A picture says a thousand words. Or raises a million questions. Maybe even more when it comes to real estate listings. After all, it's not every day you get to see a ceiling piano.

But the appropriately titled subreddit 'Ridiculous Real Estate' is full of such absurdity. Much like the legendary 'Ugly Irish Houses' and 'The Broke Agent', it shares the funniest and weirdest architectural and interior design features that homeowners have ever installed.

It's like the polar opposite of all those pretty decor boards on Pinterest.

'Hi, is that the Estate Agent? Great! Yeah, I'm looking for a place that's freezing in the winter and really uncomfortably hot in the summer. No, that's fine. The less private the better. Sounds like it ticks all the boxes, one last thing. Does it look disconcertingly like a prison from a World War 2 movie?'

The interior is rather modern and cosy. You wouldn't catch me throwing stones if I lived there though. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1910-Corbridge-Ln-Monkton-MD-21111/36206811_zpid/?

The tub on wheels looks like something from Mr. Bean. He would get in pull the lever to move it and somehow it would shoot him through the window and out on the street. Followed by a sequence where he rolls through town in the tub.

We managed to get in touch with the creator of the subreddit, u/tavenger5, and they were kind enough to have a little talk with us about it.

"I started 'Ridiculous Real Estate' after seeing weird or over-the-top extravagance during my own house hunting," the Redditor told Bored Panda. "I wanted a place to share the ridiculousness, and it seems others do too." Indeed, since its inception in 2016, the online community has grown to 27.7K members and while the number doesn't sound like much if you compare it to some giants like r/AntiWork, for such a narrow niche, it's quite something. The best part is that it remains active and still receives new content.

"The community has a keen eye for the bizarre living environment. Original content often comes from locals searching for a new place to live," u/tavenger5 said. "These are likely pics that others would never see unless looking at real estate in the same area. The community really brings light to the strangeness that some people enjoy living in or around."

Its an old converted carriage house. That window used to literally be a barn door. Carriage/buggy on one side, stalls for the horses on the other, and the hay upstairs. You can see a reflection of the house it probably was associated with in the window (nice 2nd story sleeping porch). I'd guess that lower floor is one open space and it just happens you can see the toilet from this angle.

This looks like a mountain home designed to be lived in all year. We have a lot in this "style" near me. The sharply sloped roof keeps too much snow from building up while its still snowing. The roof broken up into different directions keeps it from having 5 ft of snow all slide off when the sun comes out, crushing your car. The ground level overhangs provide pockets when the wind blows and you get severe drifting. Front left one is the wood pile. The mini porches all ingress/egress when the snow is at different levels throughout the winter. You can see a smaller woodpile on the lowest porch midframe.

Being familiar with all the trends of the subreddit, u/tavenger5 said that "it seems like there are a lot of homes out there that people build or make into something that resembles a castle. In 'Ridiculous Real Estate', the more cringe the better."

And while you might like to philosophize with a friend over a beer that there is no such thing as bad taste, a scroll through these pictures should convince you otherwise. "There are some submissions where it's obvious the people that inhabited a house couldn't change their situation if they wanted to or not. That is different from bad taste," u/tavenger5 highlighted.

"Bad taste happens when someone made a conscious decision to do something in their house that they think is perfectly fine (or are clearly into it), but most people would agree that it looks or functions in a strange way. Other ridiculousness comes from over the top style of the times that hasn't changed since."

Lately, 'Ridiculous Real Estate' must have seen an increased number of submissions as the Covid-19 pandemic upended the home-buying process. Historically-low mortgage rates coupled with an inventory shortage created a red hot market, with houses selling within just hours of being listed, often for well over the asking price.

And while no one knows exactly what the future has in store, housing experts told CNBC Make It that in 2022, buyers can expect similar trends to the past two years: elevated prices, low inventory, and fast turnaround.

Zillow predicts that it will continue to be a seller's market and home values are expected to increase by double-digital percentage points, but Skylar Olsen, principal economist at Tomo, a home-buying app, thinks it won't be quite as wild as it was this year.

"None of us can promise that [finding] housing will be easy," Olsen highlighted. "But it feels reasonable to promise that it will be easier than this past year."

Actually most of the walls are white and the rooms are a great size. The over fussiness is mostly from stuff that the seller will be taking away with them. Brilliant piece of advice from Kirsty Allsopp (property show presenter in UK) - lie on the floor and look at the ceiling - that's the floor space you'll be getting.

The Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates a few times in 2022, which means mortgage rates will likely rise. Both Redfin and Realtor.com predict a 30-year-fixed mortgage rate will reach 3.60% by the end of 2022, compared to an average of 3.30% now.

But according to Olsen, that’s not necessarily bad news for buyers. The silver lining of higher mortgage rates is that fewer speculative buyers will be in the market (because there is less money to be made). That could help the average person.

"When you have higher interest rates, it becomes more of the people who buy homes just to live in them. That’s something the market will benefit from, coming back down to sanity."

“When buying a home in the next year or longer, it will be important to watch new listings, including ‘coming soon’ listings, and be very prepared to not only visit the home quickly, but prepare to decide and extend an offer almost immediately,” Glenn Phillips, CEO and lead economic analyst for Lake Homes Realty, told CNBC Make It.

But with that said, don’t overpay for a house that, for example, includes 13 dead people out back. Prices will be up, so be careful not to take something outside of what’s reasonable for your budget.

A local real estate agency posted a listing for a house on their website. One of the photographs showed that the house stood next door to a cemetery. In the description, the house was described as having "quiet neighbors." It was meant to be humorous. A living neighbor complained, saying it disrespected the dead, besmirched the neighborhood's reputation, and demanded the statement be deleted. The agency complied. Still the rest of us were wondering how that person figured a comment like that was going to ruin the neighborhood's reputation. I don't mind having dead, quiet neighbors, but *that* one. No thank you.

It use to drive me nuts but now I just go with it and that's how I introduce myself. My voicemail is even set up to say, " It's Marsha Marsha Marsha. You know what what to do!" May as well embrace it!

I feel exactly the same! But a big no on the fluorescent strip light, that would have to be switched out with some twinkly lights... I would rather be in the tiniest of rooms, as long as it had nice, warm, low lighting- ambience is everything, to me... I would actually read in my closet as a teenager, I just had some twinkle (Christmas, fairy, everyone has a different name for them, you know what I mean...) lights strung up, and some pillows and blankets under my clothes, it was an awesome little refuge... Anyway. I like to ramble.

Hunting is generally regulated. While most tend go for trophy hunting or for food and materials (Native Americans are exempt from getting hunting licenses), another reason is for the sake of ecological conservation against overpopulation and invasive species. Invasive species are not native to the area and thus were a part of tbe local ecosystem. Due to this, invasive species threaten the local ecosystem as their population is able to grow freely at the price of threatening (if not severely diminishing) local wildlife populations. One example is the Himalayan tahr in New Zealand, who were introduced for sport hunting, now threaten the native fauna population due to their large population. Thousands are hunted for this reason. And then there is the feral hogs in America. Their population explosion and all of the problems that have come with it have been well documented. Human efforts to curb their numbers using everything from helicopter hunting to poison haven’t been successful.

It has so much potential! Needs some large warm area rugs on the floor a section by the far window with some large wooden shelves full of books for a reading nook and a couple of very comfy oversized pieces of warm furniture to read in. A wooden bar area could be nice, and separate sitting area around the fireplace for drinks and conversation. Where the small couch is, could be a entertainment area with your TV, surround sound, stereo, and furniture for chilling with family and friends. It could be so many things.

Yes, apparently it needs to stand out from the historic parts of the building in a way that will not falsify the original look and make it easy to distinguish between historical artifacts. The blue color they chose however was not required.

Over the past several years, we’ve created a space, a literal house-in-a-barn, that displays many of Grandpa’s old farm relics, while adding modern touches that appeal to guests of all ages. It’s actually not that bad when you look at the entire home. And yes, the flag is to remind one which country they’re in. The only country to display their flag more so than the USA is Canada, with 80% of their population on the border. It’s silly, but it’s thing. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/W6902-Prospect-Rd-Beaver-Dam-WI-53916/87920886_zpid/?

My house has a setup almost identical to this one. It’s pretty common for old houses. Mine was built in 1891; 4 bedrooms but only 1 bathroom. Toilet in the basement for emergencies. Haha the shower head comes in handy for bathing the dogs. No need for additional walls around it, as the basement is pretty much it’s own “room” anyway.

If they added some tile or mosaic rocks it would really work for this. Also the light could use a cover, the place needs a fan to prevent mold/mildew, and I hope that's bathroom paint on the walls/stairs.

I don’t understand why the more money you have, the more ridiculous sized rooms you want. What’s wrong with something cosy? Is this an American thing? A huge room with just a couple of pieces of furniture?

We have more undeveloped land and can build larger due to it. Some like to take advantage of that. Some do not. We have PLENTY of apartments, condos, townhomes and small family homes here as well....but they are not internet-interesting, so you simply do not see them as much online.

We have friends who have an actual stream that flows under their house, and they built part of the house around it. The first floor is wooden on the sides of the floor, and the middle is covered in some clear material as well as lit from underneath. It was seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

I think it's for social distancing, with the every-changing prescriptions -- 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 4ft, 5ft, 6ft -- different in every country. You can play the "If it's Tuesday this must be Belgium"-game, and sit at the day's country-specific "safe" distance.
