Load More Replies...Redditor Cowbeller1, one of the moderators at r/mildlyinteresting gave us a glance into how some of the most popular posts on the subreddit gain their fame. "A lot of it has to do with luck," they said that fortune plays an important role in photos going viral.
"Maybe you come across something interesting in your day-to-day life and remember to take a picture, maybe you're just lucky enough that something is interesting to the community. No real rhyme or reason aside from that," they shared their opinion.
As for the future, the subreddit plans to do what it does best: remain a stable and unchanging source of entertainment, as well as a cornerstone of Reddit "We will just continue doing the same thing. We've found that being boringly consistent is the best way to remain fair to the community. There haven't been any major changes in a while," moderator Cowbeller1 said.

I love camellias. I don’t know why people get so jazzed about azaleas, which bloom for ten minutes then turn into a boring spindly green plant. Camellias, on the other hand, bloom longer and more often during the warm months, and have larger and hardier flowers that don’t fall apart at the slightest touch. The bushes also can get really big and thick, lush actually, and provide good cover in front of ground floor windows. If I bought a house with azaleas in the yard, I’d pull them out and replace every one of them with camellias in every color they come in.

Not as cold-hardy. Even they ones that are supossed to be bred to take the cold better, still underperform the azaleas, which I agree, aren't as nice, but they are hardier.

1930’s Parquet Flooring Restored Today!

Parquet from the 1930's is a rarity. Many people would have looked at the "before", had it torn up and replaced it. So great you realized what you have and had the patience to restore this.
Photographer Dominic shared that over the past year he's expanded his network and gotten to know even more professional photographers. "Seeing the amount of time and planning some of them do is astounding," he praised his peers. "One such person I know made a 48 hour round trip (driving) to photograph a specific location recently."
According to the photographer, whether a professional relies more on their intuition or plans everything out with regard to the composition of a photo depends on each individual's style of photography. "But for the most part, planning is everything. This means different things to different people, but planning is important. Being instinctive comes down to an individual preference, I suppose, and is a different facet to the plan of attack," Dominic shared that thinking things through is vital to success.

My city is full of free book boxes. People build them and have them at the edge of their yard by the sidewalk. More seem to appear almost weekly. It's awesome.

I picked up a book from a book exchange in a hostel in India. Someone had written in the front cover 'the character in this book who has the least problems kills himself at the end'. I think it was intended as a warning, because it really is a super depressing book. Still glad I read it though, I actually ended up reading it twice.

Yes I've done this ever since I saw a picture of a turtle with a shell completely contorted due to one of those plastic rings around its middle. It had practically caused its shell to grow in two separate sections. The damage done to the internal organs was fatal. Thinking of what that turtle went through, for years.....It was heartbreaking.

Double check. There is a beer company that takes the spent grain from beer production and makes the rings for the beer cans out of it. After the person is done removing the beer cans and recycling them, they can toss the rings in any old pond or ocean and the birds, turtles and fish will eat the rings as they break up in the water.

As for whether or not a photo will be successful, Dominic is open that even the greatest professionals can't say for certain if a project will get the popularity it deserves. "We've all taken photos that we know are aesthetically sound, but they don't get the feedback we feel they deserve. Then, we'll take a photo that we like, but think is just another 'good, not great' photo, and it takes social media by storm. I've seen it happen," he said.
"Unfortunately, some of this has to do with algorithms, time of day being posted, and paid ads," the photographer explained that in the modern world, we have to be aware of the technical aspects that come with sharing photos online.
"A quality photo will not always get the praise it deserves. It's the truth of art. At the end of the day, one has to like their own work that they're putting out there. If others like it too, that's just an added bonus. Photographing what you want is extremely important to not lose artistic integrity and drive and it's also equally as difficult to tune out the noise," Dominic said.

This is also worrying, as I would fully expect any line with as much current as that flowing through it would trip something out somehere pretty quickly - either a fuse or a circuit breaker. Certainly in the UK this would not be normal. I remember one incident quite clearly - my Dad was having a shave with an electric shaver and we heard a loud bang from outside and the power went off - a swan had flown into a 33kV overhead line nearby - it didn't take long for the phone to ring as my Dad was on call - he knew exactly where the fault was!

I can't imagine this being possible in Germany either. We have so many rules and safety measures... (we have special safeties for bathrooms regarding electricity for example). Regardless, most of our lines are underground anyway.

The r/mildlyinteresting subreddit celebrated a whopping 9 years of activity this February and there’s no stopping the community from growing larger and larger still. However much it expands, the moderators are doing what they can to make sure it doesn’t change too much. “We've been working hard to keep it that way,” redditor RedSquaree, one of the moderators of r/mildlyinteresting, told me in an earlier interview.
"The mildly interesting feel of the subreddit is maintained probably due to its rule about titles which weeds out all clickbait which is common in other subreddits. On our side, submissions have massively increased and the moderation team has been forced to expand," moderator RedSquaree earlier told Bored Panda that the mod team is very active and interested in maintaining the high quality of the content.

We haven't changed the rules in years despite some temptations caused by fads. In my honest opinion, it has been for the best. The sub feels pretty much the way it always has."
RedSquaree earlier explained to us how the inspiration to create r/mildlyinteresting first came about back in 2012. The mod told Bored Panda how one thread led user Doginabathtub to create the community but who has been "missing in action for years, and left the mod team years after becoming inactive as a moderator,” RedSquaree explained.

This may sound terrible, but when my son played soccer I never went to the games. He said to me one time "Mom, it is terrible how the parents act." So I would drive him to soccer [it was only about two miles away] and then go home and watch him play in my head, then pick him up and he would tell me all about the game. So I got to see it through his eyes. He never once was upset I didn't go. It was HIS time, his game, his friends and it was ONLY A GAME.

Over the winter when it was freezing we put drops of food coloring in the bird bath. Then it would freeze overnight and we would carefully pull them out the next morning and put them in a pile in the snow. They looked like flying saucers so we called it Area 51. It was very pretty!

If this had been on the back of the shampoo bottles when I was a kid, I probably wouldn't have become a pharmacist. I remember standing there for countless moments as a kid (no internet) wondering why shampoo had to have all that crap in it - what each thing did and why it was in there.

It's difficult to get a sense of scale, so maybe it is a canal, but it looks too shallow to be a proper canal. I think it could be a mill stream leading to an old water-powered mill.

This is actually going to be a serious problem in the near future for people with this condition because fingerprints will be needed for almost all the important documents! Mine are so shallow I have incredible difficulty with time clocks that read fingerprints. My prints are so hard to read, I have to press down so hard it hurts—-and sometimes even that isn’t enough. It also makes my fingertips very smooth, which means that I have to be careful holding stuff, as it can all too easily slip out of my fingers. I’m nervous using glass and china tableware, and invested in Corelle and other unbreakables to eat off of.

Roman coins aren't super rare, but still a cool thing to collect! Though in all honesty, a lot of them may be fake. I've been to a couple of roman forts and they sold the replicas, or you could have one of these made in a coin pressing machine. :P

It's a technique known as brick-bending (always reminds me of Avatar) thinner smaller bricks are connected together and though strong, they are also flexible, which enable the round shapes, that are impossible with larger, thicker, more sturdy bricks. = ) It's a very cool style of building.

No. A lot of domestic plants are grafted, meaning that a branch of the useful/pretty cultivar is transplanted onto the roots and stem of a wild relative. This tree already was two different plants.

Snow is a good isolator - wolves and foxes lay down, let themselves be covered by falling snow and keep themselves warm that way. In combination with their dense fur it traps air that gets heated by their body temperature

Most likely failed for different reasons. One probably developed an air leak, which let the gas out (argon on whatever inert gas it was filled with) and let oxygen in which oxidised the filament - my guess is that it would be the blackened one that leaked.

When air gets into a bulb, the filament oxidizes and creates white smoke as the tungsten burns away in the presence of oxygen. If the bulb does not have a small air leak, and the vacuum is maintained, over time the tungsten will "boil" off of the filament and slowly coat the inside of the lamp. The filament gets thinner over time and one day, you flip on the light and the energy it takes to warm to filament (called inrush current) is enough to vaporize a bit of the filament, causing the lamp to fail and adding just a bit more opacity to the bulb. There! Mansplained!

Great idea in a hotel if you bring your own toiletries and use them in the shower you can grab them after to dry and repack in a hurry without getting wet feet or dripped on. Or put them in there when unpacking

I've seen this magic happen before. I live in Birmingham Alabama. We have snow maybe once a winter. Everyone was to stay off the roads-except those people who don't believe rules are for them. The morning after said storm-the was a flock(?) a murder (?) of all white cars, all piled up (crashed) on the road and in the ditch. Crazy! Like 15 white cars only.

My daughter taps the sugar maples in our yard every winter. She built an outdoor fireplace that holds two hotel pans, and that's where she starts the process. Once they're reduced by half, she finishes them in huge lobster pots on our range. This year, she ended up with about a gallon.

That's cool. In my state inmates make trusses for houses (the a frame part and walls) I am almost positive my house is made from them. To be clear they are assembled at the prison and transported to where ever. The inmates don't actually come build the houses. Even though that would probably be a great idea to give back to the community.

Tree trunks grow on the border of wood and bark, fresh wood to the inside, fresh bark to the outside. Older wood and bark die off - the old bark is a protective shedding layer, the old wood is stabilization. But when exposed, the dead wood is vulnerable to mold etc. I'm guessing someone cut off a branch in the place of the palm tree and the exposed older wood started to rot. A seed falling into a little hole in the rotting would probably be able to force its roots further down the dead wood and into the soil underneath. The tree around it would still have almost all its living tissue and continue to grow regardless.

How do they let people keep medical waste? Ross Keim, it works the other way as well. Not as common but it does happen. We had an older woman at work who was openly hitting on the younger guys in the office. She would approach your desk and lean over exposing her breasts in her low cut tops or grinding her crotch against the corner of the desk (open plan office) The whole office could see what was going on, but she was management, so repercussions were guaranteed. The eighties were wild.

The thing about scratch tests - people who are already reacting to one strong allergen will react to something they ordinarily aren't allergic to. If you're very allergic to shellfish and exposed to tomatoes when reacting to shellfish, you could test positive for tomato allergy even though you'd never have a reaction to tomato if they tested that at a different time.

This happened to me when I was a boy, but it turns out I wasn't allergic to anything they tested for. I have dematographia (https://www.healthline.com/health/dermatographia) and it causes red lumps like this from minor skin irritations. But they doctors didn't know that, didn't tell me about the red lumps on my back (I could have told them what was going on) and I had useless allergy shots for months on end.

I think there’s a difference between not using one and not having one. If you have one but don’t use it you’re probably still obligated to put it on your card.

Incorrect. They're Windsors... our current, long reigning queen known to all as Queen Elizabeth II has a full name: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. Other descendant Royals are permitted to use Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor as a surname.

I agree. And so many different things, some nature, some made by humans. Some close-up detail, some from a distance. And those that are created on-purpose, they didn't always realise what effect it would have once finished.

Sometime in the 90s, I saw a movie marquee with three movies listed on it that could be read as a full sentence: Trainspotting: That Thing You Do To Jillian On Her 37th Birthday. Didn't get a photo, as it was before cell-phones with cameras built in, but it has always stuck with me.
