to study space but it’s not advanced enough to see what’s down there (due to water pressure and darkness and stuff)

The pressure difference between earth's surface and space is approximately 14.5 psi. That is the same pressure difference as being 10m underwater. Engineering something to withstand a 14.5 psi pressure differential is very different to engineering something to withstand a 6500 psi differential.

    Peak Drama Unfolding

Volcano with ominous cloud cover at sunset over dark forest and water, evoking creepy facts about the world atmosphere. There are about 40 supervolcanoes in the world that have yet to erupt. One supervolcano is in Yellowstone National Park and has a magma chamber that is large enough to fit the entire city of Tokyo inside it. There's no indication we're due for a super eruption in our life time, but the thought it could happen still creeps me out.

There is a process called Liquefaction that happens when the ground is loosely packed, nearly saturated, near ground level and prolonged shaking occurs as in an earthquake; the soil is unable to compress and the whole soil/water mixture behaves like water and dense objects sink. When the shaking stops, the soil becomes solid again - here is look at a car: https://www.britannica.com/video/72944/Earthquakes-fracture-rock-masses-fault-line

There are many innocent people in prison. Mind you, I wasn't one of them. I deserved what I got. Several of the women I hung around, though, had not committed the crime of which they were accused. The feds use scare tactics to get people to plead out. Several of the women were told to sign the plea, or the feds would go after their kids. The government can ALWAYS afford a better lawyer.

Just after their WWII surrender, the Japanese government created a system of brothels in case American soldiers thought of taking out frustrations on Japanese women. After the rate of STI's shot up among American GI's the Army made the Japanese government shut them down, the number of *reported* r*pes went up by 800%. Take note that Japan is a very traditional society with plenty of stigma about reporting rape so the actual numbers were probably even more horrific.

I mostly agree with the sentiment - apart from the "dropping a third" comment. A third atomic bomb would (just like No. 1 and 2) hit civilians, the one group that specifically did NOT cross the ocean to be a living nightmare. The atrocities "Japan" (or Germany, the USA, Russia,...) committed were committed by real people, who should have been held accountable for it, no matter what side they were on. Due to a parody of esprit de corps troops and superiors instead unite to fight anyone who dares to try and make Tommy-boy face the music and make raparations.

If rape is indeed just about control, I would suppose, that when a soldier has been fighting he feels a certain urge to revenge and it is usually safer to take it out on civilian women than on soldiers from the other side.

    Quiet Moments Matter

Mother holding child by a window with curtains, dimly lit room, evoking a sense of eerie and creepy facts about the world. The only double-hanging of women to be carried out in modern times was the execution of the Finchley baby farmers. Amelia Sach and Annie Walters would "adopt" unwanted babies for a fee. Then, supposedly, find homes for them. They did not find homes for the babies.

    Alone in Plain Sight

Similarly there are high anxiety conditions of depersonalization and derealization, where someone doesn't believe the world around or them exists or are real at all, or that they don't exist themselves. My daughter had this when she was young. Quite unsettling.

I depersonalize sometimes, and while I do know it's different from Coratd's I can talk about it a bit. If you're familiar with cicadas or even other molting bugs, it's kinda like that. Like your brain is the actual bug but you're in a shell. Like you are an outside source controlling your body. Freaky feeling to be honest, and very frustrating. Doesn't hurt per se, but it's like an out of body experience and feels like your words aren't your own.

The person who most likely did it aparently has lived a full-ish life, they think it was Lina (Medinas) father :( . When I got set on fire and couldn’t walk I went through everything available in every language for this story and also to see if the crazy doctor of poveglia island was real (which he was not,’ no names or records for such a ‘prolific’ doctor). But every other story checks out on that island.

The US government also contributes to these numbers, I imagine. You don't really have rights if you are in prison for a felony. The 13th ammendment to the US constitution explicitly says slavery may be used as a punishment for crime. I know it's common knowledge for those not in the US, but to my fellow US citizens, we aren't all that 'free'.

When salmon begin their famous spawning run, they shut down unnecessary systems so they can channel all of their energy into swimming upstream to mate. That includes the immune system, so spawning salmon are highly susceptible to disease and infection. They basically start to rot before they die. You can see many discolored salmon during their run, and there are even some missing pieces of their bodies. I read about this last year. We are recent transplants to the PNW, so this is all new to me. My daughter and I went to a nearby creek this week to see if the salmon were still doing their thing. Sure enough, we saw one swimming upstream with a big, gaping hole in its back, complete with visible flesh and stringy white things protruding from it. It was awful, but we couldn't look away, either. She asked me not to cook salmon for dinner this week. It's one of my favorite meals, but...yeah, I'm good for now.

Zombie fish! After they spawn they have no urge to do anything else. They just kinda swim around for a couple days/weeks until they die. Then there’s mounds of huge, decaying fish everywhere for a couple weeks until they decompose. It’s pretty gruesome.

Normal cycle of life for salmon. They only spawn once unlike most fish that spawn 1 or more time a year. But as an avid fisherman I hate that our tributaries aren't closed during the spawn because it brings out the worst in most fisherman, they'll stand in ankle deep water casting into a school of hundreds and snag them

Totally normal! But people from anywhere other than the Pacific Northwest are unlikely to know this, and are often shocked or grossed out by it. It’s pretty amazing to think about how those fish are the ones who made it through the whole cycle out of millions of eggs!

Many won't eat farmed fish but those fighters need to make it to their spawning grounds for the next generation to live. Females can lay between 1,000 to 17,000 eggs and only 15% will survive long enough to hatch. So that's 150 to 2,250 offspring only. :( 🐟

    Mixing Colors, Crafting Stories

Paintbrush dipping into dark brown paint on an artist’s palette with various paint colors, illustrating creepy facts about the world. mummy brown--or Egyptian Brown--is an old pigment that the pre-Raphaelites used for paintings. it's a rich color that was made from myrrh, pitch, and the decayed flesh of humans (yup, mummies). artists, for a very long time, did not know the contents of said pigment and we're turned off by it by 1915 because they found it gross and despicable. still, a plenty of famous works feature a paint that is essentially dried-up human tissue.

It’s been estimated that she drank about two gallons of water. It’s also possible to die from drinking less than that if you drink it all at once/within a short period of time. The tl;dr is it causes your brain to swell due to an electrolyte imbalance.

It's more common that people think. Some people have died from water intoxication after taking ecstasy tablets. There was a famous case of that in the UK in the 1990's. Some mental health conditions can also cause psychogenic thirst so the person drinks excessive amounts of water because they feel constantly thirsty.

For anyone in medical school, please learn this fact… hyponatremia and hypernatremia are NOT sodium problems, they are water problems. We give sodium to hyponatremic patients because water follows salt in the kidneys. Therefore, we give excess sodium in order to saturate the receptors and allow water to follow the excess sodium that goes into the urine. It’s such an important concept and it makes me cringe when residents don’t know this.

The ironic part is that many sewer plants only have one Operator on duty, especially in the evenings, nights and weekends. So if you did fall in, no one would be there to throw you the life ring. I've been a licensed Operator for 15 years and we laugh at the futility of the rings.

Right 😂 it genuinely doesn’t gross me out at all. We use other animals’ actual skin for leather, some people can handle eating head cheese, some people eat raw fish sperm or eggs - why would using ground insect shells for pigment gross anyone out? Seems like one of the tamer things we tend to consume!

Think about it this way: the wasp inside the fig is being processed the same way as decaying bugs in the ground. It’s no different than eating a carrot or a potato. It is processed the same way, just comes from a different place. It sounds gross but it’s no worse than eating any other plant.

Sometimes if their diet is lacking protein deer will actually search out birds nests on forest floors, stamp the chicks, and then eat them. There's a type of be called a vulture Bee that feeds on decomposing flesh, they have wild looking hives, and they will in fact make honey from the dead flesh. Honey that is referred to as "meat honey". The honey is in fact edible according to researchers.

I will never understand why anyone would consider this to be “creepy.” It is a phenomenon you literally have no reason to be concerned about. It’s like when people worry about what’s going to happen billions of years from now when the sun expands and engulfs the earth; what possible difference could it make to any of us? Do you have any idea how long a million years is, let alone a billion? This is just nonsensical navel-gazing.

My life was destroyed on Thanksgiving Day, year 2000. My dad was putting up Xmas lights after we ate our meal. He fell off of the ladder, crushed his skull, and sustained a catastrophic brain injury. His body lived, but I lost my beloved father that day. Not only did it destroy his life (he was only 58) but it destroyed mine as well, as my mother decided selfishly to ignore my father’s well-known wishes not to be kept alive in a near-vegetative state. We took care of my dad at home. I loved him, but I lost my 20s and 30s to caring for him. I never moved out, never married, never got a normal job. He died in 2021. I held his hand as he died. My mother refused to even be present. I have never forgiven her for any of this. And I miss my dad terribly. My mother’s a toxic narcissist; my dad was a wonderful dad. Hug your loved ones, everyone. Regret is a bítch, I should know.

My neighbor used to walk her dog through a cemetery near us and didn't realize that they changed their policy concerning dogs in the cemetery until a worker told her. She was really bummed about it because her dog was old and the flat terrain and paved roads made it easier for him to walk. Not thinking, I said that she should try again and if stopped, just tell them he's training to be a cadaver dog. I was being perfectly serious about this until her laugh/snort brought me back to reality. I played along like I was God's gift to stand up and never revealed that I was being sincere.

A Russian scientist, Sergei Brukhonenko, kept a severed/decapitated dog head alive for quite some time (this was a while ago; 1940ish IIRC.) The scientist pumped oxygenated blood into the head (simulating normal blood flow.) The dog’s head reacted to stimuli as if it were still attached to a body - it sniffed, licked, reacted to a feather tickling its nose, and even lapped at food. The severed dog head “lived” this way for 6 months. And before pedants bring it up - yes, it reacted to stimuli immediately after its surgical removal from its body, BEFORE it was connected to the “autojektor”. So yes, someone could know this.

There are currently 1.5 times as many deaths from road deaths than from malaria. Even suicide has more deaths than malaria. And as a carrier of deadly disease, many more people die from diseases carried by humans than from mosquito borne diseases. Deaths from bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhoeal diseases and tubulculosis carried by humans all exceed deaths from mosquito-borne diseases. AIDS is up there, too.

If you want to hear something rather interesting, there are fundamental differences in the number of people who died from fallout in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That was because of the difference between the bombs used - Hiroshima was a gun-type uranium bomb - simple but inefficient. It used about 50Kg of highly enriched uranium, only a small proportion of which was involved in the actual explosion - the rest was just dumped into the environment. Nagasaki was a plutonium implosion type bomb which yielded a similar yield but with about a tenth of the material.

Herculaneum is better preserved than Pompeii it just hasn't been excavated as much. Pompeii was essentially destroyed by falling volcanic rock, its dead later being buried by ash after rigor had set in. Herculaneum was destroyed by pyroclastic flows so hot that the liquids in people's bodies turned to vapor and exploded instantly. Brain matter turned into glass. Bone and metal were welded together. All that happened before Pompeii. Currently, the population in the area is so large that the Italian government is having a hard time deciding whether or not it's worth it to warn or evacuate them or not

Fruits, nuts, cereals, carrots, potatoes, sprouts, all babies. Dairy is all baby food. Apart from salt, there is no product that Western humans eat that isn't either a baby or baby food.

I thought it was the bacteria from the dirt and sweat decaying that causes the odor. What I learned is that, unless you’re regularly taking a medication that does have an odor that is detectable when you sweat, in most cases, fresh sweat doesn’t really smell right away, until the bacteria in it start to die and decay, and that decay is what smells.

He did NOT want to live “that way” (as his mom had had a similar brain injury and he had seen how horribly she died), but my mom ignored his wishes and told the doctors to “do everything to keep him alive”. It was horrible. He lived 21 years in a near-vegetative state. I can only hope that he was not “aware” of how bad his condition/situation was.

A huge number of current and future medical treatments would be impossible without some level of animal experimentation. I'm not sure what else the OP had in mind for these animals, individual little funerals?

    DC
    Community Member
2 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

A large number of potential treatments and drugs get discarded because they're poisonous towards rats or mice, while the target organism is human and might react differently. Animal experimentation is, in the vast majority, pointless, and in the cases just stated, it's to our own disadvantage - but has a strong lobby. Some day in the not so far future, if it not already happened anyway, the loss of human lives caused by animal experimentation will exceed the number of additional lives to be saved - we shouldn't discard the knowledge we got from there, but continuing needs justification, and in the vast majority, it should lead nowhere else than into jail because it's useless torture. Examining which berries make mice obese the fastest and such - really? That's important for WHAT? Stem cell research is ethically flawless. We could shift over most medical experiments already within a short timeframe, and have every reason to expect more useful - more life saving - results. Why don't we? Cells' rights activists, or how those antiscientific morons are called.

Yeah, and how else would they handle biomaterials? Testing is needed and unless people volunteer, animals are the only way to go. The animals are potentially infected with stuff and burning the carcasses is an effective way to prevent it from spreading.

If you breed them and still need the male, you have to prevent this by, for example, putting a credit card between the head of the female and male mantis and hold it there for a while so she can't turn around to bite the male.

Regardless of that, the Mantis has been my all-time favorite insect (followed by a tie between dragonflies and big fat bumblebees) since childhood. I think they’re beautiful—-and some of the more exotics ones are spectacular. Every Mantis I have encountered seems to be both intelligent and self-aware. They’re also very much aware of you, as opposed to other insects who don’t seem to acknowledge you. You can look at a Mantis and they will look back. They’ll also move their heads to keep and eye on you if you move around them. I know not everyone likes them, and will kill every Mantis they see, so if I see a Mantis in a place where they’re not safe, I will move them to someplace that is safe.

Its against the law for a pharmacist to tell seniors on part D they are paying 2.5 times the cost for lets say metformin than someone off the street w/ no insurance. In my hypethetical trans action , The drug costs the pharmacy $2 ,HE charges $4. if grandma comes in w/ her medicare card she is charged $10 copay.. The drug maker then takes $7 leaving $3 instead of $4 as the profit margin to the pharmacy. He is bound by law to say nothing about the scam.

We know the US health system is fskd up, but it's nowhere near as simple a 'scam' as you make it sound, and no way is it illegal to tell people, just that it may (I don't know if it actually does) breach terms and conditions of contract.

If it was illegal, that never stopped us at the pharmacy I worked. It was nice to see people's faces when we would spill da beans. We also made people's pets, that needed a medication, senior citizens in our records, so they could be given a 10% discount. It was against company policy but that didn't stop us either (until it did - the a******s in corporate made it so that only a pharmacist could give senior discounts and very few were willing to go up against corporate).

I didn't cook or keep my placenta, but I asked to have a good look at it. It's marvelous. My body grew an entire new organ (as well as a human being). I was absolutely fascinated by the size of it. And the only time I would ever be comfortable seeing one of my own organs outside of my body..

Something something “regaining lost nutrients”? I imagine that’s (maybe) one of the reasons why primitive cultures practiced it. Here’s what I read about modern placentophagy: “People who support eating the placenta say that it can raise your energy and breast milk quantity. They also say it can level off your hormones, lowering your chances of postpartum depression and insomnia.” Of course, NONE of that is scientifically proven or even scientifically tested. So, basically, it’s a lot of woo-woo.

A cow will eat the placenta shortly after giving birth, and I assume other animals do also. I always assumed it was to not attract predators to the newborn calf, but I don't have any scientific research to back up that theory.

Yes, I grew up on a cattle farm. My father said, yes it does help eliminate the draw of predators, but he also believed it boosted nutrition after giving birth. Probably just assumed, but it made sense to me.

It's the Candiru, and the fish that swam up the pee stream of a man peeing in a river is the only documented case of a candiru entering a human urethra, and is suspected to be a myth due to impossible fluid physics and the physiology of the fish. There has been, however, reported cases of the fish entering the vaginal canal of a few women.

So, for various grim reasons, Australia has a quite advanced, very knowledgable specialist law enforcement unit dealing with online child SA imagery. They showed once this mummy blogger who considers herself a ‘safe’ mommy blogger; She never ever shows her kids faces, she never shows like…any part of their bare bodies, not even their backs, she never shows them at the beach or in the pool, unless they’re in those short/t-shirt surf/swim suit thingies that cover them up from shoulder to knee, and don’t show their shape or body, she never shows them in bedclothes or anything you’d consider revealing or private moments. Most of her photos of her kids are just their hands, or taken from behind, or neck down, while the kids are fully dressed, like in jeans and coats, for safety and privacy. This unit approached her to show something, and they placed a tracking code in some of these photos, and within hours had tracked those photos, one of them was her three kids in heavy coats and woolly hats, on an autumn day, like these kids could be dolls, you can’t see faces, body, shape, skin, you can barely see their hair under their hats… Those photos still ended up on Paedo websites, with creepy comments by child abusers about how they like seeing kids dressed like that. Because they’re not just turned on by revealing or inappropriate images of kids, they’re attracted to children and that means having these specific preferences, a covered up child is just as attractive to them as a kid at the beach. Basically. There’s no safe way to have images of your child online. But wait, it’s worse… If you go to a lot of family bloggers pages, they’ll have ‘Parent run’ pages for their underage children, sometimes as young as toddlers, where post solely content of the kids. Its just s way to have multiple pages as distinct revenue streams but…it’s also something else. If you look at the follower stats of a lot of these pages, very often a majority of the followers, sometimes more than half, are adult men between 18 and 55. These pages will be like, this 3 year old girl going to water parks, with lots of shots taken from the bottom of a slide as she slides down it, in her bathing costume, or playing in the pool, like these kids LIVE in the pool… So yeah.

Furthermore history and even simple logic can be rewritten just by changing a few google search results and changing the contents of textbooks, hell, even just removing a scene from a movie can wipe all knowledge of it from existence, simply by changing a source of information and not saying anything about it to anyone can rewrite everyone's knowledge TLDR: the human mind is extremely manipulatable, anything you know could be a lie and you wouldn't know it

Untrue. If untreated, black mamba bites cause death anywhere from 7 to 15 hours, not 20 minutes. Even the most venomous snake on the planet, the inland taipan, can only cause death ~45 minutes after being bitten. No snakebite causes death in 20 minutes. (A person might collapse ~45 minutes after a bite from a black mamba, but it takes hours for the symptoms to progress to respiratory failure and death.)

This is ridiculous and is a stupid urban myth. OF COURSE our brains can imagine a face it hasn't seen before, just as it can imagine a tree or mountain or building it's never seen before. Also the dream thing is so stupid - what, are we to believe that scientists have gone into people's dreams with some magical technology then matched the face of every dream person with the face of one of the billions of people on the earth?

Not disagreeing with you, just trying to break it down and thin’ it through. So please bear with me as my brain starts just spitballing ideas. Wouldn’t one have had to seen actual faces in order to know what a face looks like, in order to create one on a canvas or in their mind’s eye from knowledge of how faces are constructed? Now, someone blind from birth may only “see” faces by touch, but then they’d still be familiar with the construction of a face, just in a different way, and could possibly sculpt a face from touch memory, even make up a new face by combining the way different faces feel.

My brain cannot create a face at all. I can remember what people look like but no details and I can't picture their face in my head. Consequently i can't remember very much about what even my own parents look like

I highly doubt this is true....and how did they even figure this out??? How do they know that the "extras" in my dreams are people I've seen before when awake.

That's flat out incorrect. The last execution by guillotine occurred in France on September 10, 1977.

1977. It's a well known fact at this point, and google is a thing. You have to work extra hard to be this kind of wrong.

Bored Panda, I enjoy the many things you post online. However, many things you claim as fact simply aren't true. You need better fact checkers.

France is known for their cuisine and haute couture not science and the justice system.

During the embalming process in a funeral home, internal organs are sucked out and replaced with embalming fluid. The organs that are sucked out go right into the sewer system. So not only are dead people's organ bits in the sewers but so too are any medications they were on, diseases they had, etc. Kind of a head scratcher when you go to a hospital or doctor's office and see the bio hazard waste bins - yet a funeral home, which process a higher volume of bio hazard waste, has no such disposal protocols

I don't believe this. First of all, you can't just 'suck out' an organ nor will they fit down a drain, and second, if they replace it with fluid, to what purpose? How is this better? How do you keep the body from making sloshing noises? What will that do to the weight of the body, since it has to be dressed after embalming? Why would you want to remove the organs anyway? To my knowledge, they rinse out the bodily fluids and replace it with embalming fluid, but the organs are left in place.

It’s definitely not true. My friend is a mortician who embalms bodies. I’ve witnessed the process firsthand (with the permission of the deceased’s family.) No organs were sucked out XD And besides, as you say, removing all internal organs and replacing it with fluid would cause the body to become incredibly heavy. The blood and other fluids are drained (woohoo for trocars!) and then embalming fluid is perfused into the corpse.

Not only is the sucking out of organs not true, the biohazard/bio waste claim is misleading. The bio waste of funeral homes compared to hospitals and dr offices is minimal and they do follow bio waste regulations. Further, anybody using a toilet is flushing bio waste down the drain, including any fluid-borne communicable diseases. This is why we have wastewater treatment plants.

I was studying to become an embalmer & the professor said that the drained blood simply goes down the drain. When some male students were horrified, she shrugged and said menstruating women do the exact same thing. No women in the class were fazed, of course.

Looked up the source on Reddit and this is not true. The fluid from the organs is removed, not the organs themselves.

No. You can’t “suck out” organs, full stop. Laparoscopic surgery would be a lot easier if you could! You definitely can’t do it via a cannula inserted into a blood vessel, no matter how big it is. That’s just laughable.

In the US, IF your organs are removed, it would be for an autopsy. They will soak the removed organs in formaldehyde & place them back in the body cavity when done with the autopsy. If no autopsy is performed, they DO NOT remove the organs, just drain the fluids & replace with formaldehyde.

I'm also thinking this isn't accurate. Only your blood gets removed and replaced.

This is just stupid. Blood is drained from the body, and THAT is replaced with embalming fluid, the body is opened, organs are removed and stored for proper disposal. The body cavity is then stuffed, eyes are sewn shut, mouth, r****m (and vagina opening when applicable) are plugged to prevent "seepage"

And yet people won't let their relatives donate their organs because "they need them in the afterlife" or "I don't want them cut up" yet have no idea likely that their organs are just going to be dumped out anyway and go to waste.

The organs aren’t dumped out. This post is a myth. But they DO go to waste when the corpse is perfused with embalming fluid.
