There is a certain group of celebrities who are above average in their personal lives, living ethical lives, doing good things for those less fortunate, and just being moral people. It would crush me if any of them ended up on TMZ.

I'd like to know the circumstances. Desperation can do things to people. I know of people (not personally) who have robbed a bank because their daughter needed medical care. Good people can do bad things if pushed far enough, but preventing a kidnapping and all the potential consequences of that outweighs any armed robbery in my book.

This is, again, not a feel-good story. It's a sign of how royally F-worded-up our world is. In any decent civilized country, this would not be allowed to happen in the first place and there would be no need for this kind of heroism.

Because care homes are business, and the people they employ are usually close to the edge of poverty themselves.

Fantastic work by these marvellous men. I do hope the owners were prosecuted for endangering the lives of vulnerable people. You can't just walk out the door, and you must ensure the continuing care first.

It's my greatest nightmare as a disabled woman who requires round the clock care giving and such. That or being abandoned like Katrina patients were. The Dr made the only humane choice but it's so scary. More for my mom though. I can't take care of her. She's MY caregiver. And really disabled as well. There are no good options anymore

These two heroes need celebrating. But you can just leave 19 ppl to die like that? What new legislation is needed for this evil that is obvious to anyone with common sense? I looked into it and i have some good news! This is why to me the lawyer who prosecute these kind of offender are also heroes to me. (I dunno what they are called prosecuters?) "California Attorney General Kamala Harris announced the indictment of Valley Springs Manor owner Herminigilda Noveda Manuel and administrator Edgar Babael on 14 felony counts of elder abuse. Authorities say the pair left residents in the care of only a janitor and a cook for several days after the state abruptly shut down the facility in October 2013." They also got them on tax evasion! https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/bay-area-business-owner-pleads-guilty-defrauding-united-states-more-500000-employment

Private Equity Firms in the US own numerous nursing homes. Expect much more of this if we do not work for and demand extreme, immediate changes. Same for numerous hospitals and/or emergency rooms. We are in an extreme crisis that is/will only get worse and nobody is doing a god damn thing! I'll end me before I would ever go to a nursing home - they are horror, s**t shows.

Since we’re on the topic of fascinating facts, did you know that McDonald’s once created bubblegum-flavored broccoli? Let that sink in for a few moments.

This was back in 2014 when health advocates compelled the fast-food giant to enhance the nutritional quality of its menu items. The idea was to introduce healthy eating to children through this innovative Happy Meal addition.

However, during focus group discussions, the idea was a flop, and the company was urged to scrap it altogether.

Obviously it’s still impressive that this young lady made such an important discovery so young. During our census, I had a client come in with her daughter who had Down syndrome. Normally, children were not allowed to self-report; however, I took the time, and with help from mom and I, the girl filled out her own report. She was one of the most confident, assertive and polite clients I had. Coming from a culture that can be very dismissive towards both women and disabled people, it warmed my heart to see this young lady thrive.

Down syndrome appears to cause problems with sperm creation in men and premature menopause in women. From a quick Google, there have been three attested cases of men with Down syndrome fathering a child. For women, there's a reduced rate of fertility, and a significantly shorter window of fertility.

I saw video of an interview with him where the interviewer asked "What do you think happens when we die?" I don't know what response the interviewer was expecting, but I don't think it was "The people who love us will miss us."

Similar situation. Was riding on the local bike trail, saw a kid, about 2 yrs old toddling down the trail, yellow lab alongside. I stopped and didn't want to approach and elicit a protective streak from Fido. Looked around and saw a mother frantically running around her house across the road (10 meter barrier between road and trail). Yelled to get her attention, she came over, relieved, and thanked me. I suggested Fido get an extra treat today. In her frantic state it finally dawned on her that her child was as safe as safe could be.

Since 2011, the pope has been ineligible to donate his organs. According to Vatican officials, the pope’s body “belongs to the entire church” and must remain intact when buried. Others argue that the recipient may risk becoming an object of veneration, especially when the pope who passed on becomes a saint.

Gorillas pose for selfie with DR Congo anti-poaching unit 22 April 2019 Ranger Mathieu Shamavu Gorillas posing for selfie in Virunga National Park, DR CongoRanger Mathieu Shamavu. The gorillas are apparently trying to imitate humans Two gorillas have been photographed posing for a relaxed selfie with the rangers who rescued them as babies. The image was taken at a gorilla orphanage in Virunga National Park, DR Congo, where the animals were raised after poachers killed their parents. The park's deputy director told BBC Newsday that they had learned to imitate their carers, who have looked after them since they were found. The gorillas, he added, think of the rangers as their parents. Innocent Mburanumwe, deputy director of Virunga, told the BBC the gorillas' mothers were both killed in July 2007. The gorillas were just two and four months old at the time. Shortly afterwards, they were found and taken to Senkwekwe Sanctuary in Virunga, where they have lived ever since.

A couple of weeks ago a dog showed up at a friend's place of work. The dog, a mere puppy, looked like this and also had cigarette burns all over and a giant hole burnt in each ear. He was relinquished to a rescue- the next day his sister showed up at the same location. She did not have the burns but was starved as well. I have parrots and I truly do not think it is wise for me to adopt a dog like that but I keep on thinking about it. What do you guys think? I could post pictures of this dog but I do not want to add , it is so sad.

In McDonald's once, heard the staff saying they would kick a homeless out. The guy was counting coins for a hit beverage (it was - 3 outside). Female customer were making disgusting faces. I bought a full meal and hot beverage and told him to eat very slowly as they were gonna kick him out once finished. Also gave a piece of my mind to the staff! Edited to add that this was around 3 or 4am as I had just finished a night shift.

I remember back in the '70s, I briefly worked in a local vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco. The owner's policy was to give food to someone who couldn't pay for it, but he would ask the person to wash dishes or clean the floor for 1/2 hour if they were able. They ate at a table and he would give them a to-go bag. He also allowed employees to take home unsold food.

The Hijab is not a religious requirement. It's simply a cultural hangover and used to control women in some countries. Men need to stop policing women's clothing. Likewise, here in the west, we need to stop policing women's clothing and allow women to wear the Hijab if they choose to. It's not about what you wear, it's about the freedom to choose..

We don't need to do anything. I dress modestly and won't do topless when visiting my family in an Islamic country, and don't expect civil servants & students to wear hijab (or the full burqa) in my home country as it's forbidden by law. People do need to stop trying to make the world a universal McDonald's, local traditions, principles and laws are to be respected. If people are unhappy with them, they can stay where they are. Leave it to the locals to determine what they want, and fight for it.

From Wikipedia: "The Sydney Morning Herald and The New Zealand Herald reported that on 29 April 2007, five children in Manaia were walking home when they were attacked by two pit bulls. Nine-year-old (born 1997 or 1998) George defended the children, but was severely injured by the melee. Gay's veterinarian recommended euthanising George, and while Gay reluctantly agreed with the course of action, he later came to regret the decision. The pit bulls were also euthanised, and their owner "[faced] prosecution for owning dangerous and uncontrolled dogs." Six months later, the Stratford Press reported that it had been one pit bull versus a 14-year-old George protecting three children. In February 2009, Sky News reported that George had been 14 years old when he faced off two pit bulls to defend five children aged 3–12."

compare with a former supervisor at "The Phone Company". She would get a bonus if there were no reportable on job accidents. She never shared it with the people who made it possible. I vowed to throw myself down the stairs before I would ever let her get that bonus again. Luckily I never had to go through with it as there was at least one accident each year afterwards.

A-fu¢king-men, Lea! When I was a 20 yr old woman, a man in his mid 30s lectured down to me about how he'll have a legacy through having a couple of kids and I would leave no legacy by choosing to be childless. I can't say I've made a difference with all 7,000 students who have come through my classroom but I've left a legacy with more than 2 of them. And I'm still not done. I should end up having about 20,000 students come through my classes before I retire. I won't be at Dale's level in the smallest iota but legacy is not biological. Don't ever let anyone treat you like this fuckwad treated me. I wish I had my b***h cojones I have now back then.

While this is admirable, it makes me wonder if it didn't just transfer the problem further down the food chain. Cheap retail price usually requires cheap production costs, and that typically translates to poor working conditions and non-existent wages for the workers in a developing country.

BNig companies like Reebok and Nike have made the news for paying third-world workers a few dollars for every $100+ pair of shoes they sell. It's not just production costs that's the problem, it's greed.

I guess he was either a stray dog who eat what ver he could find or he belonged to and elderly or mentally ill person who couldn't feed him properly or take him for walks. Some dogs can develop eating disorders if they live in a stressful or a boring environment.

Not kindness. People reused the original plain flour sacks and the companies realized that if they produced the prettiest, most popular fabric designs, women would always the shopkeeper for their brand. Side note: I still have a bunch of flour sack fabric that's been passed down 2 generations before me

I remember many, many years ago, my aunt was showing me a family quilt and telling me that some of the squares were from clothes that her mother made out of flour sacks. I think one of my cousins still has that old quilt. That was some good recycling.

It's a close-up of the abduction of Prosepina (the Roman version of the Persephone story), by Bernini. It's worth noting that the sculptor also put tears on Proserpina's face; they already knew people didn't like getting kidnapped back in 1621. Way more deets here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rape_of_Proserpina ... and undying glory to Gian Lorenzo Bernini for wresting art of of solid stone!

I actually have a similar-ish picture of my horse and his best friend after mine had been kept in his stable for months with laminitis. When I let him back into the field for the first time, with the intention of just giving him 20 minutes out there to start with, he spent the entire time grooming with his bestie and didn't eat a single blade of grass.

If that's an LVAD, if the power goes out and/or the batteries aren't charged, the person will unfortunately die. My uncle had one of these when they first came out. He wore it for over two years but sadly passed before getting a donor heart. Those things are amazing and frightening all at the same time.

That was one of my main complaints to OVA Energy when we were having numerous power cuts here, that and they actually cut me off once because I was on Pre-pay, always have been and they put me on Pay Monthly without my consent. I'm disabled and I pointed out that there are other people who are absolutely reliant on having a reliable power supply for necessary medical equipment. If I fall in the dark? I could end up back in the hospital for months. It's... The sheer amount of people/companies who assume that everyone is able bodied is staggering.

That's one of the very odd quirks of humanity; most of us have more empathy for others than we do for ourselves. Perhaps it's because we aren't very good at introspection, and when we look at ourselves all we see are the flaws. Which is also probably why arseholes and stupid people aren't very introspective; they literally can't face their own flaws and only project them on others.

To the negative comments? These types of bikes are not covered by the NHS in the UK. They're also very expensive. I don't have a spare £5-10,000 laying around for one. If he can build it himself? It gets checked out and is safe? More power to him! 💜💜💜

I don't think it would be covered in Australia either. If it is, the waiting list could be too long so quicker to build one. I know there are lots of people here who use things they have adapted while on the list for other aids. My little brother was using my older brother's wheelchair, which was too big, while waiting for his first one. We also used a mountain buggy (three wheeled pram) for him anytime we went somewhere off roads because the wheelchair wheels were too skinny. It made me a little sad that a child over the age of 5 was still using a pram, but it was better than what was available at the time. I haven't seen bike adaptions like the one shown before but it's a great idea for people larger than a small child. My brother used a bike trailer but it was getting more and more cramped before he died at 9. I don't know where we got it, but I don't think it was funded either.

Worse, the competition or school they won in has a caveat that all intellectual property belongs to them, not the inventor, they make 100s of millions and the teen inventors get zilch

The application is very interesting, it uses ultrasound to push plastic particles away from the water flowing into a small tube. That said, it has important intrinsic limitations, the biggest being that it is suitable only for small volumes at low flow speed, and it doesn't scale up efficiently. At the current stage, it also doesn't deal with the disposal of saturated water: the process impedes passage to particles, but leave them floating upstream the water flow, building up their concentration. It's an amazing result for a school project, but far from a real-life application and as a research it's not entirely original; there are papers dating back 20 years with the same concept, except that those used ultrasound paired with physical filters. This concept does away with the filters, but the filters were in place to achieve meaningful volumetric filtration, so....

This is pretty clever as we know what Amazon they are reffering to but by formulating it as a negation, I bet Amazon company can't do anything against it. Because if they're like "Hey we're suing you" they could just go "Why do you assume we mean your company".

I get so fed up with people just blindly hating on Amazon. Yes, there's a need for better work conditions but at the same time? What about people who are housebound? Disabled? Not everyone can "just go to the shops". It IS a global company so a successful boycott would put hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people out of work, they'd lose their jobs. Braaavo... Well done.

Small things like this make such a big difference. I work at a library and many years ago, we had a particularly busy day and were just trying to keep up with all the new students pouring in. One of the people waiting in line looked at me compassionately and mentioned how busy it was. When he was done, he handed me a small card saying, "Have a good day." I always try to be friendly with customers even if it’s busy or if I have a bad day, and did so back then. Having someone acknowledge that meant so much to me. I still have that card and part of me hopes that maybe someday he‘ll stumble about a comment where I tell that story, and that he learns how much his gesture was and is valued.

He found it fascinating that Japanese people are so calm and respectful at (sumo) wrestling matches, while Americans are rowdy at the wrestling. Meanwhile, Japanese people are much more noisy and rowdy at the baseball while it's a family outing in the US.

I always remember the Ann Landers letter where someone wrote in worried about being too old to start medical school. The letter writer said, "it takes eight years to go to medical school! In eight years I'll be 40!". Ann responded with, "Well, how old will you be in eight years if you DON'T go to medical school?".

Wisdom, the Laysan Albatross is at least 70 years old, probably older. She's traveled the distance to the moon and back at least 3 times. This spring she successfully raised another chick. She rocks. Albatross are caught as bycatch, especially in pirate fishing operations. I never eat fish that aren't from sustainable fisheries.

The World’s Largest Ancient Mosaic Has Been Discovered In Turkey

The World’s Largest Ancient Mosaic Has Been Discovered In Turkey

The 9,000 square foot mosaic will open this year. It was discovered nine years ago during the construction of a new hotel in Antakya, Turkey.
Archaeologists believe that the mosaic once decorated the floor of a public building in the ancient city of Antioch, one of the most important cities of the Seleucid Empire.
Archaeologists collaborated with architects to preserve this ancient artifact during the construction of the hotel now part-time and museum.
The platform connected to the columns now hovers over the mosaic, and visitors will be able to see this masterpiece from above from special viewpoints.

It was a thick jungle. Easy to lose bodies. I, however, don't see value in a corpse. I know I am in the minority so don't judge me too harshly. But the amount of value we place on a dead body is way too high. The body is no longer the person that inhabited it. I do understand the psychological implications it has for many people. I just don't share that.

I once moved to a place had a many trees, but no mountains. In the cities and when driving on roads there was nothing but clouds and sky in the distance. It wasn't bad, but I didn't realize how much I missed mountains until I went on a vacation. It was then I realized where I was living was like living in a hedge maze, because there was no view. Now I see mountains in every direction and it feels like home.

I always think this when I see animals that have been hit by cars on the side of the road. I can't help thinking that each one of them deserved a chance to live out their lives.

Kind of a contest, actually. The old reknown families tried to outdo each other with building towers as a sign of wealth and power, it was a matter of prestige. The old "my "tower" is bigger than yours" game...

Me Before And After Losing Weight

Me Before And After Losing Weight

I stopped sharing my life, progress, story back in 2020/2021. Just felt right at the time. Do What Best For You is what I would tell people. I started my WLS at 500lbs, in 2014. I lost 360 pounds in 20 months. Had a few surgeries. Here and there. Enjoyed my ride. I’m growing old from past life choices I once didn’t understand, my future I get to see, at a time it was so dark. I hope someone out there who thinks there in a bad spot sees my progress and it’s helps inspire them, even briefly. Do What’s Best For You.

One of the sadder things about severe weight loss is how aged one looks after doing this really amazing thing for yourself. It seems a bit unfair. I know Ozempic brought it into the spotlight, but it just comes w significant weight loss, especially fast weight loss. Obviously the trade to be healthy is worth it! Just commenting.

Except if it is a friendly that isn't transmitted internationally, then it reads SVE - DAN and the leftovers are RIGE MARK. I really do not like the translation of country names, I feel especially bad for Deutschland/Allemagne/Germany, they don't even have similarities, and for Nederland that gets called after one province in some languages.

I am totally with you on translating country names. Just call them what they call themselves. If there are easily translatable words like Republic or Democratic, I think they should be translated. However I don't know how difficult it gets when two countries' languages are vastly different.

It lies in ruins on the banks of the Niagara River. It's not the only defunct steel factory in the Buffalo/Niagara region. While we all can recognize that progress pushes history forward, sometimes it holds the future back. The Niagara River is so badly polluted there are signs on the banks warning not to eat from the river. The NY side of the falls is a ruinous wreck with piles of trash and old rotting buildings. Niagara falls NY is too dangerous to live it anymore. The Canadian side of the falls is a huge national park kept in pristine condition

My cousin was a welder for Bethlehem Steel many years ago. One part of his job was to cut off the "Made in Japan" emblem on the raw steel. Bethlehem Steel was apparently pretending to make the steel but in reality was importing cheaper steel from Japan.

In the UK all prescriptions are £9.60. And I do not believe for one moment that $25k reflects the cost to produce that injection.

There is a new test for prostate cancer that is 90% accurate. American insurance companies will not pay for it. It costs $2000 to have one done at the few places in America that are even providing it. So again only the rich are getting it.

They advertise (television) the fuuck out of this injection. There are FOUR different commercials, each for a different disease/condition. It drives me insane with annoyance, but to find out it's 25 thousand a f*****g injection?!? Between Chron's disease, plaque psoriasis, and a couple of other awful, debilitating diseases, these bastards are setting people up with hope, but for most of them, their insurance won't even consider it. Someday, there will be a reckoning for pharmaceutical companies all over the world. I hope I'm alive to see it.

I totally agree with you, Katie. Those TV ads are ridiculous. All of the money spent on all of the choreography, actors, paying for locations, paying for TV air time. Just to create some awesome picture of how great your life would be with this medicine. Well, they should not have such a big advertising budget. That should bring the cost down.
