Traveling is an amazing way to explore new places and immerse yourself in different cultures. But unfortunately, not everyone shares this mindset.
Certain tourists leave a trail of ignorance and entitlement wherever they go, from littering beautiful landscapes to behaving inappropriately at sacred sites.
Below, we’ve gathered some of the most shocking examples of this behavior. Scroll down to see for yourself, and don’t miss our chat with travel writer Pati on how we can all be more mindful when exploring the world.

Travel To A Foreign Country And Complain About Bad English
Even if you can speak Thai, there is no reason to complain about someone's second language.
The sense of entitlement required to feel angry that citizens of a certain country are speaking the language of that country is off the charts.
I bet the people who are complaining can't write English as good as what's on this sign even though it's supposedly their first language
My sister in law keeps apologising for her English (she's Polish) I keep saying but your English is better than my Polish!
I know the feeling! I went to a bodega (on the outskirts of our suburb I was so happy moved in) to get enchilada sauce and the cashier who couldn’t have been more than 16 offered to give me a recipe to make it myself and picked out the ingredients. She apologized for not being able to speak much English, I apologized for not being able to speak Spanish and that she was doing great! So when the pandemic hit we started Duolingo. Still struggling but I can read and communicate enough for simple things. Their English is still better 😊
Load More Replies...passive aggressive at its finest. Respect. I have no qualms calling out yanks who feel the need to call out the grammar or spelling of people who are not first language English by asking them how many languages they speak.
It is only right to learn the basic language of the place you're visiting... Put in an effort and appreciate anyone who can communicate with you when you're struggling.
As someone who spent 2 years in Thailand back in the 70s...........That's a Great Sign! Just knowing a few basic Thai words will work wonders.
This. When I meet foreigners in my own land, I figure if I could speak their language as well as they speak mine, I'd be proud of myself. And thank you to all the forgiving people when I visit your country.
Tourist Stands In Front Of "You May Be Bitten" Sign. She Makes Sure The Sign Was Worth Putting Up
There are wonderful clips of this horse or its stablemates being very gentle and even affectionate with disabled people. They know.
Tourists are idiots. We were leaving an evening sports game early and they had horse mounted police (early aughts) to help keep the crowds under control because there wasn’t a lot of area cop cars could get to. They were really chill and talking to people leaving. I asked if it was ok to pet, I have pet a few horses and animals have always been drawn to me. So the officer said ok and reiterated how to stroke her nose, I did and after the second she turned her head slightly and nipped my forearm. I immediately stepped back and we all laughed. It didn’t hurt like go to the hospital but it was uncomfortable. So we wished the officer a good and safe night and walked away. I never approach any animal no matter how small without asking permission, even if it’s a wild animal😜
She's another one doing this on purpose and faking it, it's quite the trend at the moment
Actually, no. This was in video on here a while back. A bunch of tourists were taking pics with the horse, all right in a row. It started getting annoyed and gave little nips, until the people started running away. Then this lady comes up to the obviously aggravated horse and got full on bit. Her own damn fault
Load More Replies...The guardsman should have a thought bubble above his head: "you f***ed around, and you found out, lady'.

Traveling, as wonderful and eye-opening as it is, can sometimes come at a cost to local communities. That doesn’t mean we should stop exploring the world, but it’s a sad truth that some tourists are careless, ignoring rules, customs, and even the environment.
Take Iceland, for example, where concentrated tourism in certain areas is causing damage to its natural landscape. Or consider overcrowded cities like Venice and Dubrovnik. In April of last year, residents of the Canary Islands took to the streets with banners reading, “Tourist: respect my land!” as 13.9 million people visited the seven main islands in 2023 alone. This sentiment has been echoed in protests across other popular European destinations like Barcelona, Athens, and Málaga.
It's Sad That People Like This Still Exist
A Chinese man kicked a deer like a soccer ball, so I immediately started filming. They kept making excuses and the woman that was with him started acting like the victim and got angry, so I chased them out of Nara Park. What did you come to Japan to do? I really won't forgive anyone who abuses animals.
Looks like no one actually watched the video. He wasn't kicking the animal. He lifted its hoof with his foot, kind of a low five. Then this dude came quacking like a goose, shooting his heroic tik-tok material.
You can click on the user and watch the video. It doesn't happen the way it's described.
I think this is wildly exaggerated. This guy is just giving him a love tap. Ops trying to sound like the hero. Really, he just stood by and started filming instead of stopping it? And then he chased him out of the park. BS. As an animal lover myself, my first thought would not be to film it.
They were chinese, they like to go to japan and harass them. there was a guy who went there, p*ssed against a sign of a temple or something and then went back home where he was greeted like a hero.
Just so people know: the guy in the video did not kick the deer like a football, he more gently "shook hoof" with the deer, i'm not sure he hurt it or anything other than possibly annoying it... I have been to Nara and have seen both Japanese and tourists tormenting the deer more than this. However, the deer in Nara are considered sacred, as they are messengers to gods. So best to just admire them on their own terms and leave em be. (though some are more friendly than others and may approach you, especially if you have food)

To learn more about how we can be more responsible travelers, Bored Panda spoke with Pati, author of the blog One Way Ticket To Anywhere.
“I still remember how puzzled I was many years ago when I first saw travelers visiting Spain, a country rich in culture and cuisine, choosing to eat at pubs and lie by the pool at all-inclusive hotels,” Pati recalls. “Since then, I’ve visited many countries, and I’m still surprised by how tourists sometimes behave.”

Shame on you ! 20y ago we tripped to Germany, Bayern more precisely. First thing we visited was the Dachau camp. We did because we thought it was important as educated adults (furthermore my wife studied modern history). We went out ot the gas chamber crying, overwhelmed by the emotion. Than we met a group of american students, thinking they were travelling to Disneyland. I remember entering in Gunnery Sgt Hartman mode ...
I visited Dachau when I was a GI stationed in Germany during the mid-80s. The most sobering experience of my life. Unforgettable.

Tourists Have Started Putting "Love Locks" On Shoes On The Danube Bank, A Memorial In Budapest Of The Thousands Of People Who Were Executed On The Banks Of The Danube During WW2
I HATE THIS TREND! even on standard railings, will people please stop being trash!

Even if you don't get attacked, this desensitizes bears to contact with humans and then they start coming into town. If they come into town, there's a damn good chance they'll find food and learn to start doing it regularly. If we can't rehabilitate them to stay out, they get euthanized because they're f*****g bears and a threat. People who do this are getting animals killed!
Sometimes, advice on how to navigate local customs isn’t easy to find. It’s something that travel influencers or agencies rarely talk about. “This needs to change!” Pati insists. “But the issue is, as always, a bit more complex.”
“In today’s fast-paced world, travel is often seen as an escape—an escape from reality, from long working hours, far away from those who might judge our choices,” she continues. “This mindset can lead tourists to behave less respectfully. They feel they’ve earned this time off and want to do as they please.”

Yellowstone Tourist Files Complaint Over Lack Of Trained Grizzly Bears
They're just a few decades late. From the beginning of the park, they set up garbage areas where bears could go and scrounge through looking for food while the tourists could watch. After several decades of that, and the beggar bears that would sit along the roads begging for handouts, they finally realized that it wasn't really a good idea to get the bears to equate humans with food. But it wasn't until the 1970s that all bear feeding was forbidden.
My sister worked at the Prince of Wales hotel in Waterton, AB, Canada. She would get American and Chinese tourists coming up to complain all the time. "What time do you let the animals out?" "I want a refund for this bear bell! I wore it all week hiking and I didn't see a single bear!"
Maybe the bears were hung over and not answering the bell? Seriously, if they're that stupid, they should go to a zoo or a safari park.
Load More Replies...I would prefer not to encounter grizzlies when Ím in a park. I love wildlife. Life being the key word, theirs and mine!
I saw bears when I went to Yellowstone. I was pretty sure it was a candy bar, but when I went to Walmart I couldn't find any.
Pati believes we need to remember that, as travelers, we are guests. “There are no foreign countries. We are the foreigners taking advantage of the locals’ hospitality. It’s our responsibility to research our destination and respect local customs.”

Load More Replies...Ya'll, I swear, Asian countries get the worse kinds of tourists, it seems 😓
For many locals, the issue isn’t just about disrespectful behavior, but about the sheer volume of tourists and the lack of benefits to the community.
Sebastian Zenker, an expert in overtourism and academic director at Copenhagen Business School, explains, “If you look at the Canary Islands, I've read that a third of the population live on the edge of poverty. Tourism offers a big income to these islands—but for whom? It's not enough to say that we want to welcome well-behaved tourists who are quiet and spend more money, it's about where the money goes. At the moment, a large proportion of the population does not benefit.”
He suggests that if locals see a direct benefit, such as improved infrastructure or better living conditions, there could be a healthy coexistence between tourists and residents.
Tourists Climb Around 7-Foot-Tall Fences To Get The Perfect Selfie. This Was Taken In The Grampians National Park In Australia
Rangers had built 7-foot-tall fences with massive pictorial signs telling people to stick to the paths. These goons just went further back up the path and hiked through vegetation areas to get a selfie. These ledges are 50+ meters in the air, a decent slip, and it is lights out (it was drizzling rain too). Really grinds my gears, as once the problem becomes too big, the Rangers will just shut down the trail. They don't have the resources to properly enforce laws.
I mentioned earlier that stupidity can be fixed, but it's gonna hurt.
Oh I know this place, I've been on the lower ledge, but years ago when you were still allowed to, before the fences. A lot of spots in the Grampians had an at-your-own-risk policy until paths etc deteriorated and had to be fenced off, combined with recognition of First Nations sacred sites. Would never do it now for those reasons.
I saw this happening at the Grand Canyon this week. Some were scrambling down rocks to get to a more precarious site. Plus it messes up the view for everyone behind the safety/guard rails.
I hope they have to pay full costs,if they need to be rescued...Maybe I would even let pay them to use the path,to cover costs
Bush search and rescue is free, it's g'ment funded, and run by SES volunteers who also fund-raise, buuuuuut a medical extraction is costly, something like $5k /hr

Is it bad that I want them to fall so they don't infect more people with their stupidity?
Not sure stupidity can be fixed. Maybe if it falls off the cliff but otherwise... it just procreates.

Graffiti On The Bamboo In The "Bamboo Walking Path"
Such bamboo has to be cut and disposed of, and the bamboo is decreasing steadily. At this rate, we will lose the beautiful bamboo forests that people come to see from all over the world.

This is super prevalent around ancient Greece and Roman sites, unfortunately :( That's why in many cases people are no longer allowed to get close to the buildings/ruins anymore. You're kept to a set path or away by ropes, or even physically separated by glass. No more awesome pictures and experiencing history up close :( Also, many sites bring in rubble of similar materials & colors, and spread it around for unruly tourists to pick up as "souvenirs". They figured it's easier to provide them with fake "piece of Parthenon" than to stop then from taking stones away. So yeah, if you're one of those that keep a precious, free memento of your visit to Colosseum, I have a sad news to you - it's not ancient. It comes from a local demolition site or quarry.
If only the Coliseum still had lions these people could be thrown to.
Put a high bounty on these history thieves and locals, armed with photographic evidence, can earn a nice sideline guarding these sites.

Tourists Completely Disrespect The Place They Save All Year To Visit
Decided to visit a local beach where I live, and when I looked behind me I saw this. They were hanging out for over an hour right next to one of the numerous signs asking to stay off of the dunes. It’s not that hard.
Here they dig holes and tunnels. The dunes do not only protect us from storms, they actually protect us from being flooded 24/7, the land is 2 to 4 m below sea level. Some die when holes and tunnels collapse, the others are fined heavily, because endangering our protection is a crime.
I'd call them out, while filming them, and ask if they're illiterate or just stupid. Public shaming works wonders.
America builds on the dunes. Then they wonder why the house collapsed in a storm.
Tourist Showing Off His Gymnastics Skills In A Japanese Subway
This is japan, with a massive culture revolving around being nice in the metro
Why do people have the urge to this on any kind of public transportation in ANY country anyway?
He's a d**k, but I'm surprised that the handle are strong enough. I've seen people do this stuff before (usually London Underground) and I wonder how strong those handles have to be.
I went on the Japanese metro before and could tell from other tourists they will hate you silently forever
“I often say there’s a difference between traveling and ‘touristing’,” Pati adds. “Staying at the resort, lying by the pool, and eating at the hotel buffet—that’s ‘touristing.’ Getting out, learning about the local culture, meeting people, using local transport, and respecting customs—that’s travel. And I hope everyone gets to experience it.”
Tourist In Yellowstone National Park Ignores Warnings From Several People That She Was Too Close To A Mother Grizzly Bear
Did she get eaten? I don't see her in the last picture, and the bear is looking over her shoulder as if she's just taken the trash out.
I spent much of my later childhood and early adult years around Yellowstone. You could write an entire book on the idiocy of tourists visiting the park. I've seen people trying to put children on top of bison; people heading for a "warm bath" in the thermals; throwing rocks and other items toward bears to get their attention; confronting elk during rutting season; trying to capture young moose, young fox and young whatever. Too many idiots think Yellowstone is a Disney park and the wildlife are robotic.
Bear should have taken her apart, AND left alone for doing it. There needs to be more chlorine in the gene pool.
Playing devil's advocate here....what about the wall she was behind? No excuse to not be actively 'bear aware' when you're in their home, but she probably assumed she was being respectful and safe behind the man made wall in the (possible) parking lot? Lots of gleefully hateful comments in this post so far.
Yeah I noticed the hateful comments too. It baffles me how violent people can get. Like it's normal to talk that way about killing people. It's not normal to disrespect culture and do the things these people are doing either. But my goodness I've never seen such hate come out of so many people in my life. It's sickening and scary to be honest.

Yellowstone Tourists Put Bison Calf In Their Car, Because They’re Worried It’s Cold
Had to be euthanized as calf's family rejected it when park officials tried to reintroduce back after rescuing it. The calf had become a danger to itself as it kept walking up to people, also without the defense of family group. People need to stop being careless, unthinking twit twats
I’m probably going to get downvoted for this, but that’s a b******t excuse to euthanize the calf. Park staff could have sent the calf to a wildlife sanctuary or rescue center instead. The calf would most likely spend the rest of their life in captivity, but it’s a helluva lot better than being killed because of the stupidity of others.

(a) a bison mother will not typically reject her calf; (b) a calf superated from its mother may not be able to locate her mother or vice versa, which will likely lead to death; (c) rangers do not likely euthanize an animal as a first course of action, rangers tend to be nature lovers lest we forget; and (d) if wild animals (like bison, bear, etc.) become comfortable around humans by repeated exposure, bad things can happen to both but the animal is the only one that will be euthanized...in this case: https://abcnews.go.com/US/yellowstone-euthanize-bison-calf-visitor-put-car/story?id=39194412

There Is A Certain Pretentious Group Of People That Treat Thailand Badly. They Look Down Upon Thai People, Treat Them With Utter Disrespect And Are Just Generally Rude And Entitled
Tonight I witnessed it firsthand when at a restaurant near a beach, these people felt they could just throw rubbish and spit on the floor right next to their table in front of other customers and staff. I asked the young waitress what she thought of it, she said it happens every night and they never ask for a bin or ashtray. They never apologize or tip. They have zero manners or consideration for others. I know there are a few "types" of people that come to mind after you read this, but I bet the real one is at the top of your list. Not exclusively always the case. One of my college housemates had comfortably off parents. Dad was something significant on the council, expensive cars, cleaner at home. All that so they can show off incredible pictures of their one year long South-east Asia journey on their IG/travel blog. When I applied to get a visa for the USA, my appointment date was 9 months away. We applied as a family and had to show proof of property and what not. A week before our date, my dad unexpectedly passed away and we thought of cancelling but our agent advised us to make it because the next available appointment could be 1 year away. Load More Replies...Some Americans have become totally entitled, & thereby, embarrass themselves enormously. HOWEVER, they're SO entitled, they don't have a clue that they are entitled. Sort of the Dunning-Krueger Effect in entitlement!!
I would have noted this person’s birthday by draping the hotel lobby in black.
I Just Returned From A Business Trip To Rio De Janeiro. I Was Blown Away By The Pollution I Found Just Outside Of The Tourist Areas
we've got a show here called 7vswild where people spend a week or two alone in a wild location and there's soooo much trash

Some Tourists Can Be Very Disrespectful
They've got plenty of skeletons in their collective closet. People are super impressed with the cleanliness and order. Let's talk about the racism, the history they won't embrace, the shame culture, toxic work culture...

I mean let's be real here... No helmet and transporting almost everything on motorbike is very common in Indonesia and has nothing to do with tourism...
she wasn't driving...and, this is the way in SEA...i have seen whole families with groceries on a motorbike while there
Gold Star To These Geniuses. They Were So Thoughtful To Put Their Cup, Straw, Lid, Napkins, And Plastic Utensils Inside Their Jack In The Box Meal Box And Place Driftwood On Top
What Makes This Person Think We Want To Finance Their Travel Plans?
This Was At The Cafe In Machu Pichu. These Two Bought No Food Or Drink But Took The Prime Viewing Spot And Put Their Bags Down On A Third Chair In Between Them, So No One Could Sit There
There was plenty of room on the floor for their bags.
Is it possible there was a third person buying the food and drink and they just went to get seats and wait?
A simple request would alleviate this situation. Again, some of these are stupid.
Have you ever simply requested someone move and had them say no? Because I have.

I don’t even really like the restaurant that they are reviewing that much. The food is fine and I’ll go there in the off-season once in a while, it’s just kind of a tourist trap and very busy. But it's obviously the restaurant's fault for the storm and power outage with no generator, according to this person.
Even in a home fridge, the food stays good for a couple of hours and more than 24hrs in the freezer if the doors are kept closed. The numbers for industrial units are larger of course. But the important thing is not to let the cold air escape
Can confirm. I have a generator at home and when we lost power from a tornado, it was 8 hours until we decided we might not get power back until the morning and should start it up (and of course as soon as we hooked it up power came back on lol). Commercial walk in coolers and freezers are significantly cooler than my refrigerator.

Doesn't belong here, it's not an "ignorant tourist" issue at all, just a c**p driver.
C**p driver? I couldn't do that in a million years!

Went To Iceland Earlier In The Month And Waited Nearly 10 Minutes For The Geysir To Blow, Only For Another Tourist To Walk Right In Front Of The Shot
Maybe the OP is in the wrong here. People are allowed to walk where they want, and the person in this picture is clearly within their rights as they are behind the rope barrier. Just because OP has a camera doesn't mean they're entitled to block the whole area for a photo.
I just went back and looked at how "long" the OP waited - only 10 minutes! Jeez.
Load More Replies...No one gives a f**k about you "waiting for a shot." F**k tourists. You get what you get and if you expect special treatment in order to get a picture for social media, too damn bad. The world has had more than enough of you selfish douchebags. I live in Montreal an y'all can go straight to hell! The majority of you ruin everything for locals
My girlfriend at the time, took me to a gourmet restaurant in a hotel in Switzerland one summer during our holiday. The hotel was full of Japanese and the staff were fed of how rude, impolite, bad mannered they were. Basically, they put us in a private dining area with a gorgeous view of the mountains because of the carnage in the main dining area caused by the Japanese. We had a lovely meal, the staff couldn't do enough for us even the owners came and spoke to us.
It's infuriating that people are so disrespectful and stupid for doing such things...I really hate people (not all people but most of them)...I usually go in holiday to my country and you don't imagine how many times I heard that the natives have a bad English or they don't speak enough English( specially in the small villages).
In situations like these i am glad I got no problem doing something about the situation, even if i should get fined or whatever.. If i see someone tagging a historical site, you better belive i will forcefully apprehended the individual until authorities arrive.
