For small businesses these days, it’s all about customer reviews. It doesn't matter how slick of a marketing campaign you have or how much you invest in advertising and hosting grand events; it can all come hideously undone with a couple of unhappy customers who decide to tell the world about it.

However, it needn’t be the end of the world. Sometimes, if the negative feedback is genuine, a humble apology and promise to fix the issue can show honesty and willingness to listen, which many potential customers can appreciate.

Alternatively, if the complaint is malicious and false, a witty comeback and a withering response can also win fans. You might even go viral and get a ton of free exposure!

Guessing math isn't your best subject? It was 30 min and to be honest, being a huge fan of seafood, I would want it to take more than 5 minutes for my mussels to arrive. Did you not read where in the reply they stated it was BUSY?!?!? That means a little bit longer wait. I would have no problem with this at all!!

Ordered at 14:19 and appetizers arrive at 14:58, 39 minutes later. The lies are terrible, these is a terrible person who wrote the review, but 39 minutes to get appetizers is too long.

Do Restaurants Care About Reviews?

“You don’t define your brand. Your customers do,” is a common saying among customer service experts. And it’s true. Customer reviews have become so important to people that 90% of consumers read online reviews before visiting a business, as per Invesp. And 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. That’s a lot! So restaurants don’t just care about the reviews; they need them.

How Much Does a Bad Review Cost a Restaurant?

You need visible reviews for potential customers to check out, but they must be good ones. If you get a bad review, it can be soul-destroying; you pour your heart and soul into your business only to tarnish it by a customer who might simply be in a bad mood, didn’t like the restaurant’s food, or had unrealistic expectations.

Businesses are at risk of losing consumers who would have bought from them if there hadn’t been a negative review, as per Zen Business. Negative reviews can turn as much as 86% of customers away. You simply can't ignore difficult customers, no matter how unfair it might seem.

They said their table was given away, not that they left. Very likely they are mad because they had to wait to be seated. Empty tables do not mean they are free for customers to use. They can be reserved, or just not enough servers available. Hence the wait. But... if lobster isn't served....

Why Do Customers Leave Bad Restaurant Reviews?

According to Social Media Today, 13.5% of customers say they post fake reviews or negative reviews out of vengeance, so chances are, they aren’t out to get you personally. 89.7% of people who complain want to get a response from you, which suggests that they are giving you the opportunity to make things right.

73.2% of people who complain hope to save others from having the same experience as they did. So, if you are helpful and make an effort to reply in a courteous way, you can use bad reviews for restaurants to show that you are willing to adapt to customer needs and demands.

I was a bartender for a long time. Luckily the internet didn’t have places for fools like this. I (and everyone else) always had customers lying about us. I almost got suspended because someone called the main office and said I flipped him off and wouldn’t serve him. I had a bandaged middle finger from a work related accident and walked around with my hand elevated as much as possible. Everyone who worked with me and the regulars luckily had my back because they were the ones joking that I was flipping them off. We just assumed it was a guy I turned down. That happens to men and women a lot in the service business.

I definitely wouldn't recommend AA to deal with actual problems. They have a convoluted, religious process where they try to convince you to have God solve your problems. Seriously, look up their 12 steps, it's bizarre that people don't call them out on it more often. I'd recommend a secular alternative like SMART Recovery.

It is not against the law to have a drunk in the restaurant, it IS against the law to serve more alcohol to someone who is obviously intoxicated to the point that they cant even balance on their own. As long as she was not disrespectful or belligerent, there really was no reason to "throw her out"...there WAS a very good reason, however, to not serve her any more drinks.

Its a shame that AA is the only help available to many addicts. It has its good points, but then again, it is basically a cult, which seeks to disempower people, and get you addicted to 'the rooms.'

Can a Restaurant Sue You for a Bad Review?

During an interview with CNBC, Attorney Evan Mascagni said, “Most Americans don’t realize they can be sued for writing an online review. With the rise of user-generated [review] content sites like Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google, we’ve really seen a shift where folks are being sued for their speech online.”

As you saw in these bad restaurant review examples, it was apparent that the reviews were false. Our advice would be to avoid writing such fake reviews, or you might face a heavy fine from the restaurant.

Clients and patrons always ask "Do you mind? Is it okay?" and the natural inclination is to answer "sure." But once in a while the patron will take advantage of this kindness for all it's worth and you want to back out of being kind. eh...sounds like the restaurant was in the wrong here. 3 hours isn't terribly long and they probably should have ordered more...hell, I'd have been annoyed but I wouldn't have asked them to leave unless it was busy. I don't know, this is a tough one. I think they're just both being d***s maybe...

I am all for owners responding to people leaving bad reviews, but at some point it might hurt them in the end to leave reviews that are kind of mean spirited. Maybe Not, just a thought.

If the ex-waiter would love his job, he would leave the list of "things that could be improved" on the table so that both parts of the FINE story could come out. Apparently complaints on both sides ... That should not be made public ... by the way, he has unmasked himself, because he has watched and improved nothing while being hired.

I doubt it. I do think theres perhaps a negative perception of natives in these regions which I'm supposing concerns crime and this has extended to immediate suspicion, in this case, of hospitality workers, when something goes missing/wrong.

I..have so many questions. Can someone please explain to someone not fluent in cakeshop vocab what happened here? Where do you get to take cupcakes off walls? What is a wall case? What is meant by topper (the frosting?)? I now have the mental image of someone licking frosting off a cupcake only to stick the remains to a wall, that cannot be the case, right?

I am also very confused by this as I have never seen cupcakes on a wall where the customers can access them. Unless already packaged, cakes are usually behind a counter manned by someone, in my experience. I figured that the topper was something on top of it, maybe icing, maybe something like a cake topper (but that usually wouldn't be licked...) but I've never heard this terminology before.

I've worked in restaurants. I hate it when people come in right before closing and complain when things take a while. Cooks don't prep more food right before they close! The kitchen staff has already put stuff away and they have to get everything out again just to make your dish. They might have already started cleaning the grill/stove when you decided to waltz in there 10 minutes before closing. Everyone is cleaning up and getting ready to leave and then you show up. They are tired and they want to go home, so they hate you for making them stay late. Duh!

Good explanation! When I've been somewhere that's really close to closing - i've ASKED if it's ok - and have been told what is available. If you are decent to your servors- they will be to you,. And I've ALWAYS eaten reasonably quickly and left a large tip, I've been on wait-staff - I know how it is.

I'm sorry...30 of the funniest restaurant comebacks to negative reviews? Umm....how is a 4 star review that complimented the ambience and staff and how much they loved the dish a negative review? The only "negative" thing they said here was that the dishes are a little costly but then went on to say they are worth ordering. This isn't a negative review...it's probably a review for the wrong place. To put my objection more clearly; this is SUPPOSED to be a list of negative reviews. That doesn't really belong on this list as per the Title of the list.

A buratta isn't a cheese is it, it's made from mozzarella on outside, some other cheese and cream on inside.... I don't think it's easy to make mozzarella in a restaurant, wonder what else the owner is exaggerating, customer reviews can be bare faced lies, but think about it, so can the owners reply.. the attacking pallet and you can't tell one cheese from the other insult is funny, he knew it wasn't goats cheese. Gruyere omelette does sound nice though.

It' s actualyl kind of funny to see all those Englsih language reviews complaining about bad service in Berlin restaurants. tehy are kind of right - by American standards service in germany is terrible. But noone gives a f*ck. And so you have all these one or two star reviews by tourists and people still go there.

I bet the spouse/partner left the tip. I've been out to eat with dates that complained about everything (even though everything was perfect, in my opinion), and then they announced that they were not leaving a tip because of the "crappy" service. I left a big tip and then never dated that person again.

Dairy allergy and orders PESTO?!?! Real pesto has Parmesan IN it. Why order it at ALL if you have an allergy? This just tells me that they were absolutely informed about the pea purée, or they're just dumb.

She ordered "whatever was dairy free" and then called it pesto in her review. The response from the owner states it was pesto but spring pea purée

Who the F takes Imodium for lactose intolerance?? People who are actually lactose intolerant carry and use Lactaid, my GF never leaves the house w/o it. 3 Imodiums and you wouldn’t poo for a week, lol.

I was thinking that too. I used to have lactose intolerance pretty badly (luckily, it has lessened over the years). I would never take Imodium for that. Your body can't process lactic acid, so you need to let it pass on through, not hold it in. I use Lactaid too; awesome stuff!

Me: Whats the point of listening to you of you cant even spell 'allergy' right? (And also, i think you have lactose intolerance not dairy allergy cause the the allergy has much more severe symptoms cause they can lead you to the hospital)

I know few people who have problems with milk but not with parmesan or other very hard cheeses, because of the level of fermentation. Not sure if it applies to ecerybody.

B******t no one is that intolerant to dairy, besides the gastrointestinal stress he's on about is farting and gas. Big deal! Also Imodium isn't for dairy, there are specific dairy pills you can take over the counter to ease your body into dairy, it works better than an anti-diarrhoea Med too like this numpty too. It's like taking aspirin to help your hay fever ?!

Sounds like they're both jerks. If there's roaches in your restaurant, you should take responsibility for it and not be belligerent. Everything in your restaurant is your responsibility.

    Dealing with False Complaints

The witty comebacks from the restaurant owners were really something! If you ever think about posting a false review, think twice. Or rather, don’t think about it at all! Which witty comeback did you like the most? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments. Also, share this with someone you know who has posted fake reviews. Let them know how badly it can come back to them!
