On her Instagram, Sarah creates content that helps other people in building meaningful friendships. Additionally, she provides personalized consultations for those who seek tailored guidance.
We wanted to know how Siegert became an expert in this field. She told us: “I became a friendship coach because when I moved abroad 4.5 years ago, friendships (new and existing ones) were the biggest struggle for me to navigate. I had a hard time leaving friends behind in my home country but even more so, I struggled to make friends in the country I moved to. It had a hugely negative effect on all areas of my life and so I had to do something about it.”

That can be a red flag. I had a friend like that once. She made scenes in so many restaurants and stores on "my" behalf that I was too embarrassed to patronize most of the businesses in our very small town ever again. Finally realized that it wasn't about me - she was just an angry person, looking for an excuse to go off on someone and feel virtuous about it. Be wary of such people.

I improved my relationship with myself immensely which was the biggest step and improvement that allowed me to meet new people and make new friends. Since then I've built an incredible circle of friends and I'm feeling happier in my friendships than ever before.”
“During that work, it became apparent that an incredibly large amount of people struggle to make friends once they enter the 'adult age' for several different reasons. This obviously also applies to expats who struggle even more due to apparent reasons such as the language barrier and different cultures they're navigating in a foreign country, which make it even harder for them.”

As we all know, building new friendships as adults can be challenging. We were wondering what advice Sarah would give to individuals who struggle to make new friends and expand their social circle. The expert said: “The biggest advice I can give is that the basis of a healthy and meaningful friendship is the relationship you have with yourself. If that relationship isn't healthy, none of your other relationships can be. You need to be in a place where you love yourself and can fulfill your own needs independently so that you can go out, make friends, and enjoy those connections rather than needing something from them. Then, making friends is simple: meet new people and connect with them.”
The friendship coach continued: “You can meet people online or in person and connect with them by having conversations, listening to them, getting to know them, showing curiosity and willingness to learn from them. You also need to be open and vulnerable to share your true self with them.”
We also found out that: “Another huge lesson is to be patient! It can take a while in order for us to call someone a good friend so don't give up if it doesn't 'work' straight away.”

I saw a woman drinking at the airport bar. I saw the same woman sit down on the plane a couple rows up from me. I saw her stumble off the plane with some assistance. I saw the crew cleaning up the mess that flew from her mouth around her seat. And I saw a standby passenger excitedly get her seat. No one said a word to the guy. If he didn't see her when she left and he couldn't tell anything happened there, why ruin his flight?

Last holiday I went on (pre-covid) we has something like a 6am flight. Which wouldn't be so bad in the "old" days when you could roll up an hour before it left and everything was good. Once you started doing logistics though, car in long term parking and bus from there to airport (allow 1/2 an hour), trip from home to parking (allow 1/2 an hour), getting up and ready (allow 1/2 an hour) to be at airport 3 hours early = needing to wake up 4.5 hours before flight. So about 1:30am. Two hours sleep before an international flight 0_o

Sarah told us: “First of all, it's important for you to become aware of what you want to communicate - how do you feel, what do you think, what would you like to share and why? You need to also get clear on the purpose of why you want to communicate a piece of information with your friend, what result do you want to achieve?”
“Your friends aren't responding for fulfilling your expectations or following what you think is right, that is a huge lesson to learn. Once you are clear on what/why you want to communicate something, you should work on being brave and courageous enough to have an honest conversation with your friend. Being safe enough to put yourself out there and to be vulnerable enough to share what you truly think.”

Worse... when you decide that you'll open up and tell them.... then... you get "oh, don't worry, yeah, you'll feel better soon" and you can almost HEAR them backing away, out the door, into "gee, I'm busy" mode. OR you get the friend who decides they're going to be the smart, edgy, 'Brave' one who tells you all the horrible things about yourself, because they just KNOW that's the 'right' thing to do (please note: These friends often haven't listened to you already telling them of all your own faults you're aware of, and you're asking for help... not more confirmation of how sh** you are)
Lastly, since our post features so many brilliant memes dedicated to ‘real besties’ and friendship in general, we were curious if Sarah could tell us how she perceives the role of humor in strengthening and maintaining deep, meaningful friendships. The coach explained: “Humor is something we connect with people over, it can be a factor people take into consideration to determine how much they feel attraction towards someone. So it can create and strengthen a connection or be the reason people choose not to connect with each other.”
“Humor can also be a fun and light way to deal with difficult situations such as arguments or disagreements. Just be mindful of checking that your friend has the same sense of humor or appreciates using humor in those situations as that can vary from person to person.”

Here's the order of the full conversation. 1) ME gently touching friend's hand until my friend catches my gaze and acknowledges what I see = me saying "look at what that jerk/idiot/dumbass is doing"; 2) FRIEND responds by gently touching my elbow just long enough = friend responding with "WTF? seriously?!?!"; 3) ME then slowly bringing my hand to the side of of my head so my thumb is touching the spot where my cheek meets my jaw bone just below my ear while my pointer and middle fingers are gently rubbing my temple and I simultaneously widen my eyes, raise one eyebrow, slight tilt of the head = me saying "we'll talk about this when they aren't in earshot"; 4) FRIEND responds by bringing their drink slowly to their mouth, taking a short drink while they slowly move their gaze to you, back to the jerk/idiot/dumbass, and then back to you again = them saying "oh, absolutely. we will completely dissect that horrible person and their horrible behavior". CLEAR communication is the key.

I'm always waiting on everyone else to show up,it's frustrating. The worst ever was when a friend kinda guilt tripped myself and and another friend to throw her a small party for her birthday that day and then she didn't show up until 4 hours later! The birthday girl came up with the time for the party and everything. This ended with the other friend and birthday girl no longer being friends or communicating at all and I am still cordial with her but def will not go out of my way for her ever again.

We live on the other side of the world from each other and so have not seen each other for up to a decade sometimes, but when we do get together it’s like there’s no time or distance between us. I used to have a bestie but she ghosted me over some probable mental health issues she was going through that she didn't share with me. It's been 8 years. I miss her sometimes but I'm mostly angry at her. She contacted me later in a very casual way which makes things even worse. You don't owe me anything, but if you want me in your life again you better come with an explanation.

I feel you, except it was my mental health issues and me getting sober which required detox and going to treatment for 90 days she didn’t have the mental capacity to support. In treatment you don’t talk to the outside world except for a few hours on the weekend. O_o’

Story time >:D So back in 7th grade me and my friends were sitting down at the friend groups lunch table (you know, the table you and all your friends sit at 24/7.) And one of my friends (we'll call them Z) tells my best friend (we'll call them Ally)"Nate Higgers. Now replace the first letters of both words while standing up." Basically, it's a trick people use to make others say the N word. Normally, the friend group would think about it before going along with Z's shenanigans. But Ally unfortunately didn't. So she just stood up and said "Hate-" then the N word, hard R and all. She immediately sat down with an embarrassed look on her face. I can't blame her, she just said that in a lunch room full of 7th graders. At least she didn't yell it like Z told her to. Now the friend group never lets her live it down, to the point she denies it even happening. This isn't even the worst of it all. TLDR; Friend gets tricked into saying the N word in a lunchroom full of 7th graders.

Is this supposed to be a funny story? Because it sounds like bullying, especially where the group of “friends” keeps being it up. Z sounds like an @sshole for making up this “funny” game.

I used to have a bestie but she ghosted me over some probable mental health issues she was going through that she didn't share with me. It's been 8 years. I miss her sometimes but I'm mostly angry at her. She contacted me later in a very casual way which makes things even worse. You don't owe me anything, but if you want me in your life again you better come with an explanation.

I feel you, except it was my mental health issues and me getting sober which required detox and going to treatment for 90 days she didn’t have the mental capacity to support. In treatment you don’t talk to the outside world except for a few hours on the weekend. O_o’
