50 Parents That Had Such Hilariously Bad Run-Ins With Technology Their Kids Just Had To Share
Technology is constantly changing. Our phones become obsolete every 2 years or so, and our laptops only last about 5 years. There’s always a new app, device or social media platform to get used to, and it doesn’t seem like technological advancements will be slowing any time soon.
For generations who grew up without the internet and smartphones, it can seem impossible to master even basic tech skills. So some people simply choose not to! Below, you’ll find photos of some of the funniest technological fails people have shared of their parents around the web. From using their devices in creative ways to completely misunderstanding the purpose of certain technology, enjoy scrolling through these funny pics, and be sure to upvote the ones that remind you of your own parents!

Walked In On My Dad Using A Magnifying Glass To Read Text On His iPhone
My dad doesn't know how to zoom in on his iPhone. This is how he reads his texts and emails.
Agreed. Often after zooming in the text doesn't adjust properly and you end up scrolling horizontally to read each line. It's one of the reasons why I prefer my laptop over my smartphone.

My parents. Both of them will grab any charger and fit it into whatever receptacle they think could match. They often press it on hard enough that both charger and port are now broken. It's then the "stupid technology" that's at fault for not working.
Unlikely, unless she somehow dug up a very ancient calculator power adapter that actually used a 3.5mm phones-style plug.
Load More Replies...Technically, mobile phones have been in existence since 1973, when Motorola unveiled the 0G or Zero Generation phones. But as you can imagine, they’ve come a long way since then. The first cell phone that I remember my mother having was a tiny flip phone with an even tinier camera. Texting required pressing each button up to 3 times to get the correct letter that you’re looking for, and using the internet was technically possible but excruciating and expensive.
The internet has also been around for quite a while at this point, as many people consider its “birthday” to be January 1, 1983. Back then, however, it was obviously very different than how it is today. We didn’t get Google until 1998, YouTube until 2005, and the idea of spending hours and hours online each day was absurd a few decades ago. But today, the average person spends nearly 7 hours a day on the internet.
My Friend's Mom's Phone
Glioblastoma is the worst kind of brain cancer, would f****d up your personnality and then kill you in less than a year. That's kind of worriying...
A couple of years ago, my phone started being reeeally slow. I was considering getting a new one. Also, for some reason I just kind of assumed that the browser tabs got closed every time you did a restart. Turns out I had over 9500 open tabs! But I know better now.
Holy s**t, there's a limit? My wife keeps hundreds open, and even she's never hit this.
Lol me here with over 1000 tabs open. I think this can be an iPhone notification. I use and android and have never gotten a notification like that. And no I'm not exaggerating I do have over 800 tabs currently open in group tabs.
Lol I‘m like this. I use my browser as a … what do you call it in English? I let the tabs open as a reminder… I have a tab group for recipes, for interesting things, for things for my children and so on. Lol Oh and I‘m a Millenial by the way
In her defense, it constantly creates a new tab every time you open it.
My Mom always has hundreds of tabs open on her phone and it is so annoying whenever I need to use it. No.1 reason why I always close all of my tabs and apps if I'm not using them
My Mother's Desktop
Me: "Mom, What Is That On Your iPhone?", My Mom: "Oh, I Needed To Remember My Friend's Phone Number"
These posts were funny, till I got to this one. Somehow it's not as funny when you realize you do it too... than it's freaking hilarious! 🤣
Considering how drastically technology has changed over the past few decades, it should come as no surprise that older generations often struggle to keep up with these changes. I’m Gen Z, and the idea of learning how to utilize AI technology like ChatGPT sounds overwhelming to me. So I imagine that it must be strange to have grown up without access to the internet at all and to now live in a time with smartphones, smart watches, AI, unlimited access to news and more.
It’s easy to laugh at our elders when they use electronics in questionable ways and don’t understand how to accomplish simple tasks like taking screenshots and printing out recipes. But in only a few decades, we might be just as technologically illiterate. So it’s best to be patient and understanding with our parents and grandparents and try to slowly teach them how to use technology to make their lives easier.

Nah, I get that. It's a recipe so you don't want to be touching your dirty phone screen as you cook. She probably just didn't have an easy way to print the recipe, So this was quick and easy.
I LOVE that problem-solving. If I'm at home and bothering no one, screw it! ANY way I can solve my problem is brilliant.
If you’re a millennial or zoomer who’s interested in helping your parents or grandparents get accustomed to the latest technology, Papa Inc. has some recommendations on their site for bringing these older generations into the 21st century. First, they note the importance of addressing security concerns before sending seniors out into the Wild West of the world wide web. Scams and fraud run rampant online, and many perpetrators target older, less technologically savvy individuals. They must all know not to talk to strangers on the phone or provide any personal information online. And of course, don’t click on random links!
My Parents Watch TV Without Moving The Mouse
On the one hand, that would annoy me. But on the other hand, having the progress bar displayed can sometimes be good. But on the other, other hand, in the photo it looks like they are just screen mirroring the desktop and not actually casting netflex...

My Mom's Staying For Thanksgiving. She Wanted To Make Tea But Instead Of Asking For Help With The Electric Kettle She Microwaved My Rechargeable, Self-Heating Mug And Caught It On Fire
$200 down the drain.
damn man, I got mine (not cordless) for 30 bucks on amazon. Edit: the kettle not the mug.
I was gifted one of these once. I loved it dearly for two years, but when it broke I got the cheaper $50 knockoff. It just wasn’t worth the extra $150 to have the mug text me when it reached temperature. I still miss it though
Load More Replies...It’s wise to take it slowly when teaching older generations about new technology too. Things that may seem extremely simple to you can be complex for them, and there’s no point in teaching a loved one if it’s only going to overwhelm them and stress them out. Go slowly, and be patient. Answer all the questions they have, and don’t make them feel dumb for asking whatever questions come up. Try not to overload them with information; there’s no rush to learning!
My Mom Posted A Valentine’s Message On Facebook, But The Computer Was Logged On To My Dad’s Account, So It Looks Like My Dad Posted A Valentine’s Message To... Himself
Maybe it was really the father expressing his admiration to the person he loves the most.

That's such an innocent, funny, sweet and dumb mistake. I'm honestly thinking you have such sweet parents❤️

I have friends that have become very involved in my bodily functions (i'm 60f) after a stint in the hospital when I almost had to have surgery to remove an obstruction in my bowel. That hurt. Load More Replies...Papa Inc. also recommends keeping notes and writing down things that can help seniors have an easier time online. Write down their passwords, important email addresses and websites they’ll want to visit frequently. Provide them with instructions for how to get to these sites when you’re not around, and write down the answers to any questions you ask so they’ll be easily accessible in the future. It’s hard to remember everything at once, and seniors will likely feel more comfortable if they have something physical they can rely on, such as a notepad or piece of paper.

This Phone My Dad Left On Charge For 4 Months
Since phones are smart enough to stop charging when they reach 100% I call BS on this.
Apparently you've never had to deal with this. Phones can stop charging IF they detect the proper voltage range to cut off the juice. But batteries deteriorate over time and cheap batteries quicker. Get one that is either cheap enough or failed in just the right way that it can't report back the correct voltage while you keep pumping more juice in, and they'll turn into spicy pillows. I had to deal with one about 2 weeks ago.
Load More Replies...Looks like one I found in a drawer after a couple years of just sitting.
On the up side, it should run for weeks now without a charge. Just look at the juice in it!
I don't like to keep a charger on my phone no more than until it gets a full charge. Even if the battery is low when I go to bed I don't like to charge it over night. I don't want to over charge it. I am 64.
Your senior parents and grandparents probably won’t be using the internet the exact same way you do, so if you’re teaching them how to use tech, be sure to consider what they will want to do. They might not need TikTok and Instagram on their smartphones, but they might like to have a few games and news apps. And remember to adapt their devices to their needs. Make font sizes larger, and show them how to use voice text. They might also prefer using voice controls to typing, so make sure they know how to program their devices to make them as user friendly as possible.

When it comes to smartphones in particular, Business Insider recommends a few ways that we can program seniors’ devices to make them more accessible. Aside from increasing font sizes and display sizes, it’s also possible to increase contrast, bold text and more. You can even make the keyboard larger on smartphone screens. Helping seniors organize their home screen can be useful too. Place everything that they need easily visible, and uninstall anything they won’t use to eliminate confusion.

Load More Replies...Setting up favorites can be helpful for seniors’ phones too. On iPhones, users can pin contacts in the Messages app to make them easily accessible, and you can even make a Favorites section in your contacts. You can also select custom ringtones for specific contacts, so seniors will know exactly who is calling without even needing to look at their phone screen. And don’t forget to add medical information and emergency contacts into seniors’ phones to ensure they can easily be found in the event of an emergency.

My Parents Insist On Having The TV On A Wall That Gets Blasted With Glare
My parents set up their TV on a wall that gets hit on 2 sides with natural light. This is with the shades down at 5:00 PM, it actually gets worse than this midday and they refuse to get blackout curtains or anything.
Or can they watch anything? Most of what you are getting glare. I record certain shows. If it has a dark background, I either watch h it early in the morning or later in the afternoon or early evening. Otherwise I have a hard time seeing the screen from the glare from the windows/sun.

Part of why I wish my mom was still alive is because I'd love to see how she'd handle tech. My parents are actually pre-Boomer (yeah, I know, there's a label for that generation, too, but screw it - labels suck) and my dad just barely has a handle on his tablet and still gets flustered by his phone. It's quite hilarious, actually, so I wonder how my mom would've done.
How My Parents Store Their DVDs
Back when CDs were very new tech, I saw a news segment about them. It explained how amazingly robust they are, illustrated with footage of CDs scattered all over a Japanese girl's bedroom (because they were already popular over there), with her even stepping on small piles of them. I'm still pissed off at the enormity of the lie.
My sister did that too with DVDs and Games - that's why I never lend her anything
I've got about 2k DVD's & Blu Rays, I'm seriously contemplating chucking the boxes and keeping the disks. The whole lot are ripped onto my Plex server anyway, I only keep the discs as proof of purchase.

Phones can experience catastrophic failure like this from a few things; bad battery, wrong kind of charger, very rarely when running a major OS update they can get stuck in a loop and start a thermal event. It's rare, but when you're talking hundreds of millions of phones, that's still a lot. OP said it was left to install the update while charging so likely that latter one. I've personally seen phones get physically too hot to handle when stuck in an update like that.
