‘That’s It, I’m Architecture Shaming’: 40 Architecture Examples That Look So Bad, People Just Had To Shame Them
Some buildings will absolutely fascinate you with their stunning designs, genius architectural decisions, and the sheer power of their aesthetics. This article isn’t about these kinds of buildings, however. Nope! Not all buildings are made equal, you see, and the ‘bad’ ones need to be shamed publicly so that others don’t copy their designs. So we’ll be focusing exclusively on just plain terrible architectural decisions.
And the worst of the worst end up on the ‘That’s It, I’m Architecture Shaming’ Facebook group where users mercilessly prod and poke bad design. It’s fun, it’s educational, it’s something cool to scroll through during your next coffee break.
Remember to upvote your fave photos that you love to hate and be sure to follow the architecture-shaming Facebook group if you like their stuff. They’re a growing community with awesome content.
Bored Panda spoke about what separates good and bad design, the need to democratize the access to quirky private property designs, as well as about the roles that architecture plays with an expert in the field from Sweden who has a background in urban planning. You’ll find our full interview with her below.

That's probably a plastic utilities chase. A building of that size would not be structurally supported by steel columns like that.

The Sweden-based urban planning expert explained to Bored Panda that while public spaces must meet safety and accessibility standards, aesthetic standards can be much more fluid for buildings. The expert spoke to Bored Panda on the condition that she remain anonymous. (Remember, just because you're an expert in something and want to be helpful doesn't mean that you always like the limelight... unlike quirky architecture which just begs you to look at it!)
“Most of the time, the elements of the built environment should be in harmony amidst each other and with the surroundings. However, sometimes, something bolder and out-of-the-box might form an engaging contrast,” she said. However, the urban planning expert shared with Bored Panda that, in her personal opinion, our built environments have to engage us, as well as stimulate our minds and senses. In fact, she believes that architecture’s ability to make us think is one of its most powerful aspects.

The name of the building is “The Crooked House.” It’s located in Sopot, Poland, and is a local attraction. The architect was inspired by abstract painting. I’m not sure if it’s just ugly, or also interesting, I guess it has its moments.

“There are circumstances where the architecture should create a sense of calmness and safety, yet there are instances in which it is not bad if the architecture provokes us and makes us think, ‘Why don't I like the look of this building?’”
The urban planner said that we should give people the freedom to express themselves as they wish when it comes to designing their private property. As long as they have the means, nearly everything is allowed, in her opinion.

“Quirky architecture comes from our innate desire to demonstrate our uniqueness. However, not everyone who has the means has an average taste for aesthetics. Yet, as long as it is for the people who inhabit or use their private space, I mean why not?” she told Bored Panda that as long as you’re not actively harming anyone else with how bad your designs are, you should be able to be as unique as you want. Even if it falls short of objective aesthetic standards.

However, the expert acknowledged that others in the industry might not see things the way that she does. Others, she said, believe that private property must be in harmony with the surroundings.
“But, I think that we should not cross that thin line where architecture becomes reserved for only the wealthy and for those with ‘good taste’ (whoever decides that). I’m only talking about private property here, though. When it comes to public space, there should be a consensus between the public and the professional about the design,” she said that the rules for the private and public spheres are very different.

I don't hate it, but all that grass could be converted to a vegetable garden.
Thats the most ecological choice here because it's probably marram grass, they fixes the dunes and their seeds have a very short life so the building can help to fix the dunes by sending some seeds around. And they are adapted to aridity, can have 5 meters long roots (who fix dunes). In my place they are highly protected, that's forbidden to hurt them, break them or remove them.

The urban planning expert also had some advice when it comes to design. “Firstly, even though I often advocate for unconventionally looking buildings, I do not encourage purposefully provocative architecture. The building should be designed with the intention to accommodate and protect society. It should create a sense of safety but not be boring,” she told Bored Panda that we ought to strike a balance between uniqueness and service, expression and community.

What’s more, the expert from Sweden pointed out that accessibility, inclusiveness, and empowerment should also be key features of any architectural project. “Also, I prefer somewhat complex but systemic designs. Minimalistic and box like floor plans are good in some cases where easy access is necessary (for example, hospitals) yet they can be completely mind-numbing while more complex floor plan designs are more mind-stimulating (for example, good for schools, in my opinion).”

It would have been nice to just have it open plan instead of that weird floating fireplace.
My guess is that it is a load bearing wall, so couldn't be removed, and this is how they chose to "open" it up..?
Seems likely, though it is a terrible design for opening it up. They could've had one long counter at a workable height, at least. I frequently find myself annoyed at how designers chop up kitchens. Maybe it creates visual interest for them, but when I see a large kitchen that doesn't have a contiguous work space wider than 1m, I really wonder if they actually cook. They'll take a nice, large 2m island and plunk a sink or a stove smack in the middle of it.

Here’s A Building In Pittsburgh. They Tore Down The Church But Left The Steeple. Built An Insensitive Building Behind It
This happened in my city years ago. An underground shopping mall was built underneath a Catholic church. The church had to be physically moved back several hundred feet to accommodate the mall's front entrances. The church was resistant to the initial offers to purchase their land. But, some firm pitched them the right offer. Money speaks louder than God, apparently.
Sometimes, you have no choice. Why keep wasting money for a building which the churchgoers do not even need anymore ? Wouldn't the orphans, poor and so on need this money more? There are some specific formalities to properly turn a church back into a "regular" building which can be used for non-sacred purposes.
Load More Replies...At least, they kept the bell tower... Unfortunately, many churches are being totally destroyed.
Sacrilege. The steeple is nice, so why attach some pink glass modern pile of s**t to it instead of refurbishing the original church, even if it was deconsecrated and you were going to repurpose it for offices?
Look at Université du Québec à Montréal on Google images. Well done and the church is used as a screen for projections. I think preserving and integrating what can be is really cool.

Originally used to protect guests and owners from the elements when their horse-drawn carriages or later, their horseless carriages (early automobiles w/o roofs) arrived. Very practical!!
Load More Replies...All I see when I look at that house, is that it seems very hungry. I wonder if that neighborhood has a missing pets problem...
I actually like it! Unique, whimsical, anti-weather; what's not to love? The color is really nice too.
Me, too. You could easily see the view of the water, which is really nice.

I believe the coachman would’ve lived upstairs. The opening is the porte cochere that would’ve led to the stables. In the automobile era, the coachman would’ve become the chauffeur, and the stables converted to a garage, which would’ve still been accessed by going through the same porte cochere. If you see one of these attached to a house, it serves as a kind of carport by the door, and would’ve kept the homeowners and their guests protected from the elements when they drove up to the house. They would hand their keys to the butler, who would call the chauffeur to park their cars for them in the garage.
Now it’s a great way to not have to clear snow off your car or get soaked bringing in groceries in a downpour!

It looks like whoever had it built wanted a wide veiw of the water when they pulled in maybe?

My parent's house looks like this - this was a fairly common design in the late 80's. We and others in their town, call it the "Pizza Hut House."
This Building Has Been In My Hometown For Ages, But I Never Noticed It Until I Joined This Group
The architect clearly got their inspiration from The Sims' automatic roofs.
I Never Realized How Important It Is For The Roof To Hang Over A Little Bit
You calling them faux just because there's a rainpipe running over one?!
Load More Replies...oh gods is this where i think it is. bc if it is, i'm shocked it hasnt fallen over from the amount of accumulated snow on that flat roof.
This reminds me of an ugly red brick building located in Bethesda, MD. It startled me the first time I saw it because it was so ugly. This is not a joke...it's wasn't a year later when a disgruntled employee went in and killed about seven of his co-workers.
I lived in an old student apartment that was like this. Very odd experience.
I've noticed that a lot of American houses seem to have really unusual window placements. Right up against the roof line, directly on a corner or just absolutely random - it makes them look so awkward.
House I Found While Browsing Properties In Melbourne, Australia
I'm not sure what's wrong. Maybe something with me? I like it.
Feels like when you look at something meant to be seen in VR goggles, but you don’t have any
Oh, I Live In A Gated Community. It’s Very Posh
A gated community so into their gatedness, they even have faux gates attached to parts of the house where a gate isn’t even necessary. You know, to drive the point home. I guess.
Never saw it either but i grew up in an old house with a "fausse fenêtre" (like the second one on the second floor), this was a thing in 19th century. There were taxes on the number of windows so to avoid taxes and respect the look of a house they add frames but not windows. My mother took a pic of my brother and i at another window and made it paint realistic, to put it in the frame and one of my cousin tried to talk to us from the garden, the painter nailed it (i had a ninja turtle sweater he painted them)! But i'm not aware of any "balcony taxes". fausse-fen...b3a004.jpg
I thought it was a babygate. To stop, you know, babies falling through that wall.

Yep! There is 'wealth' and there is 'rich'...this place is rich for sure. (Chris Rock has a section on one of his CDs that talks about that).
Load More Replies...I just can't understand McMansions...If you have the uber $$ to build a beautiful house WHY DON'T YOU PUT IT ON SOME LAND. Perhaps this one does have enough room for horses and can't see the entire property. Even on my little ranch we have acreage...not a fancy house or barn, but they work just fine!
Neighbors Had Some Material Left, Contractor Cut Them A Deal On A Monstrosity
It's nicely done, and has nothing to do with the slab monstrosity to the right.
Load More Replies...A deal is a deal. If they said if we use some of this material in the backs you'll save enough for marble counters and an extra bathroom, hell yeah!
Not to mention a close-out sale on pink paint (is that the house that this eyesore is an addition to, or is it the house on the next block that backs up to the eyesore?).
I Mean, Come On
Or something much, much worse than that.

This. The Building I Hate Most In Dallas And I Have To Look At It Every Time I Drive To Work
Looks like something a four year old would build in Minecraft but, no, someone actually got paid to design this butt ugly monstrosity that blocks an otherwise cool view of downtown.
actually yes in downtown when its not raining, and when its not to hot or to cold or to humid.....
Load More Replies...storage buildings are always the weirdest. In my town they put a small charter school type thing next to a massive storage building. it basically blocks the sun
Thats prettier than what i could build in Minecraft but still its VERY ugly
Is this new construction? There are several former mill buildings in Milwaukee that have been converted into storage facilities, with equally garish color choices.

The Asymmetry Would Drive Me Nuts
I kinda... Like it? 😅 But even if I didn't, symmetry makes houses usually look pretty awful, so I'm a bit confused about the title.
I don't like it, but not because of the lack of symmetry - I agree with you on that one.

1) The side windows, if there are any, have a view of the building next door, which are only a few inches away. How TF could anyone clean not only the outside of any side windows that exist, but also that skinny opening on either side? 2) If this is an older Victorian or Craftsman house, whoever put this shitty (literally, look at the color—-it looks like someone had diarrhea with weird chunks all over it, then puked up some pumpkin pie filling on the steps) stucco over the original wood should be hunted down, then taken out and shot.
I am still shocked every time I see this in big cities. I honestly don't know how people can afford to live there. I bought a 2500 sq ft house in the suburbs of my city, and it was only $185,000 - and had a yard the size of a football field! Colleagues in Seattle said, "That would cost a million dollars here!" Which is exactly why I stay put.

The “Blender” On The Campus Of The University Of Oklahoma. That’s All One Building. I Took Math Classes In This Thing Back In The 90s
The bottom reminds me of the (now demolished) Myriad convention center in downtown Oklahoma City-wonder if they used the same architect?
Looks like the old building in Lincoln Nebraska where they used to have the annual circus
Looks like something Edward Stone would design (Kennedy Center, SUNY Albany, GM Buildingn in NYC, etc.)

A lot of these are quirky, whimsical or simply trying. If you want real architectural shame, try the lazyass soulless glass skyscrapers that dominate most cities or the shoebox sized apartments with tiny windows or the cheap concrete slabs that make up a lot of retail units or transport hubs
I like a lot of these; and those I don't like, I still respect for trying something different. Never understood why architecture couldn't be more playful. Everyone loves a Huntervasser or a Gaudi building, why don't we have more like them!?
*Hundertwasser, German for hundred water ;) And I agree, it's art after all.
