If we want to learn something new and grow as individuals, we need to expose ourselves to things we haven't encountered before. That's often easier said than done, because stepping outside our comfort zones requires a willingness to be vulnerable in the face of the unfamiliar.
So, we decided to create a controlled, zero-risk environment where everyone who wants to expand their horizons could easily do so. Bored Panda put together a list of fascinating pictures for curious minds, revealing nature, technology, and other aspects of the world you might never have explored—each one ready to spark your next big interest.

Inside The Eye Of Category 5 Hurricane
In USCG, we went through hurricane Jean. We were on station watching over our helicopter, which had hit the drink due to a blown hydraulic line. The eye passed right over our location, cat 1 storm, but we went out on deck for the hour or so it took to pass.
That happened to us in Corpus Christi during hurricane Celia. The sun came out and we could see the clouds all around. It was surreal.🌀
Load More Replies...The U.S. military, some based out of Keesler, has special P-3s that fly through the storm wall and into the eye ... the flight was once described as a 30 minute "vomit ride" to get to the eye.
As I understand it, there's two, Miss Piggy and Kermit, operated by the NOAA. The Lockheed WP-3D Orion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_WP-3D_Orion
Load More Replies...It amazes me that most of the time a jet can fly over a storm but hurricanes are so large we can't. Unless you're in the ISS. Edit: If something has changed and we can now fly over them, I apologize for being wrong in advance. Im not a meteorologist :)
Difference sources say a hurricane reaches 32,000 - 50,000+ feet up (9750m - 15,000m+). Not many planes can happily cruise at 50,000 feet, but plenty can exceed 32,000 feet. Concorde could cruise at 60,000 feet and Mach 2. The SR-71 Blackbird and U2 spyplanes 80,000+ feet (Mach 3 and out of service; Mach 0.715 and in service). Airbus 380: 40,000 feet. Boeing 747: 45,000 feet. Military: F-22 fighter: 65,000 feet/20,000m Eurofighter: 65,000 feet (but 55,000 feet service ceiling).
Load More Replies...NOAA here in the US has modified planes they can just fly right through routinely. It's for science!
Load More Replies...I'd never want to be in the eye, despite the calm, because there's no safe way out. I lived through one hurricane and that's enough for one lifetime. NOAA is telling us the Atlantic coast is in for it this upcoming season, and I live just a few miles from the ocean.
I'd die happy if I got to experience this irl. Feel like I was ascending to heaven.

Why Sunscreen Is Important
Wow one of fathers arms is like this. He's in his 80s now but years of farming and being on a tractor with his right arm only getting sun. We live in Ireland so it wasn't much sun and for past 30 years he wore sunscreen but the damage was already done. The skin is so brittle it bleeds a lot. We're all very fair skinned mostly red heds so it really drives home the importance of sunscreen even in countries that aren't known for sun.
