50 Times Designers Deserved A Raise For Their Genius Ideas (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertGood, well-thought-out craftsmanship tends to click intuitively—typically, you instantly know whether a thing has been designed well. You look at it, you use it, and you can tell if it feels natural or if something’s off, even if you can’t put your finger on exactly why. Though the world is full of blunders and misfires, there are also lots of brilliant examples of products, furniture, graphics, and packages.
Quality things garner huge online follower counts. Case in point, this online community, which counts its members in the millions, wows the internet by sharing really cool designs. We’ve collected some of their freshest featured posts to show you what’s possible when you think outside the box. Scroll down and don’t forget to upvote the pics that impressed you the most. We have our favorites. Which ones are yours?
Bored Panda reached out to Matt Johnson, PhD, to learn about the importance of product aesthetics, as well as getting the intended message across better through graphics and packaging. He was kind enough to answer our questions, and you'll find our interview with him below. Johnson is a marketing psychology expert specializing in topics such as consumer psychology and serendipity.

Clever Design I Just Saw For An Abortion Campaign
Once wrote an essay against abortion, but then I studied too much. When I had to chose between serious heath issues and a low birth chance, I was glad I could make the choice. Whatever that choice was, I have never regretted it...because I got to make it.
Or you know, maybe act like an adult and use protection.
Load More Replies...Absolutely! Politicians need to stay out of our bodies!
It’s not a crime in a lot of states in the U.S. (like Illinois, where I live). But the fact that some states punish women and are trying to punish doctors who treat women from a backwards state is truly frightening. Not to mention that the ban (effectively) has led to there being (oftentimes) no Planned Parenthoods in those states. Planned Parenthood does pre-natal care and medical exams. So these women are being forced to carry pregnancies they don’t want and have little to no access to care for their forced pregnancies. If these idiots cared about the health of the fetus, they wouldn’t shutter the only places to help these mostly rural and/or lower income women. It’s disgusting.
Load More Replies...Clever imagery! I'll probably get banned again for having an opinion but that's ok. I gave a child up for adoption. I've miscarried wanted twins. I've raised two kids to adulthood. Our bodies are our own to make medical decisions about. Or should be. And it's none of anyone else's business but yours and your doctor's. One of my coworkers is pregnant at 48 and the baby is attached to her fallopian tube. The doctor is telling her to wait out the miscarriage because he's legally afraid to intervene. She ordered an abortion pill online from a different state and is terrified to take it. If the baby grows more she could literally die from the rupture. Is this what the right to lifers want?! Even with birth control and condoms accidents happen. There are not only medical reasons for intervention but quality of life considerations. Until I see these protesters and senators picking up unwanted babies to take home to raise I'll stay firmly pro choice.
it also has another meaning imo. Forced pregnancy is prison for the woman

A Wonderful Package Of Japanese Mitorakaruna Cookies
Johnson noted that product aesthetics play a "surprisingly significant role" in consumer behavior. They often influence decisions in ways that people don't consciously realize.
"Our brains are wired to respond to beauty—when a product is visually appealing, it activates reward centers, creating a positive emotional response. This initial impression can set the tone for how we evaluate the product’s functionality, quality, or even value. Importantly, aesthetics can also build trust; a well-designed product suggests care and attention to detail, which we subconsciously associate with reliability," the marketing psychology expert told Bored Panda in an email.
"However, the effect of aesthetics goes beyond attraction—it also plays into self-expression. People often choose products that align with their personal style or identity, making aesthetics a critical driver in everything from impulse buys to brand loyalty. In essence, aesthetics aren’t just about looking good; they tap into deep psychological needs, shaping how we connect with what we buy."
Damn.... How Creative
Don't know if this is the same brand we buy (ours are the Patchwork Pet 'prickles' toys), but our dogs LOVE these things! An older woman working at a small pet store recommended them to us after we mentioned we had two APBTs (i.e. pitties)... she said they had passed the "durability" test of another employee's pittie... and, damn, was she sure right. These are the only "soft" toys that have ever made it past 5 minutes with my pups. Two to three days and both the cloth layers are gone... but the prickle-ball still remains!
Thank you!!! Mine is walking around all depressed because he shredded ALL of his 30 Christmas toys already

Load More Replies...That's awesome. it's sometimes a tragedy to buy a soft toy and your dog is a destroyer. My dog is fine with it when I'm around but kills them when I leave her alone with it. Load More Replies...Bored Panda also wanted to get to grips with how designers who work with graphics and packaging can get their message across better. The important thing here, according to Johnson, is to focus on the essentials.
"Graphic and packaging design is all about creating an immediate connection with the consumer, and the brain plays a big role in how these designs are perceived. Simplicity and clarity are key—our brains are wired to process visual information quickly, so designs that are clean and focused tend to be more effective," he said.
"Color psychology is another powerful tool; specific colors can evoke emotions and associations that align with the product’s message. For instance, green often signals health or sustainability, while red conveys urgency or excitement. It's worth noting that while some of these associations appear to be universal, others are culturally contingent. It's important, therefore, for the designer to carefully consider the audience when making these color and design choices," Johnson explained the importance of cultural context.
"Additionally, leveraging visual hierarchy—using size, contrast, and placement to guide attention—helps ensure the most important elements stand out. Designers should also consider how the design feels emotionally; tactile elements, like embossing or texture, can create a memorable sensory experience. Ultimately, the best designs balance functionality with an emotional hook, making the product both intuitive and irresistible."
Salvation Army Advert For Spotting Signs Of Domestic Abuse
Please remember not all domestic abuse is physical. Emotional, mental, verbal, financial, sexual abuse all coexist. I was only assaulted twice physically by my ex. He isolated me to a remote area and I believe if I hadn't gotten out when I did, I would have been murdered in time. We were together for over 20 years and I'm still fighting for my children.
So sorry for what you went through and are still going through. I suffered some physical abuse but lots of verbal & emotional abuse from my ex-husband. We had no children, so at least now we're divorced I'm free of him.

Railing With Braille On It To Describe The View
What if you have never seen the ocean or houses or clouds how can you imagine what you see here.
According to a blind friend red is hot; blue is cold; green is cut grass; orange is fruity. In his words "You get the picture?" (Blind people have a sense of humour too!)
Load More Replies..."Oh it's a lovely view. It's really beautiful! You'd love it, too bad you can't see it."
Do you actually KNOW anybody who is blind? If not go out and educate yourself!
Load More Replies...This look like a very sunny place. I don't think I would want to touch that in summer.
It's Naples. I guess it wouldn't be much fun to touch in high summer - but then again the rails are legible even in the middle of the night, when people around likely wouldn't enjoy the view as much as a blind person might enjoy the poetic description. Or in clouded weather. 🤷
Load More Replies...If there was a yacht and a large sea-going mammal in view, they'd need to put a sail and a whale with a tail on the Braille-rail. (I know the yacht and the whale would move on, let me have my fun!)

Wow what a cool idea! I wonder if they are super smart or like me and thinking of a good idea then be like "I hope this works I hope this works please work please work you are crazy this will never work you are ruined now YES YES YES IT WORKS!"
Technologies and aesthetics change, consumer preferences and cultural attitudes shift, but no matter how much time passes, some design philosophies continue to stand the test of time.
For example, German industrial designer Dieter Rams, who has had a profound impact on the world of design, is still relevant with his ideas and approaches today. Some ideas are simply fundamental.
Designer Rams came up with his 10 principles of good design which are sometimes known as the 10 commandments of design. Rams saw truly good design as innovative, making a product useful and understandable, aesthetic, unobtrusive, honest, long-lasting, environmentally friendly, and thorough down to the last detail.
And, lastly, good design should—paradoxically—involve as little design as possible.

Load More Replies...That last bit—about how designers should design less—is essential. At the core of ideas that balance function and form, you’ll often find simplicity.
There’s a high level of self-editing and refinement involved where you let go of what is, basically, clutter. Of course, there’s no arguing about taste, but over-designed products can either end up looking like works of art that barely function, or they have so many functions it’s unclear what they even do. Less really is more. And from a creative perspective, it takes a lot of courage and discipline to throw out the fluff.

Ad Placement On A Subway
Ironically the bible thumpers are usually the most intolerant hateful people.
TBH, if you think about it, it almost seems like Satan has already infiltrated organized religion. Just study the words and actions of the most sanctimonious of your religious coworkers, friends, and relatives. They’re not acting according to the Bible, the Qur’an, the teachings of Buddha, or any of the other world religions they may follow. They’re simply following what they’re hearing from very evil people who have managed to fool them into thinking they’re preaching the true word, when they’re actually brainwashing them into following the path of evil and not good. I wish more people could see that, stand up against it, and oust those infiltrators. But they’re so certain they’re going to get into heaven (if it exists—-I forgot to mention I’m an atheist who takes way more comfort in science than mysticism) if they follow their religion without questioning the motives of those put in charge of it. Apparently none of them have really studied their faiths, and if they have then they must not have been A students, because the real meaning underneath the surface stuff obviously did not sink in.
Many people just say they are part of the religion, and then do whatever they want
Load More Replies...But Satan is portrayed as pretty cool in the Bible. He wants to give you knowledge and pranks Jesus.

Another option is to donate yourself to a cadaver farm, so forensics students can learn about different stages of decomposition in different circumstances. Your donation might lead to a future criminal being successfully sentenced because of what was learned from studying your remains.

The subreddit’s name, which we can’t directly mention here, is an artifact from the days when the internet was a very different place: naming conventions were laxer, users were more at ease with sarcasm and irony, others enjoyed being super edgy and maybe took themselves a little bit less seriously, and everyone was less worried about being censored on the internet.
Now, things are far more strict online, leaving less room for jokes and weirdly-titled groups. The silver lining? No matter what a group is called, the proof is in the pudding: quality content is quality content.

Like a champagne cork specifically. The cage prevents it from flying off prematurely!
I would love to have this. My flat already has multiple bar stools, but they lack personality. Not ugly, just also not very interesting. I would pay good money for one of these.
Load More Replies...If you've never opened champagne and are afraid it's hard or scary, here's a tip: Don't try to twist the cork out of the bottle. Instead, place one hand firmly on the cork, (you can use a small towel if you like) grasp the bottle at the base of the neck then twist and pull the downward at the same time. So you hold the cork and turn the bottle instead of the other way around. Counter-intuitive but it works easily. And you'll get a good sound every time.
I do the standard cork thing, but slowly. I’ve never had a woopsie doodle. Edit: I don’t twist it, just work it upwards. And now this sounds pornographic.

Les Arènes De Picasso Is A Contemporary Residential Building In Noisy-Le-Grand, France
I don't know if it's noisy or not, but It's pronounced "nu-ah-zy" :)
Looks like they aren’t incorporating the rounded edges into the end apartments. At least I hope they aren’t, nd have squared off the rooms. I live near Ocean City, MD. There’s a condo building there called The Pyramid. Cool concept, cool look, but if you are ever in one of the edge or top condos, the architects didn’t square off the rooms, they just left the angles in them. There are rooms that have slanted walls, and missing or wasted space because nothing will fit in such tight angles—-you can’t even hang pictures to fill the blank wall space. I can’t imagine trying to keep floors and carpets clean on the edges, as many are too tight for a broom, mop, or vacuum to fit. So beware of the interiors of buildings with cool designs like this, as they may not be squared off, and may have wasted space, or lost space, in the oddball areas in them that you really can’t do anything with.

It took me a couple of seconds to realize that was a pizza cutter. I was just seeing the left side of the box and wondering why it was on there.

Cover Art
I'm a meteorologist and the baby boomers I work with are going crazy over the cover art for this climate report. The report documents that 2023 is the hottest year ever recorded. Temperature is often displayed in circular graphs, but does anyone under age 30 know what a record player is? What do you think: good design or not?
Seriously. My 17 year old nephew got one for Christmas. Everything old is new again, and vinyl has been popular again for a long time, if it ever really went away.
Load More Replies...A record has a single track .... it spirals inwards. This is a series of circles. FAIL! (Ok, I like the design even though it is technically wrong)
These Sliding Door Handles (Tilted Top = Unlocked, Straight = Locked)
I am not sure I like this design. A straight handle seems to me to say: Go right in.
I think they ought to be reversed. Straight handle - open, angled handle - occupied.

I was legit fascinated with this cover when it was new and fresh. I sorta still am.
Seen that cover a few times in my 50 + years and never noticed what the city-scape really was. Mind most definitely blown.
Same here, I'm 56 and just noticed it for the first time !

Yea it's a little too subtle. For a phone screen. Am now realizing this poster would have been seen on a wall from at least a few feet away, and would've been great.

But they're its top teeth, right? So aren't they upside down? Or maybe I'm just not seeing it right.

Minimalistic Product Labels
UK used to have a store called Quick Save (or maybe Kwik save) that did plain white labels with black writing. Everything was very cheap and basic.
When I was a kid there was a 'brand' name called "Basic" that was the same cheap and basic stuff in black and white packaging but it was available in many stores.

Thank you! I was trying to remember which shop it was that had this!
Load More Replies...No Name brand was introduced in 1978; Repo Man was 1984. So Canada had this labelling style first.

It usually says to get premium to see the rest, but yeah, it sucks. And if someone comments on a comment youve posted, if the post is hidden under the paywall you can’t even access your own content or respond.
