In the age of AI and reality-manipulating technology, computer and internet literacy is a must. Critical thinking and a healthy dash of skepticism also helps.

But not everything online is necessarily fake news or AI’s attempt at breaking free from its technological shackles to try to take over the world. Nope, sometimes it is much simpler than that. Think confusing perspective, perfect timing, and other lucky kinds of photo shots.

You see, on rare occasions, when the photo lens meets that one split second coupled up with that one particular angle, you have photo-ops like the ones featured below—pictures that bend the mind and require a double-take (or twelve) to actually make sense of things. And if you don’t know just how lit that is, read on!

If you’ve been on the internet for long enough, you’ll very likely be aware of what confusing perspective is. As a phenomenon, it’s quite literally what it sounds like—pictures of things that are placed in ways that make it look like it’s other things. We know this description leaves much to be desired, but it’s what it’s.

"Vancouver, Vancouver, this is it!" Last words of David Johnston as Mt. St. Helens erupted and killed him on his observation spot on a ridge to the north of the mountain (which by the way, was considered a safe area. There were no warnings that the bulge that had grown over several months on the side of the mountain was going to blow).

The tl;dr version is that the brain is a blind blob of neurons and has to rely on the eyes for guidance, but the brain has to use its own imagination anyway.

But if we were to look into it in more detail, the brain is all about interpretation and nothing about perception. Since it doesn’t have eyes, ears or any of the other senses in and of itself, it relies on the appropriate sensory organs to tell it what’s what.

And this is where the fun begins because the brain doesn’t necessarily understand everything that these organs tell it. And so it has to resort to filling in the gaps.

IDK why, but midwesterners on Reddit are saying that if you see a "green" storm, it means a tornado or REALLY bad storm is coming D: EDIT: ahhh, it's light particle refraction: "Water/ice particles in storm clouds with substantial depth and water content will primarily scatter blue light," officials at the NWS office in Hastings, Nebraska stated. "When the reddish light scattered by the atmosphere illuminates the blue water/ice droplets in the cloud, they will appear to glow green."

I agree, with minor modifications. I think the glow actually comes from low intensity and constant cloud to cloud lightning. We call it an "evil green" and it means that a humongous storm is on the way. Where I live that does not mean a tornado, it means hailstones the size of cricket balls.

As eerie as the fog that accumulates around the top of the Transamerica building. San Francisco just isn't happening without the fog.

The filling in of the gaps is in part due to the fact that the sensory faculties use simple language to describe things to the brain. We shouldn’t expect an eye to know Shakespearean, right? So, the brain makes due with what it gets, but pulls its weight around by adding more details to things to the best of its knowledge.

A perfect example of this is peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is essentially side vision—everything that is to the extreme side, off the center of our visual focus. The way our eyes work don’t really allow as much peripheral vision as we can actually sense when we look at things. But the brain expands upon the field of view by assuming the things and projecting an image for us.

So, circling back at the issue of how illusions work—images with ambiguous representations confuse the brain, abusing its superpower of filling in the gaps, but the brain fails to do so correctly. Remember, it tries to guesstimate visuals and make sense of them, and it can be wrong about it. This is why some illusions get trippy in our eyes.

An inverted mirage is an optical phenomenon that occurs when light rays pass through layers of air at different temperatures. When light travels from a cooler layer to a warmer one, it bends towards the warmer, less dense air. This bending of light, known as refraction, can cause images of real objects to appear in the wrong place. For example, on a hot day, the air near the ground is warmer than the air above it. Light from the sky bends as it passes through these layers and can create an image of the sky on the ground. This can often look like a pool of water on a road, which is actually an inverted image of the sky

Due to these deficiencies in how our brain works, we can also only see one side of a picture. My Wife and My Mother-in-Law is a great example of this. It’s the famous picture in which some folks only see a young woman facing away or an elderly woman facing to the side. Some folks can see both, some only see one of them. But it’s fun stuff, right?

Why does any of it matter? Besides proving to be quite a fun distraction in life, it has opened up a vast sea of opportunity for research. You see, some illusions are based on brightness and apparent motion.

This alone has led to a better understanding of how our brain works by putting together several separate processing streams across multiple processing stages to make sense of things. This alone is proof of what kind of a powerhouse the human brain is. And if that doesn’t sound absolutely amazing, we don’t know what is then.

This always blows up my mind. In my childhood house we had a dark hallway leading to the main gate. There was a .5cm hole on the door and you could see people, cars, and everything outside upside down reflected on the wall below. It was the first cinematic experience I ever had.

The "javelin" on his face is actually a shadow. You can see it if you zoom in/look at the original post on Reddit. I had a hard time believing the explanation until I zoomed in to like 175% XD It's the shadow from the javelin's shaft coming from BEHIND his head.

It's a normal incline. What's odd is that the supports are all from below, and the way it suddenly turns in the direction of the photographer, and the zoom lens so you see no perspective of the top looking further than the bottom.

There's videos of people driving on it and looking back at it from street view. It's not as steep as it looks like in these angles. Still steep but not THAT steep.

This is the result of long optical zoom lens image compression. The more the zoom the less evident distance is, making everything look much closer. Rolling hills become sheer drop offs. That's how they get pics of a huge moon or sun on the horizon.

thank you! It took me a while to understand and then I remembered that when I’m driving going downhill on a highway and there’s. Steep uphill in the distant it looks soooo steep. Then as I approach it it flattens out and then when I go up it it barely feels like much is happening. So that helped me make sense of the comparison of the two photos.

Someone on Reddit offered the explanation: "As air rises it can condense moisture in the shape of the rising air, in this case the rising air was a perfect square (likely due to a man made structure or area) forming a cloud in the same shape Note: this is a massive oversimplification and there’s likely many other factors at play leading to the square with condensing air being the main player"

The white Dove is standing at the end of a narrow wall which projects out from the POV building perpendicular to the window, which visually blends with the roadway behind it. What looks like a curb to the left of the black car is the top of the wall. There's a full lane width empty between the left side of the black car, and the wall.

The reason this looks odd is because the subject is standing in a shady area, the waterfall behind is in full sun, the camera flash lit up the subject and didn't affect the waterfall. Our brains see the shadows behind the guy and then see him with obviously artificial lighting in what should be a natural light setting and we know something is wrong!

From Reddit: "My guess is they are looking through a window at a river. The window is picking up a refraction of the lot below them somewhere. Seeing both makes it as if the lot is in the river." - "Look at the bridge. You can see the pylons and bridge deck in the water's reflection but everything below that is sky. Now, put a plate of glass between you and the river twisted to the right and tilted down so that you see a reflection of what is below you and far to your right. And because both images are about the same distance away from you, your mind blends them together!"

It's funny how you can sometimes immediately see that a picture is taken in your country, even if you don't know that specific place. I immediately knew this was the Netherlands, it is soooo typically Dutch (apart from the angle of the trees, that is weird) and so did my boyfriend. But why? I have no idea what specific things in the picture make it Dutch, but I just know that it is. Such a weird phenomenon.

BTW, artificial turf can get SCORCHINGLY HOT in the sun. WAY hotter than grass or even asphalt. We have artificial turf front "lawns" at home, and I've used a temperature gun on them during the height of summer. They're usually at least 110F (43C), and the hottest I've clocked them at is 127F (53C). So, be careful with your pets and children on artificial turf on sunny days. It's hotter than you might think!

Ironically, this building is ALSO in Chicago, IL (see the other post in this article with the triangular building.) This building isn't triangular, but looks that way from this photo's angle XD (This building is located at 151 N Franklin St, Chicago, IL)

How many birds have died crashing into the building?

I think I might have worked for this guy. But I'd have to hear him lie first to be sure.

I think she's flexible and scratching her own back. I used to be able to do this before I got old and stiff.

I don't think it is possible to scratch your back like that. Try it.

Not really though. The shadows on the wood work and behind the slats are immediately perceived

Some artificial or reflected light may have cured this. And another object present may have enhanced that as well.

    nice bed frame, though. I need to get a double bed like that, with the drawers underneath (at both sides) to stop my damn cat hiding under the bed to throw up because I know its not her fault but moving a double bed and matress every time to clean up is too much work ;-;

OMFG This end up! I had a very similar bed, the office desk, the couch (with the table that went on the arm) and my dad had the recliner. That couch was amazing, take the back cushions off and it was big enough for two people to comfortably lay down and snuggle up on.
