Maybe you’ve been feeling it lately, too—that aching longing for a simpler, (arguably) better time from your childhood. There is something deeply magical about remembering what things used to be like. And it’s enjoyable to think back to the good old days for a few moments, even if you know you’re viewing everything through rose-colored glasses.

The ‘Retrogeist’ Instagram page rides that retro wave in a very fun way. The curators of the project share nostalgic pics from the 1980s and 1990s, as well as memes about what it’s like to be an adult who’s missing those decades, and we’ve collected the best ones. Check out the most interesting pics and remember to upvote your fave ones as you keep scrolling. But be warned, the nostalgia gets pretty heavy and you might get the urge to buy a time machine!

Bored Panda reached out to the friendly founder and curator of Retrogeist, a self-proclaimed nostalgia buff, and they were kind enough to tell us all about the inspiration behind the project and its vast appeal to the internet crowd.

The fact that you said "child in a car alone" totally authenticates this. I remember staying in the car when my mom went shopping. The freedom of blasting FM radio as loud as I wanted while sitting in the driver's seat... No way that would fly today.

Pushing the lighter in until it was hot enough and it popped out. Picking it up and staring at the orange glow until it fades if it was night, pushing it back in, waiting for it to pop again, etc.

"I was always a nostalgia buff, acting as a sort of human archive for my friends. I used to text them memes, music videos, and other fun content from the '80s/'90s, our childhood and teenage years," the founder of Retrogeist told Bored Panda about the roots of the project. "When Instagram started to gain popularity, I figured it could be a great platform to post all of this content, without driving my friends nuts with constant messaging. After a while, I had more followers than friends!"

We were curious to get the founder's thoughts on why nostalgia is such a big hit on the internet. "Kids who grew up in the '80s and '90s were the first generation to really enjoy the proliferation of entertainment mediums. Some of these channels were new experiences—the personal computer/home video game consoles; the GameBoy, a handheld gaming device; or a portable music player like the Walkman," they explained to us via email.

The first modems were acoustic couplers that you had to physically put the phone handset onto. Sneeze loud enough near one and it would hang up.

Otherwise known as the Windows random number generator. The estimated time was based on the current momentary transfer rate, whereas the transfer rate box showed the average rate. A 180MB file would take a little over 9 hours to download over a 56K modem at maximum rate. The problem is that the rate would often drop to a few bytes a second giving rise to these nonsense time left figures.

Originally phone cables (twisted pair) were used to carry data. The problem is they were not designed for data but for voice. Cables had to be changed to coaxial and eventually fiber optic cables to speed things up.

In the 80s I kept telling my cousin that I thought Christopher Lloyd was so hot. She thought I was dumb. Well I meant Christopher Lambert from Highlander. Which is goofy because I was a big Taxi fan and Queen fan so I knew most of the names. Christopher Lloyd is still a great actor, just not as sexy as Sean Connery and Lambert were.

"We also had huge, global summer blockbusters, such as Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. So you had all this cool, new stuff to grow up with! However, what you, as a kid or teenager, didn't have was the ability to capture your real-life experiences. Film was expensive. Polaroid—even more! Most people only have family photos from specific events—vacations, birthdays, etc. How many of us took a picture of a sleepover where we played Super Mario Bros. all night? Not to mention taking a selfie while waiting in line to see the Goonies premiere."

According to the founder of the page, "Retrogeist gives people a glimpse of their childhood/teen years, of events they most likely don't have any tangible, visual memory of. Given that, I often wonder if my 9-year-old son, who's growing up in an all-digital world, would have the same nostalgic feelings for this era when he's all grown up. Maybe the magic would be gone..."

The founder of Retrogeist said that nostalgia taps into a basic emotional need. "It can give people a sort of warm 'high,' mentally taking them back to a time they grasp as innocent and simple." However, some folks can get lost in that feeling. "People who are caught in today's ever-going rat race may get obsessed with that feeling. So just remember, kids—time is a one-way street!" they quipped.

First of all, YOU are not wrong here. The problem is this: in a democracy, we are expected to make an informed decision, based on things that at best relate to picking a winner in a popularity contest, not a position of genuine responsibility with a necessary skill-set in order to perform well. The so-called actual candidates are kissing babies and shaking hands, which likely has NOTHING significant or meaningful to do with the actual position being sought.

This is too funny because I told my husband last night that I would vote for Oprah or Samuel Jackson over Biden. I wouldn't trust him (or the orange guy) to pick out spinach at the store or explain The Declaration Of Independence. Time for grandpa to stay home and complain about the price of peanuts. I remember being in the 5th grade and MTV still actually played music! I'd record them on a VHS and still have the music videos today! I would jam out while getting ready at 5am. Unfortunately, that was just as the "reality" shows started to pick up, so after 6am the music stopped and the reality garbage started. I'd then switch channels to watch Charmed or Star Trek 😂

Like nearly everything on Planet Earth, nostalgia has both its upsides and downsides. Reliving positive memories and thinking about what things used to be like can energize you and give you the tenacity to push through tough times in the present. All of that optimism and motivation can be really helpful.

WebMD notes that nostalgia can even affect how we behave in the present. For example, people are more likely to exercise more if they’re optimistic about their physical health, based on their own experiences in the past. What’s more, nostalgia can push you to (re)connect with folks you cared about in the past and may even inspire you to embrace creativity.

I love how so many of them feature the retro "this is the future" graphics. The future, in the end, did not involve recording stuff onto blank VHS tapes.

Even more amazing was that most of these graphics were probably not done digitally. Those smooth 80s and 90s future spheres were done with airbrush on paper. I read a 1992 book on airbrushing that had some amazing tutorials and examples of graphics that could be made.

My grandmother used to record all the good movies from 'super channel' for myself and her other grand kids. I had peasant-vision (3 channels), so it was nice to have movies when nothing was on. She would also make us VHS's with different movies on them for our birthdays or holidays. When she passed away when I was 16, we found her 'library' that had well over 300 vhs tapes!! Brings back memories.

I had so many video tapes - all my favourite series! Even got friends in America to tape shows and post them to me via snail mail. I would use specific labels for specific shows (no matter the brand of the actual tape) and type the names of the shows on paper then stick them on the labels with glue and then hand-write the names of the episodes. When DVDs and digital shows came out things changed drastically!

I highly recommend to anyone who geeks out over this stuff to watch "Lights and Magic". It's the origin story of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and all the movie magicians at Industrial Lights and Magic, it's on Netflix. 🤯 The things they had to do to "get the shot" is fascinating!

This reminds me of a wedding photographer in my neighborhood who would use a tp roll on his cameras to single out the bride and groom and lay the shot over a stained glass window.

So in measured doses, missing the past can be just the boost that you need to get out of a slump. However, too much nostalgia might come back to bite you. If you’re constantly missing decades past, sincerely believing that the present doesn’t measure up at all, then you’re likely to reduce your quality of life. Not only that, you may become cynical and miss great opportunities because you’re longing for a different time.

It’s actually possible to start missing things far too soon. According to Harley Therapy, there’s a phenomenon called anticipatory nostalgia where people start missing things before they’re even over. And that can lead to lots of (unnecessary) anxiety, sadness, and worry. Anticipatory nostalgia can eventually morph into anxiety about the future.

Meanwhile, there’s a large difference between passive and active nostalgia. When people consciously make an effort to think about past events, this can help elevate their moods. However, the opposite is true for individuals that are reminded of the past randomly or unconsciously shift their focus to the good old days every single day.

Fuchur (that's his original name, as well book as movie), but because of pronounciation reasons in English, changed? It is NOT pronounced Fukur, but the "ch"-sound doesn't exist in English, so it is difficult to explain

We really need a remake that is way more true to the book by Michael Ende. The second movie barely resembles the second half of the book and the third movie was a complete disgrace

So question. I recently watched this movie for the first time (don’t ask why it’s my first time, I’m way behind in a lot of famous movies) but I honestly don’t see why people rant and rave about this. I mean it was definitely better than say, Friday the 13th, but it wasn’t that insanely good to me?

Can't get a radio station at the store I manage, so I have an old MP3 player hooked into the sound system. Playlist includes the themes from Airwolf, Knight Rider, MacGyver, and other 80's greats. Customers always get pumped when one of those comes on--they just don't make TV themes like that anymore.

Harley Therapy notes that some of the unhealthy thought patterns linked to nostalgia include rumination, when someone repetitively focuses on distressing thoughts, looking at all the possible little causes and consequences. Depressed individuals also tend to relive the past, judging themselves, feeling guilty, and hating themselves for what happened.

We went to the same high school. I sat behind her in freshman math. She was there for a few months, then she didn't really show up any more until graduation. Actually I think I saw her once during senior year. Someone was doing a story on her or something. They were doing a photo shoot with her and Michelle Trachtenberg (who joined as a freshman when I was a senior).

On the whole, people are nostalgic for those times in their lives when they felt happy, free, powerful, healthy, and had fewer responsibilities to deal with. In short, you’re very likely to want to go back to a time when you were full of optimism rather than stress. Often, that’s why folks are nostalgic for their childhoods. However, if they had an awful time growing up, they might feel drawn to a different decade—perhaps when they were teenagers or even young adults.

The boy on top’s hair is adorable. Overly styled for a kid but most don’t actually gel it everyday. The boy on the bottom is adorable but the haircut itself suggests the bowl slid a bit when mom was cutting it, then she tried to fix it, then she tried to fix her fix… now you somehow have both bangs and a visible forehead. He looks like a kid trying on someone’s hair piece.

This abomination was because 80s parents cut their kids hair themselves. They also removed baby teeth by tying one end of a piece of cotton to your tooth and the other end to a doorknob.. then slamming the door. 80s parents didn't bother with seatbelts. I remember my dad bent over the car engine fixing things himself with the sort of confident abandon that gave no indication to the fact that he didn't know what he was doing. My mother fed us red Vienna sausage. They let us drink water from a hosepipe. Play in the road with a stick and ball.

A lot of 80s movies were filmed in Astoria. Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit, Free W***y (90s I know), The Black Stallion, The Benji Movies. It's one of those towns you've seen a hundred times but never been to.

while answering a series of fan questions in a recent interview with the Guardian, Lundgren claimed to have no recollection of the incident. "I don’t know," he said. "[Stallone] keeps talking about it, so maybe he’s right. He did go to the hospital, but I don’t know whether it was my punches or the fact that he was so overworked as the director, actor and writer. We shot those 15 rounds over two or three weeks, eight or 12 hours a day, so you’re throwing thousands of punches. If you don’t connect, it looks a bit fake, but it doesn’t mean you want to hurt the other guy. But there were no hard feelings." Mens Health JAN 16, 2022 Phillip Ellis

I had one of these as a teenager and I was lucky enough to get my own phone line in my room, but I wasn't allowed to talk to boys. In order to talk to my boyfriend, we would schedule a time late at night that he would call me and I would sit with my hand hovered over the receiver so I could pick it up at the first possible sound so my parents wouldn't hear it.

I was that age. Actually McCully and I are only a few months apart but when the subject came up, my parents told me those shoes were like $150 a pair and even when I was as old as Mac is in this picture I was like WTF? that's too much money for a pair of shoes. I could get an NES with a gold copy of Zelda for that back in those days for that money.

There's was quite a bit of controversy surrounding Olivia D'Abo (Princess Jehnna) at the time Conan, and the Bo Derek film "Bolero" , were released in 1984. as she was only 14 during production on both films, and appeared scantily clad in the former, and nude in the latter.

Funny, I was JUST reading about the early 90s TMNT live-action movies. The turtles were real actors in costumes designed by Jim Henson's studio, not long before he passed. The body movement was from the actor inside (different from the actors who dubbed the voices over) but they were also equipped with hi-tech (at the time) remotely controlled facial movements from computers that programmed in various expressions. But in the end, there was someone inside of that thing and emulating the reaction of the turtle, or the other way around?

True Stoey my late fiancé Dave Young when he was in the Navy …he was a like an optometry tech ? Anyway, he touched Tom Cruise’s face to measure him for a fit for shades. Anyway, Dave wanted to say hey Mr Cruise love your films…but his handler was there and said…”Nobody talks to Mr. Cruise”. And Tom just sat there just like an arrogant douche ! Couldn’t believe it ! So this whole…stardom affected him late in life ? No ! After Risky Business…he became a total douche canoe !!! And That is what Dave said and we never watched any of his movies again. Lol

Yesterday I watched a Friends episode dubbed in German. It was so horribly dubbed, all the jokes were lost, every character felt dumb, that I wonder how it could ever have garnered a fan community in Germany. I had to stop watching after a few minutes.

I always like Posh Spice but my bff at the time kept telling me she was "boring and snobby". I liked Ginger Spice, sort of. Baby spice was too sweet at times but I liked her. I felt Sporty spice was the most serious out of the bunch. I liked Scary spice's energy and I think I relate to her more now than I realized back then.

Other kid's toys were always cooler than the ones you got at home. Then your friends get all pissed off because they don't want you playing with them.

I still like Arnold. He's never gone back on anything he's said (and he said some strange stuff when he was young) and he at least had the guts to admit right away about his son out of wedlock. Yes, he cheated on his wife. But he didn't lie about it or put the blame on anyone else.

Not really. I've worked in offices with a lot more than that, though the best one has to be an office in Switzerland above a railway station. When a train went through, all the monitors flickered due to electromagnetic interference!

In the days of CRT monitors (whether PC or 'dumb terminals'), we used to ask clients 'how's your air-conditioning?'. Because one of those things, especially a dumb terminal (i'm looking at you IBM 3277/3278) could put out as much heat as three humans.
