Who doesn't love a well-timed, fuzzy, heartwarming and wholesome post? They remind us that all is not lost in the world. That somewhere out there, between the misery and despair, some good still exists.

But sometimes, we search so hard for the positive that we think we’ve found it in feel-good pictures of smiling employees going above and beyond, or stories about someone finally paying off their student loan debt by working three jobs. For a split second, our icy hearts melt. Then our brains catch up, and we realize that these posts are just heaven on the surface but hell down below… Grit wrapped in a pastel bow.

There’s a special corner of the internet reserved for wolf-like content dressed in sheep's clothing. Facebook page, Dystopian late-stage capitalism horrors repackaged as heartwarming stories is exactly what the name suggests: a wall of reminders showcasing just how twisted society really is.

Bored Panda has put together a list of the best posts from the page to pinch you awake if you've lost touch with reality. May they serve as a warning that sometimes, the most dystopian thing isn't the future but rather the way we've learned to romanticize the struggle right now...

Well said! It's infuriating how rightwing a$$holes hate when tax dollars are spent feeding American citizens but don't mind the trillions of $ in handouts private companies receive in the form of subsidies, bailouts etc

Why do only Americans think socialism is communism? My taxes pay for healthcare and transit, roads and the like. Others taxes help me when I need it. I don't get a bill from a hospital. My medication is covered.

Socialism would be closer to: kids go trick or treat, and you take a small portion of their candy, and put it in one bowl. Then, throughout the year, when one of them is feeling down or had a bad day, you give them candy from the bowl. One of them may get more candy than they added to the bowl and some less, but all of them will always have the candy there when it will really improve their day

Trick or treat is not a job. Only someone that adds (He/him) to his name can be this stupid. Honestly I only visit this website to check the levels of stupidity in a certain side of American society

That's all nice and good, but what about the thousands and thousands of employers who don't. Insurance should NOT be tied to employment. It should be mandatory that employers allow workers time off for illness. If the worker can't return, there should be a minimum severance package of at least two weeks so their work comp and unemployment can kick in. If they can return, their job should be waiting. The federal government allows positions to be filled with an open end date with two weeks notice. They can even do a possible reduction to part time to allow the original employee to slowly enter the workforce according to his healing process.. Capitalism s***s.

The cult of "your own bootstraps" is nearing its natural conclusion. If you're prepared to throw the legitimately needy under the bus in order to guarantee nobody can game the system, that's not civilization. That's the law of the jungle.

Usually in a situation like the this, it's a private equity firm. They buy up companies like nursing homes and hospitals, then liquidate the assets of those companies, while at the same time forcing the companies to take on a substantial amount of debt (actually the debt was the cost of purchasing the company). Once this is done, the company files for bankruptcy, and the private equity firm keeps all the profits. It's corporate piracy, but highly lucrative. And as nursing homes and rural hospitals already have stretched budgets, they are an easy target for these firms. It's also perfectly legal. It's just that the UK, EEA, and Australia have more regulations surrounding hostile takeovers, and how private equity firms can operate.

No, children are not born knowing the difference between right and wrong. They are born with a rudimentary moral compass that develops through social interaction and experience. Babies show signs of basic moral sense, like preferring helpful characters in studies, but they need to learn the complex rules and reasoning of morality from the people and environment around them.

The are only legslly required becsuse they ssy they sre legslly rewuired. There is no law or statute in USA thst required to favor stockholders. They are required to follow the rules the set up when the form the corporation. So the write a document that favors the shareholders ( because they need investment money ) and that contract is legally binding. They could just as well write one thst says "must protect environment at all costs" and then they would, by law, be rewuired to favor environment. They favor the stockholders because they choose to.

I was taken to the ER on a random Thursday with the blood sugar reading of 319. I was diagnosed with diabetes, and given a blood sugar testing kit and insulin. Except, that same day, my insurance DENIED my insulin. A few days later, after my doctor wrote a letter to the insurance company, I paid $77.17 for the insulin. Thankfully my readings have been at a good level, so I don't need to take insulin right now, but it was insane.

If you think the cost of healthcare is outrageous (and I agree), you should see the cost of durable medical supplies and equipment that patients NEED in order to live some semblance of a normal, average life, with their disabilities and/or medical conditions. I am personally familiar with the cost of ostomy supplies (when a patient has a colostomy to drain their bodily waste directly into a bag connected to an abdominal stoma). The companies that fill the orders/prescriptions for basic equipment needs bill insurance (or Heaven forbid, the consumer patient) well over $10,000.00 monthly without blinking an eye. And that is the DISPOSABLE, consumable items that are needed monthly. Doctors aren't being paid even close to as much to provide care for these patients who require the supplies. DISGUSTING!!

Sweden has a very high cost of living, significant taxes, and long, dark winters with limited sunlight, a reserved social culture, lengthy healthcare wait times, and challenges in finding housing, particularly for renters. Socially, there are complaints about a culture of conformity and a perceived lack of spontaneity, rising gang violence including shootings and bombings, and has one of the highest gun death rates in Europe.

Of all the non-English speaking immigrants who apply for residency, only 3-5% are POC. Not because people of color make up such a small percentage of those applying - in fact, they account for ~85% of applications - but because the process, as an extension of American society & communities, inherently does not want POC immigrating. That’s the cold hard truth. The capital of California has more undocumented Eastern Europeans than anything else, yet they don’t count for even a single percentage of ICE detainees. ICE indiscriminately targets people out in public based on the color of their skin or the type of last name. Furthermore, nobody leaves their home, their family, their loved ones & their community to flee to an unwelcoming country where they’re persecuted & constantly racially attacked, a****d and profiled because they want to steal jobs. They’re doing it for survival. I’d rather deal with being unwanted in USA than targeted by cartels, gangs & corrupt government.

Teachers now have a saying - you required us to learn how to defend our students in case of a shooter, so why are you shocked we’re employing those tactics against ICE? I’m a teacher, and I would love to put those skills to good use someday against one of those government-sponsored terrorists with tiny genitalia.

Winners can choose a lump sum payout which is roughly half the total jackpot. That dollar amount is then subject to all taxes. Itn this case, ilooks like it's about 50% of the amount won, which tells me he bought the ticket in a state with income taxes. This is about 50% higher than taxes on other billionaires.

On the one hand it sounds a trifle unfair, on the other hand he has US$424 million than he had before, which will help cushion the blow, I imagine. I think it's totally fair to tax the winner a lot. He got loads of money without working for it, it's only fair to share part of it. (but I do think other millionaires need to be taxed a lot too, obviously) In the Netherlands, some lotteries in their ads say "Win a million, tax free", meaning that you actually win a lot more but after taxes you're left with a million. That sounds like a better system.

This info might be useless to you, but...I worked as a paralegal for an attorney in Albuquerque doing VA claims. We had allsorts from guys who were comfortable in life, to guys who were homeless. VA had denied prior claims, when my boss got on them (veteran himself) he would pummel them with medical records and appeals, knew every person's phone number at the VA to harass, and kept on it like a pitbull. He got almost every single claim put through and raised the disability rating so the veterans got more money, then he'd make the VA backpay til when the claim was originally filed. One guy got over $100k check in the mail cus he'd been waiting YEARS. If you can find a lawyer that does this, it's worth chasing up. He didn't take money from clients, he waited til the case was settled then sent the bill to the VA to pay. Best of luck.

I would have expected that to be disability discrimination. You can't choose not to hire disabled people (unless they cannot do the job e.g. blind person flying a plane) and you must make reasonable adaptations for them to be able to do so. And bizarrely the US actually has quite strong disability laws.

However, we know that the vast majority steal for d***s, fancy clothes, whatever they want, not what they need. Endorsing theft will result in you being the next victim (figuratively speaking).

In most circumstances, Federal Law *requires* tips to be counted as part of wages... that is the whole waitstaff wage debate - and the people who most vigorously oppose ending it - are waitstaff. Doordash tried to claim delivering food counts as food service...

I dont know how other states work but in Alaska ita illegal to use tips to cover minimum wage. In fact Alaska minimum has always been higher than federal, and they have no state tax YET. The politicians are trying their best and have been stealing from our residents for a decade to no repercussions (not a euphemism they actually refuse to change the laws but take the money anyway and shrug).

Countries, just like companies and individuals, budget for the things it prioritizes. We can all see what this country prioritizes: military, billionaires, ICE, a ballroom in the White House, etc. The country doesn't prioritize the right things. If it did, things would look very differently for the better.

OP shouldn't HAVE to go to the food bank! Although I am personally in favor of having structures like food banks. Everyone should be able to go without any stigma and enjoy the benefits of free food rather than having so much wasted food in this society.. So much is thrown out when people could be fed.

The insurance companies realize there is no way they are going to be able to collect more than a fraction of the debt. So they "bundle" a large number of cases and sell the bundle to debt collectors at a fraction of the cost of the debt. The debt collectors then squeeze every penny they can from the poor people who owe the money, often bankrupting them in the process. Charities have been set up who raise donations to buy the bundles from the debt collectors. They then get to send notices to all the people who owe that money telling them that their debt has been cleared. It totally s***s that we have to do this in the US but it is a wonderful way to help people.

See @tameson's explanation above: the likely scenario is that the hospitals wrote off the debt and sold it to a debt collection company for pennies on the dollar in order to get SOMETHING back. The debt collection company is the one who settled for $15k and it made sense because they likely paid a lot less than that for "acquire" the debt.

Burger king, like McDonalds and in fact nearly every single garbage can eatery that is found in every corner of the world, are FRANCHISES. That means a given location is privately owned and operated. While that location does source its inventory from the corporate supplier, and may choose to engage in pricing or promotion campaigns, the owner sets the wages, the owner keeps the profits. These fast food places are more akin to real estate companies at this point. That's how they make their money.

I've delayed taking off to work to search for my cat. I thought she'd have escaped the flat and ran into the basement which I, sort of, took apart like a very careful burglar. Four hours after I should have left, I found her in a hiding place I had checked multiple times before searching everywhere else. Boss wasn't happy ... as this isn't much accepted, I made up something including a human needing me. I lied to my boss because I care more about my cat being safe than some powder-drying facility being CAD'ed ahead of time.

Oh, I believe this. Google is free as gvizzle74 says. Also I believe that people have to scrounge if they want a funeral in the US. Funerals in the US are obscenely expensive and funeral companies prey on the emotions of the grieving to sell overpriced c**p. I have told my family I insist on being cremated in a cardboard box without being embalmed, then scattered by them instead of having an expensive urn in some crematory crypt. I don't want any sort of memorial at an expensive funeral home. But many people don't want that for their dead family, and that's their choice. They shouldn't have to go into major debt to do things differently though,.

No, that's not the ONLY thing the district can do. S**t, if they only opened 2 classrooms for the male and female students to sleep safe, dry, and warm on foam pads with sleeping bags, and let them have access to the bathrooms, that would be a humane thing to do. If they're worried about damage, hire someone to supervise. S**t. Our society is so broken.

let's focus on the real solution: we lack affordable housing because local zoning ordinances make it difficult to build new housing. sleeping in your mom's car is not the answer. elect officials who will act responsibly, instead of protecting wealthy enclaves.

Suburban New Yorker who worked as a teacher asst. here. Our school budget provides a fair amount of supplies (but not for things like tape or pencils) but it's not enough for a school with a 51% free & reduced lunch population (well, that was a few years ago. It's been free lunches for all for a while now but the families are still poor & many can't afford to pay for their children's activities.) When students are asked to supply tissues, pencils, crayons, etc. at the beginning of the year, the teachers put all of that aside & dole it out over the length of the school year as needed.

I REALLY hate when people say ‘I sacrificed seeing my children grow up’. No you didn’t. You did exactly what you wanted to do the most. You forced your children to sacrifice the idea of having a parent that prioritised their well being and just loved being with them. They made the sacrifices and pay the price while you just did what you were going to do anyway.

I work 73 hours a week on my 5 year old business, I used to work more hours but reduced them this year, and took a whole 5 days off. My husband has done the same. Every contractor we have is on "work when you want" non-schedule, so they can live their lives. We have a dream, they have a life! All jobs should be work driven, and when done you go home, so there's no milking a clock.

It’s shocking how much price gouging goes on in the American health industry. It’s not just what it cost to deliver, so everyone gets paid, or what it cost to deliver plus a little profit for the shareholders, it’s the most money they could possibly charge. Remember they charge $10 for one Hall’s Soothers lozenge and that shows the mark up they’re aiming for.

Within the last five years I've had several x-rays, a CT scan, an operation to have a metal plate put in my leg, and three impacted wisdom teeth removed (one under general anaesthetic) and it's cost me £24 in car parking.

Not all toys have to be aspirational. This could be a good decoy for kids who are always trying to play with the real thing. And it's good that this toy laptop and phone have zero real electronic functionality.

Not a bad toy...like the toy kitchen, or tool set, kids will often imitate their parents at home and will want to mess with mom or dads equipment so give them their own. Also sure it will help cat parents too...kitty will have it's own laptop sit on and flash their b******e on and their own fake coffee cup to dip their paws into

On the fence for this. How is this different from my mom bringing me extra bank forms so I could "play" doing her job (aka the finances for her pub)? I think, most kids like to play 'working just like (parent) does'. And work from home is actually a nice thing.

Depends. The top 1% by income starts at $652,657, so this costs around 65% of the salary before taxes. So a fairly hefty dent. The top 0.1% starts at $2,805,105, and this is around 13% of their income before taxes, so still a decent dent. You're thinking maybe of the top 0.01%, who make $17,855,123 annually. There are around 13,000 households in the USA which make this much or more.

I think it's important to have some kind of occupation. Like an elderly lady who takes care of her dog or something like that. This is healthy and keeps you mobile. Or if you WANT to keep doing whatever you did before. But if you HAVE to work till the reaper comes because you can't afford retirement, that's a whole different story.

When people dont work for mega corporations, they start to build their own businesses. We aren't taught to build new ones, but that is how jobs historically worked. You learned a skill and then figured out how to do it yourself, better or faster then they did. I did, and realized how possible it was to MAKE MY OWN JOB (after repeated failures).

The price margin is generally made as competitive as possible to get customers, so they're likely to reduce prices if they don't lose so much. I have done accounts for shops and it works like this when calculating markups.

Well, it might sound dystopian in USA, where people steal bread and milk from grocery stores, because they can't afford food. Luckily, Iceland takes a lot better care of their citizens, so presumably (I hope) shoplifters are people with ill intentions, not in need.

Yes, but a company which made a £314 million profit last year is asking customers to act as security guards in exchange for £1. I'm assuming this is Iceland, the British chain of supermarkets not the Nordic island country.

They even admitted that to me, that they were pretending to actively search, advertise as if the position actually exists, but they only did IN CASE such a position was open again, so that they'd have me and my fellows in the sleeve already. We were 20 people, all having believed the position actually exists, because the ad said exactly that. Won't name them, they still exist, and companies coming after you for exposing their fault isn't what would help me much now.

Having given birth twice what is this obsession that women need to be told to push??? Ridiculous. Most of the time the body just gets on with it (women have given birth in a coma) but if she wants to add a little push on that’s for her to judge. Believe me, no woman in labour EVER wouldn’t have pushed if she hadn’t been instructed to by an onlooker.

Yes, this is how businesspeople make money. This isn't how most of America makes money. Although this is a good place to start if you do want to keep savings, because this is essentially what a savings account does- it invests in something that is an asset and has return on spend... and not budgeting means less money to spend on the things that make you more money. So actually this is a pretty good idea, its just different for everyone depending on their level of money.

The idea is a good one though. Once my kids had left school and worked to fund their university for a year,, I charged £50 an month. Then I gave them the lump sum as they left for uni so that they had a small cushion.

I have heard of parent that can afford to do this going down this route. it's not a bad idea if you can afford to not have them contribute to household costs, which most parents really do need at that point. if you can afford to do this, they get used to having financial obligations, but more leeway than the real world if something comes up, and then by the time they're ready to leave home, they can actually have a chance of owning somewhere.

Or, I suppose you could give them the $36,000 back so they could have one year at a university. Remember the good old days when you could work your way through school, get a decent job, then save the money to buy the house?

Somebody being deported is not heartwarming. To think receiving such a letter is heartwarming is to be critically self-centered. To publish it as a humblebrag adds a second layer.

this is fine. they're growing vegetables, gardening giving them some fresh air and routine, moderate physical work to help stay fit. getting a healthier diet due to the fresh veg. may even be of some benefit finding future employment, if they have some skills and knowledge from it.

You'd be surprised. I called a friend once after looking at real estate in the Bay Area. She and her husband owned a regular tract house in a regular neighborhood on about an eighth of an acre. I congratulated her on her half-million dollar house. She corrected me. "It's worth a million, now," she said. That was 5 years ago. Guess what it's worth today.

There are a lot of valid criticisms, from her private jet to her butchering of Shakespeare. Even the vinyl variants, which she could choose not to sell even though they're in demand. But if hardworking people want to give their money to Taylor Swift, that's on them.
