Growing up, I loved going to school. I enjoyed learning, socializing with friends and participating in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. But when I think back on my days as a student, I remember the people and experiences fondly. However, I do not feel the same way about the environment I was in.
My high school was constantly under construction while I attended, and it was anything but pleasant. Dust was everywhere, loud drilling occurred all day long, and bizarre routes between buildings meant that I was almost always running late for class.
But education should be enjoyable! And thankfully, there are plenty of schools and universities out there that actually prioritize creating an exciting learning environment. Bored Panda has scoured the internet to find photos of the most interesting and brilliant things students have spotted in their schools, so we've gathered some of their best finds down below!

Saw This In A Classroom After Class
Say Hello To My University's Library Cat
It would be great if cats were allowed in more places. Schools could have time out areas where a child, teen, or teacher could take a few moments to calm down by petting a cat, hold a cat on their lap, or just sit and watch one napping. I say AREA and not room because it would not be safe for the cat around some people.
I wouldn't be able to get anything done. Or sound intelligent, given that my first reaction was to go "kitty kitty kitty!"
There are plenty of days when I’m frustrated with being an adult, often when it comes time to pay rent or buy my own groceries. But I have to admit that I’m very thankful to be done with my school days. I had a great time, and I made some amazing friends. But if I had the chance to go back in time and do it all again, you couldn’t pay me enough to trade in the freedom I have now.
According to a 2022 study from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and the Yale Child Study Center, almost three quarters of students report having negative feelings towards school. And when asked to rank the emotions that they most commonly feel, students most often reported feeling tired, stressed, bored and calm. Happiness came next.
University’s Way Of Showing How To Correctly Wear Your Mask
So funny! How about one for not using your phone on speaker around other people? Nobody wants to be the one to be told that or even to be the one to mention it, but a funny sign might get someone to realize it's them the sign is meant for.

I saw a t-shirt that said "If they can ban books, then they damn well can ban assault rifles". I was so mad that they didn't have it in my size!

My argument for parents wanting to ban books: Tell your kid not to read it. Done and done. Oh you want to ban other peoples children from reading something? I think their parents should decide that, don't you? Who do you think you are telling me what my child can or cannot read?
This is more important than ever when states like Oklahoma are banning and censoring LGBTQIA+ literature and literature by people of color and instead enforcing that the Bible be taught in all schools.
Bible will be optional, sorry fo it is really boring.. I can never go past opening with so many begat.

Taken from google: Some Americans did not view Huck as a positive role model for young readers. Immediately after publication, the book was banned on the recommendation of public commissioners in Concord, Massachusetts, who described it as racist, coarse, trashy, inelegant, irreligious, obsolete, inaccurate, and mindless.
Load More Replies...No books should be banned. Period. Banning one work, regardless of the reason, simply opens the door for others to ban something else, because "I don't like it", or "I don't understand it" .
Our School’s Service Dog, Lucy, Made It Into The Staff Page Of The Yearbook
It makes sense that so many students don’t have glowing reviews about their time in school. Despite how many adults tell kids and teens that they’re in the best years of their lives, it often doesn’t feel like that. One fifth of students experience bullying, and only 50% of girls in 9th grade would describe themselves as confident. Being a kid should be carefree and easy, but the reality is that it’s not all sunshine and roses for everyone.
And being a teen is almost always worse. KFF reports that one fifth of teens report having symptoms of anxiety or depression, and 20% admit that they’re not getting the therapy they need due to the cost, being scared of what others may think and simply because they don’t know how or where to go for help.
There Is A Free “Period Pack” At My School For Girls Who Are Unprepared For Their Periods
Every school needs this. Scotland was the first country to make menstrual products free in public places like libraries and schools to help end period poverty.
We could get free period product from the school nurse if we needed them. It was a bit awkward though, and would have preferred this instead.
Load More Replies...Every store, restaurant, school, church, airport, etc needs this! I can't tell you how many time I've been unprepared at school and had to stick toilet paper in my undergarments. It is soooo uncomfortable.😣
Share the Dignity have collection boxes outside a lot of supermarkets in Australia so you can donate products. I think the placement is a great idea as it reminds you as you go in that you want to buy donations, and it avoids my common practice of having donations sitting in the car for ages because you forget to take them with you.
My professional organization collects packs as our charitable contribution for donation to family domestic abuse centers. The centers can't keep up with the need for them. I can't imagine having to break from domestic abuse, run from my family's abuser, and then have to worry about paying for pads.

This School In Vancouver, BC (Canada) Installed A Slide, So Kids Can Take That Instead Of The Stairs To Leave The School
Reason 5623 why Canada ROCKS!! Happy Canada Day fellow Canadians
A few kindergartens round our way have this, and I've always wanted to go to a parents' evening there!
How I wish we had that when I was in school. But back then girls had to were dresses.
Born and raised in Washington State, aka Canada's step state. We often look at all the cool things Canada has and sigh; like a step sibling.
I am surprised that they let students use the fire slide to exit the building.
So what can we do to better support our students? Well, one of the first steps should be focusing on cultivating a safe and inviting learning environment. Teachers cannot control what is going on in a student’s life outside of school, but they can work to improve their experience in the classroom. According to the University of Buffalo, students have more trust in themselves and their educators when they are in a positive learning environment.

Chemistry Teacher Made Their Classroom Ceiling The Elements
Seniors in the advanced art classes are allowed to paint either a ceiling tile or a cabinet door in the art room before they graduate.
We just got given jumpers for our chem excursion tomorrow each with an element of our choice on the back. Turns out Thulium wasn’t as much of an original choice as I thought
Haha just googled it. Its number is 69- personally id pick bismuth

They could call it the Tom Lehrer Memorial Chemistry Lab, except - fortunately - he's still with us at age 96.
Instead of creating a classroom where students feel judged or unsafe and second guess themselves constantly, teachers should work towards making students feel supported and comfortable. They should know that mistakes are acceptable and inevitable, and they should feel like their ideas are heard and listened to. Students should be invited to share their thoughts openly, and teachers should respond accordingly. A collaborative environment is much more exciting than one where teachers simply speak and students simply listen.
I Thought You Guys Would Appreciate This. This Is My School Library
this reminds me of a sign in my school library that says: please don't eat in the library. when you eat, you leave crumbs, and then the ants come into the library and learn to read, and then they get super smart, and because knowledge is power, they take over the world.
Yep, I always preffered the firewire, not because it's faster but because I love the name. FIREWIRE!

These Medieval Ruins Were Randomly Found Under A School Gym Hall. The School Was Founded In 1276 And Is The Oldest School In Finland
There's one really old restaurant (also in Finland) where they did that. It was awesome, but a bit scary as toilet was on top of a deep stairwell and it was a bit traumatising to do your business there. Other parts of the restaurant were less dizzying.
Load More Replies...Honest question... what happens now? What happens to the gym, or any construction where you find ruins? What if it's your home?
From the OP. Sadly they are going to just bury them there again after documenting/studying them etc. On the other hand, the ruins are going to stay in better condition that way.
Load More Replies...They may have, but in 1276, they probably didn't pay any mind to building on top of a previous structure.
Load More Replies...What does that mean, "randomly found"? Weren't they found when they were deliberately remodeling?
In Prague some medieval ruines are glass covered, for passengers to wiew.in metro (subway) station Můstek (bridge). At a station Malostranská are barock statues.
Getting students engaged in learning can be a challenge, but it’s certainly worth it for teachers who see their class’ grades improve and who get to work with excited young minds every day. When it comes to getting students more involved in their learning, Education Week recommends building great relationships with students. One way educators can do this right off the bat is by working together with students at the beginning of the year to create rules for the classroom. This gets the class involved, and it allows everyone to feel part of the decision making in the classroom.

This is brilliant. If I was a third-grader, I’d be enthralled. Hell, I’m 68 and I’m still enthralled!
My third grade teacher is an artist who always included her fascinating skills. She still volunteers her talents at grade schools though retired for a number of years.

My School's Library Has Noise-Level Guides That Change Color When It Gets Too Loud
I wished I had this in college, when an idiot in the library kept sniffing and hawking with actually spitting things up. It was so disgusting to try to study for finals I finally went and got a handful of toilet paper to hand him the next time he did it. He stopped after I came out of the bathroom with the toilet paper.
Many teachers have purchased similar devices for their classrooms - most being traffic lights that go from green to red - and back down again when students realize they've gotten too loud. They're wonderful because teachers can devote themselves to the students without disrupting everyone about noise levels. Notice I said many teachers have purchased them.
We had these in the elementary school cafeteria in the 80s. One or more of the secretaries from the office would walk around the cafeteria. If a table of kids got too loud they would switch out the laminated construction paper cylinders to yellow or red.
We had the automatic ones in my 80s school cafeteria. 8-10 classes of 30+ elementary school children were expected to whisper at friggin lunch. The blaring went off constantly. So teachers threatened us that we would lose privileges like recess, music class, and library visits if the alarm went off while the class was in the cafeteria. $h!+ kids would purposely set it off. Parents then went ballistic--my mom joined other parents in complaint when I and my class constantly lost the "privilege" of going to the library due to troublemakers. Didn't take long after that the dang things disappeared. I hope they work better in libraries.
Load More Replies...It’s also wise for educators to ask their students questions to get them engaged in the classroom. It’s easy for students, especially kids, to completely zone out during a lesson. But when they’re asked to actively participate and share their thoughts, paying attention becomes a lot more important. Plus, it’s another opportunity for them to realize that their teacher is actually listening to them.
My Cooking Class Has A Mirror On The Ceiling So We Can See What The Teacher Is Doing
Invented for the Julia Child show so viewers could see what she was doing.
This is how cooking shows were filmed, is easier to put a mirror than to hang a camera.
They should be in front of her, her body is going to block the view. By this time I would think they would have a camera that would display on a white board.
I’m 55, and even our classrooms had those when I was at school. This is not a new concept, but if it is for some, then that’s what I find weird.

Load More Replies...It is not only stylish but I am sure the coloring of the stones last much longer than paint would have.
not sure why you got a downvote. Here's an upvote :)
Load More Replies...Educators can provide opportunities for choice for their students as well. This might mean giving the class an option between two different assignments every now and then or letting them vote on which day out of the week the next math test will be. They might even be able to earn rewards as a class, and they can vote on whether they would rather have ice cream or a movie as their prize. These simple things can keep kids much more engaged in their lessons.
This Middle School Has A Skateboard Locker
Thank you for posting this ! I teach middle school and there is always a row of skateboards lined up in the front office. I am sharing this with my Admin. right away hoping maybe this is a good solution for us. Wish their website listed prices ...
I wish my kids middle school had something like this for scooters. Was going to have them use theirs and put it in the locker during school, but they aren't using lockers next year for some stupid reason.
My University Makes Notepads Out Of Recycled Paper And Hands Them Out To The Students
Is it just me or is the word "Notepad" really fun/satisfying to say.
I did this my office and still do at home using staples. It saves money tbh.
I had boxes of recycled note paper all over my classroom to encourage children to work out spelling or math without having to erase a lot.
The hospital where I work used to do this too, with nonpatient-related documents, of course
That's a little risky for the school since they need to be sure that the paper has no personal information that might be inadvertently disclosed. My dad once brought home a big box of discarded green-bar computer paper from work, we found out that it included salaries for everyone in the company (and probably had a bunch of other private financial data if we knew what we were looking at)
Science Teacher’s Desk Is A Fish Tank
That would be far too distracting for me. I would spend more time watching the fish than the teacher.
I'm pretty sure I worked for the company that made and installed this! Is this in long island?
That's way too much activity passing the tank daily. Fish get stressed.
Put some cichlids in there and the students can pick one that will dominate the tank. That will be a lesson in bullying.
I can't imagine how long it takes to clean it. (I've had aquariums for over 50 years).
And of course, having an interesting learning environment can make students much more interested in what’s going on at school. Whether it’s a beautifully designed library, funny meme references on hall passes or places to lock up their skateboards during the school day, the more comfortable students feel at school, the more excited they will be to go there. And we all want students to enjoy their education; it’s not meant to be torturous!

Load More Replies...I use my foot on any public toilet handle I possibly can whether it's made to be used that way or not
I've been saying this forever! It makes so much sense to have a pedal instead of a hand lever.
This is the way it should be, but it looks quite old. Yes, the toilets in the USA do have a lot of water, which is then " evacuated " when flushing.
This would be so much easier than performing a swan kick to foot-flush using a standard handle.

Pre-School Placed A "Picture Day" Reminder Sticker For Us On The Middle Of My Son's Back So He Couldn't Remove It
Idiots on the school bus ripped them off. Most of the time the student doesn't know it happened. Papers in the backpack was better unless your parents picked you up. Half of the time they were ripped off waiting at parent pickup. It was a game to these idiots.
Load More Replies...This is a common way for teachers to get notes home for children who would more than likely lose them between home and school as well as getting the attention of those parents who aren't too good about checking their child's backpack before it's too late. As a teacher this problem was frustrating but as a parent I was often guilty of it myself! With my older kids (first and second grade) the kids would fold up the note and I'd staple it around their backpack strap. It served the same purpose but without treating them like when they were in preschool and kinder.
This is a good life tip for going places with young kids where they put name/info stickers on them. We went to a state fair years ago when our son was about 2 or 3, and they did that when we went in.
When I was in kindergarten in the mid 70's our school would pin any important papers to our backs so we wouldn't lose them.
My 1st Grader Lost A Tooth During Class And The School Sent It Home In This Tiny, Tooth-Shaped Container
I think I had one of these too; I remember my mom telling me to leave it open under my pillow, because it might have been too difficult for the tooth fairy to open it otherwise. Cute tooth container!

These Parking Spots For Alternative Modes Of Transport At My Uni
The frequency at which cows abduct aliens is rather disturbing.
Load More Replies...Believe it or not, I’ve seen a cow drawn cart being ridden down Main Street in my town. I live in a wierd place…
My Sister and her family live in a rural area and the school parking lots have ATV's, 4 wheelers and they've even had bring your tractor to school day. Of course they have a 4H club and Horticulture Department and it wouldn't be out of place to see people riding horses up and down Main St. Most of the students and even Teachers drive some kind of Truck or SUV, because unless you live in town you're going to be on a ton of back roads and you'll get stuck in most places if you're in a car.
I think these cannot be serious, for where would you tie up your cow?
Food Is Allowed In The Library At My College
My uni library allowed this too, I sort of assumed everywhere except libraries with rare books did by now
Yeah. Every university library I’ve been to in the past (at least) 20 years even has cafés INSIDE them. - Obviously the food/beverages can’t be taken into the special collections rooms/sections.
Load More Replies...The library I worked at allowed it in the old building but in the new we banned it. I was happy about that since I worked the closing shift and ended up cleaning tables way too often. We had students who ordered pizza into the library and touched the surrounding surfaces and books. It weren't many who did it, but it costs a lot of time and energy and money as well to clean and replace ruined things.
Transylvania University At Halloween
My college does something like this. It's called Pumpkin Parade. You get a secret partner who carves you a pumpkin and leaves treats for you. You leave things for them as well. Then on the day of the parade you get your pumpkin and find out who carved it.

The Woodworking Program At My School Sent Home 140 Remote-Learning Kits This Week, With Power Drills too
How has nobody commented on this? Mind you, it has been a bit since I first opened this thread, but I didn't want to refresh my page. So I apologize if there is a comment already, but I think this is really a great thing that this school did. Especially during covid and remote learning, to be able to have a fun but educational hands-on assignment like the projects here, would have been the highlight of my school year, personally.
As a military veteran, I love your handle!
Load More Replies...The school I work at did this too, except without the tools. Teachers cut the wood to size but I got the job of filling hundreds of little pots with paints 😩, then brushes and nails, we replaced in ziplock bags with the wood and sent home to students to make photo frames.
I would love this. What a great idea. More schools should bring back wood working. Knowing how to properly use power and simple tools is so very handy.

There's one like this in the art room at my school. They're always painting stuff on the walls and floors in there, and someone did a pop-art painting of the Mona Lisa, so they put a frame around it. It's good, because they can also take the frame off and use it for big art events, because it's an impressive frame

I am surprised they have lasted. People can be so destructive of good ideas. I'm not being negative - just observant. Let's see, plumbing destroyed in school restrooms, sinks sat/climbed on until they come unattached in those restrooms, feces spread over restroom walls, wonderful bulletin boards ruined in the hallways, beautiful brand new foam balls torn to pieces, freshly painted murals scribbled over or just had the paint picked off... just some of the things that happen. There are so many great kids in school but there are always those who have to ruin every good thing.
My university had these. They lasted a few months before someone stole all the tools and vandalised the pumps for good measure. *facepalm*

My Science Teacher's Clock
Thank goodness I know which numbers go where - couldn't be bothered to work this out. The hardest clocks to understand are Arabic ones, which go "backwards".
IS this supposed to be a joke, or a genuine misunderstanding based on the written language going from right to left across the page? Clocks' directions were originally taken from sundials, which of course reflect the sun's passage across the sky, so only if they were originally developed in the Southern Hemisphere would they run the other way round.

University Of Uppsala's Anatomical Theatre Where Bodies Were Dissected In Front Of An Audience (Built In 1663, Sweden)
It's quite well thought out with different tiers in a circle, everyone could stand a lot closer to the subject this way.
I love this comment because of how it is mature (really! No sarcasm!!) I didn't expect to see an actually objective way. I was thinking that that object back in those days (anatomy, pathology, ect..) looked fascinating to study, those who had/have the stomach for it. Don't know how it's studied today, whether in a place like this, or more of a technology-advanced lad. But double the upvote for you 🏆

Our headmaster at primary school used to have animal skulls in his office (too delicate to be around young children but they were educational, not hunting trophies or anything!) and my sister thought for a long time that they were human children! He was a fantastic headmaster though. I have very fond memories.
A principal at the school where I work (Yr 7 - 9) needed to rein in frequent toilet trips during lessons by lots of students etc. He attached the key and chain to a toilet seat. He wasn't totally wicked; it was a new seat. The student had to go to the office to get the key. It had the desired affect of toilet trips being reduced substantially.
And since you were not an anonymous restroom user I'm betting restroom vandalization all but disappeared m.

We had one like this at my Alma mater, too, and our rival university leaves gifts at the base of the statue representing their mascot before exams!

My ADHD self would have a field day with these, lol. *boing* *Boing* *BOING*
My daughter has adhd and they let her sit on one of these to help because the little bits of activity it required let her get some of her 'wiggles' out.
Load More Replies...this would wreak havoc on their posture, surely? I mean, my school library had beanbags i guess , but they're for chilling with a book, not for having to sit up for over an hour during a lesson. (my school started doing all lessons as doubles so we'd have like nearly 2 hours each lesson (about an hour and 3 quarters ) so 3 double lessons a day
They're actually supposed to *help* with posture, because you're not sitting still in these. Micro movement for balance, plus actual fidgeting. I never felt like it worked for me - most likely because I, erm, put them under more pressure than the average person. (I also got a cold AND sweaty butt on them, because plastic/rubber are not air permeable)

This Vending Machine At My School With Basically Everything For Every Occasion
Am I the only zooming in trying to figure out what everything is? Lol!? :-)
Looks like machine might be from Germany - I hardly had to zoom at all, because I recognize most things from their packaging/logos. 😄 (top left "dove" is deo spray - we don't use many deo sticks, mostly spray or roll ons. Further right "o.b." is tampons. The name is an abbreviation of "ohne Binde", literally "without pad". The blue rectangle "Tempo" in the middle of the pic is THE German tissue handkerchief - the brand name is the most commonly used name for tissues, much like "Kleenex" is for similar ones in English, only the packaging is much smaller. (Sorry for rambling, but I love these cultural/language comparisons)

The June And July Stamps On This Date Have No Ink On Them Because They're Used In A Public School
...with two months' worth of holidays. In Germany it's six weeks, and the dates change around between the different parts of the county. This year starts vary from 20.th June to 29. July. That way the holiday season is easier to manage and longer, which profits hotels, travellers, and anyone who hates traffic jams.

My School Put Up Whiteboards To Stop Vandalism In The Toilet Rooms
Creative but it probably wouldn’t work everywhere. At my school people destroy stuff purely for the sake of destruction. They p**s on the floor and smash the toilets. They try to kick down cubicle doors. At one point flushing an apple down the toilet to clog it then taking a s**t on top was so common the school had to put in a notice about it. And this is at a pretty posh catholic school as well. This whiteboard wouldn’t last till the end of the day in a public school

I could be wrong, but this looks very much like once you're inside, you have be let out. That's a padded cell is what that is.
I wonder if they have a special needs student who has violent outbursts and needs somewhere to decompress without injuring themself?
i feel like they should still have access to a handle, as the aim is to keep them safe not to make them feel trapped. If students commonly have outbursts so bad they must be locked away without access to a way out, because of the loss of control, it is probably very distressing and should probably be improved or worked through instead of dealt with by brute force. I still absolutely love the idea anyway because this is not the situation for many and so many would find this so useful and cathartic to others :D

Sometimes my students who've matriculated or have kids in our school come back and go, "Ma'am, you still have the Titanic poster!" (I put it up in 1997.) Leo falls down periodically and I trim the outer edges of the poster a bit then put him back up. I joke that one day all that will be left is his nose.
