There are all sorts of taxes that we are required to pay to participate in society: income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, value-added taxes, etc. They can all be nuisances, but of course, they are necessary to maintain public infrastructure and public services. There is one tax, however, that not everyone needs to pay but some companies try to slip in whenever they can: a stupid tax.
Allow me to introduce you to the Stupid Tax subreddit. This group is famous for sharing the most ridiculous examples of companies and individuals pricing their items without any logic. The group states that it is “for those in life who end up paying more because of their own idiocy”, and it has amassed nearly 40k members (or “idiots” as they call them) who are dedicated to exposing all of the stupid “taxes” they encounter every day. Enjoy this list of pics that will remind you to always look closely at price tags, and keep reading to also find an interview with Becky Goddard-Hill, award-winning parenting and lifestyle blogger and the woman behind the Family Budgeting blog. £2 For 20 Minutes
The fact that it's £2 for 20 mins charging time is dumb
Load More Replies...The assumption when shopping at the grocery store or buying a “meal deal” at a restaurant is usually that the more you buy, the better deal you receive. It might not make a huge difference, but if there is a small discount on larger purchases, it incentivizes customers to buy more. But sometimes the math just doesn’t add up. This is where the stupid tax comes in. When four pieces of an item costs $2 but 8 pieces costs $5, that’s the stupid tax. Somehow companies do get away with this because many customers are under the assumption that buying more will get them a better deal, but we’ve created this list to warn you that is not always the case.
Fine print and price tags should always be read closely because apparently it is quite common for stupid taxes to be snuck in on anything and everything. You can find it on “family size” packages of products at the grocery store, in the various shipping options when ordering something online, and on menus advertising various deals. Even at bake sales and garage sales operated out of schools and individuals’ driveways, read the signs carefully. They might have made a typo when pricing their greeting cards, or they might be trying to swindle you.

Technically if you need 200 wings for a large event it’s not the best to buy 200…
We reached out to budgeting expert Becky Goddard-Hill of the Family Budgeting blog to hear her thoughts on the "stupid tax". First, we wanted to know if she had any examples of encountering this tax out in the wild. "25% off flowers with a big shiny sticker that are already DEAD!" she said. Oh yeah, I've seen that stupid tax before too. We also asked Becky why she thinks people sometimes fall prey to this kind of ridiculous pricing. "People are in a rush, and looking to save a quick buck, so if it says 'bargain' in stand out advertising, they are likely to snap it up without pausing the think it through," she explained.
Next, we asked Becky for her best money-saving tips to avoid stupid taxes. "Consider every purchase before you buy and ask yourself these three questions: do you really need it, can you afford it and is it really a good deal? These three questions put the shopping breaks on and help you think it through," Becky told Bored Panda. "Keep trying it – write the questions in notes in your phone and check prior to every purchase that looks too good. Running through this list will soon become a habit and could save you every time." Lastly, Becky added, "Treat your money with care and respect and consideration just as you would anything precious to you and it will serve you well as a result. Look after it and it will look after you."

What A Sale
Every single time. It's rare that I've found a good deal online and usually it's probably 15% or something and it's in limited stock.
That's highly illegal. If you can prove it, you could get some money out of it.
Amazon does this a lot too. 40% off the totally random and ridiculously high “full price”!
That's what retailers do. A friend of mine worked for a department store years ago. He said before every big "sale" they had to re-tag all the merchandise with higher retail prices.
The funny thing about the stupid tax is that it’s not always clear whether a seller is trying to pull a fast one on their consumers or if they genuinely made a mistake by miscalculation. They might have wanted to provide a better deal with their larger product or for those who purchase more, but not everyone is great at doing math in their heads. And everything requires a proofread before being sent to print; sometimes we just don’t catch the small details.
Unfortunately, inflation might be making the stupid tax even more rampant. Companies are adjusting the size of their products constantly, so even if the price has not changed over time, customers might be getting less product in each package. This idea of “shrinkflation” is being discussed more and more as inflation has reached a 40-year high. Jon Miltimore addressed the topic in his recent article for Fee titled “Yes, the Products You’re Buying Are Getting Smaller—Even Though Prices Are Not”. He explained that it’s easier to notice when prices rise, but sometimes packages can become smaller without consumers noticing at first glance.
The Ultimate Stupid Tax
Yes! This needs to be a thing! Two questions for .75 or three for a 1.00!
I'll take the three for a dollar, just in case. Lol

I've legit had people complain about this before. I always round my change up to the dollar. I'm the one losing money here, friend.
i want to up this, but then i feel like i am as bad as the person complaining. i don't want to hit the down because it's worthy of laughing at. I feel conflicted. Do i like it or hate it? I'll just post and leave it here. I'm flabbergasted.
Miltimore explains that shrinkflation can be in reference to quantity or quality of a product lessening, while the price stays the same, and it is just as bad as prices going up altogether. He went on to note some examples of companies sneakily adjusting their packaging without informing customers like Kleenex boxes now containing only 60 tissues compared to 65 previously and Chobani Flips yogurt cups shrinking to a measly 4.5 ounces when they had been 5.3 ounces before.
At the same time, Domino’s Pizza has begun selling an eight-piece pack of chicken wings for the same price as the ten-piece pack they used to sell. Crest tubes of toothpaste now contain only 3.8 ounces when they used to have 4.1, and 32-ounce bottles of Gatorade have been replaced with 28-ounce bottles. In fact, the Gatorade bottles cost even more now than they previously did. Okay, I’m sure you get the point: there are countless brands trying to rip off their customers due to inflation. So don’t forget to check those price tags and product weights closely, "stupid taxes" may be included.

A New Kind Of Stupid Tax
This is on Canada, I've seen it driving and thought it was hilarious.
sorry, I'm American. what is 140 km/h in bananas per football field?
I was driving up to Mikisew Provincial Park in Ontario last weekend with some friends, we saw a sign on the highway that says "stunt driving fines apply at 150 km/hour". My friend turns to me and says "so the limit is 149".
I live in Ontario and you see these pictures all the time. From the looks of this, it is out by Cobourg heading East? Anyhow, this is only showing you the Demerit points, not the full picture of what would happen at those speeds. Ontario introduced "stunt driving" laws several years ago. Given this is a highway, if you are caught doing 150 km/h you face "stunt driving" charges on top of demerit points. This means at the Roadside they will: - suspend your licence for 30 days - impound your vehicle for 14 days. You also face fines up to $10,000. Basically if you are caught going above 150 you will NOT be driving away, they will take your car and license from you on the spot. Doesn't matter if it is a Connecticut license, an out of province car, a rental.. They have taken all these in the past. Something to keep in mind if you ever travel to Ontario.
Its because there are other signs on same Ontario Highway that show those three speeds and the money fines you have to pay. (Bureaucratic symetry?)
The Vending Machine In My Office. Pay Attention When You Buy Stuff, Y’all
I'm guessing they were out of bottles or something that cost slightly more. and didn't have it so they loaded extra cans not realizing the price was different. This happened a couple of times at a store I used to work at. The vendors don't read sometimes.
Some companies really stand by their additions of the stupid tax though. In a recent article for Quartz, Clarisa Diaz spoke to several company representatives about their contributions to shrinkflation. “Inflation is hitting everyone…we took just a little bit out of the bag so we can give you the same price and you can keep enjoying your chips,” said a representative for Frito-Lay in reference to Doritos bags shrinking during the pandemic. And when it comes to the Gatorade bottles having a new look and conveniently including four less ounces to drink, a company representative said, “Basically we redesigned the bottle, it’s more aerodynamic and it’s easier to grab. The redesign generates a new cost and the bottles are a little bit more expensive…this is only a matter of design.”
Genius
What if this is simply the ultimate strategy to sell your stuff fast without the bargaining hassle? Like everyone will offer to buy the two things separately to be a smartass who got it "cheap"... when in reality 30$ for that used shelf is probably not that cheap?
Bargain!
Better buy two pairs, it's unlikely another deal like this will come along!

Load More Replies...If you’re looking to avoid the stupid tax and keep an eye out for shrinkflation, Edgar Dworsky, founder and editor of Consumer World, provided some tips in an article for Today. He explained that this practice is nothing new and many companies feel pressure to participate in shrinkflation, but if you want to get the most bang for your buck, don’t be scared to look to other brands. Store brands are typically the last ones to shrink, and if they provide a comparable product, why not purchase them instead? He also notes that you can always check the price per measure or per unit that should be on store labels. “It helps you compare the price per ounce or per 100 sheets, for example, of differing brands and sizes of the same item," Dworsky notes. Lastly, he recommends becoming net-weight conscious. “Learn the net weight of the products you regularly buy. Memorize them. And when you shop, check the net weight to make sure it has not changed.”
A $122 Water Bottle Because It Has A Crystal Inside It
Love the "ancient texts that date back thousands of years". Yeah, like the Egyptians and mesopotamians who used crocodile dung as a contraceptive. And no, not eating it, shoving it up in the relevant place. I forget who said it but "old stuff isnt sacred, its just old"
Except that, other than crystal magic, this ancient crocodile dung "medicine" actually worked most of the time. The Egyptians were extremely advanced medically for their time - and they did not play around with spells and crystals when there was real medicine to be had. Most of their medicine focused on herbal remedies - but not the homeopatic kind, but the ones that actually contain active ingredients. They had about 95% accurate pregnancy tests and could diagnose diabetes or cancer (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8459052/ for an introduction).
Load More Replies...Sure, crystal points like those can cost a fair bit.... but that's still an outrageous price. Not only that, but you want to be really careful which stones you actually put into water or even get wet, since some of them will leech various toxins into the water. Or just outright dissolve, like selenite. The three on the right should be fine since they're from the quartz family, but I can't tell what the one on the left is. Not that I think that putting crystals into your drinking water does anything whatsoever. But good to know if you wanted to do something decorative, maybe.
The only way to get a crystal to vibrate is to apply voltage to it. Like a quartz crystal in a watch. Any other "vibration" is at the atomic level like all atoms and not at an amplitude that could affect any life form. There is probably more "energy" emitted from a blade of grass that is alive than a chunk of crystal.
I'm going to be selling water bottles with grass in them, in that case.

Load More Replies...Sometimes a stupid tax is more obvious than others. If two products are right next to each other, it can be easy to compare them. But when it has been months since you last purchased an item, you might not know off the top of your head how much it should cost. Unfortunately, we are also very susceptible to flashy advertising and any messaging that disguises itself as a deal or discount, so it’s important to be vigilant to avoid stupid taxes. For example, some of the photos on this list feature something along the lines of “Previous price: $149, now available for only $160 for a limited time!” Don’t let the red lettering and the slash through the original price fool you, this is a stupid tax in action.
A Year Or Lifetime? Hmmm
Tough choice....I mean what if I don't want to commit to using it forever...I might stop after 7 months. Best just get a year! /s
Two examples of the Stupid Tax. Wal-Mart has 10 packs of the oatmeal I like for $3.23. The 20 pack size is $7.86. That is a -$1.40 savings! Costco has too brands of ice cream bars in the freezer right next to each other. One breaks down the price per ounce, the other ones is price per ice cream bar. Since one is 6.7 ounces the math is hard for my old brain. I just take the box which has more bars in it. Simple...

People were cleaning this cart off like it was free gasoline. A woman picks up one and made a comment about it being a nice frame and a good price. I pointed out the end cap. She picked up one o each, compared, laughed and took 2 from the endcap. Excellent marketing strategy there K-Mart. Too bad it didn't save you as a company.
Some people might think that imposing a stupid tax is completely up to the business owner and that it is a matter of “survival of the fittest”. If someone does not realize that a price has increased or they are getting ripped off, they deserve to be swindled! But it is just not ethical for companies to try to trick consumers. If someone has a disability or is elderly and does not have the vision that they once did, they might have a hard time spotting a price discrepancy. And grocery shopping should not require jumping through hoops. Everyone deserves to pay the lowest price possible, not just the people savvy enough to read the fine print.

At my alma mater, at the beginning of every school year they'd give the dorm residents a free dop kit with stuff like perfume/aftershave, shaving cream, disposable razors, etc. They were pretty obviously gendered, because the "female" kits had perfume and pink razors, the "male" kits had aftershave and black razors. One year, they made a mistake and mislabeled the dop kits--the "female" kits were black/aftershave, the "male" kits were pink/perfume. I'm female. Most of my friends willingly swapped their dop kit for the "right" one, with no issue. I decided I liked the aftershave more than I liked the perfume, and there was no real difference between the razors/shaving cream other than the color of the razor/can, so I just kept the "wrong" kit. There were enough kits to go around, nobody had to do without because I wanted to keep the "male" kit for myself.
Female products are always more expensive, after all, women earn more right?

Years ago, my family lived in a subdivision where a Hallmark employee lived. A couple of times a year, the Hallmark guy, with his employer's blessing, would bring in a semitruck full of old/expired greeting cards and other Hallmark merchandise, at rock-bottom prices. I got years' worth of stationery/greeting cards that way--as long as you avoided the stuff with an actual date on it, it was a very good deal.
There is a common sales tactic where people will take the middle option of 3 offered. Wonder if this isn't trying to trick people into paying more...
There are also ways for companies to go about increasing their prices without trying to mislead consumers. It might still result in angry emails and boycotts sparked on Twitter, but customers deserve transparency. When changes are made, companies should inform their customer base through a letter or email addressing exactly why, when and how a price increase will be implemented. According to Swetha Amaresan at HubSpot, being up front and honest about price changes is the best thing a business can do. She recommends that business owners contact their clients directly and well in advance to minimize pushback.

At McDonalds (at least the ones local to me), there's a loop hole with the nuggets. A 4-piece is $1.00. But a 6-piece is $3.49. You can buy 4 4-piece nuggets (12 total nuggets) for cheaper than the 1 6-piece. And this continues to carry throughout the sizes (although not as severe). 10-piece is $5.19 (3x4-piece=$3, and you get 2 more nuggs), 20-piece is $7.19 (5x4-piece= $5). It's always cheaper to buy multiple 4-pieces than the bigger packs. You'd think it would, and should, be the other way around.
This is exactly what I do. My kids like the nuggets and the older one wants 9 and the younger 3, so we do three 4-piece for a really good deal.

I Like That The Sale Discount Is A Negative Amount
Swetha also notes the importance of ensuring that the quality of a product or service will be maintained. In fact, higher prices should mean better quality. She also says that the reasoning behind the increased prices should be made clear. “For instance, as some raw materials become increasingly scarce and expensive, companies that utilize these materials are forced to increase the prices for products that use them,” she says. “Laying that out to customers will prove your willingness to be transparent.” Inflation has affected everyone and everything, but honestly is always the best policy. Customers should be able to make an informed decision whether or not they want to continue supporting a company, rather than being tricked into paying more.

Even with a calculator (phone) in front of them, they don't know what numbers to input and/or they don't know which math operation is necessary to have the correct answer. Certainly relieved I don't teach math anymore!!!!! (Retired after 40yrs)

But this is normal. They want you to subscribe for the whole year, so they make it cheaper
But if you bought 1 month at a time, 3 months would only cost $29.97

I disagree, at least in mobile games it's ok. If the IGP doesn't make the game pay to win then it's completely fair to have it because the game is probably free. Game development is something really expensive and really hard to do, if you like the game give the developers some love.
Load More Replies...Not sure if this is real but there are games that do things like this. I saw one where the "best value" option they kept pushing removed ads and gave you 500 coins for $13.99. But if you looked through the store section, ad removal was $1.99 and 750 coins was $9.99. I never do in game purchases but stuff like this is pretty common.
Can confirm this is either old or photoshopped. 550 is $4.99 and 1200 is $9.99

12 For $4 Or 24 For $10
The boxes containing the products are different widths. They do this stuff all the time with holiday packs, just usually not as blatant with side by side!

Doesn't happen often that a product labeled for women is actually cheaper than the regular one.
Very true. I do wonder though, what's so different about women's ears that means they need their own special earplugs.

Is that "Lena buys one" (smart) or "Lena goes grocery shopping"?
It's "Lena goes grocery shopping". Otherwise, it would need to be "Lena kauft einen" to be grammatically correct (or even "Lena kauft einen Apfel")

Jokes on you if you buy airpods in general. You can get earbuds that have the same design and slightly better technology, for around 1/3 the price. I can at least see someone making a case for macbooks because os preference (they suffer from the same issue, theyre about 2x the price of an equivalent spec laptop) but paying $240 for mediocre earbuds, that are almost exactly the same as many on the market is dumb
I have Huawei Freebuds 4i and they cost me maybe a quarter of the AirPods Pro price and they sound amazing. There is a noise cancelling feature too, that works very well.

I Always Tip 20%, But That Seems A Little High
"Suggested gratuity is calculated after tax and before discounts" could mean there is a discount on this bill and the 20% is based on that higher total.
Exactly why the suggested tip amounts were added. People would use a coupon for like buy one get one free and not tip on the free meal.

Shopping For Backpacks To Take With Us On Our Trip And We Come Across This. They Are The Exact Same Backpack, Inside And Out
This looks like winners (tjx), in which case i can clarify as a former employee. They only do discounts based on how long the merchandise has been in the store, they don't have traditional sales. So the discount one is from a shipment a month back, marked down, and the other one arrived in a later shipment and therefore hasnt reached the point past which they discount. Their stores dont have a traditional inventory system and work quite differently, which is why this happens. Also it looks like the full price one has a reprinted tag, and was actually likely given the wrong price, again, a result of their somewhat unusual system.
To be fair, there are enough willfully ignorant people out there who don't realize when they're being duped.
When stores list a sale 10 for $10 some people think they have to buy 10 to get the sale price.
