Some of the most fascinating things in life hide behind mundanity. You’ll have to look a little closer to notice what makes them stand out, just like in the photos you’re about to see.

These snapshots come from the Mildly Interesting subreddit. All 24 million members share the same captivation over eye-catching things embedded within the humdrum of daily life. Here, people share pictures of random laser lights appearing in the night sky, square-shaped watermelons, and chia seeds sprouting from toothbrushes.

If reading that confused you, check out this list we’ve compiled to see for yourself. Scroll through and see if you find at least one that grabs your attention.

This is a dumb thing to say but it has literally never occurred to me that there is such a thing as a wild donkey. I assumed they had been domesticated like cows.

The ones in the photos are the domestic species. In a scientific sense, they are feral, not truly wild. They were brought over by the Spanish in the early days of colonization, just like the ancestors of mustangs. There are wild ancestors of donkeys still around, but they live in Africa and Asia and they're called Wild A-s-s-e-s. This Wiki page lists the three species and their subspecies: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_a*s (you'll have to replace that asterisk with an s, BP censored my link)

We have them in Reche Canyon in SoCal too. They frequently come into the surrounding neighborhoods looking for water and tasty flowers to eat.

But not necessaryly less dangerous. Donkeys - and especially feral ones - are absolutely fearless and if they don't like you, you will find out real quick. Donkeys are not horses, they WILL fight you if they see you as a threat.

We all have tedious tasks that immediately bore us when they appear on our daily to-do list. However, as author and speaker Steve Pavlina points out, finding something interesting amidst mundanity is all about perspective.

Take your least favorite household chore. The mere thought of it likely drains your energy. But as Pavlina wrote in an article for his website, you can pair these activities with enjoyable activities, like listening to music or your favorite audiobook.

What's terrifying is letting people drive when they can't back a car that's 65" wide into a space that's 90" wide.

TIL that tortoises live on land and turtles in water (mostly). Anyway, the German language just has Schildkröte (literally shield toad) and if you want to be more precise, you say Landschildkröte or Wasserschildkröte or Meeresschildkröte (sea shield toad). So, take that, English language! 🐢

I still remember the horse pills I had to take after my aneurysm. Two of them four times a day for three weeks, along with other medications. The pharmacist kept piling boxes upon boxes upon boxes up on the counter and I finally said, "We're gonna need a bigger boat." I'm so happy that's over and this person has all my sympathies. Edited to add because I just remembered, it was two pills every four hours, not four times a day. I try to forget that time.

As you can see these were not franked either. I hate that story and it's premise so effing much. If someone loves you, they will hurt and destroy you, and you can't decide if you want to be loved. Either you get abused or you get forgotten and wanting to sit on a shelf gathering dust is bad and you should want to be abused and destroyed

Partly. The faces of neutered male cats do change because of the hormonal change. They get into less fights therefore are a lot less stressed = improved fur.

In the USA anyway, many of the oranges you purchase even loose have been dyed. From the internet: "Here's an explanation, straight from the FDA: “It is a common practice to color the skins of oranges in certain orange growing areas of the country because of climatic or cultural conditions which cause the oranges to mature while still green in color.”"

I read somewhere that the saying of it being bad luck to open an umbrella indoors was promoted by the makers of umbrellas. People would put them away wet rather than leaving them open inside to dry. The fabric would mould and rot and people would have to buy a new umbrella.

It's probably due to unintentional infanticide. The mother got carried away with cleaning the newborns and accidentally ate the ears or other appendages due to mistaking them for afterbirth-placenta and umbelica cord.

Their nose will be honest and you can feel safer..hopefully!!I would never buy anyone perfume unless I knew what they wore and wore it well. Some veterinarians may use fluoxetine in a cat to treat obsessive-compulsive disorders, excessive grooming, itchy skin, bladder inflammation, and abnormal behaviors like hyperactivity or inappropriate urination.

My daughter and her cat had chronic herpes infections (cold sores on human, eye irritation on cat). whenever either one started a flare up, we'd put both on the same Lutein. Well, except the dose. And only one got fish flavored.

Cat's medication is flavored. When I worked at Walgreens as an intern, I always found it fascinating that there could be flavored medication for pets. So for dogs it was bacon and liver additives and for cats it was tuna and duck. And then right next to those additives they had flavored ones for children like bubble gum and grape. LOL

On the original post, someone helpfully commented: “ This is an AV fistula. Where an artery connected to a vein without first going through a capillary, so the pressure in that vein is much higher than normal and stretched out. It's not that big of a deal. They're artificially create them for dialysis access. EDIT: to be clear, this should be evaluated by a doctor and you should be monitored. By not a big deal, I mean you don’t need to go to an ED or worry about some sort of acute life threatening emergency. It likely is just an anatomical quirk, but have an doc make sure there’s nothing else going on”

    arthbach
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The lack of friction cause by having so little of the train on the rail is the reason why there is a maximum gradient for trains. For freight trains, the gradient can be up to around 1.5%, and for passenger trains up to around 4%. On steeper inclines various methods are used to prevent the train sliding back down the track.

There is a whole science behind this. I fell down a youtube rabbit hole one night and watched a video giving great detail about wheel angles used and why. It's mostly about limiting friction and changing the wear pattern on the rails as wheels wear down. But the answer is more diverse than that and they use different angles in different geographical locations. They also have special laser car they run sometimes that burns clean the rails. Mainly of bio matter like dead leaves, which reduce the train's traction. I'm not a train nut but it was more interesting than I would have expected.

Aahhh.... thank you. Now it makes at least a bit sense to me why trains and trams are stopped when there are leafs or snow on the tracks. You'd think they could just drive through everything with those wheels and the weight.

Where's the rest of the train car? "Modern track typically uses hot-rolled steel with a profile of an asymmetrical rounded I-beam. Unlike some other uses of iron and steel, railway rails are subject to very high stresses and have to be made of very high-quality steel alloy." ... including malleability - especially where everything else is melting.

Honey can absolutely go bad. People keep spreading this myth. Honey can spoil and grow fungus. Honey CAN GO BAD. If honey is STORED CORRECTLY and doesn’t get a bunch of moisture in it, it can last indefinitely and won’t spoil. IF. But that doesn’t mean it’s not possible for honey to go bad.

Recycled tires. Except now we're learning they give off all sorts of nasty chemicals and in no way should kids be playing on them, nor should they be leaching those chemicals into the groundwater. They're also used in artificial turf surfaces and rubber running tracks. We're basically poisoning our future generations with good intentions.

From swedish wiki "Methaqualone was a popular party and sex d**g in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and had several street names (Disco Bisquits, Down And Dirtys, Gorilla Biscuits, Whore Pills[1])." Also a "means" (not the right word, but hope you know what I mean) for SA, Bill Cosby to a women, and Roman Polanski to a child... 🤢🤢

The box of Butisol is for barbiturates. Typical of doctors in the days when these were prescribed. Treat women's problems by drugging them to the gills, making them tractable. Inhumane.

I have doubts on this one. The leftmost one has torsion marks on the lower joint, and sign of impact on the base. This is clearly from mechanical stress, like a weight pushing in the middle while sideways or a bad fall.

    UKGrandad

Being stored sideways does not cause a pewter candlestick to bend. The flat edge of the base and the bending at both the bottom of the column and at the top where it joins the sconce suggests that someone was holding it by the sconce and swung it with a lot of force at a hard surface. Think 'Professor Plum, in the library, with the candlestick' 🤔

I wouldn't think it was JUST being stored on its side. I'd be willing to bet some money there was something on top, and you can see there's a dent on the right side of the bent one at the base. I think it was dropped hard.

Yeah. If you open wide and point a light in, you might see a couple little holes on your tonsils. That's how they excrete their refuse from your lymphatic system. Sometimes they look like white pimples at the back of your throat. I used to get them as a teenager. I'd remove them with a turkey baster. They're made of dead cells and cellular garbage and bacteria from the mouth. Spit them out, rinse, you're fine. Totally natural byproduct.

A straight wall higher than 2' - 3' (+/- 0.6m - 0.9m) formed with only a single course of bricks is fairly easy to simply push over. A wall of the height shown would typically be built using two (or more) parallel (side-by-side) courses of bricks.

No, you're not. It's a bit counter-intuitive until you realize you can do a curved wall that's only 1 brick thick, but a straight wall would need to be at least 2 bricks or so deep or it wouldn't stay up for very long.

Grass & crops will grow darker/stronger over an area where the soil is thicker as their roots can go deeper, and reverse wise if the soil is shallow. It's why you can see the outlines of ancient buildings under a field or a garden.

I had alopecia on the back of my head. It was about the size of a euro or fifty-cent piece. The hair grew back white and curly, and it took quite a while to return to normal. Now the hair there is slightly more coarse, but is only noticeable to the touch.

We had the same sign at Pizza Hut. It's because especially places that do delivery and most of their business in the evening, the crooks know they can rob the place late from the back of the store and get money before they do the night drop.

On Reddit there's a backstory that most probably doesn't regard this specific venue, but the circumstances are apparently the same: "Back in the day I had to work at a bk in niagara falls because our store was having a renovation and they had been robbed so many times that if you opened the back door past 9 it was instant termination. Garbage went out right before and the rest sat at the door, and they let people smoke in the mop closet. At the end of the day, all the closers left as a group, noone could leave until everyone was ready."

It's not really a "combination" unit, air conditioner evaporator coils will produce condensate regardless of where they are placed as long as there is humidity in the indoor air.

This is not the same product, the leftmost one is the "reduced fat" version. Nutriscore scoring drops quickly the higher the fat content, and this explains the difference. Nutriscore is a terrible rating system anyway, it gives no information on artificial colorants, sweeteners or dangerous ingredients, and consider "good" fats (such as monounsaturated, fatty acids and HDL) the same of unhealthy ones (trans and saturated fats)

The only way these things know when they are fully charged is when the cells reach 4.2V/ea, any other percentage is an estimate of remaining capacity based on current output since last charge versus rated cell capacity. Voltage is not a reliable indication for SOC on a lithium battery because they have a pretty flat discharge curve relative to other battery types. This may simply be a software error that doesn't reset the scale every time the charging terminates.

Telescopes use laser lights to guide their pointing, but I have no idea if that's what is happening here. In other laser space-related experiments, lasers are bounced off satellites, and off the Moon, to get extremely accurate measures of distance. And SETI sometimes has used signals to distant worlds encoded onto laser beams.

There is a phenomenon known as "rain in plane" where on exiting a hot high humidity airport, the air cools enough for it to rain inside the plane. This can cause all sorts of corrosion problems.

Quarters minted prior to 1964 were 90% silver and 10% copper. Silver quarters weigh 5.67 grams, meaning there's 5.1 grams of silver in each coin. Melted down, the resulting silver would be worth about $5, for widely circulated coins collectors will pay $5.75 - $8.75 per coin, and those in excellent condition, or with sought after features (in the coin collecting world) can sell for as much as $6700.

Australia at about that time had silver 50 cent coins. The value of the silver was more than the value of the coin. The value of the silver would now be very much more than the face value. A lot of them were illegally melted down for their silver content.

My Dobe had to stay over a couple of hours at the vet's and I told them, make sure you don't make eye contact with him or talk to him as you go by and he'll stay quiet. Well, someone didn't get the message and he howled until someone came to sit with him until I finally got off work to get him. He wasn't really unhappy but if you gave in to him, he'd take full advantage.

Not really. When I worked in a bank, I'd guess every year we sent out at least 40 large bags of unfit currency that needed to be destroyed because the bills were torn or unusable. Every one of those bills would have a new bill remade with the original serial number and a star. And that was just one medium sized bank.

We can build things that last a long time BUT manufacturers choose to make stuff wear out. For instance, I bought a 2017 Chevy Volt, plug-in hybrid [meaning electric and gas motor]. At the time, the batteryhad 60+ electric miles capacity. NOW you can't buy a new Plug-in hybrid that has more than 35 miles capacity. BUT we know strictly electric cars can run 200+ miles on a charge. Why has the battery capacity in plug-in hybrids gone down instead of up?

Special grown fruit are given as special gift for appreciation to clients or high ranking members of councils. They are not meant to be eaten in the first place. This is why they are so expensive. The growing process is easy. Just let it grow in a sturdy box. Japan is special.

People, please take your jewelry off, at least when you bathe. No only is it unhygienic, it's bad for the jewelry to have soaps harden in and on it. Also, you should have your jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year, especially if you wear it daily. 24+yrs jewelry experience speaking.

1 USD is equivalent to 4 quarters but this machine is giving an extra 2 cents/ pennies, along with the 4 quarters, whenever someone needs coins and not paper currency.

ALWAYS give back medication to pharmacies so they can safely dispose of it. Animals can get into rubbish bags and be poisoned and dont flush them down the toilet either as it affects the water supply.

This stuff is all expired. THIS is what people who break into pharmacies usually steal first, rather the meds in the locked cases. And not just a little bit outdated, but REALLY outdated. Like 5 or more years. Every pharmacy I've ever seen has one of these.

Most likely it's a 'pinch' type bruise - carrying a heavy shopping bag which has pinched the skin as it slides, so there are differing depths in the bruise.

Nice paragraph of spin. The real reason for ditching the sleeve is, of course, that it reduces the manufacturing cost that little bit. And everybody has an air fryer, don't you know.

Go see a Dermatologist. I work in the field and this could be your body reacting to the ink. It can happen 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, etc years after the ink is placed.

It's an allergic reaction to the pigment (not all reactions are instant, and several years later can happen with tattoos) *Sometimes your immune system thinks the pigment in tattoo ink is a threat and sends cells to the area to fight it. These cells clump together around the tattoo and create nodules which are called granulomas. If you see them, talk to your doctor. They might run tests to rule out other causes.*
