Your wife has been bugging you to get the dent in the car fixed. So you took it to the body shop for an estimate. And you realized if you paid the body shop it would mean you have to cut back on buying beer. So today on Handyman’s Corner I’m going to show you how to fix it for a fraction of the cost.

Experts claim we can mend many everyday products ourselves, while iFixit, a free online repair guide, even says that we should ‘never take broken for an answer.’

For many this is not news, but repairing broken items offers many benefits, with the most important being reducing waste. Each time we throw things that in our eyes no longer work, we not only clutter our planet with rubbish and pollute it but also waste resources like trees, metal, energy, and manpower required to manufacture these products. This is a deep issue that could be helped if more people repaired their things instead of trashing them at the first opportunity.

Another benefit repairment offers is saving money. And who doesn’t love that? Often, fixing something is cheaper than buying new, and even simple repairs like sewing a button or a patch on clothing extend their life for years. In the process, you can learn useful skills like sewing, using tools, and following instructions. This boosts our self-reliance and makes us feel more accomplished, as fixing items is hugely satisfying.

And even though the quality of products we purchase is getting worse (so we would buy more), Gordon-Byrne, the executive director of the Repair Association, still believes it’s important to repair the ones we currently have, as most likely, future products will continue to decline.

Flip it top to bottom so the part that's facing us now is facing away from us, then reverse the doorknob and put the hinges on the other side. You'll have a few holes where the hinges used to be, but that's way better than replacing the whole door.

However, if the cost to repair your item is higher than what you would spend for a new one, it might be time to think about purchasing a new one. Otherwise, definitely consider a fix.

If the pipe develops a hole and is loud, you can also cut of the top and bottom of a soda can and split it down one side. Wrap it around and secure it with metal rings.

When I was a kid, my dad bought a dirt bike that someone had “fixed” with the lid from a coffee can. He needed to be aware 100% of the time that that razor-sharp lid was there! In no time at all, he hit something and that jagged lid caused an injury that required ** 420 ** stitches to fix. While the surgeon was fixing it, my dad sold him our farm. DO NOT DO REPAIRS WITH RAZOR-SHARP ITEMS!

This is exactly the solution the previous owner of my classic car came up with for the secondary closing required on the bonnet of UK cars. I managed to buy the proper handle for the locking mechanism and the proper secondary latch, so it is has finally been removed. The hilarity is that the bonnet accounts for almost half the weight of the car and is a weight-lifting excerise to open it. Still, it might "blow open" if the car achieved sufficiently high speed - such as by freefalling off the Burj Khalifa!

You'd think that, but the hinges on our doors don't have removable pins! Perhaps they don't either. Still, taking the hinges off is easier than taking the toilet off.

It may be a hard-wired clock that needs to be repaired. When I worked in a government building, they had these. They could be reset in a central place without having to climb up and change them one by one. If so, bureaucracy and procedure may be taking to long to repair the clock.

That many circuits tripping could mean horrible wiring to begin with. In any case, extreme fire hazard. If injury/death results, or even no injury but fire department callout, person tampering with circuit breakers can be held legally liable for costs. Flaming idiot! (Pun works, eh?)

So cleaning the fan radiator wasn't an option then? I had a Sony laptop that sounded like a jet engine whenever it was turned on. Had to clean the radiator, and to do that properly required complete removal of the heatsink and application of fresh thermal paste. Worked for a while, but would quickly get clogged up again.

Depending on the pole type, they typically have to wait for the telecom guys to come out and remove their own wires before they can replace the poles. So this will do to hold it in place while whoever owns the line itself can come out and move them before a new pole can be put in.

Seen this kind of thing a couple times. Room was larger at one point, and got partitioned off. Rather than rip out the wiring and the fans, they just removed the offending blades and left it. I'd be willing to bet that the walls here are actually removable themselves, so if they later decide they need to change the floor plan of it, they can take the walls down and put the fan back in use.
