What architects draw on the blueprints and what designers model can be a very far cry from what ends up being constructed. Pipes and wires in random places. Sloppily set tiles. Toilets that are beyond saving. Interiors and exteriors that seem to hate people. These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to laziness and rushed work.
‘Les Perles du Bâtiment,’ aka ‘Building Pearls,’ is a popular French Facebook group that features some of the most hilariously horrible construction fails. We’ve collected some of the very worst offenders. Scroll down to check them out, and upvote the ones that made you gasp and say, ‘Mon Dieu, quelle horreur!’

yeah and a proper 90° elbow fitting for that would only have been about 70¢. Way to be frugal DUDE!
I'm guessing there's someone in authority that told them to make it work when told they didn't have the needed parts.
Load More Replies...Doesn't belong on this list since it's obviously a joke. Belongs on the Ultimate Burns list XD
How is this a "construction fail"? Someone just put that microscope there. Funny, but in the wrong list.
It takes far less effort to relay it like this, pressure wash it then repaint. You'd have to number each brick to lay it back the way it came out, and that is far more time consuming and expensive.
Load More Replies...When your day job is road work but you can't control the artist inside you
They clearly did a road repair here. Easier just to repaint it than to sort all the puzzle pieces.
Seeing the sidewalk, I'm guessing they thought it was time to repaint also.
Load More Replies...The Facebook group, ‘Les Perles du Bâtiment,’ has quite a sizeable following on the social media platform. Nearly 247.6k internet users are members of this online community.
At its core, the group has a very clear focus: to share the “best of the worst” in building construction. And it’s all done for fun! Members are encouraged to enjoy themselves and to post construction fail photos for the sake of entertainment.
How long do you think it will take for before someone s**ts in the urinal?
Somebody sent the wrong part, they installed it anyway.

There's a difference between not aesthetically pleasing, non-functional, and dangerous.
Ah Eastern Block construction at it's finest. Those stairs are precast modules, moved in by crane, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume someone in charge took the decision not to cast new ones for this project specifically in order to cut corners and appear better to the party leadership so the designer had to do with ones already "on stock" and they ended up with this monstrosity. After all, it's just workers' apartments, who cares about those guys under our glorious communist system, amirite?
Expanding upon it--without that crazy dip the top ends up at the wrong point. Major planning error on somebody's part.
Load More Replies...No joke, I sometimes dream if staircases that go like this. Immensely frustrating because I never seem to get anywhere and waking up is hard.
I stayed in a huge hotel In London that was exactly like this. Then walk down more stairs to get to the bed. The place was a maze
That's to make sure you're so exhausted you'll sleep even if the mattress is lumpy or there's loud music etc, so you won't complain.
Load More Replies...It was either this or someone has to make a 6 foot jump into their apartment.
The group’s two administrators point out that the community should strive to create “a welcoming environment” and stress the fact that this is “everyone’s responsibility.”
Members should treat each other with the respect that they deserve. It’s important to remember that when opinions diverge. “It’s okay to have constructive debates, but it’s essential to be friendly,” the admins remind the group.
For those days when you want to curl up in a ball and cry silently in the shower.
Actually a good use of space. Probably a dog washing pad or a place to rinse things. Come on fellow Pandas... Look outside the box !!
Probably a choice by Asians rather than a 'fail''. We (USA) think standing up for a shower. The Philippines has both. Some western style showers but more traditionally it was squat on the floor and pour water over yourself. It is common for PI bathrooms to have a tile floor / drain in floor similar to some Japanese bathrooms. I have bathed that way in PI. Or think of how Japanese would squat on stools and bathe before entering the common hot tub / hot spring. (which I have also done when staying at a hotel in Japan)
At least it'll be super easy to reach over to receive a borrowed cup of sugar, or smack someone in the back of the head for practising the trombone at 4:30am
That looks like exterior walkway to apartment doors. On the right you can see the balconies have large sliding glass doors but the doors down the center are normal. It's still kinda creepy that it's so dark - maybe it helps keep rain from hitting you as you walk to your apartment.
That! Long story short: it's from Germany and i read about it in a local newspaper.
Load More Replies...It's when you show contempt for a ladder because it's not your real ladder but a stepladder
At this point, it's cheaper to replace the step ladder than it would be to re-do the pipes
That's definitely a disgruntled plumber - if you don't move the ladder I'll make you regret it
There are three main areas where things can go disastrously wrong when building a new property or renovating an older project. Ideally, you want to see a balance between the architect or designer’s vision, the needs and demands of the client, as well as the skills and performance of the contractors you employ to bring the entire idea to life.
But let’s be real—it’s a miracle if everyone’s on the same page throughout the entire project. It requires fantastic communication, great leadership, and quick thinking when things (inevitably) go wrong.
Done lots of gig work.... Gaff tape is the cats a**e
Load More Replies...Sure, but someone thought the foam sealant was going to somehow help. I imagine that whole house is gonna fall down soon.
Load More Replies...Was the spray foam supposed to stop leaks, or was it expected to hold the wall together?
Me, too. And the light switch was outside the door.
Load More Replies...I've seen a bathroom like this in a hotel. There is a toilet paper dispenser next to the toilet as well.
Yeah. This roll is meant to be used like Kleenex.
Load More Replies...Those things are made en mass by machines. How the hell did this happen? XD
Why would the one coil be so far out of place? I think this is damage.
Load More Replies...One thing that can derail the entire building project is an overly-ambitious or temperamental designer. Aside from technical skills and a wonderfully active imagination, architects and designers also have to have managerial skills. And that means being good leaders: supporting contracts, communicating clearly and often, dealing with conflicts in a calm and professional manner. Things can go disastrously wrong if those skills are lacking.
There are two fundamental rules to any construction. 1- Every problem can be fixed with a duct tape 2- If a problem cannot be fixed with a duct tape, you're not using enough duct tape. XD
This seems only mildly confusing until you see the dude up on the roof.
Wouldn't it have been better to just shoot that guy who was pushing the wall away with his foot?
You can even see the line in the dirt where the stairs were Supposed to go.
I'm thinking the same... There's NO way someone can mess this up so bad when it's so obvious.. at least I really hope not.....
Load More Replies...They said by the door. I think 6 feet away is by the door enough
"I gotta say, the water in this town is a little...tingly...wouldn't you say?"
So designers who are unable to clearly express themselves to their contractors can indirectly cause mistakes as certain aspects of the project get misinterpreted. Meanwhile, overly-arrogant architects can focus too much on their artistic vision, entirely at the expense of functionality and practicality. Some builders might not be able to turn those imaginative ideas into reality due to a lack of skills or materials. While the people who end up living in the house or apartment may be confused by the designer’s artistic direction and a user-unfriendly interior.
Yes, but would you really want to maneuver that ladder while holding things that you might want to bring back and forth between the two balconies? I'd take a pass on that.
Load More Replies...The trip hazard is bad enough, but the waterfall into the house every time it rains would be ridiculous.
Load More Replies...I had the same problem after putting a carpet on a floor that previously had no carpet. Only found out I can’t get out of the room when everything was done and cleaned up. I did consider cutting off the carpet in frustration, but then took the door down and had a carpenter shave half an inch off.
Secondly, the clients themselves can end up harming the overall result. Something that many of you Pandas will probably agree with is just how distracting and annoying people who constantly change their opinions can be. Flip-floppers won’t win you any friends, no matter the industry, especially not construction and design.
Between underfloor heating and radiators - best of both worlds! You can keep your feet warm and warm your underwear up at the same time.
What's weird is the rail part of this is an easy fix by cutting off one segment of the metal support and about 8 inches of the railing. Makes me wonder if the upstairs is closed off / no more.
By the look of it the wall is new. So they're refurbishing, or splitting the building in two or something. If there isn't another stairwell, then I reckon you're right.
Load More Replies...Hopefully it doesn't lead to a living space.. imagine trying to move furniture over this! 😱
No fail here, if anything there is some decent recycling being used here
So if you have a client who keeps changing their thoughts on what tiles should be used in the bathroom, how many lights they want in the living room, and what colors the walls should be, it’s a nightmare waiting to happen. This sort of flip-flopping is going to slow the entire building or renovation process down considerably, as the designer and contractors have to redo some parts. Meanwhile, the builders themselves are bound to get frustrated and demotivated. After all, why bother working hard and quickly if you might have to redo everything again and again (and again!)?
"Don't sopt me noooow, I'm having such a good time, i'm having a baaall, don't sopt me nooow..."
i think they took that TOO seriously
Load More Replies...I've been house hunting recently, and the number of houses that have the tv fitted into the wall is ridiculous. All I think of when I see it is the cost when it needs replace. You would have to redo an entire wall. What are people thinking?
I've seen it--but from the days before flat panels. And it wasn't sealed in place, just in an opening of the right size. Removing it would not be that big a deal.
Load More Replies...You know what? I think I found the perfect place for a large piece of furniture
I sometimes look at property online just for amusement and no matter how good the rest of the property looks, if I see pipes like this it puts me right off the property.
Oh my this reminds me of a flat my husband and I had a look at. It had radiators in the middle of the room! WTF?
Last but certainly not least, the contractors, the boots on the ground, lie at the core of what will either become a testament to design greatness… or will end up being poked fun at on ‘Les Perles du Bâtiment.’
As we’ve covered before on Bored Panda, there’s a wide range of reasons why contractors might make unaesthetic mistakes or incredibly bizarre decisions. Some builders might run out of the materials they need and may not find the right alternatives. So instead, they have to settle for some cheaper substitutes. Others might realize that what’s demanded from them won’t be practical, so they opt for functionality over beauty.
Wrong, the next time, he won't have a face anymore.
Load More Replies...Yip, that should save your face from the inferno that will happen to your visage soon.
Judging by the equal spacing of the bolts, I'm guessing it was a prefabricated cement base with the bolts already installed. The just got the wrong sized pole for it.
Contractor hired the one person with really bad aim to bolt something down. Bet the one bolt that’s actually done correctly was the one the boss did to show the idiot what to do.
However, it doesn’t mean that all mistakes are innocent. Contractors are as varied as any other group of experts. Inevitably, you’ll run into some who don’t care about being professional: they want to get paid the greatest amount of money for the least amount of work. So they’ll be slow and sloppy because they simply don’t care about design or the client. Others might intentionally choose to cut costs and go for cheap materials and shoddy work. Something that is likely to haunt the people living on the property for years to come.
I tried to look at it more and like it... But my brain denies it. Maybe because the sink is smooth but the cut it is jagged/unfinished (sleepy.. Getting hard to words.. )

This looks like someone with a serious problem. He's got blood on his hands and definitely appears distressed. Definitely doesn't fit into this post at all.
Is that blood on his hands?! I don’t think this should be here. Not knowing the backstory, this looks like a person that we should be concerned about, not a construction fail we should be laughing about.
You wouldn't have to worry about that, the tp is way too far away to reach it.

"this statue represents how modern technology has improved our lives...it's also secretly a way for people to get more exercise in the new advantaged world"
You see children, many years ago, people used to stand on an escalator. This is all that survived from those ancient times.
I had to burst out laughing, because I just installed a fan in my bathroom yesterday off the lighting circuit (I also added an extra low intensity night light, so you don't burn your retinas when going to the bathroom at night) and I took the time to tin the tips of the stranded flexible wire to fit into the lever connectors, made sure that the wire itself is looped so you can't just yank it out by pulling on it, properly seal the exits from the electrical box to prevent condensation at a later date, etc... And this m**o just used a zip tie and called it a day. Brilliant!

the tiles could be rotated with the combination of SHIFT + , or . (not sure if I remember correctly) and thus create a pattern.
Load More Replies...It's not a fail. It's a basement toilet retrofit where a drain pipe isn't available below the toilet location. Ugly implementation, but technically reasonable.
They needed space under the toilet for piping/plumbing, if you have no space to put it in the walls or floor it's still got to go somewhere
Yes, it's either this or a very expensive specialized toilet...

Load More Replies...This is a very common practice, and in any case has nothing to do with construction fails since the A/C compressor is obviously a retrofit.
Is it weird that I find this sorta cute? Almost like a human version of cats & dogs losing their toys under furniture.
So many tools left behind at my house over the years. I tell them but they never come get them.
It's OK, if the railing breaks he can just grab hold of the light
Load More Replies...Well said, while an exciting feature, maintenance is a bi+ch! Really no safe way to get around this unless, the architect gave a damn!
Load More Replies...When people post stuff like this, especially with the caption Why Men Die Young, I had a friend who was widowed when her husband put the ladder in the bucket of the tractor, didn't chock the wheels, and fell, hitting his head. He passed several days later. He was only painting the second story of the building, so not even up so high! Make better choices!
It doesn't take far with a head injury. In high school, a girl was sitting on the trunk of a car on a dirt parking lot when the driver started moving, fell off, hit her head, started seizing and died before an ambulance could even get there. So she fell from chest height, basically
Load More Replies...Seen worse. At least this guy had enough brain to use two points to attach the ladder.
On the flip side, he had enough brain to use 2 attach points, but still thought a stair railing was enough as an attachment point...

Assuming 40 gallon water heater that is about 110 pounds for the water heater and 333.6 pounds of water plus misc hardware = approx 450 pounds being held up by that 2x6. If it falls during your bath it will likely end you or cripple you. I get trying to make things work with limited space but I hope that support bracket is a lot stronger than it looks. The likely fail point would be the ends where it is toed into the wall.
Let's put something with water and electricity right above the tub. What could go wrong?
so imagine you are taking a nice bath when you hit your head and the world goes dark... all because of dis.
Sir, would you please have to talk about our lord and savior Issac Newton?
He's presumably just removing bricks from the top of a reinforced concrete lintel. This is not a problem.
Yeah, that lintel seems pretty stable - no worries...
Load More Replies...The translation is "At this point it is better to repaint the whole road"
I *think* what might have happened was that they were stacking the paint buckets on top of one another... in at least two piles? And then one pile toppled over, knocking into the second pile, and thus creating a further mess.
À ce niveau la, il vaut encore mieux repeindre la route en entier = At this level, it is even better to repaint the entire road
Let's just screw this heavy exhaust fan into the drywall... what could possibly go wrong? I had a friend ask me to put up a curtain rod over her sliding glass doors by simply screwing small screws into the drywall. I refused, because I knew it wouldn't work. She got somebody else to do it. It fell out a couple weeks later...
When I was newly married, our first apartment had a cooker hood that only stayed up with duct tape. If you didn't use the stove too much, because heat would make the hood fall down. The janitor promised every single week that he was on his way. One day, when I was at work, the hood fell down and made a mess for my wife. She had enough at that point, so she ripped the thing loose and marched to the office where the owner worked (it was in the same building, so it was a short walk), marched in to his office and threw down the hood on his desk. 10 minutes later 2 janitors showed up and fixed the thing. It can be worth to mention that the owner was a childhood friend of my farhe in law. My wife had known him all her life.
Reminds me of the person that came to my workplace to install a TV monitor to the ceiling. Attached the cradle and TV, then walked away, job done. Next morning the whole lot came crashing down (fortunately missing a co-worker). It had been screwed into the false ceiling and not the concrete. We had been too busy doing what we were paid to do and hadn’t realised the mistake. It was rectified shortly after that with dyna bolts into the concrete.
I feel more like this thing collapsed under the additional weight.
Imagine when the repairman comes and step on it... Disaster!

I think that is just a locked car park. I’m guessing that once it’s paid for, the pole can be unlocked and removed.
The legend on the road says it's a space you need to pay for, so maybe, although it looks like the same pole as the others further up the road, so maybe not.
Load More Replies...If you look ahead you will see that the mystery pole is not indicating a parking space....
That would be cool if this was a monthly or whatever rentable spot and the person got a remote to unlock it when they parked their car.
Looking at the replies i see this is not an original thought lol

That looks like a mostly underground room ( basement ) that's clay wall outside the window
And the windows appear to open inwards. And there is a stool under the vanity. Are these measures for a quick exit in case of flooding, or something?
I wouldn't mind the fact that this is now a squat toilet so much if the stall wall actually made it to the floor! Seriously - by the time you squat, your undercarriage is totally on display.
look, Iranian toilets are like this, but the walls & door hit the floor.

we had a leak on our outside spigot and called a company on the weekend and a guy came out and did this. We said this is wrong and he insisted it was fine. Sent a pic to his boss monday morning and he was so embarrassed. He came out himself and fixed it.

It's an improvised hot water heater. The electric kettle has a thermostat, it keeps the water in the pipe warm. Would only be good for a short burst of hot water though.

I believe it's blocking that square switch.... If not than I have no idea!
Load More Replies...It might be temporary. The plastering hasn’t been finished on the wall.
That's what happens when you don't buy enough of the black grout.
It’s not. The original roof has diagonal or scale style tiling.

Anyone brave enough to climb a ladder that is just resting inside a gutter has rocks in their head
Seems like they do this a lot. They’ve made an effort on that hole.
Florescent bulbs sticking out the back? What could possibly go wrong? I assume the bulbs are longer than the van/lorry.
But, is that really necessary to make hole on the van like that?
Load More Replies...Capped off water outlets and incomplete tiling. What’s the problem here?
Took me a while to see the issue here... the window has a roller shutter with a metal outside box for the "shutter roll". When you have issues with the shutter you can just remove the box to access the shutter... unless it's been incorporated into the wall. Then, no. (Looks like they added insulation and just covered the box)
When her husband comes home early you can sneak out the basement window.
Looks good. Is it because the floor/rest of the building is a mess?
Are we sure this picture is right side up as opposed to the tub?
Picture is sideways. But is that carpet underlay on the side? Meaning a carpeted bathroom?
this thread should've been called "even potatoes aren't usually this stupid"
Many of these need to be explained, but many others just showed what you do when you have to make do with what you got!
Yes, some european countries have extremely strict building codes and inspections. But Europe also has a lot of old buildings and the building codes from the middle ages often don't quite match up with the newer ones, so improvising often is the way to go
