Some people are so wrong you don’t know whether to laugh or cry. And unfortunately, they are often also the ones that proclaim their ‘truths’ the loudest. That’s why their incorrect statements have to be refuted loudly as well, and what better way to reach a vast audience than turning to the good old internet?

Refuting false information is exactly what the ‘Confidently Incorrect’ subreddit is for. To be more exact, it’s “for those times when people are way too smug about their wrong answer”, according to their own description. Even though the community was started just a few years ago, in 2020, it has already amassed nearly 990k members, eager to show just how wrong—yet confident—some people can be. We’ve gathered some pretty colorful examples of that, so scroll down to find them on the list below and enjoy.

The sciences like astronomy and medicine use the metric system as a standard regardless of what country you're in (yes that includes the US). The metric system is all based on tens and it's very easy to convert between units of measurement, which reduces errors. Check any medication label, it's going to be in mg or micrograms

Watching someone dig their own grave by being smug about their wrong answer can be surprisingly amusing. However, misinformation online is quite a prevalent problem in this day and age. And it’s likely that the internet is where such mistaken people find the false information in the first place.

Even if that’s not where they learn it, they might find supporting statements online nevertheless. Pew Research Center pointed out that, according to a 2016 study, people tend to seek information online that aligns with their views. (Even—or maybe especially so?—if they’re far from the truth.)

Pew Research Center also revealed that after the election in 2016, 64% of adults believed fake news stories can cause a great deal of confusion. However, as much as 23% of them admitted to have shared fabricated political stories themselves, whether by mistake or intentionally.

According to Pew Research Center, the way fake news spreads is based on people’s primal quest for success and power, which is why it’s likely to persist in the future. Experts predict that, “manipulative actors will use new digital tools to take advantage of humans’ inbred preference for comfort and convenience and their craving for the answers they find in reinforcing echo chambers.”

Another enabling factor for the spread of misinformation online is the fast pace of technological change. It is believed that the rising speed, reach and efficiency of the internet, together with an abundance of online applications, can magnify the aforementioned human tendencies to the extent that false information crowds out reliable information.

But then why do we continue to believe the online world, you may wonder? Well, Forbes delved deeper into that and pointed out that looking for information online is easy—why go to a library when you have an array of webpages ready at your fingertips? Moreover, there are also no gatekeepers scanning and filtering information.

“Instead of browsing a small carefully curated set of high-quality informational streams, our online citizenry are thrown into an ocean of almost limitless low-quality information, forced to expend considerable effort to forage for the rare bit of accurate insight,” the article read in part.

It pointed out that nowadays, instead of turning to a competent person, equipped with all the necessary knowledge, people tend to do a quick online search and click on the first link, whether it’s reliable or not.

Similarly to counting on the things online to be true, we tend to also believe the confident people around us. As a matter of fact, our brains are wired in a way that allows them to influence our beliefs.

According to a 2017 study, people base their beliefs on three main factors: personal experience, views of the majority, and views of the confident people. The study of 23 individuals revealed that the first two were positively linked to the reward system in our brain, responsible for how happy we are after choosing something. Yet, the third one—the opinion of confident people—was the only one to have an additional effect on that reward system.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, published scientific estimates of the global CO2 emissions for all on land and submarine volcanos “lie in a range from 0.13 gigaton to 0.44 gigaton per year.” This is a fraction of the CO2 produced by human activity. In 2021, the global CO2 emissions from energy combustion & industrial processes alone reached a record high of 36.3 billion tonnes (or gigatons, GT), data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) showed. “On a global level, volcanoes currently emit just a few percent of the man-made CO2 production,” Bechkne said, highlighting that CO2 emissions of human activity have dramatically increased in the past decades, while volcanic emissions have not." https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-volcanoes-co2/fact-check-volcanoes-do-not-produce-more-co2-emissions-than-human-activity-idUSL1N2XV1HA

Here's what I think the problem with his math is. He calculated both as on time events. And while volcano is a one time event, the human contribution is ongoing. He likely used a number like xx billion metric tons in 2021. What he fails to account for is year to year contributions.

I haven't done the research. Volcanos do indeed dump a ton of CO2, but unless it's a super volcano I doubt it is more than what humans have managed to do. I'll look into it though. I haven't done a deep dive into volcano LORE in a while.

*sigh* First of all, the last volcanic eruption from a volcano on Greece (Santorini) was in 1950. Secondly, humans still produce more CO2 than all 1,500 +- active volcanoes, even when we have a lot of activity from them.

Fact: C02 contributes to global warming. Fact: Human activity creates CO2. Therefore it is a fact that Human activity contributes to global warming. There is no way around this. Now, some may argue over the amount of global warming Humans are responsible for, but you cannot deny that Human activity contributes, at some level, to global warming.

More on volcanoes vs. humans: "Occasionally, eruptions are powerful enough to release carbon dioxide at a rate that matches or even exceeds the global rate of human emissions for a few hours." NOTE "FOR A FEW HOURS," while we humans keep it up, year round.

For anyone wondering,"In a 2011 peer-reviewed paper, U.S. Geologic Survey scientist Terry Gerlach summarized five previous estimates of global volcanic carbon dioxide emission rates that had been published between 1991 and 1998. Those estimates incorporated studies reaching back to the 1970s, and they were based on a wide variety of measurements, such as direct sampling and satellite remote sensing. The global estimates fell within a range of about 0.3 ± 0.15 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, implying that human carbon dioxide emissions were more than 90 times greater than global volcanic carbon dioxide emissions."
