“IKEA Tips, Hacks And More”: People In This Facebook Group Share The Best Hacks They’ve Tried
IKEA has been designing and selling ready-to-assemble furniture for decades. The company operates 460 stores in 62 markets and aims to, as it says, "offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home ... products at prices so low, that as many people as possible will be able to afford them."
And it's succeeding. Every year, IKEA welcomes more than 680 million customers in its stores and around 3.8 billion on its website, amounting to sales of 39.5 billion EUR (or 41.8 billion USD) in the fiscal year 2022. However, with around 10,000 products, some clients are having doubts if they can make the most out of the retailer's supply.
This is where the internet comes in. There's a Facebook group, called 'IKEA tips, hacks and more!' and as the name suggests, it invites people to share their proudest shopping discoveries. Whether you are already planning a complete makeover for your place or are simply looking for some DIY project inspiration, this online community might have exactly what you need.

The Window Seat I Built In My Bedroom, Using The Nordli Drawers
This is amazing! It lets the light in and you still have the storage! Well done
Unfortunately if I sat on any drawers I got from IKEA, there would be a nice hole roughly the size of my butt on top
I'm not sure those are strong enough to sit on, at least not on a regular basis. Also, don't most windows have a heating element directly underneath, either a floor grate (forced air furnace) or a radiator (steam heat)? I don't see how this room is heated. Is it a hot climate?
Might be a regional thing? I've never seen a floor grate or heating element located under a window, and only once have I seen a radiator next to one.
Load More Replies...Ingenious! It opened up the room by giving more space and bringing in more light; and a cozy place to sit and read. I see they changed the blinds with a shade and the put a light on the side of the wall. Nice.
I am amazed that the view out the window has transformed so well and the window seems to be right to the lower ceiling
We Aren’t Fully Done With This Laundry Room Upgrade But It’s Already So Much More Functional!
I'm with you on this one. I mean, this looks amazing, but is not a "hack".
Load More Replies...They lost the hanging space for things coming out of the dryer.
This after shot with cabinets.... it amazes me that this is an extra room, almost like a cupboard in America. In the UK this is bigger and nicer than most people's kitchens, and yes we have the washing machine in the kitchen. It's VERY rare to have a separate laundry room here. Also kinda rare to have a drier because of lack of space.
IKEA hacks have even become their own cottage industry — other retailers sell products specifically made to work with the company's furniture.
So how did the brand become so influential? At the heart of its success is value. Similarly to McDonald's, you know what you’re going to get when you shop at IKEA, and it's going to be affordable.
In fact, price is so important to the company's strategy that it first decides on how much a particular product is going to cost and then reverse engineers the construction.
IKEA Kitchen Cabinets In The Bathroom
I'm sure they can. Bathrooms and kitchens are both fairly damp areas in a house

The company has a "democratic design approach," according to Antonella Pucarelli, the chief commercial officer of Ikea retail U.S., which means that it “deliver[s] form, function and quality products at a low price. Even though our products are affordable, we don't compromise on quality."
(IKEA has had high-profile recalls of millions of chests and dressers after several tipped over and harmed children. In response, it admitted the chests and dressers could be dangerous and offered free kits to anchor the chests and dressers to the wall, as well as refunds.)
I Used Fejka Plant Tiles To Decorate My Veranda Roof
Put them together in rows of 4, then fastened each row to a 5x1m plastic garden fence. Put in a light chain. Everything was then fasten to 8 shower rods. For fastening I used green metal thread. The shower rods had to be a 2-3 cm wider than the space so they could hold up.
Dust on the ceiling? Not really. And what’s the problem with spiders? They are not harmful or detrimental, on the contrary they are very useful.

You can get those trays at dollar stores, you just have to inspect them pretty closely to make sure the latches and hinges (plasitc is not always sturdy) to close them are decentrly made so nothing falls out if you aren't handling them wrong. Or looking at them funny.

I Needed Storage Space In My Hallway For All My DIY Stuff. This Is My Idasen. I Went To The DIY Store And Got A Cheap Roll Of Wallpaper For The Doors. Now My Stuff Is Hidden Away
That's a $550 cabinet. For $550, I'll just buy a cabinet with opaque doors.
Great when you DIY. I have GSE:. Get Someone Else. Even my thumbs are all thumbs!
You can sometimes get removable Con-Tact paper (basically removable wallpaper) at hardware stores (and some dollar stores, if you're lucky). This is great if you are renting and don't like looking at white cabinets. Or if you have a metal file cabinet that is a gross baby poop brown or army green colour and you want to look at something pretty (like paisley or arglye print) when you put away important paperwork!
I would have never thought to use wallpaper. We did this to our buffet table because we wanted to use the cupboards for storage not cute decor you could see thru the glass doors. We used decorative contact paper, ended up being too see thru so we kept the paper backing on it so the design popped more and it wasn’t see thru.
For The Cat
Our spoiled cat has many options but only uses them for a bit, then moves on to the next.
Some of IKEA's products are made from wood, some are made from particleboard (recycled wood chips fused together), keeping production more affordable.
IKEA furniture is shipped and sold in flat-packs, which makes transporting it cheaper, and customers put it together themselves (or pay for someone to do it for them), further reducing labor costs.
IKEA Malm Chest Of Drawers, Bought Used, Removed 4 Drawers So The Dogs Each Got Their Own Sleeping Space In The Living Room
I Made The Kids Moppe A Bit More Fun With Wallpaper
If I had these wallpapers in my hand, I would say that they don't fit together and I wouldn't use so many patterns, but this result is perfect.
Fun fact: Multiple patterns can be used together and look cohesive if they share colours in common.
Load More Replies...Yes! I had one of these years ago and even though this one is precious, all I can think about is how hard the drawers were to open bc of how much they scraped together! Like nails on a chalkboard!!
Load More Replies...I know the paper on the top left drawer is a pear, but because I have been watching around 10 years of Game Grumps and now find "boy humour" (poop jokes, sex jokes, basically stereotypical 12 year old boy humour, despite the Game Grumps being over 30) funny, the pear looks like a...different thing. I am a 40 year old female, who is not a prude, or a pervert, but I do not love that seeing a pear and thinking it looks like a ... is my first thought. On a happier note, that is really pretty paper! I like the blue colours in the top piece of paper in the first image. Underneath the hand.
Who Says IKEA Is Only In Favour Of Home? We Have A Different Home. A Home On Wheels. Our Facility Is Made Entirely Of IKEA
I’m What Is Known As An Afol (Adult Fan Of LEGO) And I’ve Come Up With An IKEA LEGO Minifigure Hack
I’m what is known as an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) and I’ve come up with an IKEA LEGO minifigure hack.
I used:
* 2 x IKEA Gnedby DVD/CD units (often cheap on Gumtree as people are getting rid of their DVDs/CDs) screwed together
* 1 x IKEA Oxberg glass door
* Moulding (I used 42x11x275 primed wood lengths from Bunnings)
* I finished it off with 3x20 LEGO plates (trimmed from 32x32 baseplates)
Now I have dust free LEGO minifigure display/storage! 😊
Edit:
I had a third Gnedby that was broken and I could salvage the shelves from, so the number of shelves shown in my pictures is more than you’d get with just 2 units (so with 2 units you'd just space the shelves a little further apart)
I had to drill the holes for the door to go on as they were not pre-drilled - I used the holes on our Billy bookcase as a guide to where they should be positioned.
You can get around 25 minifigs on each stand (more if you space them closer), however I did 20 on most shelves as the door obstructs a bit on either side. Where there were themes that had more than 20 minifigs I just put the ones I didn't like as much in the column that would be harder to see.
And the simple style of the furniture is not just because it’s a Scandinavian aesthetic. It's actually easier and cheaper to make affordable versions of such furniture look good.
"IKEA's aesthetic is pared down and minimal, which is not an accident. Uncomplicated forms with very little applied decoration are easier to manufacture. More can be produced in a shorter amount of time, increasing efficiency and decreasing production costs," Ashlie Broderic, interior designer for Broderic Design, told CNBC Make It. "The Malm bed is an excellent example of simple rectangular shapes combined to create a very chic bed."

Load More Replies...I’m surprised that shelf with the plant, etc. doesn’t get smooshed. Also, don’t Murphy Beds already have some kind of nice exterior that you pick?
Murphy beds are ridiculously expensive. This is probably a cheaper option and just as pretty.
Load More Replies...I hope that is a fake succulent, because if the bed is folded up to have more floor space, that plant in the "headboard" area of the murphy bed will not do very well. I know succulents don't need much water compared to "regular" plants, but they do need light. Being hidden behind a mattress is not great for plants. Real plants anyway.
But why? You can't use the storage because it's full of bed, you have to take the bed down every night, and you can't use the extra floorspace because that's where the bed goes. I'm sure there is a reason, but I can't see it.
If this is a guest room used occasionally, then you can use it as an office, play room, etc. You are able to keep the bed out of the way until needed.

And "most of IKEA's furniture is available in black, white, or unfinished wood. By producing more items in fewer finishes, IKEA takes advantage of economy of scale,” Broderic said.
All this makes the “aesthetic per dollar” ratio very high, added neuromarketer and author of The Buying Brain Dr. A. K. Pradeep.
He explained that IKEA's affordable style is its "category-busting-metric," or what makes it stand out from all the other brands in that space.
Just Glue A Vinyl Record Onto A Marius Stool For A Neat Table
Waste of a perfectly good LP. FYI, if memory serves, records can get scratched, so maybe coat it with something to keep that from happening.
That unaltered stool does not look comfortable for sitting. The holes probably wouldn’t feel nice on your bum. If it’s a stool to boost your height, it also seems a bit suspect. If you find your stool looking like this in the toilet, seek help immediately.

Using a regular airer you shouldn't really be putting dripping clothes on it for maximum effectiveness. Either an extra spin cycle, or use a towel (apparently microfibre towels are the best) to remove excess liquid and help dry faster.

IKEA Sektion Hack
This is very ingenious! All split-level homes should have this as a built-in.
IKEA's stores also appeal to the subconscious mind, which is the primary decision-maker. “Furniture is set up in its natural environment,” Pradeep said, which your subconscious brain appreciates. “Every single thing there is contextually in position. The brain perceives it, understands its inherent value, and therefore desires it.”

No More Rambling To Get A Hanger
What few spares I have are hung on the racks for when I need them.
Load More Replies...The one thing I hate about hangers is when they get all tangled up with other hangers and you end up pulling out 20 when you only want one. I see that happening with this storage arrangement.
Not to mention, once you grab the one that you need, the rest of the 20 hangers fall. AARRRGGGHHH!

I'm doing this. My Xtra hangers drive me nuts falling off the shelf.
But at the same time, there are always new and unexpected items to discover along the way. Both of these things are positive triggers in the brain.
"A great store will give you the sense of comfort and familiarity and will also give you the pleasure of discovery. That is when retail becomes retail therapy," Pradeep highlighted.

Load More Replies...It often feels that even though IKEA products are minimalist and beautifully designed, there are 10 billion parts that you, the buyer, have to put together. But that might also be a win for the company. We feel more connected to our purchase if we have to put work into it ourselves.
Daniel Mochon, a researcher and associate professor of marketing at Tulane University’s business school, calls this the IKEA effect. "We come to overvalue the things that we have created ourselves,” Mochon told Shankar Vedantam, the host of NPR's podcast Hidden Brain.
It’s definitely recommended that you leave books where toddlers can get to them. However, we couldn’t do that with our son because he absolutely destroyed books, even board books. It was his curiosity and wanting to see how it worked, he’d bend the book the opposite way to see how far it’d go. We literally locked the books up. His books from that age are taped together with so much packing tape. We love books, we read all the time. He just wasn’t left alone with books until he was about 4. So I wish you luck through the toddler years! Cherish those babies.

Yeah, like sure, make it, but it won't look like this as soon as the kids are in there and honestly, I would rather have a colourful place I could make a mess in rather than some sterile beige display room. That's why my bedroom is so chaotic - could be aesthetic, but I'd rather have paper butterflies and random posters.

Load More Replies...This is the most depressing playroom I've ever seen. Do you even allow your child to play in it?
“Imagine that you built a table. Maybe it came out a little bit crooked. Probably your wife or your neighbor would see it for what it is, you know, probably a shoddy piece of workmanship. But to you, that table might seem really great because you’re the one who created it," Mochon said. "It is the fruit of your labor, and that is really the idea behind the IKEA effect."
And it's a big part of the reason why communities like 'IKEA tips, hacks and more!' exist in the first place. You get hooked.

This Is My IKEA "Hack". It's A Restaurant And Toilet For My Cat
This might look nice to humans but it is absolutely not nice for the cat. The space is much too small and the smell build-up must be disgusting. Also they prefer to eat and drink in different places, and they definitely prefer not being cornered into a small box while doing it. Same thing for the litter box. I mean they might comply with that at first, but I would absolutely not be surprised if the cat starts to do things outside the litter box.
Yes! My cats don't even like their drinking bowls next to their eating bowls so this certainly would not work for them. Besides us humans wouldn't like to eat next to the toilet either.
Load More Replies...Please don't put your poor cat's food near the litter box! How would you feel about eating all YOUR meals while sitting on the toilet?
Love the idea! I've always been told not to have them shịt where they eat though 🤔
For the people comment this is not good because the good and the litter is in the same room, did you look the picture? The food is in the upper room, the litte ris downstairs. Water and food next to each other. No problem. You can buy bowls like they built into each other to eat and drink (sorry for my English as I am not native speaker)
Still too close. Food should be near where the people eat, FAR AWAY from the toilet. Same thing for humans.

It was one of the kindest things anyone had ever done. His 5th and 6th birthdays we went all out. So celebrate when you can!

First, it is up to people how they spend their money. Secondly, the clothes rails can be reduced to one (to hang bigger clothes), another put in instead of shelves if needed and so on.

I like the before too. I had (have) five growing kiddos. Such a scene when it came to the entrance way! Complete chaos, especially in winter. Coats, snow pants, long johns, mittens, boots. What a scene! They're all grown now. It's funny how troubled I would get with all the messes...and now...well, I miss it. Thought that would be my life forever. At least it felt that way at the time.

These are the old Ship of Theseus in a lot of cases. "I brought this cheap, flimsy furniture and all I had to do was use my carpentry skills, expensive tools, replace the chipboard with some sturdier wood, paint...". Like sure, it all looks great, but you might as well have just built it from scratch.
Building my wardrobe from scratch would've cost me €2000. So I bought IKEA Pax (€700), borrowed an electric saw from my dad (could've rented for €7/day), and cut Pax to size where needed, then assembled everything. I saved more than 50%. I know the material is not as good as custom made closet, but it was either Ikea or no closet at all.
Load More Replies...I liked the post, but only some of them were hacks. Using a shoe cabnet to... store shoes! Is just using the product for it's intended purpose. Better to re-lable the post as ikea furniture rather than hacks
I loved it! i just love people getting creative with their interior! Sure, some 'hacks' may feel a little underwhelming, but the realization that you don't always have to buy exactly what you want, but that you can tweak, paint, assemble and alter things to suit your taste is such a great step. Just start small, the creative thinking skills and technical abilities will come along the way and last a lifetime
I used the wine bottle shelf grids for my snow globe and geode collections :)
I really don't like ikea furniture. These are great makeovers, but they're not very solid. They aren't made to last. I'm sure I'm the minority here.
If you get the solid wood stuff it will last for a long time. I have a lot of that. The board/ fiber/ laminated stuff is not very good. Avoid the laminated kitchen counters at all cost.
