I can tell you, I had 4 military dogs in my platoon, they are strict with dog handlers and working dogs. The dogs also had AC kennels, dog booties, dog sunglasses, ice vests and short working hours. A lot of money goes into training these dogs and they are an invaluable asset to the members in their unit. They did get royal treatment, but it’s needed to keep them safe and happy.
I read it costs approximately 15k to train a service dog. Considering military dogs have much more training, I’m sure it is a very big investment. I’ve seen videos of military dogs in action and my mind is blown every time!
Load More Replies...This shows how scary this world is getting specially "human species"
Load More Replies...Okay, but....shouldn't officers get in *more* trouble for abusing subordinates?
Something people who abuse animals don’t think about: If the handler mistreats their dog, then long before their CO discovers it, the dog can pay them back by NOT detecting the landmine that directly in their path. Too bad the dog can’t talk and make that threat when the handler raises a hand to them. Same goes for any animal being mistreated.
The fact that they have to do it at all is the problem. Abusers should be treated harshly.
There is no assumption that the handler will ever abuse the dog. It is just some thing someone at some point settled on, and so it is. And everyone is fine with it because soldiers would rather the dog be their senior than many humans.
Load More Replies...Sooooo this means that military personnel can abuse others ranked LOWER than them without consequence?
No what it means, is that the dog is treated with the respect that comes from their rank. If a higher ranking person abuses a lower ranking person, they can get anything from an Article 15 (basically a misdemeanor) to a Court Martial (basically a felony). If a military dog is mistreated by his handler, the same applies. Usually if the handler mistreated the dog, the dog has their own ways of getting even, and the dog could be reassigned to another handler. Then the handler will be investigated and could have charges brought against them.
Load More Replies...Although it makes me very sad and infuriated that this kind of measure **needs** to be put in place to avoid abuse, I'm glad it's there. Thank you, for whomever implemented this.
Wouldn't that mean they can't order the dog to do things? I doubt there would be a lot of intentional abuse either way. I've known cops with active and retired dogs, only met a couple of military dogs - but in all cases it seemed like the owners / handlers genuinely cared about them. One could argue the bigger "abuse" comes from just doing their job. Attack people, find explosives and so on. Obviously it depends on what tasks the individual dog is trained for.
Dog handler programs are incredibly tough to get into. A lot of people want in, but it's super selective, and there is a lot of psychological testing involved to ensure that the person will work well with the animal and treat them kindly. I know people who tried for a decade or more to get into police or military dog handler programs.

True; this happened when our rescue dog Martha died last year. It was a nice surprise.
Yes,it's true. Our rescue pit bull mix W***y died in June. I called Chewy to.cancel his medication order and ended up on the phone with a customer representative for an hour telling her all about him and crying. Chewy sent flowers a day or so later with a caring note from the Chewy family and the representatives name on it as well.i had no idea they would do those things. So unexpected and wonderful!
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know how hard that is.

They are even better than that. My friend's husband (also my friend) died suddenly and I took in their dogs for a period of time. Grieving, and now with 5 dogs and very little food I called Chewy to see how fast it could be delivered. I was shocked to receive flowers from them. They are the most incredible company with very caring employees.
This is true, when we lost our cat the day I placed an order, I called to try and cancel it before it shipped but it was too late, they told me to donate the food and reimbursed me. The beautiful bouquet came when I least expected and it brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face for the first time in a week since she passed. I was able to donate the food to the shelter we adopted her from. Recommended Chewy to every pet owner I know!
I was one of the first to sign up and use Chewy Canada, and they sent me a hand painted picture of my dog as a thank you!
We LOVE Chewy. When one of my daughters pets passed they asked her for photos and they painted faces of all her pets on ceramic tiles.
To all of you Pandas who have lost a pet, I'm so sorry for your loss. Much love and a virtual hug, if you want.
Many of us love diving into intriguing facts and uncovering the secrets of the world around us. And while that’s great, wouldn’t it be fascinating to discover new things about the planet we call home? There are so many aspects of Earth that make it endlessly fascinating.
For instance, Earth’s insides aren’t solid; they have a gooey, semi-solid consistency thanks to intense heat and pressure. This “squishy” mantle lets the Earth’s crust shift around, leading to all those plate tectonics, volcanic eruptions, and the occasional earthquake.
Richard Marquand is awesome. The whole "Beauty = Goodness" trope is one of the major things that allow truly awful people to have power. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've heard (in disgust) comments like "Oh, but s/he's so good-looking. Surely they couldn't do [terrible thing]" Or... they're given credit for things just 'because they say so.'
Pretty on the outside, 100% fugly on the inside. Too bad such rotten stinking foul garbage sometimes comes with such pretty wrapping paper hiding it.

That would truly make “trickle down economics” work. Too bad all wealthy people want to do is make even more money they’ll never be able to spend, and expand out to buying s much power and clout they can, instead of funneling a healthy percentage of their wealth to those less fortunate. You know, if life has been that good to you, instead of hoarding it, you should be paying it forward by sharing it at every opportunity, so life can be good to others who didn’t have your advantages and plain old good dumb luck.

These amounts are a tiny drop in the ocean of their wealth
Two footballers that I do not like because of how cocky they are but I can't deny the good they do...
Load More Replies...Not hating on the act. This is amazing. But the scale at which the wealthy could do good and choose not to is infuriating. At $83K, a person of this wealth could do this 10x per year, every year, and the $830K would be a rounding error in their net income. Wealthy people do draw dropping generous stuff all the time, but our economy is so jacked up, it's still such a negligible part of their net worth. Mackenzie Scott has it right.
It's also fũcked up a charity auction was needed to pay for medical care

Antarctica is like Earth’s ultimate freezer, way bigger than Greenland and packed with so much ice that it holds about 70% of our planet’s freshwater. Antarctica also boasts the biggest ice sheet on the planet, packed with an astonishing 30 million cubic kilometers of ice. This means that any changes in the ice sheet can have a ripple effect on global sea levels and ocean currents.

She was running around my car and my other sons truck and decided to go into the kennel. I grabbed the bucket to clean it and give her water and some food. I had an appt and had to go pick my son up from the hospital. When we got home she had pushed out a section of the chain link and took off. We looked for her and I put food out for about 8 mos. We went and got her brother hoping she wouldn't be scared and I could get her. We literally hadn't seen her in over a year when the shelter called me saying they had her and did I want her. She was covered in huge matts and about 50 ticks. I slowly used scissors and my dog razor for several days before I was able to give her a bath. She was gone for 2 years and was trapped near my house....she is out miracle pup.

So even thousands of years ago, dogs only live 15 years? All that breed selection, and they didn't "add in" longer lifespans?
Breeding in a longer lifespan is nearly impossible. When you know which dog is right for breeding, they already are way to old to breed.
Load More Replies...The moon is drifting away at a slow but steady pace from our planet—about 4 centimeters per year! This happens because the moon’s gravity pulls on Earth’s oceans, creating a watery bulge on the side that faces it.
This bulge then pulls back on the moon, causing it to move a bit farther away each year. While we might not see the difference day to day, over millions of years, this gentle shift can have some pretty intriguing effects on how quickly the planet spins. Can you imagine having just 200 days in a year?
Dogs have also developed that laughing/smiling facial expression by observing their humans. Bared teeth in the animal world usually means aggression, not happiness, so wild animals do not smile. But a domesticated companion animal like a dog would come to understand that bared teeth in humans is a good thing, so when they’re around us they mimic the look, counterintuitive as it is for an animal.
It goes deeper than that; selective breeding plays a big part. We are more inclined to breed pets from the friendliest animals, and dogs that have a natural inclination to 'smile' are more likely to produce young that do the same. This is why more dogs today 'smile' than ever before.
Load More Replies...Maybe this is why ours rolls around on her back making funny noises so often. She knows it always makes us smile and go over to make a fuss of her!

I have a friend from Juarez who was always laughing about how popular this cartoon is in El Paso and Juarez, while Anglos find it really racist. I finally asked him why they liked it, and he said, "Is there any other show from that time that shows a Mexican character outsmarting all the gringos?"

Do not mess with actors known for martial arts roles. They’re not pretending.
A woman was assaulted in Brazil walking home. She got the attacker into a choke hold and held him until police arrived. Before attacking someone, make sure they're not a professional MMA fighter walking home from the dojo.
Old but the same situation. Brandon Lee, son of martial artist Bruce Lee (in case you live under a rock and don't know who that is) came home to a robber being in his house. He chased the robber around the house, the robber took a knife from the kitchen. Brandon took the knife away and got a little scar on his thumb (in the clip he can't see where it was, so probably on the smaller side) the robber landed in the hospital and then jail for 2years. Again from the clip, Brandon amuses himself with excatly how the robber didn't realise whos house he robbed, because he had several big poster of him and his father TOGHETER on the walls. Source: https://youtu.be/AGt4WHWeK84?si=WDAzrneQ5WjxKoTt RIP Brandon Lee, gone to soon and mentioned alot right now with the remake of The Crow.
Little known fact... Donnie Yen's mum made him also learn to play cello as he was doing his martial arts training. She didn't want him hanging with a rough crowd, and she wanted him to learn a discipline that did not involve violence. She also insisted he maintain high grades. Perhaps that sounds demanding, but she raised a good man.
Of course, Donnie had the advantage that the attackers followed the movie tradition of only attacking Donnie one at a time rather than all at once
No, it's really hard fighting in a group. You get in the way of the others and might be better off alone. If you're wrestling, you might have an advantage, but as soon as punches are thrown, the guys are only in your way.

Also a walker/sitter and I think they do. I've had clients tell me they mention my name and their pets get excited or they played a video I shared (like when used my nieces to socialize a client's puppy and sent her video of them playing) and their pet ran around looking for me.

Sounds too good to be true (Oh, I HOPE it is though!!!). I wonder if these researchers slightly embellish their findings sometimes to make us humans feel better.
I think any animal that dreams, including humans, mostly dream about things that are in their world. It's the brain processing the various thoughts and experiences and sorting memories and such. I assume it would be similar for animals. Pets may have "lesser" brains but they still process stuff and tuck it away. Hence the reason an abused dog learns to be skiddish or a trained dog or horse remembers tricks and jumps and gaits.

So my dad was working 12 hour days to pay the bills and mortgage. He never changed a nappy but that doesn't mean he was a deadbeat dad he was just a hard working dad.
I think we are technically millennials... my husband stayed home after my maternity leave and slept with my son on his chest every night, on the couch, just so I could sleep, work full time and pump breast milk. Baby #2 had health issues and he again stayed home and was the only one who could calm her. Now they are older and I went to part time and he went back to full time and its a joint effort.
I am in my early 40's and apparently my father never changed my nappy (diaper) even once.
THIS. And this is how we break the cycle of toxic masculinity. Women are avoiding toxic men and finding men who are real partners, and showing their children how to be better people.
my father was born in 1936 and in 1962 he was the first man in our village to go for a walk with a sister in a baby carriage. he changed diapers and cooked. many men of his generation didn't think he was a real man. he trained as a locksmith and worked as a foreman in an industrial company, but because he also looked after us children, he wasn't a real man in the eyes of many other men. by the way, he was born in germany and we lived in east germany. his brother did the same thing, but he lived in a town where it wasn't as noticeable as in a village.

It’s not just any book, it goes through a review process first.

Small wonder they have so few people in prison - and so few violent criminals.
That’s so cute 😊 my grandma forgot my address once so she simply addressed a parcel “(my name) at (my previous place of work) in (my town).” I live in such a small town that the postal workers recognized who I was and somehow knew I’d actually changed jobs. Found the parcel sitting at my desk at my new job when I went into work the next day. Love small communities for that kind of stuff.
I have an aunt close to my age. I wrote her a letter addressed with only her nickname. She got it.
This works in the US too, a good description or map is acceptable. For example, first right after mile marker 41, 2nd house. It just has to be clear.
Not sure that would work if the recipient lives in a block of apartments in a large city, but I did once get a letter that was addressed to Marina, in the yellow house on south 48th street!

Our dog was an outside dog. I would brush him in the spring to get rid of winter coat(shepard/lab). He would respond by using his teeth to "groom" my goatee.
Horses return scritches and understand quickly to only use the lips and not the teeth
Mine does the nudge with his head and then will put his head in your lap. Only does the paw thing when playing
My dog gives me a gentle lick to say thanks after I give her water or food she likes, or when I give her really good scratches.
My daughter’s chocolate lab puts his arm around my arm when I pet him
I am not a pet person, which doesn't mean I dislike animals. I just spent a few days with a very dear friend. She warned me that she wasn't the greatest housekeeper (she was right), but that's not why I was there. She has two little dogs, Daisy & Lilly. Lovely creatures. Daisy immediately took a liking to me. You know what? The house smelled of dog and I was covered in pet hair. And I did not give one f*ck.

Hmm, I work from home and one of our dogs (who's been lying there behind me most of the day) knows when my shift is almost over.
My girl passed away in 2022 and after spending 2 years working from home she knew when it was 2:55. She would ask for the door, do her business and come back in for 3:00 nap. My boy, that I adopted in 2022, started doing the same thing at the same time. Their internal clocks are amazing.
Load More Replies...Or maybe they have good internal clocks? Young boy me had a pet rat. My mom said most days it would sleep in it's cage most of the day, then get active and start hanging on the cage door 10-15 minutes before I got home from school. Cage was in my room and I doubt my scent in the room changed much during the day.
I've already seen a documentary about this. There was a camera filming the dog sleeping in the house, and a camera filming the human at work. When the human gets up and says, "Okay, the day is over, I'm going home." Immediately, we see the dog get up and wait at the door 😭💘
My dog will be at the front door waiting for my partner roughly the same time every day
That would definitely explain why my dog would always start getting excited at the same time every weekday afternoon.
My dogs always waited at the front door starting 10 minutes before I arrived home. I have wonderful parents who insisted I drop them off at their home in the mornings and collected them on my way home at night so they would not be alone all day. My parents always told me they knew exactly when I was coming to collect my babies, it was so damned cute.
Is it possible that since we look at a clock so much, dogs have the ability to realize where the hands are when they need to? Or what digits are on a digital clock?

I bet that made Jay Leno’s day and both will remember that moment forever!
A lad called Tom as in trouble in school for telling lies. His mother was called in to deal with it. She explained to the teacher that Tom's uncle was indeed Superman. A while later, Henry Cavall walked into school with his nephew, Tom.
There is even a picture of them together in the wild web.

Too bad a******s like that aren’t self-aware enough to realize they’re not being fair to the animal, and should find their unwanted pet another home; one where they will be a much loved and much appreciated full and equal member of the family. Then again, they don’t even have the decency to do that for the people in their lives, so…
I've seen a lot of clips showing that. Had heard they have the smarts of a 3yr old and for sure would understand 'fair' and 'not fair' treatment.
Long ago I realized that I could never have more than two dogs... Because I only have two hands to pet them, equally, at the same time, with.

Japan has so many ancient buildings that are still around. I love watching the Japanese station on my Public Television ( in america)
A theory is the culture of India and Africa is highly spiritual based (not nessisarily religious), so when people's brains misread visual and audio information with schizophrenia, they are more likely to pass it off as a benign spirit or ghost of loved one. In western cultures and religions, seeing things others can't is a negative experience because they are told "it's not there" or "It's evil", which is scary. American media also has a lot to do with this since it highlights dangers and makes it sound like those dangers are coming for you (why I can't watch any news anymore)
American media ("news" programs) is pretty fear-based. I think they took the "human negativity bias" to a whole new level
Load More Replies...The hallucinations are also affected by the environment and technological advances around us. Affected people used to hear voices coming from the gas pipes feeding gas supplies to houses, then when radios were more common, they became the source of auditory hallucinations. Then television sets, or overhead pylons became the source, then computers and WiFi. In cultures with a strongly prevalent religious faith, the voices are more likely to be angels, gods or demons. In more secular countries, it's celebrities or politicians 'speaking' directly to the patient. The world around you shapes the hallucinations you experience.
Why are they comparing two countries with a continent full of countries?
And maybe population factor. India is densely populated country. And whole continent od America might ve lesser populated then summing up these 2 countries idk.maybe it can be a factor

How can you say this a fact when you can't hear the voices in someone else's head.
In Africa, I know that people with schizophrenia are not put into hospitals. Instead, they live in villages with other people struggling with mental illness and mental health workers. So their experience of schizophrenia is much different than in the US, where they are involuntarily locked away and drugged in depressing and sometimes violent hospital wards. It is no surprised that their hallucinations are much different.
Same goes for cats, unless they decide to cuddle up on top of your face. Otherwise, it’s like hugging a stuffed animal as a child. Only the stuffed animal is warm and breathing—-and will make sure you’re awake at their normal breakfast time.

Speaking from a life-long career in education, it's the teachers who need the wine. Four glasses sounds like a good start.

Teaching hand signals alongside spoken commands is something every dog owner should do, it's very helpful. Also dogs tend to be more pleasent to be around than 2½ year old humans
I taught my dog the command, 'paws on the pavement'. Most of the time she was good and would stop by the kerbside. Occasionally, she'd walk into the road. This is when 'paws on the pavement' was used. She would return to me, and would not step onto the road until I gave the okay. Quite a number of people laughed when they heard the command, and were then surprised when the lovely hound obeyed.
There is a guy on TikTok that has taught his dog how to “read”. The dog will look at the flash card and do the command on them. To prove he wasn’t just memorizing the order of commands he mixed up the cards and the dog was still able to “read” them
We use hand signals with our dog, it's great coz in public you don't have to say a thing and it blows people's minds
One of my dogs understands particular phrases because that's how I've always interacted with her (rather than using individual words). If she drops her ball too far from me and I say "I can't reach it" she'll move it closer. If I need her to wait I say "You stay there" and she waits. Obviously she doesn't understand "sentences" as such, just the sounds associated with them, but still... it feels like more of a conversation!
I teach my dogs and cats "Excuse me" as a cue to clear a path. Someone once commented it seemed excessively polite, but the phrase choice is arbitrary and it's what I'd rather have in my life than for instance "Gerrout the way nahw!" (South London for "now").
The point is that one can still overeat on healthy food. Too many calories are simply too many calories. Whether they come from healthy food or not. (can't recommend this diet though...). That is why cheating on a diet is so bad. Like : I've eaten only healthy things - now I deserve a snack. Forgetting that you already had the calorie intake of the day. Or other way around : I had had my food for today, yet, this ( whatever healthy food / fruit) is healthy. Yes, it is - yet, is makes the calorie intake go up - and therefore you are not losing weight. That is OP's point.

Just like the people you know, but aren’t close to, who always brag at every opportunity that they and their SO never argue and are always happy. B******t. They’re either lying through their teeth, 100% deluded and in need of therapy, or they’re too un-self aware to realize they’re sitting on a powder keg that’s going to explode any minute now. People in healthy relationships will inevitably disagree about something. You are two separate people, not clones, so you will have differences of perception and opinion. Healthy couples get them out in the open, clear the air, and accept those differences (unless of course, one of the differences is of a type that is a real deal breaker). Not having it out means it will fester, and explode unexpectedly—-and potentially dangerously—-when one partner has finally had enough.

So Emma was old enough to drink four years before she was born. OK...
For Pandas who didn't get this... In 1991 an embryo is frozen and donated. A woman who was born in 1992 grew up to be 25 and wanted to have a baby but couldn't. That woman became the recipient of the still frozen embrio which had by this time been frozen for 26 years. The baby is born and named Emma. So Emma's biological make-up is scientifically already 26 years old before birth, but the child "Emma" is only a newborn who is born to her surrogate mother of 25 years of age.
The article says embryo was frozen in ‘92 and the mother was born in ‘91.

It used to be that to get a good job you just had to leave secondary school with good exam results, then that changed to you needed to go to tertiary education and get a batchelors degree. Then you needed a batchelors degree with honours and now the majority of students aren't even attempting to get a job until they have a masters. Meanwhile, educators and employers are continually reporting that standards in education are dropping and most education leavers are unprepared to enter the workforce.
"Ahh, god bless america!" (more like "god save america... from itself")
Best educated is pretty vague. Is the problem that they all have degrees in something nearly useless, like art studies?
Worst paid by what metrics though? This doesn't seem like it would hold up against great depression or reconstruction. During slavery, huge portions of the population were t paid at all. Sharecroppers essentially paid to work. If you worked in a factory during the industrial revolution you could work from childhood and never have enough to leave the factory housing. This statistics just doesn't mean much without context

We would travel nine hours to visit family in my husband's hometown. We'd stay a couple of days and then go to an NFL game. We'd stay in the city for a couple more days and then go to a small town in our home state, rent a cabin and go fishing. So yeah, about eight days. But the sequence was the perfect part. We got to see family (but couldn't stay too long, had to get to the game...), had the excitement of a pro game and big city and then a few quiet days in nature. Perfect!

Every person with Misophonia is different https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/misophonia-sounds-really-make-crazy-2017042111534 https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24460-misophonia
So just being highly irritated and irrationally angry for no other reason but people are making noises is not related to the disorder?
Load More Replies...I declare bs on at least some.of the detail. Nobody wants to hear you smacking your lips or eating cake with your mouth open.
It's actually called a type of "neurodiversity" calling it a "disorder" makes it sound like something is wrong with a person. (I have ADHD and if someone said I had a disorder I would correct them *Immediately*)
Please, please... more of this kind of content! I'd rather learn interesting facts than read about so much personal drama that seems to be a subbing for old -school soap operas
Jumping Jellyfishes, oh yes! I'm not at all interested in what Bianca Censori didn't wear to day. I don't want to see adverts styled to look like an article. But thought-provoking snippets, cool photographs, and interesting facts, all are good.
Load More Replies...Some of these "facts" are patently false. Instagram "facts", like Bored Panda "facts" are too often factoids (an item of unreliable information that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact): entertaining but do your due diligence before believing them.
Yeah, I usually learn more from the comments (and my own research, if so inclined), but the posts are a nice jumping off point.
