Whether you’re a science geek in the best sense of the word or someone who’s had enough of it back at school, you ought to agree that these science-based memes are pretty funny. Probably that’s why the ‘Science Meme’ Facebook page, created roughly a decade ago, has already amassed more than 1.3 million followers.
It will come as no surprise, but people enjoy funny content. That’s why you might recall an anecdote faster than a scientific fact. But the two can actually go hand in hand, sometimes even helping students learn about science and the world we live in.
Research on the educational power of humor on student engagement in online learning environments found that humor can increase students’ engagement in the process of learning.
“The positive effects of humorous elements for behavioral engagement in the discussion help to maintain active participation and tracking of discussion topics,” the study read in part. “In practical assignments, the humorous element has a positive effect on the indicators of behavioral engagement, including the time spent and number of assignment attempts.”
Dr. Ronald A. Berk, Professor Emeritus of Biostatistics and Measurement at Johns Hopkins University, seconds the idea that humor can be used to help students learn easier; and, of course, make the process more fun!
Berk, a professor of a rather intimidating subject, was cited by the American Psychological Association (APA), saying that humor helps relieve fear and reduce anxiety. "When I enter the classroom, I want to change the entire atmosphere into one where everyone has fun with the material—even if the material is complex," he said.
But, according to the professor, it’s important not to overdo it, too, as comedy should complement the course material and not distract students from it.
Humor when learning can be used in all sorts of ways. According to APA, in one of professor Berk’s classes, for instance, he had two groups of students enter the classroom, the first group doing so accompanied by the song “All That Jazz” and the second group later to the beats of the theme music from “Rocky”.
The first group of students wearing white gloves and the second one throwing punches with hooded sweatshirts were used by the professor to explain the concept of statistical sampling designs. It’s safe to say that whether or not they passed their exams, the students remembered statistical sampling and that particular lesson for a long time.
Well, it's technically not yet entirely correct as a theory. It still has multiple flaws when it comes to certain aspects of quantum mechanics.
Talent. Good use of your time. But the biggest feat is to have been able to refrain from eating them all.
Unsurprisingly, funny memes can also help students learn and retain information. A study on enhancing the student learning experience through memes found that both creating and using memes can improve the perception of knowledge retention. According to it, the majority of students considered meme-making to be “both fun and relevant while helping them remember and reflect on class content”.
As a South African, i would love to hear the discussion actually.. LOL
Whether it’s studying or leisure that drives you to the warm embrace of memes, you’re in luck, as we have quite a few of them in store for you here at Bored Panda. If you’d like to continue browsing them, make yourself comfortable and open up our category dedicated entirely to memes for more similar, but not necessarily science-focused, content. Have fun!
The one on the left looks like Homer Simpson and Pennywise made a baby!!
What about non polar covalent? those ones are friends because they share
Not to mention how many times they would have made corrections for a rewrite...there are always corrections.
erm, it's a non-zero net force. So if you put force on a girl that's greater than another force acting on her, it's a non-net force. But if you put force on a girl you are with, you lose her. But no. If you act a force on a girl either way they're gonna act and punch you in the face which is an equal and opposite reaction.
I always wondered why peacocks (male) are so colorful and peahens (female) aren't. I think it's because the guys just HAVE to show off. The girls don't really give a c**p. Watch them sometime. 😆
My friend Steven put a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room and turned them both up to 11
To tell the difference leave and then check whether you see it later or after awhile.
Me, who knows he's the Greek ruler of the Underworld. Edit: Pluto was the ROMAN god of the Underworld (always get Greek/Roman mixed up). No trophy for me.
i think twice a month, but apparently the adverb could be both?
If you can explain it in layman's terms, I love to hear about it. Talk using words only those in your field might use (but probably don't), I'm liable to fall asleep 😴
As someone who teaches in higher education, I absolutely hate seeing this kind of thing. It just tells me the person running that session either has no sense of how much time it takes to teach something, will try to cram *way* too much info into the allotted time, or run out of time and spend two frantic minutes whizzing through 50 slides. Or all of the above.
Yeah, as a zoologist, can confirm that's not how things work.
"Fred is a surgeon?....cool cool cool cool cool....hope I never need surgery"
No, spherical and in a vacuum! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherical_cow
Wikipedia is Not a reliable source. Back in college, a friend's professor assigned a report on the North American Tree Mollusk. If you just went to wikipedia, you would find a full detailed page on it. It would have all the information you needed, including pictures and sources. Except it was all fake. If you did any real research, you'd find that out. But if you just went to wikipedia, you'd see only the false information. Anyone who turned in a report that was more than just "this thing is fake" failed the assignment, but hopefully learned the importance of doing proper research.
. . . Just before the dog eats the homework, the teacher needs to see if kid actually did the homework
Hell no. I think the extraordinary pain that goes with it would put you off... From Wikipedia-Aside from causing intense pain, the venom of the spider can also cause priapism in humans. Erections resulting from the bite are uncomfortable, can last for many hours and can lead to impotence. A component of the venom, (Tx2-6), is being studied for use in erectile dysfunction treatments.[20][3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoneutria_nigriventer
Not good enough. He should have used a t-test to establish whether the differences between tenants is statistically signfiicant
We should all be imagining cats every chance, in every situation we can.
Ah, the ant death spiral. Apparently army ants, which are practically blind, rely on a pheromonal system with which they mark their paths and follow each other. If a group of them get separated somehow and lose the track, they start following each other in a circle, until they either find another track, or, commonly, die of exhaustion. Bit like my thoughts at night 😅
I was gone the day in 8th grade we dissected frogs I was really sad Edit: grammar
This was me in year one math with the guy teaching from slides....like...okay I'm definitely failing this.
Sometimes you don't know how you got it right, you just did! It should count.
Me if I were a snake but more on anxiety rather than sleep lol
It starts with math, applied math, applied applied math,... Come on.
Guess what happens when you get a full time job. Hint: It's the same thing but it lasts 40 years.
There's "math" in that sentence, that heart, and tiktok, the phone he's using, and literally everything in this universe. (:
I went down so many rabbit holes with this one, but the language is Vietnamese, and uwu epitomises cuteness, and uranium is an isotope used for a nuclear bomb, and I'm still too thick to understand it!!
These other b******t courses is what makes you an accomplished [whatever your degree is]. Understanding that your field is connected with others is essential. This is why civil engineers start two years together to get to understand all basics connected with "civiling", before splitting up in structural/railroad/water engineering
I know they want subscribers but this website is so unstable it freezes and constantly reloads on me. I’m not paying for that, and locking content behind the premium isn’t making me any more likely to.
And people reply to a comment you made earlier that you now can't read as it's since become locked behind the pay wall...
Load More Replies...This Bored Panda Premium thing has gone too far! Missing content now. I thought the Amazon ads would cover costs when introduced.
Nah, the ads are just to mess with the site so we’ll get premium with no ads, and the site will run smoothly again for us. Yeah… fúck that.
