50 Clever Signs Spotted In Public That Deserved To Be Photographed (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertHave you ever wondered what civilization would be like without signs? Without diamond-shaped boards that warn us to give way or brightly colored banners informing us about the meal deal of our lifetime? My best guess would probably be chaos. In fact, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now, as language is an intricate system made up of many signs and symbols.
Indeed, the world would be very different than it is today if it weren’t for cavemen and cavewomen and their primitive drawings 20,000 years ago. To rekindle our appreciation for signs and everything they represent in our society, Bored Panda has gathered a list of some of the most genius and interesting ones down below. Be sure to upvote the placards that perhaps taught you something new, and don’t forget to share the coolest ones you have come across, dear Pandas!
While you're at it, make sure to check out a conversation with Bryant Gillespie, designer and founder of Better Sign Shop, a growth platform for sign and print shops, who kindly agreed to answer a few questions all about signs.

This Sign On The Way From Islamabad To Nathia Gali, Pakistan
Humans too, only we hide it better. Do you think your s**t and pee magically disappear when you flush the toilet?

Load More Replies...Learned that in boy scouts 4 decades ago. We choose what we keep as words to live by, and this would be a few of them. Clever yes! New concept, not by a long shot.True people of the outdoors had this understood long before it became a slogan.
Don't worry. We are destroying ourselves at full speed.
Load More Replies...To learn more about signs and how they're made, we reached out to Bryant Gillespie, designer, and founder of Better Sign Shop, a growth platform for sign and print shops.
He told us that what inspired him to pursue a career in sign-making was a combination of love for design, solving challenges, and tinkering. "I’ve always been fascinated by how signs can influence behavior and convey important information quickly and effectively.
I also just kind of fell into it after moving to a different part of the country. Being able to apply many different disciplines—design, printing, construction/fabrication, electrical – along with the creativity involved appeals to a lot of us sign geeks."
Cassowary Warning Signs In Far North Queensland
I don't need the sign. That bird is huge and rude, and even looks like it is dangerous. No, I don't want to take photos with it. I guess the sign is needed for people with only one braincell. I hope they can read the sign.
Go cassowaries. The world will not miss the stupid.
Load More Replies...Only approach a cassowary if it's baked in a cassorole. But even then be wary.
That bird can disembowl you with one kick. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I love to hand-feed cassowaries, they are the gentlest birds imaginable. Gentler than emu, ostrich, duck, goose, pigeon, sparrow, seagull, brolga, etc. They only hate people who corner them and poke them with a stick. They look threatening but are really great big softies.
Exactly what are you on when these peaceful cassowaries are around you?
Load More Replies...Cassowaries are really dangerous. Their feet are like dinosaur feet and they aim for your belly when they kick, slicing it open. When meeting a cassowary, wear a backpack backwards and you're a bit protected.
Wouldn’t that be wear a backpack forwards? I’m so confused
Load More Replies..."The sign-making process typically starts with understanding the client's needs and the message they want to convey," he explains. "This is followed by brainstorming and sketching design ideas. Once a concept is chosen, we move on to digital design, selecting materials, and finally, production.
To attract attention, signs should have a clear message, bold colors, and readable fonts. To educate, they should be informative yet concise. To amuse, incorporating humor or clever visuals can be very effective."
Singapore Has Nearly 700 Dementia Go-To-Points, Where People Appearing Lost Can Be Helped To Identify Themselves And Find Their Way Home
That is a wonderful service. If you've ever had to search for someone who has wandered off, you can appreciate this.
In a friend's village an elderly man with dementia disappeared just before the pandemic. It's a really "friendly" area, no caves, no deep lakes, no cliffs... just pastures, orchards and small groups of trees. He went for a walk one day after lunch... he was never seen again, dead or alive.
Load More Replies...This is a very smart idea and should be adopted in more countries.
This is literally the coolest thing I've ever seen. In my country, dementia is some sort of forbidden word.
Please enquire if the lost person is a tourist before bringing them here.
Gillespie believes that signs absolutely play a crucial role in our society. "They guide us, inform us, and sometimes even entertain us. From road signs that ensure our safety to informational signs that help us navigate spaces, their impact is significant. They also serve as powerful tools for branding and marketing, helping businesses attract customers and communicate their values."
My Local Brewery Had This Sign And Beer For Dads No Longer With Us
"This seat & beer are for the dads that are not with us today..."
So, Who drinks that Beer? Surely it doesn't just sit there, going flat and room-temperature, until it dries up and is cleared away at closing time? So sad.
Uh— the headline is misleading. “No longer with us” implies the dads are dead; “dads that are not with us today” does not.
I get what you say, but it seems quite unlikely they'd put down a beer for the dads who couldn't make it to the bar just that day.
Load More Replies...The earliest signs created by humans, as far as historians can tell, date back to the Stone Age, 18,000 BC. Our ancestors drew symbols on cave walls to visually express that they had products for trade or barter.
Some experts call this symbolic advertising to other tribes, with visualizations of hunted wild animals, pots, and arrows dating back 40,000 to 45,000 years.
Let's Help Frogs Live Their Best Lives
It's a big thing in the UK. Every March many, many Common Toads return to their breeding grounds and get squished on the roads. Local groups save hundreds of thousands of them by simply carrying them across the road. We have Toad tunnels too.
My mother turned a broken pot into a toad hotel last week (after I'd seen them in an article on BP) within a couple of days she found a toad in it.
Definitely not a US sign. Ours would just read "Migrating Toads: Please engage 4WD on your oversized gas-guzzling trucks you only drive on flat pavement and never tow anything."
One night in Brisbane Queensland back in the 70s, there was a cane toad migration that was crossing the road. Everyone just drove over them, justifying it because they are not a native species and are completely out of control, and 2) they are poisonous. Every year there you would read about kids in hospital because they didn't know. Still, the squish-pop-squish as hard to take. I think we found an alternate route.
My friend and I do this every spring carrying frogs across the road.
It Feels Like This Is To Tell People To Get Their Horses To Slow Down
It's a stop sign for armish carriages, not for humans.... but whilst visiting their town, please respect their NEIGH-bours and NEIGH-BOURHOODS lol 😆 And avoid HORSING around. Thank you for your visit 😊
In early civilization, about 800–500 BC, craftspeople in Ancient Egypt painted and carved symbols on terracotta, stone, brick, and wood to advertise their services and stand out from others. Typically, they would be found in marketplaces, temples, and other public spaces. Later, they were discovered in the ruins of Pompeii and other cities.
Meanwhile, the Ancient Greeks used signs to communicate with citizens who couldn’t read. Many of them remain to this day, like the staff of Hermes, which often hangs on the corners of pharmacies, or the goddess Demeter, who symbolizes grain, bread, and harvest. In the Roman Empire, widely used signs were made from wood, brick, stone, and marble.
This Underwater Wet Floor Sign
I'm seeing and hearing more and more people confusing "floor" and "ground" nowadays, such as cops shouting "On the floor! Now!" when they're clearly outside. It seem to be more prevalent in the UK but I've encountered US and Canadian examples too.

In Librarian School, there's a whole course dedicated to evil power-hungry ants.
Things gained momentum in medieval Europe about 1000 AD–1700. This was influenced by the economic and cultural revival that opened new trade opportunities. Craftsmen began using unique, identifiable signs to differentiate themselves to customers. Business owners would hang the emblems on poles. They were more popular than letters, as the majority of the population was illiterate.

Not just in Istanbul. It's common across the country and one of the reasons why we have so many strays.

Also kudos to the employee who made the sign, I can really feel their seething rage in the font choices

So after a couple times (and looks from the Check in desk) I would go up and point to the sign and say: This sign reads please do not drop the weights (enunciating like they don't know how to read) AND add, if necessary call for help and I (almost 60 female) can assist you in lowering them and helping you acquire less heavy weights. HAHAHAHA
It’s very difficult to lose weight. Cuddly people who are trying to be less cuddly have a difficult enough time as it is without jerks like you insulting them. It’s not their fault the gym is there. Get another job twat.

I don’t think that’s in NY state. The speed limit sign is in kilometres, so it must be in Canada.
So, I started reading about a group not mentioned in this article - those who were once called "Eskimos". Using “Eskimo” today is considered pejorative or derogatory simply because “eater of raw meat” is not how Inuit choose to refer to themselves, and they never did. The word is an exonym—a name given to a group by another group—and its continued use can perpetuate harmful stereotypes. To my way of thinking, humans are similar to dogs, in that there are so many variations. All dogs are dogs, all people are humans. Speaking totally scientifically.
I use Native Americans/or tribal name, if I know it. Indians are people from India. Indigenous comes from the Latin word indigena, which means “sprung from the land; native.” Therefore, using “Indigenous” over “Aboriginal” reinforces land claims and encourages territory acknowledgements, a practice which links Indigenous Peoples to their land and respects their claims over it. Also, the term Aborigine has acquired a negative connotation over the years (because of White people.) Indians are people from India. Native Americans is accepted, even better if you know the tribe, is to use that name. Points for using the correct pronunciation per the tribes language.
My Local Hospital Has Examples Of When You May Need An Urgent Care vs. An ER
Here in NC if you have a cat or dog bite you have to go the ER so you can get the first rabies shot and then to Urgent Care for the rest of the rabies shots. Animal control in the county the animal is in is called so they can go to the owners house or if it's a stray to pick it. Up.
That's insane, not all animals are rabid. NC has some of the weirdest laws.
Load More Replies...I was bit by a cat and ended up in the hospital for a week. A cat's mouth is full of bacteria.
Everything's mouth is. Humans are disgusting, mouth-wise. Sleeping seals too, as it happens. Komodo dragons weaponise their oral bacteria and let them kill off prey rather than having to chase down dinner.
Load More Replies...Getting bitten by a cat, particularly a feral one, will nearly always result in an infection which may sometimes develop into life-threatening septicaemia. Edit: yes, I wasn't suggesting you should go to the ER with it.
That's fantastic. I want to buy a life guide from this genius! And I'll pay the extra for the illustrated edition.
The barber pole that many men's hair salons use also originated from medieval times, when barbers were not only cutting hair but also extracting teeth and performing surgeries. Such services were provided for poorer people who couldn’t afford to go to a physician.

I saw one that said "No college scholarships will be handed out today"
The signs I've seen have number 5, usually something like: Your child is not being scouted by the Yankees/This is not the Stanley Cup Finals/This is not Major League Baseball.
A friend of mine umpired Little League games when his children played, and he made a mother leave the game once because she just wouldn't stop yelling. A few minutes later her husband approached him, and he was concerned that the husband might be angry about it, but to his surprise the husband thanked him instead.
5 - no karen the concessions aren't free because your son is in the game
This sign should be at kids rugby games, football games, even netball games. All games actually.
The red color represents drawing blood to cure diseases or infections. White symbolizes a stick that a person would hold to make the veins more prominent during the procedure so they would be easier to find. As for the blue stripe, some attribute it to the colors of the American flag, while in Europe it may have differentiated barbers from doctors.

This Sign For Temporary Fencing To Protect Birds
So shadberry gets them high or drunk. No wonder they come back every year..
There is a species that migrates through Austin, TX during the time of year when a local wild berry is ripe. They eat the partially fermented fruit, get drunk and fly into the windows knocking themselves unconscious. Our security guards watch for them and move the stunned birds out of sight so they can sober up in private and avoid the embarrassing flight of shame when they wake up.
I went on a tour of a sugar factory once, and there were lorikeets outside getting wasted on fermented run-off.
Random Gene Wilder voice inside my head.. "The shadberries taste like shadberries!"
A sign about Cedar Waxwings with a picture of a different species, ie Bohemian Waxwing
Those guys migrate to my area too! They get high on fermented crabapples instead of shad berries but they still fly erratically.
This Sign Near A Lake
The sharks are off taking part in a dinosaur laser fight. In space.
Load More Replies...With the growth of cities and populations, outdoor signage significantly increased in number, and English law required every establishment to have one. By the 18th century, the placards had become larger and heavier than ever, marking the start of the painted storefront emblems outside businesses.
This Sign Asking You To Walk On The Grass
Even in shoes, the difference between walking on grass and pavement is astounding. I can almost feel my feet saying, "Aah."
This Brewery Patio Has Rules For Dogs
Now if only they'd apply these rules to the feral kids parents bring in.
A one foot lead wouldn’t allow a dog to lie down. It’d get stressed, and be very uncomfortable.
It only means "short lead", as in "do not come in with your friggin 20m training leash and let your hyperactive pup turn all guests into one huge burrito".

Similar sign at my local children's museum. Adults must be accompanied by children within a children's space. Makes legitimate sense.
It's sad that it's needed - I get that bad people are why we can't have live things. But why can't I, a childless adult, swing on a swing set or go to the dinosaur fossil exhibit at the local children's museum? I'm an adult but I didn't stop liking swinging or dinosaurs.

Finally, we reach modern history, when companies grew bigger, as did the need to grab the attention of consumers. With newly discovered commercial printing and the revolution of sign design, it became a new art form. The invention of gas and electric power was also a game-changer, as signs could be visible at night too.
This Incredibly Specific Stop Sign
Signs like this attract your attention where a ‘wait 30 seconds’ one doesn’t. We have odd speed limits on some construction and industrial sites, they’ll be 13mph or 17mph, you are so conditioned into seeing and not acknowledging the regular signs that you encounter. When you spot a ‘31 seconds’ sign your brain says ‘that’s a very specific amount of time, how odd’, that means you either accept that you have to wait or even better you see a challenge and you actually count the seconds, either way you stop, it’s done its job!
I often wondered about that, thanks for the explanation.

At My Work There’s An Original Sign From The 40s About Wearing Your Safely Goggles
same for working with lasers: "do not look at laser with remaining eye"
Interesting thing about eye injuries: this should probably be plural "eyes". We don't know why, but when eyes become damaged, and antigens that are usually found exclusively inside the eye are suddenly outside, the immune system recognises them as foreign and not only latches onto them, but the ones in the perfectly healthy eye too. It's why eye injuries are ALWAYS dealt with very, very quickly - not necessarily because the damaged eye can be saved, but to try and prevent autoimmune damage to the other eye and thus total blindness.
Very interesting; didn't know that! For some reason the past three years I've scratched my cornea at the beginning of Spring (probably pollen, then rubbed eye - so don't do that!) I'll be more proactive to see the eye doctor when/if I do that again. Thanks for posting that!

Advertisers were constantly trying to find new and advanced ways to produce better, more efficient, and larger quantities of signs. This brings us to today, where large-format printing and digital technology make mass production even faster, and the industry is worth over $37.4 billion.
They Could've Just Made A Stop Sign Instead Of This Sign, But They Were Like, "No Let's Build Excitement Before The Big Drop"
Funny, but there is a reason. It is basically letting people know that in the future the "rules" of that intersection are going to change. I'm sure some person making the laws thought it was important to warn people of such a fact.
I didn't think about that, but that makes sense! Give people time to learn that a stop sign will be placed there so there's no excuse that it just came out of the blue.
Load More Replies...This is a very good idea! There are major safety considerations any time a new sign or road layout is implemented. It is the time of greatest danger. People forget, or are driving on automatic, and don't think/see the sign. But by having the 'new sign arriving soon' sign, it gives people time to get used to it, and it cuts down on the accidents.
Anyone in my town can ask for a stop sign but they have to pay to have a sign like this put up sixty days before the real one is installed. Anyone can then contact the city to refute it/support it. If there are more refute it calls, it doesn't go up. This allows people to identify intersections they think need one but prevents someone living on a corner from messing up local traffic.
The logic is a $100 temp sign is cheaper for the city than a 60 day paid study of the intersection.
Load More Replies...Giving notice is a great idea. My town suddenly put up a stop sign in the middle of a blind curve because there was a side street nearby. There were so many accidents from people slamming on their brakes at the last second and getting hit from behind.
See, that's where advanced notice signs should be given. If someone doesn't know the area, that's just daft. There's a highway near me where the speed limit suddenly drops from 70 to 50 mph, just past the crest of a hill. There is literally no way to safely slow down in the distance from being able to see the sign and the sign itself. Advanced warnings should be mandatory where the sign is not readily visible from a reasonable reactionary distance. They do exist in the UK (mostly in Scotland, but I've seen them elsewhere), but they are still unusual. I can't decide if it's a "we haven't got the funding" excuse, or a "no one in power actually has a clue what they're doing" excuse. Or both. It's probably both. (But they have the money to waste millions on stupid schemes that do absolutely nothing to help anyone)
Load More Replies...They do that here in San Diego. The city has to give 2 weeks notice that a stop sign will be installed so people can p**s about it on NextDoor.

Had to do a bit of digging, but in fact the binary is UTF-8 code for the Original Chinese/Japanese characters at the top, and yes, it and the Korean translation are apparently based on the Neil Armstrong quote of "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind". Odd that they chose a completely different text for the English version.
So why didn't the go with "it's one small drop for man, but it's one giant puddle for mankind" ;-)

The answer is the placement of the light sources (2 of them) happens to be located in a way that the shadow reflected from each “r” ends up on top of each other. Im actually more confused as to why at least some off the letters does not have 2 shadows. Im inclined to think that the shadows on the wall is created by a light source outside the picture.

Wonder if it is in an area that experiences a high tidal range. It could be that at low tide the sign is fully out of the water, and a warning is required. At Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, France, there can be a 15m difference between high and low tide.
Not really, there isn't that much difference between high and low tide in Malta as far as i know. More likely someone plonked it there because they wanted to park wherever the sign was originally :)

Load More Replies...It's for historical reasons. The Korean war is the first overseas war soldiers served under Truman's order of a desegregated military. Also, hundreds of Black soldiers were North Korean POWs.
Nps.gov states "An estimated 600,000 African Americans served... during the Korean war; roughly 9.3% of Americans killed in Korea were African American."

The Signs On The Side Of The Highway In Texas Warn Against Stopping On The Road For The Solar Eclipse
I saw many of these signs in several states in April when I drove 3500 miles round trip to see the eclipse (and it was totally worth it).
I was arrested for stopping to take picture of a rainbow once. Bun Level, NC the magistrate heard the casr at 730 pm in his living room, and fined me the contents of my wallet, less $5.
This Sign In A Karaoke Room Imploring Patrons Not To Open A Door
Clever way to raise money. I bet a lot of people have been too tempted to resist.
I'm back! You're not gonna believe this!................................................................................... There's nothing behind the door!
Load More Replies...Hm, any four people want to come with me to this room and split the 50$ fine to take a peek?
I'd have to open it. It's clearly a portal to eternity if there's literally "Nothing" behind. You could just sing in to the infinite darkness.
On the other side of the door, I hope there’s another sign that said “I told you so”, a security camera and a jar to deposit their $50 into.
The McDonald's In My Town Has A Sign With Only One Arch
That was their original sign. Then someone said.. HEy why dont we just make it an M ,,like McDonalds...and there was no going back
Yeah there are lots of those on the east coast of the US. Something to do with towns where huge signs are prohibited.
I swear these used to be fairly common. I;ve been told I'm a victim of the Mendella effect.

I missed the colons in the times and thought there were 200 ceremonies, 300 games, 400 drinks/snacks, et cetera.
Games?? I'm confused. Is it a birthday party, a wedding shower, or an actual wedding??

This Highway Sign Let's You Know What Highway You Are Not On
It must have happened fairly frequently for them to consider a sign essential.
This seems counter-productive. You are driving, moving fairly quickly & trying to keep your eyes on the road. Many likely only see the "89" and not the top half. A big read strike over it (a la no-smoking signs) would go a long way, though.
US highway 89 makes an abrupt 90 degree turn at an intersection in Panguitch Utah. If you go straight instead of turning to follow it, you end up on Utah highway 143.

Around London Docklands There Are Signs About The Risks Of Swimming In The Canals
Well it may be clean, it may not be but either way it's absolutely crammed with three species of invasive Crayfish which escaped from local "unusual" food traders. They've got really big nasty nippers
They're pretty delicious though. We used to catch them using a lobster pot made from shopping baskets, baited with cat food. It's a bit fiddling to get the claw meat out, but it's free protein and you're helping to balance the ecosystem

Load More Replies...It’s standard procedure not to wear any sort of uniform outside of the hospital for infection control.
I would expect a pile of blue scrubs and a bunch doctors and nurses walked to their cars in their underwear.
it's the same in the food business, just stops contamination. Otherwise you could wear you gear on the way into work and get a big pigeon poo down your back and not notice.
I would notice if I had pigeon poo down my back.

"No Wake" Signs Put Up In South Florida Neighborhood Roads
In this context, “no wake” means “don’t drive so fast through the flooded street that you make waves”….but that’s too much to fit on a sign. You see signs like this in boating areas near a lot of residences so as to prevent waves from rolling on the property and/or disturbing fish or other water life.

I believe the rule of thumb is distances that are horizontal are measured in KM and vertical are in feet.
Load More Replies...I wouldn't be surprised if this is in Canada. We switch between them depending on context all the time. Not unusual for short distances like a person's height to be in imperial while longer distances are in metric. Or weather-related temperature to be Celsius while oven temperatures are Fahrenheit. And so on.

This Restaurant Sign Allowing Legal Carry (NYS)
Maybe it is because I am European, but I'd never dine there. Guns are dangerous and so people are. No thanks..
You should be grateful to the owner for warning you that he/she is a gun nut. Note that if a person has "lawfully concealed carry weapon" you will most likely never know that they have one. Not having a sign like this doesn't imply you are walking into a place where no guns are.
Load More Replies...What the sign actually means is that, the owner , just like those who carry concealed guns, are responsible, trained individuals who are willing to protect YOUR life, as well as theirs if need be against CRIMINALS who ignore the law.
Then explain why most mass shootings are done by people who used legally purchased guns.

It's for a programming job. Most smart programmers these days use version control software, which helps you keep track of when you made changes & why & makes it easy to roll back to earlier dates if you break something. The most popular of these is called "git", and the git website shows this graphic for how often you push new changes to your various projects. Bonus points, the more prolific you are the more green there is, so the more likely you are to recognize this - showing that you have useful skills they want!
