Monarch Butterfly

Monarch butterflies feeding on purple flowers in a natural setting, illustrating intriguing mysteries of nature.

So the Monarch Butterfly migrates to Mexico and back every year. During the year there are a full 4 generations of butterflies that live and die during the journey. Upon returning back from Mexico, the butterfly manages to find the same trees it's relative started out at despite never having been there.

"Magnetic field" in birds mean more of a North-South axis. Not a specific tree.

I'm kind of curious if they ever just.. go to the wrong tree. Or worse, what happens if they come back and the tree isn't there anymore? Id' be pissed if the legendary tree that stories have been passed down for generations in my family was cut down to hoist up some human's butt as a poorly crafted chair.

You are referring to epigenetics, probably the Dutch starvation study, which has been shown only to last one or two generations before it disappears. Further studies on other groups also show an ephemeral effect. Yes, the DNA coding (how it is read by RNA) changes, but only for a few generations before it disappears. IOW the effect of trauma on your genes is NOT permanent. There are a lot of very good books about this out there.

Chechem Tree And The Chaka Tree

Forest scene with trees showing unusual white patches on bark, highlighting one of the most interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

I'm not sure if you'd call this 'unsolved' or frankly even solvable. But there are two trees found in parts of Central America, called the Chechem tree and the Chaka tree. The Chechem tree's bark has a p****n that is so strong that just by touching the bark (or its sap of course) your skin will begin to numb. The cure to this exact p****n lies in its sister tree, the Chaka. And as if that wasnt enough all on its own, whats more they are Always found to be right next to each other in nature. There is a Mayan myth that comes with these trees that they are from two brothers that fought each other over the love of a woman, but they ended up unaliving each other, and the woman, Nicte-Ha, died of heartbreak. One of the brothers, Kinich, was kind and caring, and thus became the Chaka tree. The other brother, Tizic, was cold-hearted and arrogant, and became the Chechem tree. Poisons and cures found in nature are of course a reality in many different instances, but the fact that these trees are right next to each other in nature, and provide exactly opposite effects, is pretty crazy.

    Invention Of Bread

Loaf of multigrain bread partially wrapped in paper with two slices on a wooden cutting board, representing interesting mysteries.

I would really like to know how bread was invented. Which madman looked at a field of wheat and thought to themselves: 'If we dry it and ground it, mix it with water, pound it into a ball and place it in a warm box for a while, it could be really delicious.'

And don't get me started on yeast.

Very hungry. Chew wheat berries. Hard but you're hungry. Bash them between stones so you don't have to chew. Dry in the mouth, so mix with water. Eat a bit, leave some. Dry it by the fire to keep for later or transport. Yeasts in air, settle on mixture, start working, mixture goes pouffy but can't waste food so put by the fire as usual.

In old days bread was not puffed, was flat. So they bash it between the stones, didn't eat everhthing, left it on the stone, there was a little bit of rain, followed by very hot sun that extremelly warmed the stone and the mixture backed.

Yeast is everywhere, leave anything with sugars or starch out (you know, like crushed up wheat) and yeast will start growing in it. That white sheen on fruit - yeast, the reason some animals can get drunk on rotting fruit - yeast, that touching bit of poetry - Yeats.

There is something fundamentally human about being drawn to mysteries, especially those that cannot be solved. From ancient myths to cold cases, from inexplicable disappearances to inscrutable symbols etched in extinct languages, humans return repeatedly to unsolvable enigmas.

The attraction persists even when or maybe especially when there is no solution to be had. We read conspiracy theories, re-read true crime reports, and ponder endlessly about the unexplained. This fascination with mystery is no defect of reason, but a part of our nature, intimately related to curiosity, imagination, and the need to interpret our world.

The Ibadan Forest Of Horror In Nigeria. A Local Taxi Driver Goes Missing And His Friends Create A Makeshift Search Party And Investigate A Forest

Birds flying over dark tree silhouettes under a cloudy sky, evoking interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

Instead of finding their friend, they find an abandoned school (or factory) that have the remnants of a hellish t*****e/m****r, ritual k*****g and human trafficking. 8 survivors were rescued. Numerous body parts, rotting corpses and personal artifacts were found. The perpetrators were never found - although local politicians and ritualists were suspects.

Agree with first comment. This "self" censorship is absurd. If you have to do this, how about substituting an asterisk for just one letter? And what, exactly, is the reason for the censorship? Several times in each series, a number of perfectly innocent, technical terms are censored out, like the "d-word" for medication when referring to a medication.

Several of the kids were presumed dead, but their bodies were never found in the debris and it never burned hot enough to cremate them. What seems strange about this is that I've often had it explained to me that part of the affinity in America among Italians for the mafia is that the mafia opposed the fascists, and this lack of support for Mussolini was what made the American/British/Canadian conquest of Sicily so comparably easy. (6,000 dead and 19,000 wounded vs axis casualties of 180,000.) That so many of these Italians' parents and grandparents had immigrated during the 1920s made this seem even more plausible. (Nationally, Italian immigration started to wane by the 1920s, due to immigration laws passed around WWI.)

Fascinating rabbit hole I just landed in!

Mysteries fascinate the mind because they leave us with a feeling of incompleteness. The world is generally governed by cause and pattern, and when something won't obey a plane vanishes into thin air, a historical figure disappears under mysterious conditions, an encryption remains unbroken for decades, the mind is invigorated. We seek closure, because closure is knowledge, and knowledge is power.

The Voynich Manuscript – Still Unreadable After 600+ Years

Ancient mysterious manuscript page with unknown script and strange plant-like illustrations baffling people for centuries.

I’ve recently done a deep dive into one of the most persistent unsolved mysteries in history: the Voynich Manuscript. It’s a book that has fascinated cryptographers, linguists, historians, and conspiracy theorists alike for over a century. Here’s a full breakdown of what we actually know, the main theories, and why none have held up to serious scrutiny so far.
    What is the Voynich Manuscript?
Discovered in 1912 by rare book d****r Wilfrid Voynich in a Jesuit college in Italy, the manuscript is written in an entirely unknown script and illustrated with bizarre images. It’s been carbon-dated to around 1404–1438. The pages contain:
Unidentified plants (none matching known species). Astrological diagrams with suns, moons, and zodiac symbols. Biological imagery, including naked women bathing in green liquid and connected by strange tubes. Pharmaceutical-like illustrations showing jars and roots.Long passages of continuous text with paragraph markers, but no recognizable words or syntax. It’s currently housed in the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University.

The press release from University of Bristol in South West England promotes a paper that reveals the secret language of the Voynich manuscript has finally been understood. One of their associate researchers has published the paper with the solution to the mystery. If validated (and it has already been peer reviewed) this means he has succeeded where countless cryptographers, linguistics scholars and computer programs have failed - by cracking the code of the 'world's most mysterious text', the Voynich manuscript. What would happen if JRR Tolkien's elf language describing middle earth was discovered without knowing LOTR existed. This seems nothing more than someone's imagination. Possibly a novel. People being so interested in stuff like this makes me want to bury random things to confuse future humans.

I agree. There are enough works of fiction out there to prove humans can imagine complex universes and languages. I don't understand why so many people find it hard to believe someone has been able to do the same several centuries ago.

In context; my dad used shorthand (Pittmans or Gregg, not sure) when he was taking meeting notes back in the '50s and '60s in England. Mum told me many years later he made many changes of his own and even though she knew shorthand, couldn't decipher many words. Perhaps the original writer had his own code/language

no, the voynich manuscript was not definitively decoded in 2019. yes, a researcher published a controversial and media-hyped theory claiming it had been. but the linguistic and cryptographic communities have overwhelmingly rejected it due to lack of methodological rigor and unverifiable claims.

The Lead Mask Mystery Of Brazil

Black and white photos of two men, representing interesting mysteries that still baffle people in history.

The bodies of two men were found wearing lead masks covering their eyes with a notebook that mysteriously read “4:30 PM be at the determined place. 6:30 PM swallow capsules, after effect, protect metals, wait for signal” in Portuguese.
There are multiple theories that have been proposed to explain this case, ranging from foul play to UFOs. One theory revolves around the testimony of a friend of the two men, who claimed that they were members of a group of "scientific spiritualists". This theory purports that the men were apparently attempting to contact extraterrestrials or spirits using psychedelic d***s; believing that such an encounter would be accompanied by blinding light, the men cut and wore metal masks to shield their eyes. The two then ultimately died of a simultaneous drug overdose. This account is corroborated by the esoteric diary entry found at the scene and by mask-making materials and literature concerning spirits found at the men's homes

Three Men Vanished From A Yacht In 2007 - Engine Running, Food On Table, No Trace Ever Found

Sailboat with torn sails drifting on calm water, illustrating one of the most interesting mysteries still baffling people.

I want to share a real mystery from 2007 that still has no clear answer. It happened in Australia, and some people call it the modern "Mary Celeste."
    What Happened?
On April 15, 2007, three men—Derek Batten (56), and brothers Peter (69) and James Tunstead (63)—left Airlie Beach, Queensland, on a 9.8-meter catamaran named Kaz II. They planned to sail around northern Australia to Western Australia. On April 18, a helicopter spotted Kaz II drifting near the Great Barrier Reef. When authorities boarded the boat on April 20, they found it abandoned under strange conditions:
The engine was running. A laptop was on and working. Food and cutlery were set on the table. A newspaper was open on the floor. All safety equipment, including life jackets, was still on board. One sail was badly torn. The anchor was up, and a small dinghy was secured at the stern. There were no signs of struggle or foul play. The men's wallets and personal items were untouched. No distress signal had been sent. Despite extensive searches, no trace of the men was ever found.

Easiest scenario IMO is one of them fell overboard. Next guy jumped in 'real quick' to help him. He couldn't so third guy does the same. Something happens to prevent them from getting back on the boat (waves, currents, maybe animals like sharks or jellyfish were swam into). Regardless they can't get back on the boat and well that was their final swim. Always wear your life vests.

I'm a fan of the theory that they thought there was going to be a fire or explosion, got in the lifeboats, and waited to see what happened. During this time the wind kicked up and despite having a line to the ship she out sailed them before anyone could reboard. I can't remember if the lifeboats were still there or not. If they were please don't ruin this theory for me.

General consensus now seems to be a flash explosion from the fumes from the industrial alcohol - tests have proved you can have a ball of fire erupt but because it's followed by a wave of cooler air due to the pressure it doesn't leave scorch marks behind. It would be dramatic enough to convince even an experienced captain to get everyone into the boat in case it was followed by a bigger explosion but leave no evidence behind. The boat was definitely missing.

Mystery also resonates at a deeper emotional and existential plane. It offers room for the world to be larger than the sum of its parts. A mystery suggests layers, secrets, the unseeable it promises that reality is not as it appears on the surface. For those of us who live stabilized, routine lives, mysteries can be a way to enter a state of awe. They represent a form of intellectual sandbox, where one gets to stretch what is known, toy with fear, or defy official versions. The unexplained, the bizarre, the unsettled, these are all reminders of something larger than oneself.

In 2003, Two Individuals Successfully Stole A Boeing 727 From Luanda International Airport In Angola

The Mystery Of The Icon Preserving Bees

Beehives with religious icons mysteriously preserved inside honeycomb cells, an interesting mystery that still baffles people today.

For a decade, a beekeeper near Athens, has kept a tradition: every spring, he slips icons of Christ, the Holy Virgin and different saints in his beehives, in order to bless his bees and his yearly honey production. And every year, the very same mysterious phenomenon occurs: bees make their honeycomb cells around the pious images, meticulously avoiding covering them.

Man, people are gullible. Someone from the church could just break some of the honeycomb off around that part of the image, and claim that this is how the bees made it. Or put some substance that bees dislike on that part of the picture, wait for them to finish, and then take the substance off.

Hi. Iconographer here. I learned that the traditional blue pigments, when combined with acid, produce a highly toxic gas. Honey naturally contains various organic acids, the amounts of which vary depending on the type of honey. Examples include formic acid, lactic acid, and oxalic acid. Bees aren't idiots.

Also, mysteries offer a kind of fellowship. They generate shared narratives that people can relate to, discuss, and disagree about. The enduring interest in Jack the Ripper, the Dyatlov Pass tragedy, or the Voynich Manuscript is not just about facts; it's about being part of a cultural phenomenon.

Natalie Wood Lived Her Life Afraid Of Dark Water. She Disappeared Off Her Yacht In 1981. No One Can Explain How She Got In The Water

Smiling woman outdoors paired with a forensic body diagram showing notes on superficial abrasion in a mystery case.

Film legend Natalie Wood was 43 when she went on a weekend trip with husband Robert Wagner and costar Christopher Walken. The boat’s captain, Dennis Davern, reported tension onboard. Wagner, Walken, and Davern all confirmed a heated argument on Saturday night, during which Wagner smashed a wine bottle.
Davern claimed Wagner said to Walken, “What are you trying to f**k my wife?” Natalie reportedly returned to the couple’s stateroom. Walken went outside. Wagner and Davern cleaned up the mess. Nearly 45 minutes later, Wagner discovered Natalie was missing. He believed she went to shore. At 1:30 AM, almost two hours after her disappearance, Wagner called for help— but not the Coast Guard. Volunteers and the harbormaster called the Coast Guard at 3:30 AM.
Natalie was found hours later floating in a cove, upright, eyes open, wearing a nightgown, red coat, and wool socks. The couple’s dinghy was found elsewhere, tangled in kelp, engine off and in neutral.
Wagner told people he thought Natalie went to shore, but also said he couldn’t imagine her doing so. Natalie, one of the last stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, was known for always appearing glamorous — yet she was found in sleepwear. She had long feared “dark water.”
Davern and others questioned why Natalie would try to use the dinghy alone at night in rough water. The case was initially ruled accidental drowning, but reopened in 2011 after new information emerged. Wagner is now a person of interest.
Witnesses John Payne and Marilyn Wayne reported hearing a woman calling for help at 11:05 PM. They kept a spotlight on the water for 20 minutes and heard two male voices speaking to the woman “almost mockingly.” Other reports described a man and woman arguing on the yacht around the same time.
Accounts of the dinghy’s condition vary. Some say it appeared unused; others say it showed signs of struggle and scratches. Natalie had long, pointed nails at the time.
In 2020, Wagner told his stepdaughter Natasha in a documentary that Natalie likely tried to tie up the dinghy, slipped, hit her head, and fell into the water. However, the autopsy showed an abrasion on her cheek but no major head trauma. If unconscious, her eyes likely would’ve remained closed, especially in cold water.

    The Winchester Mystery House

Historic mansion entrance with statues and garden, linked to interesting mysteries that still baffle people and visitors.

I watched a documentary on this house when i was 10 and it has stuck with me ever since. it’s about a woman named Sarah Winchester. Her husband and baby both died. Her husband owned a rifle company, and she went to a psychic. The psychic told her that she is being haunted by the ghosts of all the people who have died by the hands of those guns, and that is the reason for the tragedy that happened in her life.

To appease the spirits, the psychic told her to build a great house for them, and she was not allowed to stop building, or tragedy would strike again. She didn’t get help from anyone, but she did it and kept building for the next 38 years.

There are stairs that lead to nowhere, windows that don’t look out, hallways that wrap around. It has 161 rooms, and it’s huge.

Was it really the ghosts? Was she insane? I have no idea, but it’s the most interesting story i’ve ever heard.

I've just read about it on wiki. Interesting house, but a lot of the oddities were because of an earthquake where they didn't rebuild after. The stories about ghosts and such came after her death to sell tickets to the house.

Yeah, it's an interesting story until you follow up by reading the actual history. Most of the oddities can be explained by either the earthquake, which destroyed the top 2 floors, a tower and severely damaged other areas, or that she continued building work into old age, which led her to building things like a set of very shallow stairs which wind round themselves to help her be able to climb them with her arthritis

The house was very large for the era it was built in but, when you see it in person, it's actually pretty small. Modern rich folk all seem to want their houses to be gigantic but in the 1880s, no one wanted to live in an airplane hangar. Also, she was never a ghost-obsessed occult enthusiast. That myth was started by insecure men who didn't believe she deserved respect for her brains or business acumen.

Not Sure If It's The Biggest Mystery. But The Antikythera Mechanism Is Pretty Wild

Ancient mechanical device covered in corrosion, an intriguing mystery that still baffles people in history and science.

Dated to at least 60BC, possibly as old as 200BC, it's as complex as clockworks that didn't show up until the 1400s, over a millennium later!

It's just such a strange technological anomaly. Who made it? What else did they make and why haven't we found more stuff as advanced?

They were not everyday items, but mechanical devices like this one (it's an orrery) did exist, and are documented from both the time, and subsequently (there are documents from the Roman empire mentioning surviving Greek examples). We don't find them now as there have been 2000 years of fire, warfare and aging to cause them to be lost or broken, and being made largely of metal, many were melted down to be reused

The greek inventors made some amazing mechanisms. Temple doors that swing open automatically via water power and statues that “sang” if a fire was lit on the altar. Via a steam mechanism pushing down a lage bazuin in a container of water. And the famous steam ball and greedy cup of course. They loved to tinker.

Even if the solutions are advanced, they are not likely to quench the allure. Often, even the presence of alternative explanations simply reinforces the sense of mystery. A number of theories suggest that maybe the truth is actually out there lurking, just out of reach. Each mystery is a platform in which belief, skepticism, hope, and preoccupation coexist.

One of the frustrating things about science is that, the more we find out, the more we begin to get an inkling that we don’t know much at all about anything. This is why I think a lot of people reject science and intellectual pursuits; it makes them feel small and dumb so they think to themselves, “Why bother? It won’t improve my life in the immediate and lays bare the problems with my worldview.” It’s far more comfortable to just reject it all as “navel-gazing” and continue on in their self-deluded and solipsistic ways that are reinforced by their narrow experience and refusal to learn anything that doesn’t get them paid or laid.

The Devil’s Kettle Falls. There Are Reports Saying It Was Solved, The Water Ends Up In Lake Michigan, Etc. But There Is No Proof

Waterfall flowing through rocky terrain surrounded by lush greenery, representing interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

For those who don’t know, the Devil’s Kettle Falls are the bane of my existence. They are located in Cook County, MN. It’s a waterfall that splits into two streams as it comes over a wall of rock - one stream goes into the river connected to the falls, and the other stream falls directly into a hole in the rocks and disappears. Scientists have dropped all kinds of things down there like ping pong b***s, dyes, etc. and tracked surrounding water sources like lakes and rivers to see if the stuff turns up and it never does. The theory about the water ending up in the Great Lakes is a good theory, but it hasn’t been proven.

The hydrologists that claimed they “solved” it were just looking at water levels in the stream and in Lake Michigan, and their explanation for all of the things that’s been dropped into the falls and never resurfaced is “well the current is really strong it probably just disintegrated everything”? Hundreds of plastic items? Disintegrated?

There is also safety in the realization that there are certain things that refuse to be neatly resolved. In a world in which so much is knowable, in which information is gathered and outcomes can be anticipated, the existence of actual mystery resists the concept that all can or must be comprehended. It suggests that there are still border areas where certitude has yet to touch them. That mystery, though at times frightening, is also an acknowledgment that we are still explorers in our soul. Whether it's the cosmic mystery of life itself or the mundane mystery of the missing persons' case, the questions keep us engaged, animated, and reaching. Even if the answers never arrive, the search itself means something.

There's probably just a lot of people in that town that have certain genes that make having twins more likely. If people stay in the same small community for many generations and barely any new people come in, the same families keep having babies together and a certain characteristic (like a gene for twins) becomes more and more prevalent. Just basic evolution, isn't it?

And perhaps that is the most enduring reason we're drawn to mysteries. They mirror our own condition. We're question creatures, cast into a universe with no instruction manual. We live, move, love, and die not with infallible wisdom, but with fragments, surmises, and longings. In a way, every human life is a mystery in progress unsought in beginning, unforeseen in course, unknowable in completion. To be drawn to mysteries is to recognize, somehow, that we are one.

    The Indus Valley Script

Ancient carved stone tablet depicting a bull and mysterious symbols, an intriguing artifact tied to interesting mysteries.

There was a huge civilization in northern India and Pakistan around 3300-1300 BC. It spanned more area than any other civilization at the time. They invented writing independently, something only done 5-6 times in history. But to this day, with all the thousands of inscriptions we have and all the documented contact with other civilizations, we haven’t deciphered their writing. There’s no known Rosetta Stone, no known descendant scripts, no known documentation of the language other than what is written in the Indus Valley script.

But the biggest mystery isn’t how to read the script or what it says, but the question of whether we’ll ever be able to know. Is it even possible to decipher a language we know absolutely nothing about?

It's not a mystery that multiple civilizations independently invented writing. Once you shift from hunter-gatherer to agriculture, trade is inevitable. Some method of keeping track of trade is needed, as well as standardized weights and measures. Just like it's not a mystery that multiple civilizations built pyramids/ziggurats. It's simply the easiest way to stack stone so it won't fall down.

If the image above is an example, and there are enough similar examples then maybe it will be possible. Because of the horse image and the other pictograms, we can possibly infer from the picture above that the script is talking about: horses, or farming, or trade, or ... . If we have enough examples than we can compare them to each other, and possibly slowly deduce which symbols might refer to what.

They made some progress by comparing texts, etc. But it was discovery of pieces with the same statement in multiple languages (similar to Rosetta Stone) that finally made it possible.

A Man Dropped Off Photos Of People I’ve Never Seen At My House

Person standing by a mountain road surrounded by trees, illustrating one of the most interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

At the end of March a man in a blue 2000’s Chevy pulled up to our house while we were outside messing with our garden. He got out and placed this framed photo on a set of rocks about 100 yards away, up by our mailbox. He didn’t acknowledge us, he didn’t care that we watched him do it he didn’t even look at us. We live on the Missouri/Illinois border there is no terrain like this around us. This woman is not in our extended family when the frame was opened it was found to contain another photo of that same man with a child on his lap (most likely his daughter). This man didn’t have a license plate. We thought it was incredibley strange seeing how we have no idea who any of these people are and our family has lived in house house for 23 years. It’s a bit strange. I hope it’s a vacation photo of some kind, but I don’t know. The woman in this photo looks to be in her 30s-40s, while the photo itself looks to be taken in the 70s-80s. Let me know what you think.

If their family only lived their for 23 years, they didn't live there in the first half of the 70s, so she probably lived in this house in the early 70s. Or this was a place where they used to play when they were kids decades ago. Or she died in an vehicle accident close to where the mail box now is.

    The Circleville Letters

Stack of old letters tied with string next to a faded black and white photo representing interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

In 1976, residents of the small city south of Columbus Ohio began receiving handwritten sinister and graphic letters. Each letter included secret and dark details about their personal lives.

One resident received a ton of letters, accusing her of various unsavory acts. The resident was horrified and tried to keep the letters a secret until her husband began receiving them. The attacks on the family continued, with large posters appearing around town spreading rumors about their 12-year-old child. One day in 1977, the husband left the house after receiving a call from who he thought was writing the letters. A few minutes later, the husband was found dead at the end of the street dead behind the wheel. The letters began once again, this time accusing the sheriff of covering up the true nature of the death.

The harassment continued, this time with signs along the road and in 1983, the original resident who had been accused of having an affair pulled over to remove a sign. During the effort to remove the sign, she discovered a box was attached and inside of it was a small pistol. The gun was part of a booby trap designed to fire when the sign was removed.

The letter writing continued even after Paul Freshour, the registered owner of the gun was put in jail. In a new batch of letters, the author had promised to dig up the grave of a deceased baby and mail the bones to the police in the case of another potential affair turned m****r.

Hundreds of residents continued to receive personal letters until 1994 when everything stopped.

What gets me is how single minded the authorities were. They kept insisting he must be sending the letters even after he was incarcerated and actually punished him on the basis that he was breaking the prison rules by sending them even though they couldn't find any evidence that he was doing so. But they'd decided he was the letter writer so clearly he *must* somehow be sending them from prison without anyone in the prison being able to find out how rather than them being wrong about who was behind it all.

It's not that the universe is expanding and we find new planets etc bc of it, but that the empty space itself is increasing. Galaxies are getting further away from each other, and eventually, what will happen if it keeps going, is that gravity will lose out to the expanding force and everything will be torn apart, even atoms.

No One Knows Exactly Who ‘Founded’ Rome, Or When

Ancient Roman Colosseum under a blue sky, representing one of the most interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

All known records of the city's early history date from the 5th or 6th century BC at the earliest (which doesn’t help the usual foundation date of 753 BC) and all of the foundation myths are exactly that, stories. All we know with any certainty is that Rome was ruled by kings at some point in its early history. But we don’t know who founded Rome; if it really was by a Romulus type figure or if it was multiple villages that eventually merged into a single town. Even with the latter possibility, it’s unknown when those communities would have considered themselves as a single town or when they decided to call it ‘Rome’.

"Archaeological evidence indicates that Rome developed from the gradual union of several hilltop villages during the Final Bronze Age or early Iron Age. Prehistoric habitation of the Italian Peninsula occurred by 48,000 years ago, with the area of Rome being settled by around 1600 BC." "The founding of Rome is linked to the myth of Aeneas, a Trojan hero who, after fleeing the fall of Troy, is said to have settled in Italy and founded the city of Lavinium, which eventually led to the birth of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. However, most historians consider these stories to be myths rather than historical facts."

Between 1200 And 1150 BCE, Most Of The Civilizations In The Eastern Mediterranean Region Were Either Greatly Depleted Or Collapsed Entirely, Bringing An Abrupt End To The Bronze Age

Map showing invasions and migrations around 1200 BC in the Mediterranean, a key mystery that still baffles people today.

These civilizations were massively depopulated, their palaces and cities were destroyed or abandoned, and some transformed into small, isolated village cultures or nomadic herders. The Greek Linear B script was lost, and there is no written record of the following period of Greek history, meaning that Greeks of the time were probably illiterate.

This rapid decline affected - to one extent or another - major historical powers like Mycenaean Greece, New Kingdom Egypt, the Hittite Empire, and Assyria, among others.

And we don't know why it happened.

These were sprawling, thriving civilizations, with healthy economies, elaborate trade networks, complex bureaucracy, written language, and large-scale agriculture, and they just...died. For some reason. There are plenty of theories, of course, but ultimately there's no conclusive evidence that tells the story of how the Bronze Age collapsed into the intermediate period that preceded the Iron Age.

Volcanic eruptions don’t affect the climate for 50 years and we’d have evidence of multiple or long-lasting volcanic activity in the region.

I once read a fictional short story where the whole crew was in it as a put up job. The stewardess shoved a dead body in a parachute and a dummy cash bag out the emergency steps. The crew then split the money afterwards. I don't recall all the details, but the writer seemed to be rather imaginative and to have covered all the bases.

The One That Always Gets Me Is The M****r Of Missy Bevers

Surveillance footage shows a person in a hallway, capturing a mysterious event that still baffles people.

She was unalived in the early morning at a church that she taught yoga at. Security footage from the church showed the murderer roaming the halls of the church all night, but that’s not what’s weird. What’s weird is that the murderer was dressed head to toe in police riot gear. It is the weirdest and eeriest video footage and is just unsettling. There’s lots of theories, but her m****r has never been solved and I believe there hasn’t even been a real suspect in the case.

The Eriksson Sisters. They Are Said To Have Suffered From A Shared Psychosis Known As "Folie À Deux"

Two girls in matching outfits facing away with arms spread wide, symbolizing the mysteries that still baffle people.

They're the forty year old twin sisters from Sweden, who became front page news in the UK in 2008 when they repeatedly ran into traffic on the M6 motorway. A day or two later one of them, Sabina, stabbed a man to death in his home for no apparent reason. She fled the house, striking herself on the head with a hammer as she ran to a highway bridge. She jumped off, falling 12m and landing on a highway. She survived, with several fractures.

I've heard the audio from a tv news crew who happened to capture part of the M6 incident and just can't forget one of them yelling at her sister about how "they'll steal your organs". Whatever happened to them was intense, sudden and largely unprecedented.

Ancient carved stone statue under a thatched roof depicting mysterious figures linked to interesting mysteries baffling people.

One of the most enduring mysteries in human history is the disappearance of the ancient Maya civilization. The Maya were a highly advanced civilization that flourished in Central America for hundreds of years before mysteriously disappearing in the 9th century. The Maya never disappeared. There are still millions of Mayans who live in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Some Mayan cities had been abandoned by the time the Europeans invaded, but there were many other thriving Mayan cities, towns, villages, etc. At the same time of the European invasion of the Americas, Roman coliseums, baths, temples, etc were still standing but no one asks "where did the Romans dissappear to?" Humans leave places and move on all of the time, that doesn't mean that they disappeared. Just google search the Maya in Guatemala and you'll see that they are still thriving

actually we do have a pretty good idea, as the last Mayan kingdoms didnt collapse until the early 1400s (it slowly collapsed over 500 years, starting with the collapse in Mexico, and Belize being the last area, just before the Europeans came), and from their digs we see huge underground cisterns with evidence of droughts and disease. Scholars believe there was a rolling drought over hundreds of years in the region, which led to disease outbreaks, and led to a slow collapse as each region was affected. They also found in Belize sacred caves with human sacrifices in them from the last decades of the last Mayan civilization group (cave was discovered in the 1970s by a farmer) which provided more insight.

We'd certainly know more about what happened if the first Catholic missionaries from Spain hadn't destroyed the vast majority of Mayan written records, which is exactly what happened. Only 4 codices survived. The explanation is probably somewhere in the unknown number of those that were destroyed. https://www.ebsco.com/research-starters/literature-and-writing/maya-books-destruction

"The phrase “Arcana imperii” is a Latin term that can be translated to “secrets of power” or “mysteries of authority” in English. The two words have specific meanings: – Arcana: This refers to secrets, mysteries or hidden things and is often used to describe esoteric or confidential knowledge. – Imperii: This is the genitive form of “imperium”, which means power, authority, or command. It is usually associated with governmental or sovereign authority. When combined, “Arcana imperii” suggests hidden or secret knowledge related to power, authority, or command. It can be used in discussions about the behind-the-scenes aspects of political or organizational power. The phrase can also be more broadly applied to refer to the concealed knowledge or strategies that contribute to success and influence across various fields."

Nearest star to ours is 26 trillion miles away. And it is one of trillions and trillions of stars. And that is the CLOSEST one. The idea of the size of the universe, let alone just our piece of our own galaxy is underestimated, even when someone thinks they have a handle on it. And humanity has only been on this planet for a small slice of its existence. Other beings could have come here multiple times, seen nothing of interest, and moved on.

The answer is simple. Aliens did come to visit Earth on November 11th, 2016. They left skid marks on their way out. Another group of aliens tried again in November 2024. They decided to just put Earth under permanent quarantine, because any planet stupid enough to elect Trump twice should not be allowed to infect the rest of the universe.

Mathematically, it makes sense we are alone. The odds of Humans coming into existence via evolution (once the core building blocks of single cell organisms and assuming perfect conditions for billions of years) are 1 in 10 to the 1.2 billionth power. That is 1 in 10 with another 1.2 billion zeroes after the 10 (though have said it could be as low as the 580,000,000 power), and that is just Humans, and only the components needed for Humans, not the rest of our world. So the odds of anything beyond single cell organisms is basically mathematically impossible, and even single cell is very very low.

There Is An Abandoned Subaru Near The Appalachian Trail In Ga With Expired 2024 Maryland Tags And Personal Items Left Inside

Abandoned dirty silver Subaru in the forest with cluttered interior, illustrating one of the most interesting mysteries still baffling people.

Boyfriend and I were out riding motorcycles when we came across it. I made him stop on the way back but I was too chicken to open the doors even though they appeared unlocked.
Inside, there was a 2024 planner, shoes, muscle milk, Dunkin Donuts breakfast pack, Reebok lanyard, phone chargers, blankets, pillows, caterpillar branded underwear(?), and various other personal items/electronics.
Maryland temporary tags that expired 08/24, and stickers in the front from Virginia. The weirdest thing is the driver window being c*****d, like they planned to come back that day, but never did.

How is that not the VERY FIRST THOUGHT for some people? I'd take a bunch of photos without touching anything, and send them to the police with the locaiton and a request to please check on the owner of the car. And they SIT on this info like a hen on an egg until a random thread pops up and they think "Oh wait, I got just the thing for this!" I can't even...

Most likely someone went hiking or something, got lost or injured and couldn't make it back.

Not uncommon at all. Friend of mine did something like this. Parked near a trailhead in Florida. Body was found several days later as he had a heart attack while hiking.

The main line of text in the middle reads "Talk to your neighbors", but I'm too crunched for time to translate the rest. It is indeed basic wingding font, though, so it's very easy to translate, if a bit tedious.

Yeah that's what a lot of word processing software does. It reverts to wing dings when it can't find the font that it was originally used to create the file.

Select text; then format > character > font : wingdings. It would be more interesting if it were also a cryptogram

Found In An Abandoned Backpack Along A Hiking Trail In California, Along With An Assortment Of Old World Maps From The Early 1900's

Typed and signed contract from 1988 involving members of the organization S.A.L.T., an intriguing historical mystery document.

Was hiking alone with my dog and found this off the trail, half buried beneath a tree. Looks like it had been there a while but all the paperwork inside it was dry, and in pristine condition. Nothing else but this and those really old maps. Anyone able to shed some insight?

Sounds like a made-up contract between friends. SALT sounds like something my high school friends and I would have made up. Covering a driving test, a date, and possibly two 16 birthday parties I'm wondering if Traci was an introvert and they were trying to pull her out of her shell. Or not doing things she should/wanted to and this was an attempt to get her to commit to try.

Agree. A silly contract between friends. I don't know about now, but in the 80s it was common for groups of teen males to give themselves ridiculous names. In my high school, it was the FOP- Fraternal order of Phantoms. I forgot all about that until I read this.

Foggy forest shrouded in mist, creating an eerie atmosphere that reflects interesting mysteries that still baffle people.

In India, in the early 2000s there a creature called the 'Monkey Man" who was attacking the people living in Delhi and people were so terrified from him that they stopped sleeping in night so that they can protect themselves. We still don't know whether it was real or was it just a rumour that people started believing in.

    Old Mask?

Old photo of a mysterious elderly person standing with hands in pockets in a vintage outdoor setting, intriguing mystery concept.

Found this photo in my great grandmothers house that, to me, is very creepy. Asked around and nobody seemed to know what it was or care. Anyone who would know is either too old or has passed. Does anyone here know what mask this is of? All I know is I’m sure this photo was probably taken in the Philippines and before the 1990s.

Neanderthals never died off they were assimilated. DNA proves it. Many of us are part Neanderthals.

Yes, I was tickled to discover that I have an unusually high percentage of Neanderthal DNA. There are not many examples of Denisovan DNA, but at least one individual has been shown to be a first generation cross between Denisovan and Neanderthal.

Neanderthals were not stupid and brutish. They were intelligent and some interbred with homo sapiens. Climate change was what decimated them as a whole. They were larger than homo sapiens and required more calories than they could get during the last ice age. They migrated south and met with humans.
