It’s no secret that getting along with management people is not always a given, but rather a gift. They often put too much pressure on the backs of already stressed employees, making it a perfectly toxic workplace environment to brew and prosper. And in some more extreme cases, it gets passive-aggressive, to say the least.
The corner of Reddit known by the name which screams sarcasm, Thanks Management, is a safe space to talk about hard things. According to the subreddit’s description, it’s a place made for “Showcasing notices from imperious middle managers, owners, landlords, school administrators, mean bosses, and overall pedants. Bonus points for misspellings, exclamation marks, threats over petty bullshit.”
And they mean it. From evil posters put up in the staff room as if nothing happened to the implementation of very questionable tools that are supposed to boost productivity at the expense of people, these are some take-notes-kids examples of how not to run your business.

Is Your Car Too Old? Well You're Fired Since A Responsible Person Would Own A Luxury Vehicle
Exactly. What if I have a 1986 VW Syncro. Pretty good condition. Management says that I might COMMIT FRAUD BECAUSE ITS AN OLD CAR. What the eff indeed.
Load More Replies...How about, "I consider my personal financial decisions and purchases a private matter. I understand your concerns about employees with high debt burdens; rest assured that my frugality in not replacing a working vehicle is a sign that I am not financially over-extending myself or taking on unnecessary debt. If the company wants to ensure a certain vehicle standard as part of managing appearances for our customers/clients, please issue me a company car."
Yep. Or "I love clapped out old cars, ta very much, sod off". Flipping cheek!
Load More Replies...This is absolutely insane. If you want your employees to project a certain image then provide company cars, wth.
Holy s**t! So inappropriate. I keep my cars until they die. None of their business. Also, so they think that if you have an older car or any financial distress you are going to steal or commit fraud. Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like Wall street commits more fraud than any of the rest of us so they can pay for their brand new cars. Sick
I have never heard of a company doing credit checks for their employees. What they spend their own money on is none of their damn business.
Unfortunately, it’s a common practice in the U.S. I’ve been turned down from a job because of my poor credit. They didn’t give two shits that it was all medical bills. How getting stuck with $375k in hospital bills my health insurance wouldn’t pay for equates to poor financial decision making is beyond me. The joys of being American.
Load More Replies...Dear Sirs or Madams, I am so very glad you ask. As you may gave noticed I, in fact, had more expensive car when I started working here. The problem 7s, it kept beeing burglared on the company parking lot 3-4 times a week. My need to downgrade my car, and my problematic financial situation arose from the need to frequwntly replace the windows of my car. While I am in no position to tell you how to do your job, one possible solution to this issue might be to pay your employees adequat, so sthey do not have to break into the cars of their coworkers and steal their belongings. Of course I understand how busy you are, but maybe, if you would mind your own buissness, you would not have to mind mine. Sincerely Shitty car owner Also here is my two weeks notice
My understanding is that business owners can be liable if they don't pay for security if there is a reasonable proof of a history of persistent criminal activity on their grounds.
Load More Replies...American corporations are insane. The fact that a credit check from potential employers is common and legal is depressing but this letter is possibly even worse.
Which part of "Personal Matter" confused them so much they decided to write this whole letter?
I work in HR and I can't even begin to describe the levels of wrong in this letter. Why would someone from HR ever send a letter like this?
My own experience with HR people, seems to be three kinds: --Those who are there because they like working with people, and will go out of their way to make life better for everyone --Those who will do the absolute bare minimum of work because they don't care about people or the job --And those who think it gives them power over people and enjoy tormenting them whenever and however they can think of an excuse to do so.
Load More Replies...This is new... so, you have to take on debt inorder to work for them. They literally say, we can't trust you with money because you won't use yours to buy newer things
The whole logic underlying credit scores is that insane: "Before we lend you money for a necessity (mortgage) at a reasonable rate, you need to build up the credit score by taking on needless debt and pay it off regularly for a year or two".
Load More Replies...I think that's illegal in most jurisdictions, and this letter is all the proof you need.
reason is: i like my car so no not upgrading and if u have a problem then u can fire me i'll go work somewhere else
My disbelief started at the first sentence! Some companies do credit checks???? This is a US thing again, right?
Clearly there are inadequacy issues. People who define their worth by the car they drive need to get help
The only suitable response to this, is printing this email, calmly walking to the Vice President's office during a meeting, laying the email down like newspaper for a dog, trousers down, squat over the email, drop a nice curled turd, stand up, look the Vice President in the eye and say "I'd like a raise"
WOW!!!!........... I really hope it is illegal to voice this with an employee in this country.....
How in the hell can this possibly be legal (if indeed it actually is)?
Time to look for another job .... What a pair of sanctimonious assholes !! As an aside, I worked as a private, freelance Chef for many, many years in mansions, large houses, estates and for a whole bunch of seriously wealthy people. Two stand out, the first was a lovely couple who had 3 large estates in England, Scotland (which included a manor house and a castle) and one in France ; Their car of choice, which was very well looked after mechanically but looked like a wrecker, was a 20 year old Renault Estate car with sagging seats and smelled truly awful. The second was an extremely wealthy German count who dressed like a tramp and would spend hours hanging round the kitchen to try and figure out how to cook (he never learned and was completely inept). His main choice of transport for the immediate area was a ratty 50cc moped and for longer trips a top of the range 1956's Mercedes 'Grosser' that, as far as I could tell, hadn't been cleaned for 20 years .....
First, unless my car is a toxic rolling turd eyesore, it’s none of their business. Second, a person can have excellent credit, become suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed for an extended period of time, deplete their savings on rent and bills, fall short and/or behind on payments, and watch their credit score plummet. Once working again, they will live frugally and put any extra they have into catching those bills up as quickly as possible. They may even take on a second job to expedite this. We’re seeing this, en masse, right now because the pandemic has shuttered businesses and put people out of work or cut their hours to the barest minimum. A dollar can only stretch so far, but late fees still pile up. No matter how much you tell creditors you can only afford a certain amount, they still come back with a figure so far above your limit, yet think they’re doing you a favor. You’re still going to pay them something every month, which is a hell of a lot better than nothing at all. But nope, not good enough.
Please don't black out the name of the company or the vice president.
I would've let the company know that I'm posting the letter online & asking Social Media if it's legal for them to do this & if not- is there any Lawyers willing to help.
Wtf😲.. can you report this to the authorities? Workers Union or something?
I live in Canada. The only situation where I've heard of anything similar is when someone goes for top secret government clearance or someone (such as a corporate lawyer) drives a more upscale car (and wears good suits, etc.) to inspire confidence from wealthy clients.
If the appearance of my vehicle is important for business reasons, the business is welcome to provide me with whatever sort of 'company car' they deem appropriate.
Load More Replies...My car is 12 years old and I don't plan to replace it anytime soon. Looks fine, just had major repairs so it should be good for another 3 or 4 years at least. I was acquainted with a multi-millionaire who drove a beater. He just didn't care that much about status symbols like expensive cars.
My brother was offered a position with IBM in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in the 1960s. One requirement was that he drive an up to date American car. No foreign cars were to be in the parking lot. He declined the offer of employment.
If they tried to pull that on me I would just inform them that my car is paid for and I am not taking out a loan for a new(er) one. If they want to pick up the tab that's on them but I'm not putting my name on the line if I don't have to.
Wow. I always drive my cars way past them being paid off, until they don't want to 'live' anymore.
To whom it concerns, As you may know, having a certain make and mode of a car was not a requirement listed upon being hired. Instead, I was told that reliable transportation was needed. My current car is able to provide that for me. If you would like to change this, I am open to driving a company car.
If the car I drive is important to my job then you need to provide me with an appropriate car.
I worked for a company that did this. I didn't have a car at all. I was fired within 3 months.
perhaps they are financially prudent and saving to pay cash rather than extra interest or not updating before they need to and wasting resources. they might be saving for something else
Sounds like a damned hostile work environment to me! Just because the mgmt. feels that the salary is adequate for a higher price car, doesn't mean that the employee wants to go into debt just to suit mgmt' s image!
WTF! Nonyabiz. Some people think that if a car is still running and it takes you from point A to point B, that should be enough. Besides, newer cars require additional insurance no one waits to pay.
This would be an HR nightmare in most cases. A vehicle is to transport your body from point A to point B without having to walk or ride the bus. I actively avoid anyone whose identity/self worth is directly related to the car they drive.
Sorry... I don’t think this is legit. No employer would have the right to send out a letter as such. This could get them into a huge mess. I think someone just wanted to have something to post for 15 minutes of fame.
What if her vehicle is a classic 2002 BMW and there's no friggin' way she's gonna ditch that beauty. Or she own's a 1974 Convertible VW Thing! Those are the best! How about either a 54 or a 64 corvette I mean... That lady has some serious car taste - or perhaps, she's not an idiot and like her car and cannot see any reason what so ever to fix something that's not broken? That makes better financial sense than get a new car because you can...
Corporations are sociopathic by nature -- treating people as things, and things as people
Dear VP's, If you don't like my vehicle, please feel free to purchase another at your expense. I will be happy to drive it under your insurance as well. Thank you for consideration of my well-being.
Nothing new. GM did this to my uncle in a slightly different tone. Get rid of the Ford and become a Mason.
my Simplicity Circle friends would be horrified and laughing at this!
What. The. Actual. F*ck. Several people actually thought this was appropriate? An HR person thought this was appropriate?
Wowwwww - It's non of their business. What if they are trying to save money by not buying a luxury vehicle? I would print this email and get a lawyer involved, or quit, or both!
WTF is right! I had a 1997 Honda del sol. I freaking LOVED my car. Anyone who knew me knew I would never give that car up! She died last year. I was crushed. It was getting tough to find parts. Still..
I guess I could drive to work in you mom's car, but that might create ill will between us. So I'll just have her drop me off.
Once upon a time, a client asked why I was still driving that junky car of mine having seen the quality of work I did for them. In front of my boss, I simply answered I cannot afford a better car. He turned to my boss and laughed. Actually I could get a better car but I am a rather prudent person. I got a raise after we closed that project lol.
My vehicle is paid for free and clear. THAT'S being fiscally responsible.
I'd send them the picture and the price of a new vehicle I want. Tell them in no uncertain terms that they are infringing on my private life, if they want me to drive a luxury vehicle, they will purchase it for me in my name. Otherwise I will meet them in court for infringing on my private life and using Communist threats to harass my private life.
I'm so glad crap like this is illegal where I live. I would take that letter to an employment lawyer.
If that car is able to get you to work on time regularly, it's none of HR's business.
Excuse me! What in the actual Hell is going on here! My favorite car of all time was a '78 Camaro and would still drive it today if it had been "family friendly". It had nothing to do with money. What a sh## show!
This can not be true?! Surely, it can’t! Two actual humans read this email and thought ‘yeah that’s reasonable, send it’... really!!! Just who in the f do they think they are?! Do they wear pink on Wednesdays? How can this be legitimate...and then, from someone who actually works in HR!!! Is it actually possible to be that oblivious and yet still function enough to hold down a job? Is it? Dumb as f.
What the actual frig, man? I'd be rockin' a rusted-out Civic with bald-ass tires in the two weeks' time I'd still be working for those crusty asshats.
Is there any chance that the employee was a traveling salesperson? Something where the car they drive affects their business? (OTOH, ever hear of a company car?)
Oh wow, well that would be printed asap and taken to the closest lawyer that the annual salary would pay for and I'd own the damn company AND dealership when I was done, but only drive that VP's car for amusement.
Thank you for this written proof. Now if I get fired I can say it was due to my car and sue you and contact the news media so you get all the nice PR also. Sincerely, Employee #12345/9
Wow.... that is messed up.... what’s wrong with not having a souped up corvette?
Nobody is safe from mean management practices in the workplace, regardless of how much you love or hate your job. But let’s be honest, the more pressure we have put on our shoulders, the less motivated we are to add that extra bit of effort to the company we work for.
And although this can happen for many different reasons, mean managers can be a huge setback for us professionally and emotionally. But how you determine whether the management has indeed crossed the line? Buzzwords like toxic workplace are all over the place, but when it comes to real life, most of us are left scratching our heads.
Rude behavior toward employees is generally defined as a display of disrespect, a breaking of social norms or expectations, a breach of etiquette, or ignoring "accepted" behavior. It can also mean that a manager is behaving inconsiderately, aggressively, or deliberately offensively.

Rudeness can manifest in many forms, from passive-aggressive behavior, micromanaging, anger management problems, to favoritism towards one person, bullying, and many more. The mean behavior can also be used as a way to display one’s power and show superiority over others, and in this case, as well as others, you'd better run far away from it.
In such cases, setting boundaries is key. Everyone should learn to distance themselves from a manager who’s mean to them and, at some point, stop taking in all the negativity. In other cases, if you are sure that your boss is incompetent, it’s just reasonable to become a leader on your own.
Management will notice your initiative eventually, and you will likely earn some extra points just by keeping the mean person out of the loop.

Whatever happens, make yourself a top priority. It’s just not fair to allow yourself to be treated badly and purposefully disrespected day by day by someone who has no reason to do so. In some extreme cases, even the best reasoning is not an excuse for anyone to shout or offend you, whether it’s a co-worker, a manager, or a boss.

The first one is encouraging employees to not be part of a union. A union is a group of employees who stand up to management if they are treating workers unfairly. The second one is a threat to the management who made the first one, reminding them of the French Revolution; when the working class basically cut all the rich people's heads off and overthrew the government.

Customers - remember, before getting huffy when cashiers get pushy about rewards programs and/or cards, they'd rather not. They are being forced to do so. They aren't hassling you of their own volition.
