I always got a lot of opinion from older gents on how my white GSD mix shouldn't get dirty and why I let her play in the dirt. I on the other hand loved that I saw every piece of dirt on her before she jumped on the couch. no chance in hell you overlooked a speck of dirt

I agree. The snout is too long and slender. Eagles are big but grey wolves are huge. A wolf would most likely have a pack mate as well.

The scientific term for analyzing new ideas by placing them beside something familiar is analogical thinking.

Psychologist Dedre Gentner's structure-mapping research shows analogies work because people map relational patterns between a known "base" and an unknown "target," not merely surface similarities. That relational mapping is what lets a learner transfer understanding from one domain to another.

Gentner herself often uses the classic analogy of flowing water compared to electrical circuits.

In the "base" domain of water flow, water moves through pipes under pressure from water towers or elevation. In the "target" domain of electricity, electrical current flows through wires driven by voltage (electrical pressure).

Despite the differences—pipes vs. wires, water vs. electrons—the relational structure is the same, and it's that shared relational schema that makes the analogy meaningful.

Education researchers have put this into practice. Studies and systematic reviews of classroom work find that analogies, especially when visual or explicitly mapped out, help learners anchor abstract scientific concepts in everyday experience.

Teachers commonly use images, textual cues, and audiovisual aids to compare known and unknown domains, and these strategies are associated with improved comprehension when used methodically.

I had a mild case of scoliosis where my rib cage was tilted to the right a few degrees. This lowered my right should two inches. The constant effort to hold my head up straight was causing constant neck muscle spasms. Rolfing deep tissue body work straightened my posture. I went through the ten session series and it was like a religious transformation of my whole body. No surgery was required. It is the tissue, fascia and muscle that pull the spine out of alignment. You have to free all that shortened stuck tissue to change the spine's curve. Deep tissue bodywork can achieve that, but it is not a comfortable process.

both of my lenses look like what you see on the right here. There are 3 different lenses in one lens. And the lines are very much visible. The center lens is for viewing most everything, top lens has a focal pint of about 20 inches, bottom lens is for close up. Very much like a tri-focal but arranged differently. What would not be visible to you are the double prisms that are in each lens. This also means my glasses are GLASS, My script isn't available in polycarb. Takes anywhere from 1 - 3 months to get a pair of lenses.

I'm so torn on this issue. The LED lights provide much needed security and safety. But what artificial lighting is doing to the wildlife is abominable. Light the paths, but not the buildings closed for the evening would be a good start.

LEDs whipenout my night vision in a way that traditional lights don't, so I can see there, but it's minutes from leaving the LED path that I am safe to walk elsewhere. Traditional lights my eyes adjust in seconds.

LEDs can be tuned to pretty much any color you like. It is choice that they wanted them to be white. Yellow/orange might be pretty, but if those were paths where I had to walk at night, I will take the white light ones any day.

I notice the LEDs (on left?) are downlights, that is they are directed to shine down. The traditional light are much more invasive with their lighting: they shine out, down, scattering light all over. I LOVE down lights--I like a dark sky at night.

There are cities in the US where LED street lamps are banned. Specifically those in a close proximity to a observatory. This is because they have filters can remove the ambient glow of the "traditional" (generally sodium) street lamps, and can't do the same for LED lamps.

Smoker who never cleans their windows. My grandpa smoked inside, but always when we visited, he cleaned everything and aired for days (and of course smoked at balcony). There was never visible signs of smoking in his apartment, and the smell wasn't really overpowering after all the effort. Smoking inside (or smoking anyway) is not a good thing, but it is possibly to keep the effects kinda in control and not make it obvious it's a smoker's apartment.

It could be that but… it could also be UV from the sun reacting with the type of plastic used for the blinds (photooxidation). UV light can yellow certain plastics. My upstairs blinds are different than the rest of the house and as a result that one set is no longer white but has yellowed similar to these.

You should see the inside of a smokers computer. Normally you can just blow the dust out and life for the PC goes on. Smoke combines with the dust and heat and becomes a sticky uncleanable mess.

For those citing nitrogen in the dog's urine as the reason for this atypical grass growth, I kind of doubt it. There is nitrogen in the uria in a dog's urine but the nitrogen is of such high concentration that it is more likely to scorch the grass than help it grow. There are also acids and salts in the urine that can disrupt the osmotic process of the soil making it hard for the grass roots to absorb water.

Wildland fire fighters must only wear base layers made of natural fibers for this reason. Synthetic fibers are essentially plastic and will melt to their bodies if they were to get burned over (briefly engulfed in flames). If they are able to escape death in this situation, their burns are less severe than if wearing synthetic undergarments. Similarly, their footwear is modified to resist the soles melting away from the upper, some fire boot makers even join the rubber sole onto the boot with screws instead of using adhesive alone.

This is fine. That's primarily Norway spruce, which will grow 2-3 feet each year. Removing the undergrowth is also a good thing, though it seems counter intuitive. To put it simply, the wildfires that happen on a regular basis in California? They're made worse by the fact the state doesn't allow regular programs to remove undergrowth, which if allowed to accumulate too far, will create fire hazards. So, removing all the plant undergrowth helps remove the chance of wildfire. It also allows native plants grow by removing prominent invasive species, and the tree canopy.

Yes! They are called "ladder fuels", which is actually a pathway for the flames of what might otherwise be an easily manageable grass fire to climb up to the canopy of trees. If trees are densely grown together, this can result in something called a "sustained crown run" which causes devastating destruction and is much harder to put out. Trees with thick bark are actually able to withstand low-intensity fires (grass fires), but once the flames reach the top of the tree it is rare foe the tree to survive. Once a large swath of well-established trees have burned until death, roads then start to wash out as the dead roots let go of the burnt earth. A canopy fire will also carry the flames right to the roof of homes. Low intensity grass fires are easily manageable and even beneficial. Once ladder fuels take the flames to the canopies, the fire can become so intensely hot that the fire can start to create its own weather ("fire whirls", give them a Google, they're terrifying)

Bit of a difference between de-orbiting from 400 kilometers and floating down on a parachute from 100 kilometers. One of them is slowing down from 17,000 mph. The other one reaches a maximum of 2,000 mph, and never has a any heat build up.

That's because the homegrown one looks like it's actually ripe. The storebought is so green! (And before someone asks, no, pineapple doesn't ripen after it's picked.)

Pineapples are indigenous to Jamaica and the one from the balcony looks like the original pineapple we still grow in Jamaica. I don't know how they get the supermarket variety so big. The little ones are super sweet.

You are looking south/southeast over the Columbia River gorge. The reason there are trees obscuring the view at the bottom is due to strict regulations on keeping the area green and pristine. Lots of contention, but they seek to protect its legacy from houses taking over.

A teenager was on a trail with some of his friends when he thought it would be a good idea to light a firework and drop it onto the trees below. A woman who witnessed him do this said, "Do you know what you just did? You just started a forest fire!" She immediately turned back to report what happened. The teen and his friends tried to leave quickly, but before they could all load up and take off, the woman identified him, and authorities stopped them. Hikers were stranded overnight on the upper trails, trails and habitat were destroyed, and historical structures were damaged and destroyed. The punishment for the teen responsible for the Eagle Creek Fire included a $36.6 million restitution order, 1,920 hours of community service, and five years of probation. The restitution was meant to cover the extensive damages and was to be paid over time, with the possibility of forgiveness after 10 years if he completed probation and complied with the payment plan.

For most of its length, the Columbia River is the border between the state of Oregon (pictured) and Washington state (the tiny portion in the bottom left is Washington). The fire jumped the river during the worst of it. It was devastating to watch. Some excellent hiking trails along that area including around Multnomah Falls.

I live on an island in the Columbia River, just below the gorge. The fire was the worst I have lived through in years. The smoke was so heavy I couldn't leave home for days. Happily, I have seen the recovery in the gorge last year and flying over it this year.

For the US campers, you know that car that always rolls in late at night? "Oh, I hate setting up a tent in the dark" you sigh happily as you snuggle in? That's not a late arrival, they're recording license plates. I spent an afternoon with wildland fire investigators on a huge fire scene. Fire in motion always burns up to the base of a tree, pole, rock, whatever, on the windward side and leaves a tiny green unburned triangle on the opposite side of the pole. They just follow all those tiny arrows backwards until they get to the campfire ring when it started. Then they call in the cops and lawyers. It was comically low tech.

European health studies on salt consumption indicate salt consumption is not the boogeyman it has been made out to be. Apparently there are salt sensitive people who get high blood pressure and have to eliminate it from their diet. But the studies also found that people who fanatically avoid all salt pass away at a younger age than salt consumers. Otherwise, salt is probably OK to eat in moderation, and if you have a very physical job and sweat a lot, you actually need to consume salt or you can get muscle cramps.

Then I think they dislocate the joint to be able to saw off the end of the femur and jam that spike in there. I refuse to watch a video of the surgery - I'll throw up.... What isn't visible in the photo is how d**n deep that pin goes into your bone and how long it is. My mom had hip replacenent surgery and even if it went well, it was really slow and painful healing. After seeing the photo where the pin reached almost down to the knee, it's no wonder why it's so painful ans slow-healing.

Both hips replaced. A little uncomfortable for the first 2 weeks, pain meds took care of most of that. A couple of common sense restrictions, like don’t cross your legs, the first few months. I am very glad I had both done. I’m totally back to normal now, no pain, no restrictions. I’m commenting so that people know it’s not that bad. I’ve read that some people didn’t have the same results I did. I would check out all your orthopedic surgeons to find who’s the best available.

Both hips are as bad as each other so not sure why they are choosing separate operations ?? Just wondering also which country are you from ?? I’m from Australia wonder if that makes a difference 😊

Dropping these bombs was the most humane thing Truman could have done. Yes, it was terrible for the women and children who were burned, but it ended the war immediately and caused the Japanese to capitulate. Millions of soldier's lives were saved as a result of this action. I know that Truman must have felt great anguish in making this decision.

This is a stupid question but how are the rivers intact? They barely changed at all. You'd think they'd be obliterated. I guess I don't know much about how bombs work...

The bomb was detonated as an air burst, just under 2000 feet altitude. The blast/shock wave was devastating to humans and most buildings, but it did not affect the hardscape, save for burns. Had the bomb detonated on the surface, there would have been a crater, and some damage might have been done to the immediate river banks, but not enough to rearrange the contours much. While the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs were very powerful, check the rivers in Europe, like the Thames and Rhine. Many bombs dropped there, river courses never changed.

Our Chicken Eggs Before And After Free Ranging

Darker yolks come from diet, not free ranging, though free ranging may offer the opportunity for wider variety of foods for the hens to nibble on, thus picking up the extra vitamins and nutrients required for a dark yolk. However, if hens have access to certain foods (lots of bugs, leafy greens, etc...) even in a fenced area without free range access, the yolks will also be this dark orange color. Source- ive had a bunch of chickens for a bunch of years and in the winter when they're all cooped up (hens hate their feet touching snow) i give them certain foods to produce produce eggs with yolks of this color.

You have it wrong. This is a good thing. The 60-year-old one is a slow growing that if cut down for the wood we need wouldn't be able to be replaced for something like 28 years. Whereas the newer one is a species can grow to the same size in 5 years, and most likely was even grown on a tree farm for this very purpose.

I had the opposite (almost) experience on my one overseas trip, though maybe because I need gluten free and lactose free. I flew with United on the way there and got a lasagne and a ton of packaged snacks (though quantity was partly because a friend's dad was the one stocking the flight and gave me heaps as I boarded). Flew home with Virgin and got a very dry bit of chicken (no sauce or anything) and some steamed veggies.

"The tower was built with "hurricane-proof" glass, but in 2005 it sustained heavy damage to its atrium and several upper floors during Hurricane Rita, which made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane. In 2007, the facility underwent major repairs and security upgrades such as the addition of ballistic protection to the exterior glass. The reconstruction of the lower floors and the renovations of the atrium, tower facade, and major tenant spaces were designed and project-managed by Vincent-Shows Architects of Sulphur. The tower was significantly damaged again in August 2020 by Category 4 Hurricane Laura. The building lost the majority of its windows, and the south-facing side was destroyed. In October 2020, Hurricane Delta further damaged the boarded-up building. The tower was left vacant and in 2023, the city gave Hertz Investment Group, who had acquired the building in June 2007, a deadline of November 2024 to either repair or demolish it." From Wiki
