Marlon Brando and Charlton Heston were among the white celebrities who were there to support Dr. King, and I read today that Tony Bennett was at the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma

Had I been alive at this time I’d of been part of this march too, human beings have human rights and should not be limited/restricted/taken away from. This picture says what I and so many others feel. 👌🏼

Forgotten heros. Makes me think of James Zwerg who was one of the white members that participated in the freedom rides. He also attended Fisk University for a semester as an exchange student.

People also forget that Benjamin Franklin freed his slaves and became an abolitionist. More proof that he was one of the greatest Americans of his time.

I did see pictures like this in my history books. This is a celebrated part of our history; please don’t try to make it out like it’s actively hidden or ignored! We have a national holiday dedicated to what Dr. King did, and there are all kinds of videos and documentaries that show what an amazing time this was. And things happening today are not quite the same as then.

Young people, like this wonderful photo shows, have always been on the front lines despite the fears of personal harm, the potential loss of freedom, and/or the stigma of permanent labeling. Regardless of the movement, time will show that young adults are quick to get involved in movements that fight for equality and fairness.

They are beautiful. Though let's not forget that they are people living in two different worlds. They have "Christian".names, which means they had already been brought into the "colonization" world, yet they still are trying to live in their own, and their true lives, in the native world. To do this, this family walked a fine line, and more than likely had some very aggressive things done to them to be people walking in two worlds. It would have been so much better to see this family and then be told their true names.

She would have been given a European name, but the tribe would also give her a traditional name of their own. This practice still goes on. Some Indigenous parents are trying to forgo the whole 2 name concept and just go with an Indigenous name, but Vital Statics is making it difficult because some of the sounds and spellings don't have character in our alphabet to represent that sound. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/indigenous-names-vital-stats-1.6426239#:~:text=A%20growing%20chorus%20of%20Indigenous,used%20by%20some%20Indigenous%20languages.

FACTS : In support of an attempt to impose American racial policy on France, U.S. military authorities sent a memo to the mayors of the Meuse division upon the arrival of the African American 372nd Infantry Regiment (The "Red Hand") in 1918. It asked that the French not integrate the Black troops into French society: "The question is of great importance to the French people and even more so to the American towns, the population of which will be affected later when the troops return to the United States. It therefore becomes necessary for both the colored and white races that undue mixing of these two be circumspectly prevented." The request was generally disregarded by the French.

FACTS : It was documented on July 5, 1917 that over 700,000 African Americans had registered for military service. However, they were barred from the Marines and served only in menial roles in the Navy. Blacks were able to serve in all branches of the Army except for the aviation units.

FACTS : Though most African-American units were largely relegated to support roles and did not see combat, some African Americans played a notable role in America's war effort. For example, the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters", was assigned to the French Army and served on the front lines for six months. 171 members of the 369th were awarded the Legion of Merit. However, the American War Department restricted black soldiers from fighting where possible, as shown by the forced retirement of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Young as they did not want the black officer commanding white soldiers or leading a full black combat division.

One more item for your list: all the African American troops in France were in volunteer units raised specifically for the war. The regular army’s all-Black troops (Buffalo Soldiers) were kept on the Mexican border and in the Philippines. The crack pot racial theory being that, as a tropical branch of the human race, they were more suited there.

Most of us have heard the tales of Britain's King Arthur and his magical sword, Excalibur. The story has been alive for around 1000 years and as of today, no one knows if it's real.

The interesting fact is that the ancient warrior is linked with places all over Britain and the story might have been about a real person, just not so magical. What we surely know is that real royals have been named after him and that to this day, this story inspires us.

After all, the king is meant to unite the Britons in their darkest time: "Legend has it that he's not actually dead, just sleeping, and that one day, when Britain needs him most, he will rise again and defend the country."

The man who delayed withdrawing troops from Vietnam before an election because it would hurt his chances for reelection. Some of his statements on the NY Times release of The Pentagon Papers showed his true character. "Going after all these Jews. Just find one that is a Jew." He really feared intellectuals and even thought about reinstating the House On Unamerican Activities Committee.

Another mystery is the location of Egypt's beloved Cleopatra's tomb. According to ancient writers, she and her lover Mark Antony were buried together in a tomb in 30 B.C.

Plutarch wrote that "the tomb was located near a temple of Isis, an ancient Egyptian goddess, and was a lofty and beautiful monument containing treasures made of gold, silver, emeralds, pearls, ebony and ivory".

The exact location is a mystery up to this day, though The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities recently made a claim that they found it. Archeologists discovered a tunnel under Egypt’s ancient Taposiris Magna Temple that may lead to the long-lost tomb.

Clubbing seals is animal activist propaganda. The hackpa isn't used for killing seals, they're shot humanely with a rifle. The seal Hunt is the most regulated hunt in canada. The only thing the club is used for is to drag the already dead seal away from thin ice, so the hunter doesn't have to step out on the ice to get the body and put themselves at risk. Also the white coats are illegal to hunt. They have been for three decades.

PPSH41. 900 rounds a minute. 7.62x25 tokarev. Its an open bolt so the current config shows the weapon is not cocked. Fantastic gun.

Oh boy, and what they're about to go through -- they'll get to British Palestine just in time for Britain to pull out. I guarantee you that all three of them will be fighting for independence in about two years.

Yeah, my grandma just tattooed numbers on her arm to keep the story alive (/s) even though she never ever talked about it. She actually looks a bit like the girl on the left and is also from Poland, but she came to NYC after she was freed from the camps, not Palestine.

We wouldn't have the mess in the Middle East if the Germans, French, Poles and Russians weren't racist. along with Canada, the UK, the US and all the other countries who refused to grant asylum because of prejudice.

Yeah, they don't teach about the turning away of the St. Louis in American schools... or the rallies at Madison Square Garden... or many other things. Just the stuff that makes us look good. It's all based on greed. Doesn't matter who/what it is.if there's money to be had, that's the dotted line/land border we'll sign on.

Palestine was literally a province of the Ottoman empire. After WWI, which they lost, the Brits renamed it the British Mandate of Palestine. This included Jordan, by the way, which nobody ever bats and eye about, but okay. The term "Palestinians" as a heritage, like an actual group of people identifying as Palestinians, didn't emerge until the early sixties, when Arafat decided it would probably be smarter marketing wise to "unite" all the Arabs that lived/previously lived in the British Mandate.

Thank goodness they survived! When I was a child, a holocaust surviver came to our school and told us about it. I'll never forget the horror of seeing a human being who had be branded like a cow! The people in this photo may be from different countries, but they are united in their faith and it must be a relief for them to proudly proclaim once again they are jews.

Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th, though there are debates that he wasn't really born on this day. According to 'Live Science', "the date Dec. 25 may have been chosen because it's close in time to Saturnalia, a Roman festival that celebrated the god Saturn.

The earliest records of Dec. 25 being the birthday of Jesus date to the fourth century A.D. — more than 300 years after his birth". According to ancient records, early Christians were never able to decide on the day; in fact, even the exact year is unknown. Thus many Catholic branches celebrate Christmas on a different day.

A cocky lil grin, a bored stare, and those long lil pianist fingies almost placed like they're strumming along the prop impatiently. You can tell he'd rather be doing anything other than standing still! 😂 Side note: Einstein played both the piano and violin, both so well he would do so absentmindedly to relax when stressed/stuck. Even saying at times he wished how he were a musician.

Universal serial *bus*, then you have bus lanes with north and south bridges(one up north/top, one down south/bottom) on the motherboard(because shes really the person that connects everyone) and PCI express(another bus) which went on a direct bus lane(express) instead of having to queue up with the slower hardware. Most of it had easy names with an uncomplicated way of explaining it, but jargon spin needed to make it sound hard to so they could charge more.

Let's learn about one of the big world wonders, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and debate whether it was real. The ancient city of Babylon was located around where modern-day Iraq is and was believed to have the impressive hanging gardens with plants at a height above ground level. The date of their existence is not surely known and modern-day archeologists have not been able to locate the remains of such a place.

You can see in this photo, you can feel it, how during the event, the parents must have shielded the child from the brunt of the trauma, how the mother continues to do so. The daughter still has pain in her face from grieving her father, but she is not quite as despondent; whereas the mother seems to be looking back towards the ship, where the men had to stay behind. 😔

Met a lady at an over look to Lake Sacacawea and she shared her family's story losing their land etc. There is a memorial and information about the Indigenous people who lost everything. While you can tell there is a lot more wealth here than Pine Ridge (the poorest group in the United States) research the oil rigs on the Berthold Reservation. It's very sad.

If any other country encroached on American land the way the American government is STILL DOING TODAY to the indigenous tribes of North America, it would be seen as an ACT OF AGGRESSION. Every single CENTIMETER of promised land should be given back. 😤🤬 How we, as citizens of this country consistently oppose the government's actions and yet the government continues to act in the interests of outside forces... it is... disgusting.

Including the land that your residence sits on? Taken to its logical conclusion, ALL the land in the US should be given back, even your house.

False, they have it a lot easier than the rest of us. They get to hunt/fish whenever they want, no taxes on the res, healthcare paid for. Their actions and how they choose to live their lives is what holds them back.

Hitchcock was nasty to all of his leading ladies. Tippi retired and opened a wildlife waystation, after making friends with a tame lion. Her daughter also acheived fame in the movies as Melanie Griffith.

It was crushed by the ice. The incredible thing is that the whole crew survived. Also that this photo, taken on a glass plate was carried with them over ice and the southern ocean to Elephant island where most of the crew lived in a hut made of upturned lifeboats for many months while Thier captain and a small group sailed thousands more miles of the southern ocean to get help from south Georgia.

In a couple of days Poland will be celebrating the 79the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, but some of the commemorative events begin today. Fewer and fewer Uprising veterans attend every year. They are an amazing group of people. They truly understand human dignity and honour, and have remained advocates of democratic values. This is especially important in a country where democracy is failing.

that particular movie is literally the worst godzilla movie ever made. the infamous tristar godzilla (the one in the title) is basically an off brand jurassic park but godzilla is pregnant, lays eggs that hatch and cause most of the chaos, and then gets tangled in a cable bridge and killed with missiles. godzilla fans started calling this version "zilla" because it removed all of the "god" aspects of the character and turned it into a glorified t rex

Until 2020, EuroDisney had the Buffalo Bill's Wild West" dinner performance, recreating (sort of) the original shows of Buffalo Bill. I'm intrigued that Europeans, but especially the French, have a fondness for the American Wild West. They have children's animated TV series Lucky Luke (I'm a poor lonesome cowboy), The Daltons, and a restaurant chain Buffalo Grill.

That lady in the front is having a problem with her wardrobe. Nothing showing, but the cups in her mermaid costume are facing the camera and her torso and her 'real' top are facing to the right. It was probably good enough on a 1927 film camera with no pause feature on the playback.

Although the official death toll is now estimated to be approx 3000, the original official count was around 500. This discrepancy was largely down to the fact that the disproportionately large number of Chinese victims weren't considered to be Americans and were deliberately not included in the tally.

Unlike humans, where showing the teeth is a smile and indicates happiness, when chimpanzees show their teeth, it's a threat behavior. Jane Goodall's opinion was that this was not anger, but fear: fear of the capsule and fear of the electric shocks they used to "train" Ham (and his successor Enos) to perform tests during their flights.

Imagine if this was a human, an unwilling one. How dare we ever do this to another creature, particularly one that understands a lot that is going on. Imagine his sickness, his fear, the change in environment, being alone all of the sudden for only god knows how long, the physical discomfort, changing everything from how you eat to sleeping, to everything floating all of the sudden!! We have NO right to ever treat another creature, especially one that is such a close relative! I'm so sorry for this. And we wonder why some animals want to attack humans!

Interestingly these aren't workers in the sense that they didn't work for a company. It was a gold rush and the miners were working for themselves. The conditions were horrible and there was undoubtedly exploitation but it's not like they were being forced to work there by [insert name of mining company here]. https://cyndivision.com/2021/03/24/the-story-of-serra-pelada-a-gigantic-gold-mine-in-brazil-that-turned-into-hell/

Sebastião Salgado is an incredible photographer, and this series is just one of his many humanistic images. Definitely worth your time to research more of his photographs. You can also read (or watch TED talk) about how these photographs made him very sick.

She sent the cat down in the barrel first, to make sure it was survivable. She designed the barrel herself, it had leather straps inside to hold onto. Biggest issue, to make it water tight, it had to be airtight. This meant she had no oxygen inside for the entire ride. For those asking why, she had lost her job, was headed to the poor house and figured she'd try her luck and perhaps end up on the circus circuit. However, she told everyone she was 42 when she was actually 62 and people weren't happy to see this old lady

When she came out, she was recorded as saying "No ought ever do that again!" Good advice. Someone else later tried the Niagara Falls barrel ride, and all that was found was the barrel lid, and the person's arm still strapped to it.

We had so very much to learn, from scratch. The math was virtually invented on the spot. Look at the evolution of the spaceships, or suits. We weren't even sure a being could live in space, even inside the ship for a short time. We had to invent everything. There are often little snippets about the James Webb, or about the astronauts currently on the space station. The space station has a working toilet. Alan Shepard had to pee during his Mercury flight. No one had even thought about that. They told him to just wet himself. After his flight, astronauts wore adult diapers. Mercury proved space flight was possible, and showed the first bugs in the systems. Gemini was the training yard for the moon. During the Gemini missions, we learned how to maneuver, how to dock, how to do an EVA, how to fix errors. Apollo 8 was the first manned ship to get to the moon. No one knew if the ship engines would be capable of ignition to get back to a free-return trajectory. The living space was tiny. The LEMs were the size of two phone booths. We invented cars that were capable of driving on the moon. We sent out the Voyager missions. Now we have probes studying the outer planets, the Voyagers have left the solar system proper. People on the space station exercise. They routinely leave the station to do repairs. We're preparing to send people to Mars. It's so taken for granted now, but in the beginning, we thought spacesuits might just look like costumes from a bad '50's B movie.

Every year on a street by my house there’s a biker parade and thousands (I’m not kidding) of bikes go pouring up the street, some dressed as Santa Clauses, the bikes all decorated some with elves as passengers and they beep their horns and wave and we all wave, there’s that rumbling sound, Harleys, and it’s so loud and exciting! There are Christmas gifts on the back of some bikes, some Mrs Clauses-can you tell I just love it -and it goes on forever! I can literally stand on the corner for half an hour/more and the bikes keep coming! I’ll think this is crazy, there can’t be more-there are more- it’s overwhelming and the best part is they’re all on their way to deliver donated toys that they’ve collected over the last year for the Toys for Tots program here in the city! Toy’s for the kiddies delivered by bikers! It’s so exciting—how many endless bikes there are. I live one house away -it’s my favorite part of X-mas, it’s so fun! Thanks for reading if you got this far! Had to share!

Then Santa was run over by a double-decker bus. Moments later, he reappeared, fully restored, in the North Pole. "Oh goddamn it! That is so inconvenient!... Dasher? Dancer? O, Prancer and Vixen! The water is at room temperature. It's boiling because the air pressure is so low. It is a fun way to show off that his suite is working.

Just so no one posts anymore about why he isnt wearing gloves with boiling water: water boils (makes bubbles) at low pressure. It doesn't HAVE to be heated to boil. For example, try this. Get an ordinary bottle, about 250-300mL (quart). Put about 1cm (½ in) water in. Microwave till the water is boiling. (Try get a heat proof glass jar or something, but something with a metal lid, maybe a mason jar). Put the lid on straight after while it is hot, as the boiling in heat and making steam drives out most of the air in the jar. Close the lid quickly. Let it cool to a temperature where it can sit comfortably on your hands, like about 40 deg C. Run it under a cold water tap. Voila, it starts boiling again. Why? Because the cool water cools it further, makes any remaining steam condense, and reduces the atmospheric pressure in the jar to near vaccum. Since there's no more air to hold the water down, it spontaneously starts evaporating as bubbles - boiling.

As our professor at the university explained: "The eggs need the 100°C, not the bubbles" - to explain the effect of air pressure, because any construction work (and cooking) on high altitudes needs some serious consideration.

Phase-Diag...-Water.jpg Phase-Diagram-of-Water.jpg There are two ways for boiling water. 1. same pressure, increase temperature. That is the mot usual way to do it in everyday life, for cooking as example. 2. same temperature, decrease pressure. That's what is shown here. The suit is tested in very low pressure, and the boiling water is for educational purpose.

Looks to me like he HAS gloves on, they're just a different color than the suit. Otherwise, it would be hard to seal the suit.

Even if they're not, they would have been passed off to the trainer at a very young age and given no choice but to perform. I'm not saying that there aren't still issues around the subject of sports training and consent for children, but things have improved somewhat. It is clear, though, that many parents are still willing to overlook physical, sexual, and mental abuse and overwork of the child in exchange for a shot at future wealth.

de Weldon sent the original molds to Harlingen, Texas, home of one of the men, Cpl Harlon Block, where it is now on display at the Marine Military Academy. Interestingly, I read that one of the other marines who raised the flag, realizing that the original news account didn't include Cpl Block's name, hitchhiked from Arizona to South Texas to tell Block's mother that Cpl Block had helped raise the flag. Harlon Block was one of the men who was killed in action after raising the flag.

“By 1947, the U.S. government had spent $22 million on the H-4 and Hughes had spent $18 million of his own money. Finally, on Nov. 2, 1947, Howard Hughes and a small engineering crew fired up the eight radial engines for taxi tests. Hughes lifted the giant aircraft 33 feet (10 meters) off the surface of Long Beach (Calif.) Harbor and flew it for 1 mile (1.6 kilometers), for less than a minute, remaining airborne 70 feet (21 meters) off the water at a speed of 80 mph (128 kph) before landing. The H-4 Hercules never flew again.“
