“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the most incorrect sayings of all time. Idiotic opinions, fallacies, and outright untruths are all, unfortunately, broadcasted over the internet for everyone to see, meaning that all of us have to see, hear, and read the very worst words and ideas humans can put together.

The “Facepalm” internet group gathers all those moments when people really did or said something so unbelievable that it caused a visceral reaction to all onlookers. And through the magic of the internet, it can reach you too. So be sure to upvote your “favorites” and comment your thoughts below.

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Aether-0917 Report

The oldest use of the word “facepalm” (but not the actual, physical action) dates back to the early days of the internet. In 1996, where the first netizens mentioned it in a variety of posts about everyday life. This points to the fact that this phrase was in the popular lexicon earlier, as the posters do not clarify what the word means and use it nonchalantly.

However, the actual post, of holding one’s face in your palm, is relatively old, and found in statues and sculptures going back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Normally, it was associated with more serious loss, like Henri Vidal’s Caïn, depicting the biblical figure mourning the death of his own brother, who he killed.

Australia still has guns. But not automatics or semi-automatics. Pistols are rare but not banned. And no carrying guns in public. Even carrying toy guns in public is frowned upon.

Semi- automatics are still available in Australia.... Primary Producers ( farmers ) have a license class allowing them to own and use semi automatic guns ... shotguns ... high and low power rifles. Pistols are heavily restricted and take a lot of police checks and club membership to obtain a license to own one.

I do so love it that some Amerians feel sorry for those of us who "don't have the right to own guns", (even though we do.) We feel sorry for those 48,000+ Americans who learn the consequence of the right to bear arms each year.

So, this year my girls' school had their first drill for an active shooter. I don't think there are adequate words to describe that these drills are not just for the school, but for the entire community. It involved officers and first responder people from 3 cities, blocking off roads, changing traffic flow for others, having all residences and businesses go into lockdown. I just pray my girls never have to do the real thing because itl it IS scary (myself having experienced a bomb going off at my high school the last day of freshman year).

I genuinely feel for you. On another post, I asked why it seems virtually all Americans have a therapist. The more comments I read, the more I understand why. I can't imagine what it's like for your daughter to deal with that, or you wondering if she'll be harmed in place which should be one of the safest places she could be.

It’s very unfortunate that active shooter is becoming commonplace at all outdoor celebrations in the US. You can no longer go to 4th of July celebrations, concerts, even shopping now without risk of becoming a target for some emotionally unstable idiot with a legally purchased firearm.

1996, and one lunatic kills 35 people, wounds 23. The government of the day said 'this is bull****, we're doing something about it'. And the vast majority of Australians said 'yeah, it IS bull****, let's get it done'. And it was. Just about the only good thing that particular govt did, but at least they did that.

Only a tiny minority of Aussies were 'forced' to give up their guns. Just like with gun laws in the UK post Dunblane, they were introduced at the demand of the public. It wasn't the government imposing them on the populace. If they'd have refused to do anything they'd have been kicked out of office at the next election.

I (European) really do admire how the historic background of both North America and Australia/New-Zealand is roughly the same (some Europeans conquering a remote area, fighting against the pissed off local inhabitans and wildlife), but at a certain point people in OZ/NZ decided that carrying weapons are seldom a necessity in daily life, when in the USA the majority feels worthless and frightened without them.

I wish I could vote this more than once. America, and Americans in general (but definitely not all of them) need to understand that their time as the country the whole world wants to be, the country the whole world wants to visit and be country the whole world wants to emulate is long, long gone. You literally kill children in school EVERY WEEK of the school year, but instead of DOING SOMETHING, you allow your leaders and politicians (they are NOT the same thing) to do nothing but “offer thoughts and prayers”. What a ridiculous, no, not ridiculous, offensive is the word, what an offensive insult toward the children you swore to protect, to love and to serve. And then next week, it happens again. And on the days you aren’t slaughtering your children in schools, your mismanagement of your mentally ill and unbalanced allows THEM to walk into public places like shopping malls, cinemas, nightclubs or just the street corner and THEY shoot dead more people. We do NOT want to be you.

laramilvain avatar

Then you send in your police. And they shoot dead the people they think did it. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn’t. As long as someone dies. That’s not justice. That legalised vigilantism. You call the police for HELP. And they shoot you dead, because you thought you were safe because YOU called for help, you were confused when the police screamed at YOU “hands up, lie down on your face, don’t move”. So when you didn’t comply INSTANTLY, they shot YOU, too. But it’s OK, they also called an ambulance. We hope you can afford it, or at least the house they called it to is yours, so you can sell it to pay the medical bills you’ll accumulate getting fixed for the bullet wounds caused by the police you called for help. Oh, not your house? That’s OK. You can sue the police, or the city, or the ambulance, or the hospital - or as your lawyer hopes, ALL of them. So you spend a year in hospital and ten years in court. No, America. We do NOT want to be you. We don’t even want to visit any more.

I could never imagine being a parent, waiting on your child to return home from school, waiting, thinking they're late. You turn on the TV and you see the news. Your heart just shatters. This should not be a scenario in a first world country that calls itself "land of the free". Those children were not free to live their lives and explore their futures, because you had to have your "freedoms" to own a gun. I think the freedom of children is far more important.

It's only been since around 2018 that they have significantly increased. But that's the point. It's not that you can make access to guns impossible, it's just that you can make the barriers to entry so high that Kyle Rittenhouse can't get his c**t hands on one.

I wish I knew why these are sadly necessary these days, but I don't think it's weapons. When I went through school (HS graduating 2002, University 2005) nobody had ever heard about such a thing, and there were plenty of firearms around. And we've all heard about ~80's and earlier it was very common for kids in high school to keep their hunting rifles in their vehicles parked at school in rural areas. I know this won't be popular here, so don't nuke me for wondering what has changed.

I know that this will probably be downvoted a bunch, but most of the time a gun ban is not helpful. Most criminals do not obtain guns legally so taking away one of the best self defense weapons from citizens isn’t really a good idea. And all the accidental deaths from children shooting themselves are all due to idiots who don’t keep their guns in a safe place. Banning guns is not a good idea, and we can look at Venezuela as an example.

Jesus Christ, how many times? The point isn't that gun bans stop ALL criminals from obtaining guns - organised crime will always get their hands on guns. The point is basic economics: restrict supply while demand remains constant and the price goes through the roof. Gun bans drive the barriers to entry up so high that the average junkie can't get hold of a gun, and it's the average junkie who's likely to break into your house, not the f*****g Godfather. And if guns were "the best self-defence weapon", then you wouldn't have five hundred people dying by accident every year from them.

Due to the internet and the general ubiquity of this emotion, the facepalm remains popular, to such a degree that there is even a facepalm emoji (Unicode U+1F926) and a vast library of stock images depicting this action. While commonly reaction images of humans facepalming were used, one can now even find animals doing the gesture, most likely by accident, but it’s always fun to imagine a cat actually facepalming.

For those that see something not worth a full facepalm, as it is a bit dramatic at times, you can use the good old disappointed head shake, that one’s grandparents will tactically deploy when they see anything that confuses them. Over text, one can quickly and easily communicate their disappointment with the good old acronym smh (shaking my head) which is actually older than good old facepalm.

The reality is that there have always been people who might cause us to facepalm. Bad decisions and horrible opinions are deeply human and probably existed before language. So it’s overall a net positive that we have methods to immediately “get it out of our system” when someone does something so deeply idiotic that it makes us feel bad by proxy. As long as we don’t facepalm too hard.

Similarly, while the internet allows us to see more facepalm-inducing moments, on the flip side, it lets us publicly shame people with ideas this bad and it communicates to others who might have similar ideas that in reality, they are wrong and should keep it to themselves.
