White Protesters Joined The March On Washington D.c. During The Civil Rights Movement, In August 1963
What's really crazy/sad is this could be a picture taken a few years ago.
Marlon Brando and Charlton Heston were among the white celebrities who were there to support Dr. King, and I read today that Tony Bennett was at the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma
Tony Bennett died yesterday, July 21, 2023. He was 96 years old. RIP
Load More Replies...Forgotten heros. Makes me think of James Zwerg who was one of the white members that participated in the freedom rides. He also attended Fisk University for a semester as an exchange student.
remember folks- this is wasn’t heroism. it’s a bare minimum to support equal rights :)
I did see pictures like this in my history books. This is a celebrated part of our history; please don’t try to make it out like it’s actively hidden or ignored! We have a national holiday dedicated to what Dr. King did, and there are all kinds of videos and documentaries that show what an amazing time this was. And things happening today are not quite the same as then.
The situations are different, but racism is still racism. It's apparent now, just as it was then.
Load More Replies...Even in school learning about civil rights movements we were painted with the idea that all white people were for segregation, now people are finally seeing the forgotten heroes. Not everyone is bad..
That’s so odd. What kind of school would teach that? That doesn’t even make sense.

Regardless of the movement, time will show that young adults are quick to get involved in movements that fight for equality and fairness.
And many of those "young people" are now "senior people!"
Load More Replies...That's such an amazing picture, taken under such harrowing circumstances, it never once dawned on me that white people would join in - however, fantastic that they did....
Photos provide us with a powerful lens through which we can see and understand history. This Facebook page's 'History Images' act as visual documentation, capturing significant historical events, cultural shifts, and everyday life.
Although photos can be pretty factual, the history of our world has been shrouded in tales and riddles. From ancient civilizations that left behind incredible structures to unexplained disappearances and mythical figures, let's peel back the layers of time and intrigue ourselves with some unsolved mysteries of history.

They are beautiful. Though let's not forget that they are people living in two different worlds. They have "Christian".names, which means they had already been brought into the "colonization" world, yet they still are trying to live in their own, and their true lives, in the native world. To do this, this family walked a fine line, and more than likely had some very aggressive things done to them to be people walking in two worlds. It would have been so much better to see this family and then be told their true names.

I don't know why but he looks really sad and filled with anguish to me.
FACTS : In support of an attempt to impose American racial policy on France, U.S. military authorities sent a memo to the mayors of the Meuse division upon the arrival of the African American 372nd Infantry Regiment (The "Red Hand") in 1918. It asked that the French not integrate the Black troops into French society: "The question is of great importance to the French people and even more so to the American towns, the population of which will be affected later when the troops return to the United States. It therefore becomes necessary for both the colored and white races that undue mixing of these two be circumspectly prevented." The request was generally disregarded by the French.
They tried in UK too, asking pubs not to admit black Americans. At least one pub put up a notice banning white Americans
Load More Replies...say that to most Vietnam vets and they'll tell you - No choice - I was drafted
Load More Replies...FACTS : It was documented on July 5, 1917 that over 700,000 African Americans had registered for military service. However, they were barred from the Marines and served only in menial roles in the Navy. Blacks were able to serve in all branches of the Army except for the aviation units.
FACTS : Though most African-American units were largely relegated to support roles and did not see combat, some African Americans played a notable role in America's war effort. For example, the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters", was assigned to the French Army and served on the front lines for six months. 171 members of the 369th were awarded the Legion of Merit. However, the American War Department restricted black soldiers from fighting where possible, as shown by the forced retirement of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Young as they did not want the black officer commanding white soldiers or leading a full black combat division.
One more item for your list: all the African American troops in France were in volunteer units raised specifically for the war. The regular army’s all-Black troops (Buffalo Soldiers) were kept on the Mexican border and in the Philippines. The crack pot racial theory being that, as a tropical branch of the human race, they were more suited there.

Most of us have heard the tales of Britain's King Arthur and his magical sword, Excalibur. The story has been alive for around 1000 years and as of today, no one knows if it's real.
The interesting fact is that the ancient warrior is linked with places all over Britain and the story might have been about a real person, just not so magical. What we surely know is that real royals have been named after him and that to this day, this story inspires us.
After all, the king is meant to unite the Britons in their darkest time: "Legend has it that he's not actually dead, just sleeping, and that one day, when Britain needs him most, he will rise again and defend the country."

Just save it? And do what with it? If stored in the hall of shame, maybe. Or the Hall of Historical mistakes / behavior that is no longer acceptable. Of course remembered, but tearing down statues of reprehensible peoples actions is an act of history also.

Another mystery is the location of Egypt's beloved Cleopatra's tomb. According to ancient writers, she and her lover Mark Antony were buried together in a tomb in 30 B.C.
Plutarch wrote that "the tomb was located near a temple of Isis, an ancient Egyptian goddess, and was a lofty and beautiful monument containing treasures made of gold, silver, emeralds, pearls, ebony and ivory".
The exact location is a mystery up to this day, though The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities recently made a claim that they found it. Archeologists discovered a tunnel under Egypt’s ancient Taposiris Magna Temple that may lead to the long-lost tomb.

Load More Replies...As a child I remember watching a documentary on TV where these critters were brutally clubbed to death by cruel, ruthless men, whom I hated. I'm still half traumatized by it.
Clubbing seals is animal activist propaganda. The hackpa isn't used for killing seals, they're shot humanely with a rifle. The seal Hunt is the most regulated hunt in canada. The only thing the club is used for is to drag the already dead seal away from thin ice, so the hunter doesn't have to step out on the ice to get the body and put themselves at risk. Also the white coats are illegal to hunt. They have been for three decades.

Notice how they said Palestine, not Israel... too bad we didn't build Israel in Germany
Palestine was literally a province of the Ottoman empire. After WWI, which they lost, the Brits renamed it the British Mandate of Palestine. This included Jordan, by the way, which nobody ever bats and eye about, but okay. The term "Palestinians" as a heritage, like an actual group of people identifying as Palestinians, didn't emerge until the early sixties, when Arafat decided it would probably be smarter marketing wise to "unite" all the Arabs that lived/previously lived in the British Mandate.

Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th, though there are debates that he wasn't really born on this day. According to 'Live Science', "the date Dec. 25 may have been chosen because it's close in time to Saturnalia, a Roman festival that celebrated the god Saturn.
The earliest records of Dec. 25 being the birthday of Jesus date to the fourth century A.D. — more than 300 years after his birth". According to ancient records, early Christians were never able to decide on the day; in fact, even the exact year is unknown. Thus many Catholic branches celebrate Christmas on a different day.

Let's learn about one of the big world wonders, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and debate whether it was real. The ancient city of Babylon was located around where modern-day Iraq is and was believed to have the impressive hanging gardens with plants at a height above ground level. The date of their existence is not surely known and modern-day archeologists have not been able to locate the remains of such a place.

Titanic Survivors Marjorie And Charlotte Collyer In New York Immediately Following The Sinking Of The Liner In 1912. [colorized]
The people in the lifeboats heard the cries of the dying as they slowly faded away. I bet the survivors heard that forever.
The horror in their eyes! Were they accompanied by someone else on the Titanic?
This might be silly, but I *really* hate it when someone colorizes an old photo. It just suddenly feels fake. Dumb pet peeve, so I try not to mouth off about it too much, but I’m in a lot of pain right now and a little short-tempered! Two beautiful, strong ladies, though!
I hate "colorizations" of old photos too! P.S. - hope you feel better soon! :(
Load More Replies...A lot of the Titanic survivors suffered with what we now know as PTSD, many for the rest of their lives.
You can see in this photo, you can feel it, how during the event, the parents must have shielded the child from the brunt of the trauma, how the mother continues to do so. The daughter still has pain in her face from grieving her father, but she is not quite as despondent; whereas the mother seems to be looking back towards the ship, where the men had to stay behind. 😔
Wow this is a deep picture. You can see the anguish in her face. She would never have a good nights sleep again. So sad
Sadly the Mother (Charlotte) died of Tuberculosis just 4 years later, very sad.
With a Star Line blanket on her lap, no less! A physical reminder of the ship and her loss.
Some things we'll never know, but sometimes that's the fun of it all. Let's admire the 'History Images' that freeze moments in time, honor the mysteries of history and embrace the ones that await us in the future. For it is through the exploration of the unknown that we truly come to understand ourselves and the world we inhabit.

Indian Chief Speaking To Army Officers About The Construction Of Garrison Dam. North Dakota, 1946
I have no witty comment. What America did to the Native Americans is appalling, period.
I visited this area this past June. Met a lady at an over look to Lake Sacacawea and she shared her family's story losing their land etc. There is a memorial and information about the Indigenous people who lost everything. While you can tell there is a lot more wealth here than Pine Ridge (the poorest group in the United States) research the oil rigs on the Berthold Reservation. It's very sad.
If any other country encroached on American land the way the American government is STILL DOING TODAY to the indigenous tribes of North America, it would be seen as an ACT OF AGGRESSION. Every single CENTIMETER of promised land should be given back. 😤🤬 How we, as citizens of this country consistently oppose the government's actions and yet the government continues to act in the interests of outside forces... it is... disgusting.
Including the land that your residence sits on? Taken to its logical conclusion, ALL the land in the US should be given back, even your house.

that particular movie is literally the worst godzilla movie ever made. the infamous tristar godzilla (the one in the title) is basically an off brand jurassic park but godzilla is pregnant, lays eggs that hatch and cause most of the chaos, and then gets tangled in a cable bridge and killed with missiles. godzilla fans started calling this version "zilla" because it removed all of the "god" aspects of the character and turned it into a glorified t rex
I know its bad rep but I for one really like it. It just is a different take on the franchise. Not to say just an American take. Don't really like the modern ones though (except Shin Godzilla).

Why do mermaids wear sea shells? B shells are to small and D shells are to big. (I'll see myself out)
That lady in the front is having a problem with her wardrobe. Nothing showing, but the cups in her mermaid costume are facing the camera and her torso and her 'real' top are facing to the right. It was probably good enough on a 1927 film camera with no pause feature on the playback.

Unlike humans, where showing the teeth is a smile and indicates happiness, when chimpanzees show their teeth, it's a threat behavior. Jane Goodall's opinion was that this was not anger, but fear: fear of the capsule and fear of the electric shocks they used to "train" Ham (and his successor Enos) to perform tests during their flights.

Biggest issue, to make it water tight, it had to be airtight. This meant she had no oxygen inside for the entire ride. For those asking why, she had lost her job, was headed to the poor house and figured she'd try her luck and perhaps end up on the circus circuit. However, she told everyone she was 42 when she was actually 62 and people weren't happy to see this old lady
When she came out, she was recorded as saying "No ought ever do that again!" Good advice. Someone else later tried the Niagara Falls barrel ride, and all that was found was the barrel lid, and the person's arm still strapped to it.

This looks like a parody of a spacesuit rather than the real deal!
We had so very much to learn, from scratch. The math was virtually invented on the spot. Look at the evolution of the spaceships, or suits. We weren't even sure a being could live in space, even inside the ship for a short time. We had to invent everything. There are often little snippets about the James Webb, or about the astronauts currently on the space station. The space station has a working toilet. Alan Shepard had to pee during his Mercury flight. No one had even thought about that. They told him to just wet himself. After his flight, astronauts wore adult diapers. Mercury proved space flight was possible, and showed the first bugs in the systems. Gemini was the training yard for the moon. During the Gemini missions, we learned how to maneuver, how to dock, how to do an EVA, how to fix errors. Apollo 8 was the first manned ship to get to the moon. No one knew if the ship engines would be capable of ignition to get back to a free-return trajectory. The living space was tiny. The LEMs were the size of two phone booths. We invented cars that were capable of driving on the moon. We sent out the Voyager missions. Now we have probes studying the outer planets, the Voyagers have left the solar system proper. People on the space station exercise. They routinely leave the station to do repairs. We're preparing to send people to Mars. It's so taken for granted now, but in the beginning, we thought spacesuits might just look like costumes from a bad '50's B movie.
I watch the the moon the I remember the first moon landing, today the Space X boosters come back and land and Im just amazed by it. My kids watch and are like "so what".. Perspective.

Load More Replies...Every year on a street by my house there’s a biker parade and thousands (I’m not kidding) of bikes go pouring up the street, some dressed as Santa Clauses, the bikes all decorated some with elves as passengers and they beep their horns and wave and we all wave, there’s that rumbling sound, Harleys, and it’s so loud and exciting! There are Christmas gifts on the back of some bikes, some Mrs Clauses-can you tell I just love it -and it goes on forever! I can literally stand on the corner for half an hour/more and the bikes keep coming! I’ll think this is crazy, there can’t be more-there are more- it’s overwhelming and the best part is they’re all on their way to deliver donated toys that they’ve collected over the last year for the Toys for Tots program here in the city! Toy’s for the kiddies delivered by bikers! It’s so exciting—how many endless bikes there are. I live one house away -it’s my favorite part of X-mas, it’s so fun! Thanks for reading if you got this far! Had to share!
Then Santa was run over by a double-decker bus. Moments later, he reappeared, fully restored, in the North Pole. "Oh goddamn it! That is so inconvenient!... Dasher? Dancer? O, Prancer and Vixen! Here, Comet! Here, Cupid! Come, Donner and Blitzen! Santa needs to bum a ride back to Londontown..."
That would be Father Christmas in 1947. We never used the name Santa Claus when I was growing up in England.

Man In A Pressure Suit With A Beaker Of Boiling Water In A Vacuum Chamber Simulating An Altitude Of 65,000 Feet, Feb. 8, 1953
The water is at room temperature. It's boiling because the air pressure is so low. It is a fun way to show off that his suite is working.
Load More Replies...Just so no one posts anymore about why he isnt wearing gloves with boiling water: water boils (makes bubbles) at low pressure. It doesn't HAVE to be heated to boil. For example, try this. Get an ordinary bottle, about 250-300mL (quart). Put about 1cm (½ in) water in. Microwave till the water is boiling. (Try get a heat proof glass jar or something, but something with a metal lid, maybe a mason jar). Put the lid on straight after while it is hot, as the boiling in heat and making steam drives out most of the air in the jar. Close the lid quickly. Let it cool to a temperature where it can sit comfortably on your hands, like about 40 deg C. Run it under a cold water tap. Voila, it starts boiling again. Why? Because the cool water cools it further, makes any remaining steam condense, and reduces the atmospheric pressure in the jar to near vaccum. Since there's no more air to hold the water down, it spontaneously starts evaporating as bubbles - boiling.
Phase-Diag...-Water.jpg
There are two ways for boiling water.
1. same pressure, increase temperature. That is the mot usual way to do it in everyday life, for cooking as example.
2. same temperature, decrease pressure. That's what is shown here. The suit is tested in very low pressure, and the boiling water is for educational purpose.
Because he is performing a simulation.

Even if they're not, they would have been passed off to the trainer at a very young age and given no choice but to perform. I'm not saying that there aren't still issues around the subject of sports training and consent for children, but things have improved somewhat. It is clear, though, that many parents are still willing to overlook physical, sexual, and mental abuse and overwork of the child in exchange for a shot at future wealth.

Hughes lifted the giant aircraft 33 feet (10 meters) off the surface of Long Beach (Calif.)
