Long story short, I lived in a very very rural area and a border collie showed up in my yard. Couldn't find the owner, nicest dog you've ever met, had heartworms and tumors riddling one leg. Pretty sure his family dumped him in the country cause they couldn't afford the vet bills. Sad but good news for the dog. A friend with disposable income fell in love with him and Rocky (he would dance on his hind legs to.musicals so we called him Rocky) got the thousands of dollars of surgeries and lived out the rest of his natural life! Don't dump your dogs but sometimes there is a happy ending

The vet said the 6 month old kitty we found on our porch had marks common on animals thrown out of a MOVING car. Already dumping animals is awful, do people really have to make it worse?!?!

Why should the widow even have to go to court? It should be a given that she receive at least half. As for the son, there is a word to describe him and his lack of action for his mother...

On the other hand, we don't know their situation, so we have no way of knowing whether she was a wonderful mother who totally got screwed over, or a super abusive mother/stepmother and that he had good reason to not wanna share with her.

Doesn't the UK have similar laws to the rest of Europe? In Spain, and in a lot of European countries, the biggest part of your estate has "compulsory heirs", that is, your spouse and children *always* inherit. There's only a part (perhaps 20%) of your property you can give away freely to whoever yo want. You can only disinherit your wife or children in very few cases, for example if they tried to kill you, battered you and the like. I thought the UK was similar. I don't know if the explanation is clear. I don't really know a lot of legal terms in English.

    Emma S
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

In the UK you can leave your property to who you like in a will and legally you don't have to leave it to your spouse or children. You can leave the whole lot to charity if you want. However the courts can decide to ignore the will if it is unfair such as if there are young children who will be left with nothing. If a person dies without a will then it will go to the nearest next of kin so spouses, then children, then parents, then siblings etc. It has to be a spouse as well. Cohabitees have no automatic entitlement to their partners property if the partner dies intestate (without a will).

It is surprising that Utah, of all states, does this, but it seems when it comes to religious worldviews, the baton of extremism was succesfully passed on to the evangelicals... Apparently the mormons are not as "conservative" as their reputation. A very well needed signal just a few months after the SCOTUS decided that discrimination of LGBTQ people is protected by the constitution... Trying to change channel, turning up/down sound, AC and so on with a touchscreen is just ridiculous. You do this while driving. If you can't be on your phone because it's a driving hazard, is it safer to stop looking on the road to change these things on a screen. With a button you can keep your eyes on the road. Removing buttons presents a whole new danger on our roads.

Yes, I used to be able to change the radio station by feel while still looking at the road. Now I have to look at a screen, which takes my eyes off the road. So unnecessarily unsafe!

My wife's car has a touch screen but physical HVAC controls. Practically all of the primary functions can be done via the buttons on the steering wheel (volume, skipping tracks when playing music, cycle radio stations etc) It is not often we have to actually use the screen unless we use Car Play for sat nav in which case we put in the destination before moving or use the voice assistant. There has been a few times now when driving in the dark where I have switched the screen off as it was hurting my eyes a bit. I also set my CarPlay background to be just black as the standard wallpapers are distracting.

I drove a 2001 yellow Beetle for ten years until the transmission started slipping. Up to the end, people would stop me in parking lots and ask to look inside, wondered if it still made the same ear-popping sound with windows slightly open (yes!), and did the flower in the vase really come with the car (yes!). It was kind of like driving a brand new car every day,.

In the late '70's, I read a story in Reader's Digest about a little girl with leukemia. There was a ward of children with it at the hospital she went to. All the other children were going to die. The girl the story was about (written by her mom) was going dead due to some complications. The girl loved music. The dying children went to one of the nurses, and wanted to put on a concert for their friend. One child couldn't speak, as he had cancer in his throat. So the nurses taught him to read music. He was the pianist's page-turner. The mom (author) wrote how that was the greatest gift her daughter ever received. And yes, at the end of the story, the other children had passed. 45 years later, it still makes me teary. It's a wonderful thing that so many more people with leukemia survive. It's amazing to me, what we've learned to fight disease.

So they should. Creating a vaccine in less than a year for a new, undiscovered disease? That is an awesome feat that needs to be recognised.

They had a very strong base built already from SARS in the early 2000s, since COVID-19 is a SARS virus. Which is NOT to imply in any way that these scientists don't deserve the prize! Knowing that this is built off of existing vaccine research is important; it helped some people I know decide to get the vaccine (yay!) because they weren't worried it was rushed through. (To note I'd have gotten it either way - but being able to demonstrate to some people that it wasn't brand new helped them)

They were helped by the fact that an mRNA vaccine had been in development for other coronaviruses like flu for about 20 years. This is why a working Covid-19 vaccine was able to be produced so quickly when the virus' genome was sequenced.

Absolutely 100% The vaccines have probably saved so many lives... It's been staggering though finding out just exactly how many anti-vaxxers there are out there... Spending time on a Covid ward during the height of the Pandemic? You'd soon change your mind...

Not so many committed anti-vaxxers I suspect, it's just that they shout real loud. Lots of hangers on of course, like my daughter who claims to be an anti-,vaxxer to her friends but has kept her boosters right up to date.

Wow, a decent landlord: - The 28-year-old from Derbyshire wrote: "The ball is now rolling with my ‘affordable housing scheme’. My plan is to buy 8 properties outright and rent them out to low-income families. "One house I’ll be renting out is a 3 storey, 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with off road parking for 2 cars, fully furnished, £650 a month!" When somebody quizzed her about the plans, Rebecca replied: "I make enough profit on OnlyFans, I have no mortgages so rent payments are 100% profit except maintenance and insurance, this is a side hustle that my kids can inherit. I’m not doing it to make me more money I’m doing it [to] invest in my kids futures."

Nope. You can pay to remove ads but this has nothing to do with your personal data. If you don’t pay and consent, you’ll get targeted ads, if you don’t consent they won’t be able to use your data.

No they aren't. They're banned from using it without expressly informing you that they're doing so, which at this point shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Instead, they now give you the option to either pay 10 euros a month, for facebook, or agree to continue using the ad based trashheap that it's always been. How many people, outside of those with business pages, are going to pay for facebook. Honestly. It's the appearance of change, nothing more.

Backstory. For years, cell phone companies have sucessfully fought " right to repair " laws. They argued that trade secrets would be stolen. Then John Deers started putting chips in tractors. And they told the farmers only authorised John Deere technitians could work on them. Only problem was thrre wasnt enough techs and farmers were on waiting lists for weeks. Well, dometimes waiting a day to harvest can cause issues. So the farmers sued. And won. Courts were willing to make you wait for your phone, but not eff with the food supply. This has set s precident and right-to-repair is coming for all sorts of electronics.

Now that McDonalds has the right to repair outside of the service contract (replace filters, o-rings, adjust hoses, etc.) their rate for having working ice cream machines is up something like 95% in the US.

The machines never worked because they refused to pay the company the contract they were supposed to and so that company withheld info needed to fix them. Was a super easy part to replace. McD's was just greedy. Surprise surprise!

It's worse now with computerization but John Deere has always been like this. My dad had a John Deere tractor in the 70's and so many of it's parts were proprietary that it was a pain to get fixed, even back then.

Biden is an EXCELLENT politician. He needs to speak out about the current genocide happening on his watch but there is no one around that understands the inner workings of the government, this country, other countries, and both sides of this stupid two party system here. I realize that he’s old but he’s sharp. Yes we need to put an age cap on presidents. Will that help us rn, no. I’ll say it again: BIDEN NEEDS TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT THE CURRENT GENOCIDE IN GAZA. But no one is going to do a better job as president.

biden is milquetoast at best. He's better than trump but he is an old white man and he 100% follows what bibi wants. speaking out against the violence is pointless without action. I wish people would recognize that and stop participating in Slacktivism.

Nope, not a hero. A hero is someone who sacrifices life and limb for someone else. A very good gesture, sure, but not a hero. A hero is my nephew's step-brother who jumped in a river to save a drowning kid, even though step-brother didn't know how to swim and was afraid of water. 19yo step-brother died after saving the kid. That's a hero.

That’s true, but using your severance pay as a hostage to force you to sign away your right to sue for unlawful termination is outrageous and never should have been tolerated at all, let alone for 30+ years. What’s the point of all the labor laws of the past 85 years if they are so effortlessly circumvented?

The stigma needs to end so male victims dare to come out, so they can get the love and support they need and deserve. Seek help, people will listen and are there to help. We love you. ❤️

And how much carbon went into making the plant? And many years does this plant take to pay off this off vs for example, using trees for this role? I live in an oil town. The CCS and Blue hydrogen b******t boom that's happening right now is going to, one day, be in textbooks where the extinction of thousands of animals will have to be explained through the lense of hindsight.

I wish they'd had this when I was a kid. On a Girl Scout camping trip, the Troupe Leader whose car I was in on the long drive to the campsite (one of the other girls' moms--my mom wasn't a Leader) would open her window a tiny bit and smoke a cigarette, like every 20 minutes. I kept asking her to stop because I couldn't breathe, and she would say, "Are you allergic? Do you have asthma? No? Then no." 😭

In Bulgaria (Europe) many of the parents are still not using booster seats or proper seats for babies/kids in the car. Not a small percentage are not even using seatbelts for their children. And I've never heard any smoker around me say they stopped smoking at home/in the car with children. It's really common to see mothers with babies or small children, smoking wherever they are with the kids. Not good to wait on the personal decision for that.

Can we please ban smoking weed in the car and gassing everyone on the highway?! I don't care if people smoke it, but why are you driving when impaired?! Also, it gives me migraines and I don't smoke it or go near it for that reason.... so yeah....please?

I am happy for it to be legalised, but agree, there need to be conditions, such as not driving while impaired (it is already a limit here as far as I'm aware). I don't think it should be smoked at all, for the same reason that it can't be contained to the one person using it, as well as the fact any type of smoke anyone introduces to their own body can have harmful effects. It literally makes me sick to the stomach and gives me the runs too!

i have zero problems with indoor smoking bans, including not smoking in your own home or vehicle with children present. i have massive problems with outdoor smoking bans... i also firmly believe that freedom includes the freedom to make bad choices. because with freedom comes responsibility to be accountable for your actions. so let people smoke. just... out side.

50 Pieces Of ‘Uplifting News’ From 2023 For Those Who Are Fed Up With The Bad News Taylor Swift gives bonuses totaling over $55 million to every person working on a massive Eras tour.

I know I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion but Taylor Swift is also apparently a billionaire now and I just don't believe there's a thing called "ethical billionare". To me this remains an oxymoron. I'm not saying she's a terrible person who's never done anything right (such as these bonuses), I'm just saying - nobody needs a billion dollars. Not a single person ever for themselves. And noone makes that in their lifetime without other people being exploited (even if indirectly) along the way. And yes - I absolutely see the same isses with all the Musks, Bezozes and all those weirdos.

Ok, at the risk of down votes, I'm gonna add some context here because it's not as simple as "nobody needs a billion dollars". The nuance here is that when we say Jeff Bezos has a net worth of $161 billion dollars, it's not that he has $161 billion sitting in a bank account somewhere. Almost all of that "net worth" is based on the shares of Amazon (and other companies) that he owns. It's really that Amazon the company is "worth" hundreds of billions of dollars, and one guy happens to own 10% of the company. And even talking about how much money a company is worth is not really meaningful since it's not tied to revenue or profits at all. The value of a company is based on how much people are willing to pay for that company's stock. Now that being said, I'm actually a big believer in replacing our income tax system with a wealth tax system.

One interesting thing I never hear anybody talk about when they talk about the differences and work from home is what it did to their power bills. I know when I went from working in an office to working at home my electric bill went up a lot, because in the daytime when I was at work no one was home and all the lights were out. When I had to come home and work I had to have lights on the computer was on and questions and more toilet paper so there are expenses that if you have a relatively small commute you may not actually save money

You must be doing some very heavy computing in an area with extremely high electric prices to even notice! My power company breaks down my bill per day, and when I go on vacation or am otherwise not home for days my usage barely changes - definitely by less than $1 or even $0.50/day!

Prisoners aren't allowed cell phones, and have to reverse charges on the prison provided pay phone, which can charge whatever the state allows. The FCC attempted to cap it at 25c per min in 2013, but prison telecommunications challenged it, and won due to Trump not fighting it in court. Without the cap the average cost of a 15 min call was $17. More than twice the minimum hourly wage. Now the cap is law. It's still not cheap, at 25c a minute, but it's better than it was.

Good news, the US are slowly adopting every single European law. Here a non compete agreement is legal but must be accepted by both parties, not last more than 1 (exceptionally 2) years and the most important part, be paid. That means that even after someone leaves a company, he’ll still get paid (not a full wage) as long as they want him away from the competition.

That would be nice. The company that bought out the one I work for tried to make us all sign an agreement like that, but after everybody revolted, they put that on hiatus until the end of the year. I'll probably be quitting if they bring that document back in its original form.

All municipalities should provide free bus fare. If enough vehicle owners have to pay more in taxes to cover the fares on top of the vehicle expenses and commute stress, maybe we would get more ridership and less cars on the road.

Hydro power and nuclear power are carbon free. technology already exists. Wind and solar power are also carbon free, but are unreliable at best (wind) and unavailable for certain periods (solar). Nuclear power is the best option technology wise, sadly, many people are afraid of the technology. On the other hand many people push for more solar and wind power, which are crappy at best from the viewpoint of power distribution operators.

Our population is about 26.5 million. Net immigration last year was 450,000+. Covid screwed the numbers completely, but prior to that Chinese accounted for around 80,000, Indians 98,000, NZ and UK about 55,000. But that is countered by the fact that housing is in such short supply that there's nowhere to live. We keep accepting migrants but can't house them.

I was told a Starbucks near me told a worker who lived where there was no public transit (i.e. out by where I live) to "bring her a*s into work even if she has to walk". when she was left stranded because she was t-boned. When she couldn't (because it is a thirty plus minute drive, imagine the walk!) he told her not only was she fired, but she was blacklisted from working at Starbucks ever again. I felt like that was a bit much, but I was told it's par for the course.
