USA here. I got stung by a bee last summer, im highly allergic....ambulance from my house to the ER...$2,700. Mileage, oxygen and epinephrine. $2,700. It sucks. It was 6 miles away.

Do you think we do it because we want to? People outside of the US think it's easy to change for some reason. Trust me - we think it sucks too. But sh!tting on the country over and over again isn't helpful.

Just in the interest of balanced reporting. In Queensland, Australia it costs hundreds (potentially thousands) if you need an ambulance. The difference is at some point ambulance cover was factored into electricity bills. So technically everyone in Queensland was paying a little extra every electricity bill but as a result an ambulance ride costs them nothing. Later on the State Government changed it and just started paying the coverage themselves. So *now* we're just paying a little extra in state taxes every year to get the cover. Ambulances aren't cheap to run, so doing something like this seems like a smart way to spread the cost and actually make sure people can always afford to utilize one.

A thousand bucks for an ambulance? Try $3,500. They tried to put me on a gurney and into one after I was trapped in a fire and had to jump out a second story window and when I came to and saw what they were about to do, I hopped off the gurney and limped away. F that. They were pissed, too. The system is broken as hell.

Because American ambulances, just like our hospitals, are run by private for-profit companies, not the government that can basically charge anything they want to transport you. Yay capitalism.

I actually had to leave Canada and move to the US because I was not allowed healthcare in Canada anymore, and I have heart problems {I am 16 yo.) As expensive as healthcare is here, at least I can get it!

It depends. Medicare covered my husband's ambulance service. My insurance covers it. I have ambulance insurance in our small town. Its about 120 a year, just in case. When I went to renew they told me..."oh we did not need to rebill this year, we made enough." And you are not paying for the just the ride. You are paying for EMT training, medicines needed, equipment. My husband lost the ability to walk; instead of carrying him out down the stars, there was a machine/chair thing that did it.

my mom took my brother to the hospital in an ambulance once when it wasn't even an emergency but because a car ran over his leg and they would've made it to the hospital faster if they hadn't taken the ambulance and wasted so much money

Please. It's not that expensive. I just paid $556 for an in network urgent care visit. Didn't meet with a doctor, took 20 minutes to get a prescription I had to get at a pharmacy.

That's only for citizens, if you come illegally you get free healthcare, free housing better than most citizens can afford, and a prepaid card with 5 to 10 thousand dollars a month on it each month all without having to work or pay tax.

You have quite a point here: most people are proud to be a citizen of their nation, for instance British or Spanish, but are not happy about the shows in their countries either. Somehow most gouvernments lack contact with their constituents, except when it's election time.

Australia here, yeah not perfect but we have gun control, free health care, subsidised medication, manageable student loans. Growing up I always wanted to live in America, still would love to visit but that's all.
