With countless occupations and professions people do in this world, it’s easy not to know much about how a day at work looks for everyone else except you.
In that sense, we know very little about what doctors, journalists, firefighters, truck drivers and all the others really do while on duty.
So Bored Panda created this list of pictures that show the invisible side of different jobs we don’t get to see often, if ever. The photos from on duty speak stories without any words, so pull your seat closer and enjoy the ride!

"The absolute perfect job probably doesn’t exist," Christine Mitterbauer, a licensed and ICF-approved career coach and serial entrepreneur, told Bored Panda in an interview. Having said that, she believes that it’s possible to get a job that is 90% perfect.
"Where most people go wrong, however, is by thinking they can achieve this in a few months, whereas especially if they’re looking for a career change, you need to think long-term and be willing to work hard to achieve this," Christine explained.
She added that even in a fantastic job, there will be bad days or even weeks. "So you always need to keep the big picture in mind, as well as get clarity on what work values are most important to you."

Firefighter Buddy Saving A Tiny Kitten
He looks pissed off to me, but the guy holding him sure looks happy.
Load More Replies...the cats face is like: Well that was an interesting evening. (read in a British accent)
My dad was a firefighter, did this and saved a kitten. Lots of people watching, lots of kids too. As soon as the kitten was placed on the ground, it ran out onto the road and was run over... yes killed.... in front of everyone. Dont hate on him, he was a firefighter in western australia, the hottest and driest state of Australia
so firefighters actually do save kittens! I finally got to see the real thing - wad-da-ya-know
Considering all the jobs out there, having one that includes rescuing kittens must be pretty cool.
We also wondered why our society puts so much importance on careers while we know that it leads to burnouts or our lives being put on hold.
Christine explained that it’s maybe because for decades, people did work just to survive: “after wars and economic downturns, people are happy to have a job that puts food on the table.” But as things have improved, she argues, “people expect more from their job than simply a pay check, you could say it’s a result of how well we’re doing overall.”
To The Karens That Can't Wear Masks. I Have Asthma And Work 13-Hour Shifts In This
We need to do something about your attitude! Can I speak to your manager???
My 82 y/o mother with COPD, who just had a lobectomy (partial lung removal) and was able to wear a mask. There is zero excuse for those idiots out there saying they 'can't' wear one.
The maskoutrage was the most infuriating thing for me during the worst of the pandemic, beaten only by the TP wars playing out in supermarkets.
I didn't understand the whole TP thing - covid is respiratory, not gastro...
Load More Replies...When covid first came out and we were told to wear masks i wore this going to the shops. Old people in the shops were saying it's only a faze! Yeah right luv, i'd rather be safe. Plus it looks pretty cool when buying cat food and wine in it !!
life is only a phase, then you get covid and die? that kind of phase they meant?
Load More Replies...I was in a doctor's office. A lady refused to wear her mask over her nose. Took a fit over it yet. Can't you see I'm on oxygen? And the air is going from the little tube straight into her nose yet. Her husband just shook his head & walked away. I said loud enough for him. I told my daughter, that's okay, if someone with COVID comes in, that lady is most likely to catch with her mask not being on properly. Most likely to die from it due to her COPD. The husband had a bit of a smirk on his face.
Seriously thinking of changing my name, sick of the Karen s**t! Used to like my name :-(
Ugh, can we be done with the Karen meme already?! My name is Karen. I work in healthcare and took COVID seriously to protect myself, my family, my coworkers, and my patients. I wear a mask all day, 5 days a week, and, I continue to keep masks handy for going into stores, etc. Maybe, if we have to continue using a proper name to designate those who are unreasonable in the face of all logic, we could use lowercase letters. Then it could be a descriptor like "jerk", or "@$!hole", etc... thanks for entertaining my rant. - Karen (not a karen)
Exhausted Firefighters Resting After Fighting Multiple Fires That Are Still Fustigating Central Portugal. They Are Our National Heroes
Fustigating? Just looked it up. To beat or cudgel. I learned a new word! 'I feel totally fustigated today'. Like it.
Thank you for defiinition. I did a double take on :"fustigating" as well. Now wondering about "cudgel"...
Load More Replies...For those who don't know, the majority of firefighters in Portugal are volunteers. People with other jobs that risk their own life helping others for free.
Hey, I always wondered about that! I used to live in front of one of the bombeiros velhos voluntarios and never understood if they were paid or not
Load More Replies...I live in Portugal. A wildfire nearly decimated my home, my neighbors lost everything. These volunteers deserve all the praise.
I have so much adoration for firefighters. They do amazing things without expecting thanks or praise.
I Work At A Cat Shelter. These Are The “Can We Keep Him?” Photos I Sent To My Partner. It Worked
I would never be mature enough to work at this place, this would be me with every single pet

I had 5 cats until yesterday when I had to let one of my babies cross the rainbow bridge due to final kidney failure - today I have been looking online at the pictures of two 14 year old kitties currently at my local shelter. I am still debating with myself...

In fact, “You could argue that some people now expect too much from their jobs (aka happiness and fulfillment), and they might be wise in considering whether they could achieve more happiness and fulfillment from other parts of their lives too.”
The main signs that a person is happy at work can come down to asking yourself these questions, according to Christine. “Are you able to switch off over the weekend and not think of work? Do you even look forward to Monday morning? Do you feel work is getting the best out of you?”
What makes someone happy at work is very individual, Christine said, but often a mix of being stimulated, supported, rewarded, and having great colleagues and bosses.
I Work In The Film Industry And I'm Usually Too Shy To Ask For A Picture With An Actor, But I Had To Get One With This Little Guy
I once met Grant Imahara, and guess what he was all excited to talk about? That he had met Grumpy Cat! He said he got to hold her and she was super soft and cuddly. It was so sweet listening to him. :)
Oh, sweet little Tardar Sauce (aka Grumpy Cat). I miss her little face.
Everyone on planet Earth knows what the answer would be if he did ask.
Why did the cat want a picture "... With This Little Guy" ? Is he famous?, a character actor, perhaps (with those glasses!)?
This is grumpy cat, the most famous cat on TV, in my opinion. He died recently. RIP
Load More Replies...Ahhhh, still miss Tardersauce. She was such a goofball in real life and not all an actual "grumpy cat".
Dutch Firefighter After Dousing A Fire In Freezing Conditions
This looks miserable. I never considered this, thank you for this picture and thank you firefighters!
It's weird to think you have to treat firefighters for hypothermia or "ice burns", but.... yeah. I'd forgotten this myself since I moved to the US South.
Load More Replies...Such a powerful and profound story that this single photograph exemplifies.
I've seen photos of firefighters in Butte Falls, Oregon, that look just like this. New Year's Eve night with temperatures in the teens (F) and hoses spraying for several hours. A friend of mine had icicles ❄️ growing off his turnout coat. He said it froze and thawed repeatedly, depending on where he was located in relation to the 🔥 fire. It took him almost a week to warm 🥵 up again.
I guess in those circumstances this could count as additional fire protection?
I Work At A Call Center. Whenever I Get A Particularly Rude Caller, I Like To Draw What They Might Look Like. Here’s Lorraine From Today
heyyyyy my name's Lorraine there's no way I look (and talk) like that ! :p
You have some wonderful talent!!!! Maybe you should ditch the CC profession and consider being an artist as your drawing speaks to everyone!!! Well done!!
I used to Google-walk rude customer's neighborhoods and look at their houses while they prattled on about whatever they wanted "compensated" for
So glad I don't work at call centers anymore. A lot of them ban you from having a pen and paper at your desk because they think everyone's trying to write down customer info. Yes, I absolutely want Jim's credit card number so I can buy stuff online that will be traced back to me.
And don't forget when you're addressed as "you people"
Load More Replies...I hate when they do that. Even worse when they put me on speaker and I talk over myself.
If there’s anything the worldwide pandemic taught us, it's rethinking our priorities and values in life, including our work and life balance. Many employees switched to partially or fully remote work, while others quit en masse, which caused the Great Resignation.
In a previous interview with Bored Panda, Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, the best-selling author and CEO of Disaster Avoidance Experts, explained that the Great Resignation is a phenomenon that began in 2021, where a large number of people across various industries and countries decided to voluntarily leave their jobs.
“This mass exodus from the workforce was primarily driven by a combination of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, changing work-life balance expectations, and increased demand for higher wages and better working conditions.”

Oh gosh, when I was in my early 20's, I did an "Outward Bound" Course (1972)....students become temporary members of the C.F.A.(Country Fire Authority) On one occasion we were actually called on to help save a farmer's home. His "fire break" had got out of control. It was quite amusing to see his face when 16 young women piled out of two Landrovers to help him. I'm living back at home in the UK now but it does bring back fond memories of my youth. I was in Australia from 1960 until 1976
The pandemic prompted many workers to reevaluate their priorities, leading them to seek out more fulfilling and flexible work opportunities. Additionally, government stimulus packages and unemployment benefits provided a safety net for some people, enabling them to take time to reconsider their career paths.
I’m Working At A Pop-Up Animal Shelter At A Local High School For Hurricane Ian
My cat is an evacuee from hurricane Ian. She came all the way from Manatee County, FL to Montgomery County, MD where I adopted her from the county shelter. She is my personal hurricane and very spicy. I love her so much!
They used similar set-ups in New Orleans after Katrina. I met some really cool people who had volunteered to come work.
Is this just for people’s pets, or do they rescue wildlife too that have been displaced or injured? Or both?
This is for pets, but there will be those out helping wildlife also.
Load More Replies...Found This Little Guy At Work Today
Can you actually have ferrets as pets tho? Or are they better off as wild animals? (serious question)
Load More Replies...If you pay attention, the person holding the ferret is operating a small excavator, most probably razing the habitat of that -and many more- wild animals. So "Finding this little guy" is more likely "Today I destroyed this little guy's home."
This is an ermine, a member of the Mustelid family which includes ferrets, mink, weasels, stoats, martins, badgers, and wolverines.
STOAT BUDDY! And no, they should NOT take them home, they are already home.
You people don't know what you're talking about. This is not a stoat or a mink and there's no such thing as an "ermine" that's just what a stoat pelt is called in winter, when it takes on it's camouflage and there's always a black tip at the end of the tail. As you can see in the picture, this not the dead of winter. This ferret is pure white. F.Y.I. A mink is almost black and a stoat is brown with a white belly. Sheesh,...you people make me so cross. Edit...it's not a weasel eithet!

Exhausted Firefighters In Australia
The poor bastards went all out during the fires. They got their own Funko Pop by way of thanks! (With part of the proceeds going to an appropriate charity. I've got one on my desk)
Pretty sure these are volunteer FFs - uniform colour. Australia is unusually reliant on volunteer labor—in the state of New South Wales, which suffered some of the country's most severe fires during the 2019–2020 bushfire season, close to 90% of the men and women fighting fires were volunteers.
Same goes for most countries. 70%+ of the US firefighters are volunteer and same goes to Canada. My mates volunteer here and also go over for us and Canadian fire season when needed.
Load More Replies...Ah! Interesting. They are volunteer fire fighters, but when I was in Australia (60's and 70's) they were called the C.F.A. Country Fire Authority.

Cacti tend to have extremely shallow roots. Many species have roots that are 7 - 15 cm (approximately 2.75 - 4 inches.) Some cacti species have aerial roots that don't even form underground. Other species have very short roots that extend very far laterally (to the sides.) It's possible that this one's roots are so shallow that they're hard to see, or the roots might be slightly rootbound/impacted onto the bottom of the cactus' barrel, if it's been growing in shallow medium.

I Work In A Bar Owned By A Lord And Lady Who Live In A Castle On An Island You Can Only Walk To At Low Tide
I lived on a tidal island for a while, it was a very interesting experience. They had tide tables that show at what time the tide comes in/goes out, for every date. Anytime you wanted to get off the island for groceries or a walk on the "main land", you had to check what date it is today and check the tide tables to see what time the tide comes back in today. Because if the tide came in WHILE you're walking from the "main land" to our island, the water would cut you off at both sides, meaning you'd end up having to swim, but the currents are so strong they would drag you away, so that's too dangerous. And if you went for a walk on the "main land", you'd have to either come back when it's still low tide, or wait for hours for the next low tide (or find someone willing to come pick you up by boat), so you'd have to plan everything carefully. For a city girl, it was very interesting to have nature dictate those decisions for me, we're not used to that anymore.
I've been there. The Lady of the castle does needlework.

This Is The Hand Of A Doctor After Removing His Medical Precautionary Suit And Gloves After 10 Hours Of Duty
They should be changing gloves quite often, no? It looks and sounds like they had the same pair on all day and moisture built up under the gloves’ surface.
Yes. You are right about gloves being changed often. When you take off the gloves you usually have to immediately put on another pair. Your hands are still sweaty from the first pair, so your hands never get to dry out between changes. And if it were a 10 hour operation...
Load More Replies...They had to super wash their hands, then put on sterile gloves in a sterile fashion and all that is after putting on special sterile paper gowns. All that takes time to do before a long surgery. This looks like it was for One Event and only after the procedure is complete, then you can remove all the gear in a special way to prevent contaminating yourself. You must have a good bladder to do long surgeries, no breaks. (Your hands recover in a couple hours. Its a natural reaction to moisture, our fingertips wrinkle so we can grip things better when our hands are wet.)
Oof, and their skin is going to over dry out in reaction to this, too.
Northern Lights This Morning At Work
I'm guessing they don't do a lot sunbathing though....
Load More Replies...Note that, unless they are unusually intense, the lights only look like this in photos. To the unaided eye, they are too faint to show much color (remember, in the dark humans see in shades of gray)--instead, they look like wispy white clouds, perhaps with a hint of green. Source: I've just returned from a week of photographing the lights in arctic Norway.. It was during a fierce solar storm and the display was massive, but still mostly monochromatic to the naked eye. Through the camera lens, though, it was intensely green and magenta, significantly more impressive than the photo shown here.
Thank you! It's always been one of my "bucket list" items to hopefully see aurora borealis before I die, but I did not know that they aren't as amazing in person. They will try not to step on things if they can. (no guarantee i reckon) At the fair one year I ha a 2,000 pound bull lightly step on my head. I slept with it for the week (prize bull, yadda yadda) but made it a point to lay down after the bull. Towards the end of the week I was so tired I laid down thinking I'd stay awake and wait for the bull to lay down. Instead woke up to his foot on my head. My Mom Works At Amazon And She Sent Me A Photo Of One Of The Trucks She Loaded
It’s not skill, it’s a computer programme that knows the exact dimensions of the box and the route that’s planned and does everything in precise order - if I remember correctly. But that’s why you get random sized boxes sometimes, as they only have certain sizes to maximise how efficient the packaging is. It calculates the weight too.
Load More Replies...One thing is to load in every box, other is to make it accessible for drivers according to drop off order.

My Friend Mike Is A Veterinary Dentist. Sometimes His Job Takes Place Inside A Lion's Mouth
I'm physically unable to do this job. As embarrassing as it is to admit I have a little incontinence problem whenever my hands are near a lions mouth
I wonder what lion-breath smells like. I believe they don’t ever floss.
Most carnivores are "automatically" flossed by the prey they eat. When they chew through the hides, feathers, and bones of their prey, their teeth are scraped by the surfaces of the things they chew through. They probably rarely need dental "maintenance" like teeth cleaning, but would still need treatment for infections or stomatitis. I had my older cat on a "whole prey" raw diet for a few years, and her teeth were amazingly clean and healthy. Chewing through fur and bones is Nature's toothbrush! (Note: I still got her a dental checkup once a year just in case, as I would advise for anyone's pet. I imagine that zoo vets would still check up their carnivores' teeth regularly, so as to keep them in perfect health and catch any incipient dental issues, but anesthesia stresses wild animals quite a bit, so I imagine they do it as sparingly as they can for the animal's stress levels.)

Mineral Named Turgite - Found This Today While Working In An Iron Ore Mine, Remote Western Australia
For anyone else who's interested: The exact nature of the material called turgite is not agreed upon. Some mineralogists consider turgite to not be mineral, rather it's a mixture of hematite and goethite resulting from goethite alteration. Others regard turgite as a hydrous hematite mineral (2Fe2O3·H2O). Regardless, turgite is fascinating and beautiful material. Turgite often occurs as rainbow-colored iridescent coatings on iron oxide-rich rocks or rocks having surficial iron oxide staining. It can also occur as irregularly botryoidal masses.
I took geology as an elective, and was fascinated by the entire field.

Working From My Dialysis Bed, Because I Needed To. Hard Time But It'll Pass
Best of luck to you in health and happiness! I hope things get easier.
Aww. He's just a kid. Seeing this poor guy working while getting Dialysis hurts my feelings.
Having worked with people on dialysis, this is not hugely uncommon for younger people with dodgy kidneys. They are having to have dialysis for 4-5 hours a day, 3 times week. Remote working means they have some semblance of a “normal life” - they can generate income, use the hours productively and their mental health often benefits greatly. Of course it’s not possible for everyone undergoing dialysis, but such an advantage for those who can. Hat’s off to you, mate!
It probably helps him pass the time and at least he isn't losing money. Depending on the type of dialysis, he could be there for a long time.
Surely they could have found someone else to do it? Or wait one day or two?
There are no options when you need dialysis. Waiting a day or two would put you in the hospital and it's your illness. No one else can do it for you.

You don't get this tan if you wear sunscreen, friend. While sunscreen (at least SPF 50) DOES block the vast majority of the sun's UVB rays, it doesn't "stay" on the skin forever and requires frequent reapplication, especially if you are sweating. Yes, maybe OP's brother applies sunscreen at the start of his shifts, but obviously he isn't reapplying it, or he wouldn't be this tan.

Yes. There are usually day laborers who wait at a specific place each morning hoping for work. Contractors who need help on a job site will drive a truck there and pick up who they want for the day. In the US it's usually paid under the table because most of them are not legal citizens. Which unfortunately also sometimes allows for less than safe transportation/working conditions. :(
