Spain is the fourth-largest country in Europe. It has everything from stone castles and sophisticated cities to flat plains, and snowcapped mountains, all of which have made it a favored travel destination.
So, to show our love for it, we at Bored Panda put together a list of photos that accentuate Spain's geographical and cultural diversity.
Taken both by locals and tourists, these images paint an accurate picture of what it's like to live in or visit this distinct place on Earth.

Shade On A Street In Jerez, Spain
Not to mention it usually feels allot cooler under natural shade vs man made materials.
Yea definitely. I live up a mountain and when it’s hot at work the minute I get almost to the top where trees cover the road it drops like 10 degrees

We have an ice cream flavour in Germany that's called Malaga. It has raisins and alcohol. Edit: So, I googled it and it has Cream, sugar, eggs and raisins that have been soaked in a sweet wine called Malaga LOL (but store bought versions can have the wine substituted with rum - to make it cheaper I suppose)
It is a bit like rum raisin we can get in the UK? Not claiming it originated in the UK by the way - before that gets leapt on.

In Spanish-Speaking Countries, The Tooth Fairy Is A Mouse (Ratoncito Pérez). This Is My Dentist's Office
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I have a game where there's a dentist and in a secret room there's a tiny mouse with a tooth strapped to its back and I understand why now
As a British family whose kids were born in Spain it was a bit of a dilemma to agree on who would be collecting the newly fallen out teeth. Also Raton Perez brings toys not money unlike the tooth fairy.
In Sweden we had a cartoon called The Milktooth Mice! It was about the same thing :3
I'd be paying to much attention to the door waiting for it to open to be worrying about what the dentist was doing.
Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) In Ronda, Spain Is One Of The Most Beautiful Places On Earth
yea, the "new bridge" which is almost 230 years old. Construction started in 1759 and finished in 1793. It's new in comparison to two other bridges over the chasm, one dating to the 16th century and the other to the12th.
My fear of heights is kicking in from just looking at it
Yep. I'm having the same problem. I can appreciate its beauty though.
Load More Replies...This is on a whole other level of beautiful. Living there must be a dream come true
Indeed, the country's history is as rich as it gets. Remains of Stone Age populations dating back some 35,000 years have been found all throughout Spain.
Celtic people arrived there in the 9th century BCE, followed by the Romans, who dominated Spain from around 200 BCE until the Visigoth invasion in the early 5th century CE.
In the early 8th century, most of the peninsula fell to Muslims (Moors) from North Africa, and it remained under their control until it was gradually reconquered by the Christian kingdoms of Castile, Aragon, and Portugal.

Amazing .... no words could discribe the beauty of this waterfall😍🥰
Looks like the border between Spain and France. French side is the North face of the Pyrenées so it's always colder and wetter than Spanish side. I used to go to Spain every summer by these mountain roads and I can't remember not having some rain on the French side... followed by a shining sun once I crossed the border.

Setenil De Las Bodegas, A Town In Southern Spain, Known For Its Whitewashed Houses Built Into The Surrounding Cliffs
In Salzburger Altstadt (Old City of Salzburg, Austria), many of the houses have been built with their back against Mönchsberg. There is a rather unique profession there named 'Bergputzer' (mountain patcher/mender) who climb down the city side of the cliff looking for cracks to seal. If water seeps into these cracks, it will turn to ice in the winter and expand, risking huge blocks of stone to be broken off and falling down on the houses beneath it. I wonder if the same risk and profession exist in the city pictured.
In southern Spain, winters are too mild for ice formation

Spain was reunited in 1479 following the marriage of Ferdinand II (of Aragon) and Isabella I (of Castile). The last Muslim kingdom, Granada, was regained in 1492, and at about this time Spain established a colonial empire in the Americas.
The country became a republic in 1931 but a civil war ravaged the country from 1936 to 1939 and ended in victory for the Nationalists under Gen. Francisco Franco, who ruled as a dictator until his death in 1975. His successor as head of state, Juan Carlos I, restored the monarchy with his accession to the throne; a new constitution in 1978 established a constitutional monarchy.

This Church Has Been Under Construction Since 1882 - The Basílica De La Sagrada Família In Barcelona, Spain
138 years and is set to finish in 2026.
Well lol, the architect ( Gaudí ) died, after he kicked the bucket no One had any idea of how to finish it lol, especially because his " miniatures " of the cathedral where either robbed or destroyed ( i don't remember all the details ) still, its supose to be done by 2026, but then again it was supose to be done in early 2000s then i believe was 2016 or something like that, then 2020 or 2022, now its 2026.....lol

We went to Barca several years ago. I wasn't feeling well due to medication side effects and am not a "church" person at all, so I was really downer on going to see Sagrada Familia. I was SOOOO wrong. It's one of the most fascinating buildings I've ever seen, and the interior is like a normal church inside of of fairy tale. Truly a great experience and one I'd like to have again when I'm not churlish and nauseated.
I highly recommend visiting in the evening when most of the tourist crowds have left. The fading sunlight filtering through the stained glass makes the interior of the church look like it has been painted in rainbow hues. Truly amazing. Antoni Gaudí was such an amazing architect and artist.
Thanks for writing this Loki. Saved me the keystrokes

A Lady in London thinks you can see the country at various times of the year, but it depends on where you go.

"Madrid and Barcelona can get busy in the summer season, so I like visiting them in the winter. The Basque country is great in the summer, as cities like San Sebastian have great beaches (not to mention the food!)."

El Marco, The Tiny Bridge Between Spain And Portugal, Is The Smallest International Bridge In The World. It Has A Length Of 3.2 Meters
I feel I should point out that this is not the ONLY way from Spain to Portugal! Lol
It isn´t. It´s not even a "formal" border but it was always an open one. Even when the actual borders where supposedly watched and you had to identify yourself to move between countries these always existed. ......There are a couple of those alongside the country where people just always crossed over and basically spoke the same language (a mix between Portuguese and the local Spanish dialect).

Food is a strong foundation of Spanish culture. The blend of Arab, Roman, Jewish, and Mediterranean cuisine results in a very exciting mix of ingredients and flavors.
Predominant ingredients of Spanish gastronomy include garlic, tomato, pepper, potatoes, beans, and curated meats.
The country produces large quantities of high-quality olive oil and wine.
Spanish people enjoy a style of appetizer and snack known as tapas. Las tapas are usually a collection of small preparations like cold cuts, cheeses, croquetas (croquettes), calamares (squid), and more.

This Cathedral In Murcia, Spain Has A 3D Model For Blind People To Touch And Feel What The Cathedral Looks Like
There's a fabulous model outside the cathedral in València too, so you can appreciate the structure. It never occurred to me that it could be for the blind as it's so interesting for everyone. And the train station also has a model inside, as it's a really beautiful old building, that's not usually appreciated when you're rushing for a train. I wonder if all Spanish cities do this?
Should be an international law. So blind people get more enjoyment out of their visits.
Load More Replies...The idea is great but isn't having the 3D models for blind people a normal thing? I see models like this one rather often in my country, I always thought that it's normal to have one near important historical objects.

A 100-Year-Old Church In Spain Converted Into A Skatepark
I'm not sure about the skatepark but imho it would be a great idea to transform less used churches into friendly places for people to meet or hanging out. Less and less people are religious so why waste a great architecture if you can create a safe, cozy space out of it? Like, you know, it would be great to have a wonderous architecture, stained glasses and whatnot AND comfy chairs and coffee.
There are hundreds of places to sit and drink coffee. This is a safe AND legal place for folks to come together to practice their craft. It's amazing.

Trams In Seville (Spain) Have Fast Charging Batteries, Therefore Not Needing Catenaries Along The Track. The Trams Charge For About 15 Seconds Every Stop
It's not fast charging batteries. Electricity comes through the rails only when then train is above thus making is safe for pedestrians. Bordeaux was the first city in Europe (and maybe in the World) to use that system.

Imagine all the exhaust and extra dirt being kicked up and spread around! The smell. The noise. The dust! It looks cool in the picture but in reality it is probably a nightmare 😬
Load More Replies...I'm sure the architects and builders accounted for the noise; I'm more curious about vibration. Even though I'm sure they probably accounted for that too, I wonder if they could have eliminated all vibration?
Yeah, because architects in the 60s were good at soundproofing? They certainly weren't in my city in the 70s. I live in an apartment building built in '76 and the soundproofing absolutely sucks. I can hear my neighbours phone buzz from the other side of the walls and I keep thinking it's mine and get up to check to see if I got a text and I didn't. I'm also at the back of the building, directly over a parking lot and the people who park right under my living room (well, technically my "everything room", as I'm in a bachelor apartment - no bedroom, I sleep mere feet away from my fridge 🙄😒) idle for too long before driving away and don't back into their parking spot, so they take longer to turn around before leaving the parking lot. I hate it!

Blossoms In Barcelona
Plaza De España - Seville, Spain (Summer 2019)
It was built for the Spanish-American World Exposition of 1929, designed to include typical architectural features and materials from all the represented regions of Spain. In the Francoist era it fell in severe disrepair, made worse by the frankly shoddy construction of some parts of the decoration and by the looting of the mosaics by locals and tourists. It has recently been fully restored, and it is now an unmissable part of the touristic appeal of the city. Fun facts, it hosted the filming of several movie, including the Star Wars prequels and Sasha Baron Cohen "The Dictator".

Yep. Look at the swastika. A peace symbol turned into literally the worst symbol in our history.
Load More Replies...For a second I was thinking that it's a kkk parade or something. Can someone explain me what's the story with their masks?
They are penitent, called nazarenos (or other regional names). The mask is part of their tradition. It is a way to show contrition and humility, or something like that.

This Paper Cutout In My Hotel In Madrid That Changes Color If You Smoke In Your Room
I once stayed at a motel where the only room available was a smoking okay room. I was a smoker at the time, but never smoked indoors. It reeked. It was utterly foul. I woke up the next morning practically gasping for breath, decades of smokers past all coughing at me. It felt like a lead elephant was standing on my chest. I gave up smoking for six months after that.
I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I'm not a smoker myself and yes I get that smoking is probably forbidden there, yet... There's something not right with making a thing that seems friendly but it's purpose is to catch you misbehaving and probably make you pay a fee. Dunno, it makes me feel uneasy, somehow.
Better this that have the smoke alarm go off and trigger the fire alarm causing it to disturb EVERYONE... This happened often in the Marriott that I worked at for 7 years. It's not fun to get a call at 3am because someone was too lazy to walk outside.

For us, living in Spain, snowdrifts, snow-covered palm and orange trees, fir branches collapsed under the weight of snow, completely stopped traffic, snowmen, frozen ponds in a park with ducks frozen in them, and skiing is something extraordinary that happens once in a lifetime.
Ducks frozen IN the ice? If that's true, please tell me they weren't left there like that.
They were most likely fine, I adopted a duck from a rescue that was found frozen to a road and was missing part of its nails & toes, but I think it’s less likely to happen on a pond.

I Did The Camino De Santiago De Compostela Across Galicia In The Northern Part Of Spain. When You Reach The End, You Arrive At The Cathedral De Santiago
The ancient walled city of Lugo which you pass through. This city is deeply rooted in roman and Celtic culture/history. El cathedral de Santiago. The bottom half is built with a roman architecture influence. The top half is of the baroque architecture style. Everyone should do this pilgrimage at some point in their lives, even if they aren’t Catholic.
For the majority of pilgrims the end of their pilgrimage is at Plaza de Obradoiro in front of the Cathedral where they can receive their official certificate. Some pilgrims say the true ending point is the gorgeous Finisterre along the Galician coast. However, as you mentioned there are other routes that take you to different “end locations”. For example, The Le Puy Way ends in St.Jean Pied de Port.
