While there's still a good chunk of the year left before we get to spook each other during Halloween or until another internet sensation like Skinamarink provokes a two-week-long bout of insomnia, the internet is not short of supply when it comes to oddly terrifying material.

If you're one of those daredevils who takes great pleasure in horror films and reading creepypastas (alone in your apartment!), then you'll be right at home in the Oddly Terrifying community. From mysterious fingerprints on one's ceiling to creepy, abandoned churches in the middle of nowhere, this is pure nightmare fodder that will surely give you the heebie-jeebies. And in case someone asks, you'll find us under a well-lit blanket coloring our mandalas, trying to return to our happy place. Hopefully, there's no creepy forests on the way back.

This is the one thing that terrifies me to the point of complete existential chaos. I'm not sure why, it's not like I have plans to leave Earth's atmosphere. It's the idea of the infinite void, I think. There was a Netflix original movie last year with Toni Collette, one of my favorite actors, about a shuttle that takes off with a dead body in it and the crew doesn't know. I had to turn it off during the first scene because I was already having a panic attack.

How did he fit into that suit with his giant brass balls?

Under the glass case inside a trapper’s store called the Banff Indian Trader Shop, an unsuspecting-looking wooden cabin located at the edge of Banff, Alberta, lies a mysterious creature. A half-fish, half-terrifying "man-beast of the seven seas," presumably caught in the waters of Fiji in the 18th century.

In broad daylight, this mummified monstrosity looks exactly what it sounds like: a dried-up monkey stitched up on top of a giant fish à la merman. Something you'd imagine a 16th-century sailor spinning tall tales about to scare the bejeezus out of other sailors. And sure, it looks kind of comical under normal circumstances.

But leave me alone with it in the wee hours, and I'm pretty sure you'd find me rocking back and forth with my arms around my knees. Even though it was probably me and no one else who decided to go seek out this monstrosity, despite the possibility of a sleepless night - something that r/oddlyterrifying is excellent at, often making others like myself question why we come back here time and time again in the first place.

Created in 2013, a few years after creepypasta's Slenderman took internet by the storm, r/oddlyterrifying today boasts 2.6 million community members, ranking among the top subreddits for horror-related content. Honestly, it's not difficult to see the appeal, since there's only a few (safe) places on the net where people can act both as digital curators and consumers of a cornucopia of spine-tingling, possibly cursed imagery.

Of course, considering that 71% of Americans under the age of 35 enjoy scary movies, it's not entirely surprising why some horror enthusiasts might look for an extra thrill either on r/creepypasta or its frightening cousin, r/oddlyterrifying.

Doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt like heck while said intestines try to find their proper positions after surgery. I had a piece of my large intestines removed so it was pulled out, operated upon, and unceremoniously stuffed back. The gas bubbles that got trapped as my bowels resettled were awful, until one morning I let out an almighty fart, and all was suddenly well. Best feeling everrrrrr.

What's your definition of "vacation" or a "basic car"? I thought it was roughly 1$ = 1€ quite recently. You can definitely still spend a good deal less on vacation or a car. Or are prices in the US now so horrendous? Not to say you couldn't spend that amount. But then again thirty years ago surely there were already rich people that could spend that amount of money or more on these things without thinking twice.

Okay for the first on in a fancy burger place, but the others ? No. A Smart are at around $15k and vacations depend greatly on how, where, how far you're travelling and how many people come. Nah, housing is the issue.

What planet are you guys on? I mean, you could FIND a burger for that much, but at McDonald's (what I think most people would've thought of), they're about $5 (McDouble and med. fries), a basic car costs about $15,000 and my last vacation cost about $2,000.

For some people basic seems to be a new SUV, probably because it's the societal norm in their neighborhoods or something like that. I don't know if they don't realise the degree of luxury they are already living in and that a smaller used car fulfills the same basic needs or if I am just being weird for having been raised to see cars as tools and to rather spend money on other things. (My grandparents live in a wealthy area and one time every car on their road except theirs had tires punctured XD)

According to acclaimed horror novelist Stephen King, horror films often act as a "barometer of the societal anxieties that plague our collective subconscious." While this perspective may romanticize the genre, Clark McCauley, a research professor of psychology, suggests that one prevalent reason why young adults, particularly men, seek the thrills of horror movies is to display their courage and bravado.

"Young males often compete to watch horror, to show 'I can take it,'" McCauley explained to Bored Panda in an email, noting that desensitization to feelings of disgust tends to occur faster than desensitization to feelings of arousal, leading to an increased fondness for horror among this demographic (which statistically ranges between 15-25).

San Bernardino: horseshoe shaped valley that straddles San Andreas fault. It sits within ancient lake bed and is surrounded on 3 sides by mountains. When quakes hit, tremors ripple through soft ancient lake bed, ricochet off mountains, slam into oncoming tremors and cause liquefaction. So, where was the new multi-level freeway interchange built? In drained Santa Ana riverbed ...on edge of that ancient lake bed. Not long after completion, they "reinforced" the supporting pillars by pouring concrete sleeves around the posts. Nothing drastic because: aesthetics. The entire structure is a mess. I feel your pain, Chicago.

I was on the red line train in Chicago, headed for work. We went underground and a couple mins later a giant fireball flared right outside my window. A couple of us looked at around, at each other and just kinda shrugged our shoulders and went back to our phones. No biggie. Also a train went 55mph down an underground straightaway for a like half a mile with one of the doors wide open. I took a video. They closed a stop or two later. But I'd still rather be on the train than in traffic in Chicago.

In his 1998 essay 'When Screen Violence Is Not Attractive,' McCauley argues that there are two key factors that influence the enjoyment of horror films (but are not limited to moving pictures). "First is that enjoyment of horror depends not upon the balance of positive and negative emotions elicited," he wrote, "but rather upon excitement and involvement that can be associated with either positive or negative emotions."

It also killed Warren Zevon, as he played many college auditoriums which still had asbestos. Turns out Andy Kaufman died from a different type of lung cancer.

They were all doomed. My father was an insulator back when asbestos was the standard. Not only did he and his co-workers have it in their lungs, but one of their wives died because she got cancer just from washing his clothes. They found asbestos in her lungs just from that. That stuff is sooooo deadly.

How did she suffer from it? It was a star vehicle produced by the studio to showcase her talents. Her suffering started long before Oz by her parents who had her working at the age of 3, her mom put her on diet pills when she was 10 or 11 and SO many people (once she really started to make it big) used her for her money and success--including her mom and stepdad. Poor Judy never saw the money that she seemingly made for everyone else.

These things always make me despair a little bit more about H. Sapiens. Women live in fear of men, and have every reason to. They may not be 'quivering in their shoes' - but listen to women talk about going to work in the dark of morning, or coming home at night.

Thing is, very few of us are willing to acknowledge our fears AND take steps to get strong, stay strong, learn defensive-offensive skills. First response to challenges is NOPE. (Those hanging tents on the cliff face were a good example.) Being strong, aware, prepared is exhilarating. It's liberating. Living in fear sucks.

Your answer (coming from a Portland resident): Portland's tax dollars are being completely wasted and covid made things 100x'a worse and basically has turned the city into a giant camp of unhoused people that are incredibly sick both mentally and physically; a short drive through downtown looks like a scene out of a zombie movie with junkies screaming at unseen demons and picking their infected skin into oblivion. 😔

Fear, it seems, holds as much significance in human existence as basic needs like food and water, manifesting itself in various forms such as movies, roller coasters, and unexpected tragedies. Or, in our case, the chilling images on r/oddlyterrifying.

The ability of these uncanny images to provoke reactions, then, suggests that our response to them is influenced more by our individual identities than the authenticity of the images themselves. In other words: there's nothing wrong with you, whether you seek folkloric 18th-century mummified monstrosities or stare at the darkly-lit abyss that is r/oddlyterrifying for cheap thrills.

Yeah, people will lay down these nail strips (or other things) to damage the car and make the driver get out, so they can do stuff to them (kidnap, r@pe, harm in some way)

Video of South African armored car driver running a gauntlet of would-be thieves. Hazards in road, gunfire, blockade. He pushed the blockade car out of the road and never hit the brakes. Guy was former special forces with nerves of cold steel.

This is happening to my grandmother right now. She doesn't have an official diagnosis but it's very apparent that she has some form of dementia. She will be 88 on Thursday. I live with her and take care of her (for the most part). Nobody in the family understands what I do here. And they don't want to either. This is why whenever we have those BP "are you okay, fellow pandas?" comments, I'm never sure if I am.

I'm so sorry you're going through this with your grandmother. I had the opportunity to see my friend's mom slowly, and then faster and faster, simply disappearing her mind. It was as if she had become a shadow of a once very vibrant and intelligent woman. I've never seen anything sadder before.

    LillieMean

Funny. Often in a dream I don't see myself in the mirror, I'm invisible. When I'm awake, if I have a dissociative episode, I don't always recognize myself in the mirror properly. Like, it's me, but not really. At first it was scary but now I say, hello there, to the creature in the mirror. Maybe it's also important to accept mental health as part of your life and not just try to "get better, back to normal" because that's not always possible.

    María Hermida
    Community Member

That sounds terrifying! Life is hard enough without your brain trying to pull your leg. The weird thing is how we "get used" to nearly anything. My brain has been telling me I'll be much better if I were dead, for the last twenty years or so. I've learnt two important things: to ignore it most of the time, and not to make decisions when I'm really sad. As you say, back to normal is not always possible.

    1. Identify an issue that can be exploited emotionally. 2 identify an Other to blame for that issue. 3. proclaim yourself the only one who can fix it & them. Works surprisingly well still, after hundreds of thousands of years. You too can become a demagogue..

Draining a bog near a big city is usually a terrible idea. Not particularily because of environmental factors, but because of the old cars and stuff that have bodies in them. And I am not entirely making that up. It's happened. Even in Canada.

Oh, no! I have three kidney stones in my left kidney. Last summer I was experiencing extraordinary pain throughout my left side, my back, and abdomen. Ahhhh! Did I have an obstruction in an intestine? Was a major organ about to explode? Cancer? Appendicitis? Finally, an ultrasound showed that I had three kidney stones. This was 10 months ago. The kidney stones are still in there. I still experience minor discomfort almost every day. Sometimes the terrible pain. I do not have health insurance, though, so I cannot afford to get rid of them. Darn.

Think how much money you have and traveling to Europe may be an option for you. I had my kidney stones removed in Poland (with insurance, RIRS method). I know that if I do this in private hospital it would be 1000-2000 USD. I remember how it was. Being constantly in so much pain. I decided to write to you now, because I can't think about someone not being able to get help because it is to expensive - if you need recommendation in Poland I will send you some info with good clinics. Almost every young doctor I met in Poland speaks English so there is no language barier. Removing my stones changed my live so much!

Read up on Alfred Hitchcock and the things he did to actress TippivHedron while filming the movie The Birds. One example is he locked her in the bedroom unknowingly with live crows. The crows busting in was real. Hitchcock was notorious for doing this type of thing while filming his movies.

I lived in a place in Florida once that had plumbing issues like this. Every time it rained (which was a lot because...Florida) the waster would backup through the toilet and flood my apartment with water and hundreds of huge palmetto beetles (aarge type of cockroach) it was so disgusting! Thankfully the landlord let me out of my lease and I moved as quickly as possible!

My neighbours have 2 dogs. One starts barking which sets the other off. Then its constant barking for the next 8 hours. It can be just as annoying as someone playing unacceptably loud music. Sometimes, just sometimes it can really get to me.

This is so sad. I can understand how frustrating it must be, we all know how annoying a barking dog is, especially if it happens all day everyday. But for the person's who's dog this is, it is very hard to control especially if this person is working full time. A dog that loves barking is a difficult thing to deal with, difficult to break that habit.

In my city, you can file noise complaints with the police. There are requirements in order to do so and I would only do so as a last resort. There are a couple of annoying dogs in my area but dogs bark and the owners rarely let them back late at night or early in the morning so I just deal with it.

So Christianity has always been kind of a death cult, hasn’t it? I mean, they worship a guy that came back from the dead, and the main religious symbol is the thing he died on. I guess it makes sense. (no offense meant, I’m just not a Christian myself, and from the outside it’s an interesting take) (sorry to use the word cult, I don’t mean it in a derogatory way)

We don't know that for sure. The kids he allegedly "abused" have been the adults talking, even Aaron Carter said none of it was true. Michael once said, (don't quote me, but it was something along this lines) "after we settle people will actually believe I did something wrong." And he regretted doing so. He wasn't wrong. Anyways we will never really know.

Am I the only one who feels guilty about applying eyebrow pencil or mascara? It feels like I'm destroying their home and causing horrible chaos. I'm pretty sure Betty missed George after yesterday's Taupe wave. And today there will be a funeral. After all, these little friends are your useful friends.

I remember at 7 or so, my baby teeth were coming out and for some reason I just kept three or four of them in my top dresser drawer. My dad was putting laundry away and found them, looked at me like I had lost my mind and said, "are...are these your TEETH???" I nodded and he seemed to grab every measure of calm he could muster and said, "Ok, we're going to throw these away and I'll give you $5."

Geamana? Was a lovely normal town that unfortunately, was flooded with toxic waste in the 70's, during the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu, who decided to exploit the copper deposits around the village. The town was evacuated within just one year. The mine itself is no longer operating either, but still remains the largest copper deposit in Romania iirc, and at one point was producing 11,000 tons of copper a year. But instead of safely getting rid of the waste, the village was sacrificed. :/

Those devices were designed to look as frightening as possible because some of them weren't actually meant to be used. The usual first step in torture was the "showing of the instruments", which in many cases was enough to extort a confession. If being from the 1800, this might as well have been some kind of twisted decoration or some wired prop, though, as torture was not that common in the period (unfortunately that changed again later).

The most recent version features a TCS (Torture Control System) that automatically adjusts the penetration depth of the eye screws by analyzing multiple pain sensors seamlessly embedded in the inside surface. It also can be customized with several attachments, such as the Open Wide® oral release mechanism that forces the mouth open at random intervals to introduce your choice of carnivorous beetles, fire ants, 5-day-old prawns, or spiders.

Kemper murdered a 15-year-old girl, as well as his own mother and her best friend, from May 1972 to April 1973. He spent years studying human behavior. First at the mental hospital he was in after killing his grandparents, and then before his killing streak, he gave many girls rides trying to learn how to be charming despite his large intimidating size. Apparently he is quite charming, which is terrifying.

You'll also get this problem if you have an older illuminated lightswitch, or if you are using a remotely-operated switch that was designed for incandescent lamps. When used with incandescent lamps you would never notice the bleed current because it wasn't sufficient to cause the filament to glow. LED lamps are so efficient that just a teeny tiny bit of current will cause them to glow. Similarly, you can experience random flickers with CFL lamps as the strike capacitor slowly charges up and the lamp blinks when the voltage gets high enough. I ran into this problem when installing LED lamps into sockets connected to X10 lamp modules.

They literally have no space to move! The whole situation in El Salvador is quite sad really. Many of the people being arrested for being in gangs are no longer active gang members and haven't been for years. They're targeted because of their old ink and are incarcerated purely for having gang tattoos with no evidence of any crimes. I have a friend who fled to Spain and is seeking asylum because he was in a gang as a teenager there but left when he turned 20 and got his life clean. He's almost 50 now and has been a law abiding citizen all these years. Even when he was in the gang he didn't do anything violent towards anyone.

Not common in Australia, we had proper plumbing, straight from the bottom of the table into a drainage system in the floor. When embalming you have to massage the blood out of the body to make way for the embalming fluid. Other times you’re just washing the bodies, before dressing them for a viewing.

I'm not sure if this is common in the UK, but from what I've seen, it's usually either the table over the end of the embalming sink, or the tables with the sinks/hose built in and drainage straight into a system in the floor. But hey, if this works...

I worked at a crematory that offered un-embalmed viewings for family members who couldn't afford the embalming process. I would set the facial features of the deceased and often used these eye caps. They are meant to go under the eyelids (like large contacts). Then, I would maneuver the eyelid over the caps; the scoring would grip the soft tissue inside the eyelid and assist in keeping the eyes closed.

That was kind of you. Before my dad was cremated, we requested to see him and they didn't use these. My grandmother kept trying to close my dad's eyes like you see on the movies. I finally had to tell her that it doesn't work that way and his eyes weren't going to close and stay closed. I mean the look my dad had was kinda horrific. They didn't even try.

Why would a deep sea fish need such big eyes given its dark that deep?

This fish has normal eyes when it's deep below the surface. That's tissue damage from rapid pressure change.

That's a very good reason not to buy a new one, but there's no sense in discarding an instrument which already exists. I abhor fur, but I own a fur coat. It was bought by my great grandmother 90 years ago. Throwing it away wouldn't have any effect on the current state of things.

Marble, though once popular for bathroom accessories and interiors, is not an ideal choice for making a room look clean. In other words: this MAY look worse than it is - though that mirror desperately needs some work.

Looks fake or deliberate to me. Like, look at the reflection. The rest of the bathroom is spotless. And parts of the walls look marbled, not dirty.

    M O'Connell

The mirror isn't dirty. The large marble tiles have trapped moisture behind them, that moisture is causing the metallic layer of the mirror to corrode behind the glass. Mirrors have a deposited layer of metal on the back side which is then protected by a layer of paint. If the paint is compromised the mirror surface will oxidize.
