This is a case of its not what you said but how you said it. It came across to me, and it seems the recipient, as very aggressive. Easily could have said something like "hey I was planning on this being a laid back thing and we'd each cover our own tab"

All he had to say was, "this is all I have for you and I'm planning for this to be low-key and causal, is that cool?". I appreciate the openness of expectations, but this reads less of open communication and wanting a relaxed evening, and instead like he's overly concerned about wasting money and effort on her. A guy who values spending time together over meeting an arbitrary social expectation is a win. A guy who doesn't think you're worth spending effort or even a little money on, is not.

For me i think it comes off as harsh like he thought she would act all entitled and said it in a way that made it sound like he assumed she expected it to be all fancy and for him to pay for everything/ it kinda came off like he was already angry. I think if he just stated "I dont want this to be formal, and think we should split the bills for our own stuff" comes off way better. It states his plans and lets the other know ahead of time without sounding like they assume the person is gonna act like an entitled a**e. However i have been dating my BF for 3 years and consider him my soul mate. When we met on Tinder I thought he didnt like me because he texts very flatly and never used a single emoji or anything to express tone, turns out he just texts that way to everyone and I am glad I still went on our first date. I am ND and struggle alot with text tone if it isnt extremely obvious but have gotten better because of him.

The answers, or even their reluctance to say, tell you something. While "Had it 6 months and it is a cow to drive" is not likely to be shared even if true, some answers might be encouraging. "Had it the entire life of the car but getting too old to fix it myself" would be reasonable and not off-putting. Yeah, people lie but if they are honest and there is a good reason for sale it can make the process easier.l
