We all have our secret shames. Guilty little skeletons in the closet that we would never dare to confess to even our closest friends. Well, not when sober, at least.

The great thing about the internet is its anonymity. Behind the protection of a screen, people can feel liberated to say things they never would in face-to-face conversation, and really say what they mean. Of course, it goes both ways and this can also lead to all kinds of bullying and abuse, but that's for another post.

This post is all about getting it off your chest and owning up to past wrongs. While confessing anonymously to randoms on the internet is hardly taking responsibility for one's actions, the very act of confession can alleviate feelings of guilt and help people to get on with their lives. From the hilariously trivial to the actually quite profound, these confessions will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, and might even make you reflect on your own past transgressions.

So scroll down below to check out the sordid details for yourself, and let the therapy begin!

According to an article in Scientific American, any type of open and truthful disclosure reduces stress and helps individuals come to terms with their behavior. "It is not coincidental that some of the most powerful people or institutions in many cultures encourage people to confess their transgressions," they write. "And there is very strong evidence that writing about upsetting experiences or dark secrets can benefit your mental and physical well-being."

Just this year, the next town over from me flooded. I didn't lift a finger to help. Then the Zoo next to that flooded and I was like "Oh no! What can I do to help the poor parrots?!". I am fully aware this is an irrational and morally dubious reaction, but my I have to force myself to remember to care about humans, my first instincts take care of it with animals.

YES! I think it's the helplessness... they can't get out on their own! When I had pets I worried about how I would get them out in a fire... turns out you don't even think, just grab 'em and run.

People at least have a chance, they can open a door or a window. A pet in a locked house is trapped & has no chance to save itself, that’s what bothers me most.

Really? A 3 year old "knows better"? A human with a severe mental impairment "knows better"? There all are types of people, and thinking everyone "knows" the same things or are guilty of something just for being human is crazy. I love animals to death, but to devalue human lives and put animal ones on a pedestal is just....mind boggling to me.

I might get downvoted on this but I don't feel that way. I dunno why maybe it's cause I'm selfish or because I'm scared of dogs or something. One time my friends said to me would you rather save a human or a dog and I automatically said human because for me their more important. Sorry if anyone gets offended by this.

It occurs to me also with the homeless. It sucks to see them in that position, don't get me wrong, but it's the state's responsability to help them and they usually have some of the blame. But pets deserve a loving family, with plenty of food and play and a warm place to spend their lives. Also feel very sad when they get killed in movies and TV!

I’m the same way with animals dying or being hurt in movies. I mean, I do get upset when characters who are true innocents die, but by and large I don’t feel as bad when most of the humans get hurt or die as I do when the animals do.

"First, simply putting emotional turmoil into words changes how we think about it. Giving concrete form to secret experiences can help categorize them in new ways. For instance, when we translate emotional experiences into words and stories, we start to think about them in a simpler, less menacing context. There is no solid evidence to explain this phenomenon, but it most likely occurs because talking or writing about a disturbing event helps us understand it better. And things we do not understand cause greater anxiety."

"Dozens of studies have also shown that expressive writing is linked to less stress and improved sleep and cardiovascular function. We know that better sleep is associated with enhanced immune function and better general health—which correlate with better mental health, too."

"Expressive writing and religious confession are not panaceas, but these forms of release can help us get through difficult times. The beauty is that you do not have to be religious to benefit from confession. The underlying mechanisms are available to anyone for the price of a pencil and paper."

I was secretly pleased cause they don't have their s**t together and live in a trashy apt. with no ambition to make their life better. his gf is also not right in the head. I am glad they lost it cause it would have made mess out of their already messy life. however, I'm curious if it would have given him a reason to change.

Hope you're ok. Sometimes the toughest decisions are the best ones but it takes time to feel positive about it. Hang in there!

Just means you have a varied taste in music. A metalhead I know likes Enya. Nothing wrong with that.

so, I'm gonna be that person: just buy the metal ones and avoid wasting trees! This way you can also keep the delivery guy guessing about the number of people eating the food (Even though he's not. Honestly, no one cares)

Normal. Dogs are amazing companions, but puppies are absolutely horrible. The only good thing about them is that they are cute and for a serious person like myself, it's by no means a redeeming vice. I couldn't wait for my dog to grow up and start behaving as if I actually spent all those thousands of hours training him. Even though we are not entirely compatible, he's for the most part great. When I remember him as a puppy or an adolescent however, it makes me sick. People who think that the best period of a dog's life is when it's little, never ever had a dog!

I don't know about anchovies on pizza (never tried them) but pineapple is suprisingly good. (Now bring on the downvotes!)

This isn't just women, and it isn't just an opposite-sex thing. Tall, handsome, charming men are also often promoted by men.

Reevaluate your relationship. Why do people stay in them when they clearly don't want to?

You can! Get in touch with a (no kill) shelter and find a new, loving home for him! You're not happy, he's not happy, go do something about it.
